man y'all already know what time it is it's time to get fried Southern Fried right here Southern Fried sports with JD and a guest we will see [Music] hey it is the southern fry gentlemen that is me JD JD Wyatt coming to you live from Simpsonville South Carolina um I have a very special guest that I am going to bring to you guys this evening we have tons of NFL college football NASCAR Braves all kinds of things to talk about but you know what I'm sick of talking about the x's and the O's it's time to dive into some deep storylines more of why things were the way they were and why they look the way they did we will talk about it all I welcome all comments I appreciate any of my fans being here we will will get to your comments as the show goes along but y'all as of right now I have a very special guest whom is waiting to come on the show very good friend of mine back in college man another one of those ones I hate to age myself but back from many many years ago we won't put a number on it but I have right now joining me the former broadcaster of Presbyterian College athletics for six plus years on ESPN plus a Fox Sports Spartanburg South Carolina contributor up until a few months ago and currently the Dorman High School athletics broadcaster every game that you hear on the radio of Dorman Cavaliers football baseball basketball I'm sure you've heard of this man here his name is Alex Smith and I wanted to make note 6'4 245 lbs and runs a 4440 ladies and gentlemen may I present to you Mr Alex Smith thanks JD man so glad to be doing this I I appreciate the kind words hey absolutely well um you know I just call it like I see it bro I call it like I see it you are an upstanding gentleman and that was actually going to we'll get into this first so I went to school to be a teacher um you actually informed me that you know you're not doing much radio work anymore you are in a different career now and I applaud you for what you were doing you are a special educations teacher for Gable's middle school man give me tell me about that passion tell me what led you there and you know just give me a little bit of what your willing as a as that teacher well you know it obviously there's all the the emotional stuff that comes with being the teacher and being around the young kids for me uh you know that's what I went to school for many moons ago as you were just saying uh and you know sometimes life goes full circle an opportunity presents itself uh an opportunity for me to still be able to call some games and be around Sports and do the things that I love to do uh but also you know be able to make a difference with the kids each and every day and then it actually opens up more time for me to spend uh with my son hold up uh in a little bit uh but uh you know schedule-wise uh everything just kind of came full circle the opportunity presented itself uh and being a part of District 6 in the athletic program uh it just felt like the right spot for me and and honestly we're about a month in and and I I love it every day is is you know it's a blessing and it's just one of those things that uh you feel good at the end of the day I don't know uh not to say that you don't when you talk sports but you you know it's one of those jobs uh you kind of really do feel like you're making a difference and I'm I'm happy with my decisions man absolutely well I accidentally removed you from the stage there for a minute without golly I made a mistake my bad Alex was giving us great life advice there and JD made a bloopity bloop um but no we I've got I've got a couple of listeners um cocky Tex and jru he actually just started being a nurse and man he said it's some of the most great because he's in he didn't do it until he was like 40 again we're not gonna put an age on it right right he did it in his later years and um he's like man with my parents and everything man it's just a really gratifying thing to do and you said hey I'm I'm a guy dad and that's why kind of where my name came from Southern Fred gentleman I am here I have two little boys myself four and three you best bet your bam dollar they are going to be upstanding gentlemen they are going to know how to treat people with respect and honor their elders and just be good people you know it's all about parenting and everything else so man that can lead me into so many things about sports from this weekend man we could dive into the Tyreek Hill thing we could dive into all kind of stuff here we'll dive into Dorman High School football though to start how was it calling the game down there in Greenwood tell me some tell me about some dudes on the Dorman High School team man who should be good getting looked at here yeah uh you know Dorman bounce back from a big loss the week before played one of the best teams in the state of Georgia you just kind of put that out of your mind uh they went down to Greenwood and played a much better football game uh the defensive line was unbelievable throughout the night uh the linebackers Drew Derby Kent Tavon Anderson were excellent Dorman's defense really controlled the entire football game uh they've got some youth in the secondary but their front seven uh is really fast and really talented and it's going to keep them in a lot of football games games uh a lot of Youth on the offense sophomore starting quarterback right now a sophomore starting running back right now uh so the offense is still kind of finding their footing but the defense uh has been so Elite it's going to keep them in some ball games they've got a byee this Friday uh and then they go on the road to Riverside to open up region play in the new bigger regions uh so that's a game I think a lot of people you know you don't put numbers on high school football but they would feel dormund would probably be favored in that game uh and to move to to three three and one uh before you know you've got a really good Boiling Springs team down the line with their quarterback Lincoln husky spart andberg High School is has got athletes all over the field um what I expect to be a shrine bowler and Justin rice is a wide receiver uh Gaffney is loaded as always so that region is so tough uh for Dorman to get some confidence and get some of these wins early in the year I think is big for these younger players that are getting their first taste of varsity football right absolutely um yeah I talked to Cole Bryson I don't know if you've heard of his work here in the upstate he does a great job covering love me some cole Bryson yeah love Cole hey he was actually my very first guest on the show Believe It or Not yeah absolutely yeah me and Cole fan Upstate that as a matter of fact like I said that's where I got my taste into all this is the fan Upstate and I feel like there needs to be a bigger Spotlight on South Carolina High School football here in the upstate I mean I feel like a lot of these guys are under recruited they're underappreciated and then I mean when you think about teams like Clinton uh we've got a walk- on at Clemson and my cousin played offensive and defensive line down there for Clemson we've got people at Anderson University Coastal Carolina Cincinnati and I just feel like these would be absolute dudes to fill in rosters like Clemson and South Carolina so let's talk a little Clon and South Carolina from this weekend Alex we'll lead right into it okay a good good weekend for both fans I gotta say absolutely now do you will you claim a fandom here on Southern Fred Sports I am always have been a Gamecock fan uh my father went to South Carolina you know Garnet in Black just runs in my blood um so what hey what about the tenacity and just the perseverance of Gamecock fans man hey we've been through 0 and 11s no national championships man Hey listen it doesn't get any more gritty than being a South Carolina fan so here we'll lead off with that one how did you feel about the performance against Kentucky and do you feel an inconsistent letdown coming this week against LSU at home interesting which I'll I'll tack on to what you said yeah being a Gamecock fan you know you you it builds character you know it makes you a better person in the long run having to watch them week in and week out and and that's funny because so many Gamecock fans will tell you when you see them perform like that in a big game on the road there's going to be a let down historically you know you beat Alabama number one team in the country then you lose to Kentucky and that's Carina has always seem to do is follow up their biggest wins not just with a loss but almost always with a just terrible performance so South Carolina needs to find a way to be more consistent you know Shane Beamer they're a young team I think they're they're going to be much better uh at least offensively uh than they have been in the first two games with all the youth and the in experience for them as well uh I think they're going to grow on offense but uh that play should be absolutely rocking uh Williams Bryce Stadium game day is in town the fans need to be loud uh and I think this is a a game where South Carolina needs to get off to a good start if things start slow for the Gamecock and you did yourself a hole the fans everything the energy in the building is going to drop to the here we go same old Gamecocks if you jump out to a 10 nothing lead on LSU with how they've struggled this year uh I think then maybe you don't know what you don't know with the young players and they think this is how it's supposed to be that we're supposed to win all these games where you and I at R age know that no son you're in a game [ __ ] Jersey you're supposed to let every down eventually right well see and I I I think that I'm a I'm very misunderstood I think from that regard Alex because a lot of people might call me a Debbie Downer or a pessimist and I've just learned so back you know 2007 to 2012 or 2013 and 14 even counting wins up and down the schedule was a whole lot different you know what I mean like it was just like win Kentucky win vanderville win Tennessee was the toss up Florida was a tossup but I mean we could almost guarantee beating Kentucky and Vanderbilt every year and then Vanderbilt yeah they're still on that side of the ball hopefully good gracious after after them beating Virginia Tech um but yeah back to the Gamecocks and everything man yeah it's just like they've always Happ to have that one inconsistent game we've seen it on the baseball side of it and hopefully with this National Spotlight man I'm tell that defense though that's the one thing that I think we can ride it all right if that defense plays like they just played on the road Lenor sers and them they can do 250 yards all they want to as long as they that that's a great Point Dylan Stewart has been unbelievable uh Canard and I mean they've all gotten SEC Defensive Player of the week we've had SEC Defensive Player of the week two weeks in a row out the gate yeah K five sacks in both games five sacks in the Kentucky game on only 22 drop backs Kentucky abandoned the pass game what was in the second quarter they ran they ran the ball on 19 out of 20 plays only threw it one time after South Carolina was getting so much pressure on them until the end of the game when they had to throw it if you can rush the passer you can win in the SEC and and you have to be able to rush the passer to win in the SEC and they can do that this year and that's you're right that's something you haven't felt since the Melvin Ingram and the Clowny days that that your defensive line is going to keep you in every game they're just that deep and that talented this year and and and you're right you can have your struggles on offense you can make mistakes you you can put up 250 yards you can win you can win games with 14 or 17 points this year I think with this defense you don't want to do that uh but it is at least feasible so they're going to keep them in every game uh and I think Gamecock fans should be happy to think hey you might not get blown out this year you know you you might you might stick around with the big boys and nobody's going to drum you 42 to7 which you know you're normally good for one or two of those years a game cut fan right absolutely well I mean even I going into the year I said I'm predicting 4 and eight it depends on what those losses look like if we are competitive and executing plays and keeping it close I'm 100% good with that I would prefer the continuity you know people were talking about whether or not to fire Beamer after a 4 and8 season or whatever I'm dude if it's 4 and8 and we're looking like we're looking that I'm good now it can't look like ODU the first week and so Alex let me move ahead a little bit here we talked about the Gamecocks let's talk about Clemson conspiracy theories have it that dbos Sweeney finally gave the car keys over to Garrett Riley and I'm I gotta be honest it looked like a completely different offense I don't think George is that good first of all because Clemson didn't scheme nearly that well against Georgia they did against App State I don't app state is a good team I don't care what anyone says I don't care what their 124th defenses I swear on all that is Holy davo Sween he said here Garrett call this game run your offense what do you think that's well that's what everyone's been asking for that that was the reason you brought Garrett Riley in was to overhaul the offense that had not been working the Clemson Way uh for a few years and they had not been a great offensive team Trevor Lawrence covered up a lot of warts on those Clemson teams his last couple of Seasons they were not executing offensively like they should have been the play calling was not creative at all and you're right that's that's the best I've seen Clemson look in a long time offensively you're the scheme was there and it it felt like they were calling plays where our guys are better than your guys we we're going to call plays where we're going to put you in a one-on-one and our guy's going to win and they went out and did that this safe play calling uh has not been working and you're right it felt like they just they took the training wheels off and and went all in if you will and and really just you know let Garrett Riley let him just do his thing and just you know hey I'm drawing plays in the dirt because this guy can't be covered they can't cover this our ex receiver or our y receiver and just let him get creative with that they're going to be more talented than almost every team left on their schedule their schedule is not all that difficult it never is they played Georgia you know Georgia one of the five best teams in the country I'll say that comfortably you know when I look at the Georgia Bulldogs Clemson not one of the five best teams in the country uh and I don't think they will get there this year uh but they 10 11 wins a playoff birth most certainly still on the line for the Clemson Tigers oh absolutely um k for of K for ratings I had him on my show um they actually Clemson had dropped a little bit in the ratings now they are back up top if you don't follow at K Ford ratings or if you've never checked it out I had a very good show with him he projected the game Cox at a 10% chance to start four and0 this year and now after after this Kentucky win yeah I mean that now it's possible he's got some yeah that Kentucky game was maker break absolutely I called that from the be I was like Kentucky week two because technically that's our fifth win all right you know what I mean yes yeah yeah and that's the game and that's so funny you talked about going up and down the schedule for Gamecock fans a lot of Gamecock fans like you looked at the schedule preseason all right that's four or five wins you beat Old Dominion you're like okay we're still four or five wins now all a sudden you beat Kentucky you're like okay seven or eight wins maybe now now a couple of those games are a little more of a tossup you feel like uh if that team can play like that on the road in the SEC right well yeah even Beamer said all a lot of narratives after this week one at home weren't you know they weren't in real life and then even with dbo he said the same thing man Clemson they came out and performed Kate kumnick best ever statistical Day from a qbr rating in Clemson history 99.6 so we've talked High School football we have talked Clemson and Gamecocks let me get you out of here Alex I know you got to go in just a moment I hear him screaming almost bad time yeah I get you but hey I've already I gotta go put mine in the bath after this NFL I'll I'll you can take it where you want to take it um what did you what were your expect expectations or do you want to talk about Tom Brady or do you want to talk talk about Tyreek Hill you take it away oh uh I I just want to talk about my favorite expectations anything like that about the NFL uh a couple of takeaways for everything uh that jumped out to me was how poorly the quarterbacks performed in week one you think you have all that time you know your opponent obviously they're not putting everything on film in the preseason but in 30 30 teams have played leading into Monday night through a total of 33 touchdowns 30 teams threw 33 touchdowns Baker Mayfield threw four of those uh so I think I was a little bit surprised that the defense has played so well in week one now obviously um if you're Carolina Panthers fan just I don't know man find another team for a year or two until they get another owner uh but overall the NFL I was surprised how well the defensive plays and then now turning my attention to Aaron Rodgers starting uh trying to finish his first football game in over 600 days and he's going against a really good 49ers team uh I think Aaron Rogers uh will have a great season I don't know if he'll have a great game to open the season but for me my eyes are on the Jets they're one of those teams that that is such a big unknown coming into this year I'm curious to see how how that looks on Monday night absolutely hey well Alex let me get you out of here on a few compliments my man all right so my man Rowdy rooster he actually is a very big contributor to my show he actually was part of the reason why it's name Southern Fried Sports so we've got Southern Fried Chicken that's my Gamecock segment we've also got what's the most difficult thing you've heard all day I have my expert segment that I do where it's the smartest people on X or Twitter or whatever you want to call it but yeah my man Rowdy rooster he wanted to say much ECT Alex I have a son who is in special educations I ever told me that before not in a long time anyway I don't think think and then um let's see here Rowdy rooster one more Oklahoma is very beatable yeah I'll yeah I'll talk about that I LSU became winnable the minute we won Kentucky on the road LSU back at home the week after I got a feeling Beamer ain't gonna let them boys get their head too big yeah but I mean it it is our M Mo though yeah well luckily South Carolina did not crack the top 25 and they crack the top 25 it always seems they get to 23 and then right back out bang bang bang bang chicken G hey and that's one thing I say a lot also Alex is a bang bang I got a few little sayings here on the show man but yeah man hey I'm so excited I'm so happy to talk to you again bro we hadn't talked in a long time I'm so glad I I really I calling was just different and here is my Logic on that Jamie and um I'm gonna take a little break right after that be quick 20 seconds or so but yeah Jamie I mean you just expect me to believe that Clemson conceded the game against Georgia I mean we heard dabos say that the scoreboard doesn't matter before the game started but why not play the disrespect card if that's the case why not say none of these people expect you to win this game let's go prove them wrong and here is the scheme in order for us to do that to me it felt like Clemson played timid and Afraid which is fine just tell me that though or just tell me that Garrett Riley finally got this is my comparison all right this is my comparison all right let me let me settle this one more time I'm gonna take a quick break and we're going to go back through and hit a few of my notes that I didn't get when I was on with Alex by the way shout out Alex great stuff here's what I think I think that dbos Sweeney was trying to treat Garrett like one of his players and he's trying to limit if you will his nil possibilities or preventing him from getting too big of a head or doing the right thing and keeping him from getting a speeding ticket like Kirby Smart I feel like Davos Sweeny had these handcuffs on Garrett Riley and he's like well here you can take the car out for the night but you can only take the minivan or you can only take the little pinto bean the little Ford Focus hatchback or you can only take this or you can only take that and then all of a sudden I think dbo took those handcuffs off and he was like all right I think I've learned my lesson now everybody's chastising me all over National media saying I don't know how to coach why don't I just let my players or my coaches coach excuse me why don't I just let my coaches coach duh isn't that what you hired Garrett Riley to do in the first place the Gamecocks wanted him because he ran a dynamic offense and guess what that was the other night against AB State a dynamic offense so I think that Dabo fin took his thumb off a little bit I think dbo kind of you know he clicked the dog leash he let the dog get out a little bit further on the leash and Garrett Riley was 100% in control of that offense that game and I think that's where you could see the difference I have said it since last year that Garrett Riley should make Clemson a dynamic offense I I don't want to be wrong I can admit when I'm wrong I'm good with that I got Jamie my man in again Clemson lost a starting linebacker for the year ish that does suck I tell you what else sucks being a Panthers fan McLoud which means the truth FR for Samy Brown will play in a big roll now can't wait to see him if the hype is yeah I did hear the hype about Brown um hey Jamie I don't know if you know or not but I have an episode just a couple back with Susan Lloyd who takes photos of Clemson football whether it be their nil deals or on the field if you miss that chat I highly encourage you going back and watching it y'all I'm GNA hit a 30 second break I'm going to catch up on my notes I think I'm going to finish up with some Panthers and some n and then it'll be Cowboys quarterback outperform you at commentating all right Tony Romo immediately stepped into the booth and was going to tell you exactly what happened all right do y'all remember that the moment Tony Romo stepped in the booth it was like he was a better commentator than a quarterback in the first place so Tom Brady man hey you pretty all right you pretty you did a pretty good job I'm gonna need you to step up a little bit yep hey I've seen that all day Trey all day Greg Olsen and J uh Romo over Tom Brady all day long sorry I'm words are hard y'all getting a little excited I got a comment thank you Trey for being here thank you Jamie thank you Rowdy rooster yeah oh I missed one of Rowdy Ro comments yeah we can do more golf talk hey absolutely we can absolutely as a matter of fact I'm gonna be going to play golf soon I think old Jamie maybe I can get old Alex maybe we get us all we'll go play golf together maybe how about the unfortunate Tyreek Hill situation and I only call it unfortunate because what happened all right what happened Tyreek Hill said he was respectful didn't use any curse words and then now reports coming out that he was uncooperative we all know the smack that we've heard Tyreek Hill talk about beating people in races and this that and the third so I I don't know that I can believe a word he said says honestly and if he were truly remorseful about anything that happened during that traffic stop I can't imagine he would go make fun of it when he celebrated his touchdown pass by putting his hands behind his back that not only did he have to go through but one of his teammates Kus Campbell had to go through through and so to make fun of that situation is insensitive the NFL should find him I would would you am I wrong now if he's innocent didn't do anything wrong b means he's all good but I find it very hard to believe that Mr M the Tyreek Hill himself wasn't being cooperative as we see the report so I want to see the camera footage I want to know what happened and so yeah Panthers hey I know what happened there can somebody place the New Orleans Saints under arrest for murdering the Panthers please Jesus Christ I thought the Panthers had a chance and I like to think I know Ball but wow interception on the first play by Bryce Young no dice Panthers man I'm telling you what we might be in line for the number one pick again so my advice to you Panthers fans do not sit too close to Dave teer site please because you might get a drink thrown on you if you do sit close to a suite my advice would be carry an umbrella that's solid advice carry an umbrella when it rains don't pet strange dogs don't eat yellow snow those are also solid pieces of advice and then listen y'all hey it's about time to rock and roll out of here Jamie my man chiming in again speaking of my cousin on Clipson some on Saturday night when they were showing on the sideline him and his brother are Big Boys Hey that is a fact Payton Big Boy Cal playing offensive lineman shout out Cal he was actually MVP in MVP MVP last week for the Clinton Red Devils big win Clinton Red Devils against Newberry I would love to cover more high school football y'all y'all send me scores send me players I'll cover them we'll talk about them I absolutely love shining that light on fantastic young gentlemen and then we've got Trey who would I draft if the Panthers got number one nobody nobody nobody nobody um depending on who and what Bryce young looks like going throughout the rest of this year so if we are going to lose a lot of these games I think we need to figure out if Bryce is the dude and so if it comes down to the end of the season and we prove that Bryce is capable no you know what no no no I'm wrong I'm wrong I'm wrong I'm wrong no I'm wrong just forget it just forget it get the number one pick scrap the Bryce project tell Dave terer to get the heck out of the way and let football people make football decisions but I mean a after one game I don't know any faith I have in Canales and Morgan and them getting on the same page we are just so far behind right now uh my number one thing though would be would be to give Bryce one more year and draft as many pieces around him as possible next year so I would probably trade out of one and I would just rack up as many as I could and then I would look to get a number one in 2026 I think I think that's what I do I don't know um I'm not sold on Quinn I'm not sold on Beck I'm not sold on shadur there's nobody in the college ranks that I'm really salivating over if we did get that number one pick again and so I think it would just be a great opportunity though to mess things up really starting to think the B's height is a detriment to him he looked like he was running for his life when he didn't have to um I agree I agree I think it's just like bronnie James they said he was 6'4 and he's barely pushing 6' one Bryce young I think is short than me not like my guest Alex maybe I doubt it maybe ruers possibly the Big 10 will be very interesting to watch shout out to Eric o'briant I almost forgot your question but I didn't and like I said y'all be kind and I will
