Rebecca chapay a Ugandan marathon runner who competed in the Paris Olympics just last month has tragically passed away after being horrifically burned by her boyfriend the Uganda Athletics Federation confirmed on X formerly Twitter this Thursday we are heartbroken to announce the passing of our athlete Rebecca chapay who tragically became a victim of domestic violence the Federation shared we strongly condemn such acts and demand Justice May her soul rest in peace chapay 33 who resided in Kenya had been in critical condition after suffering Burns to 75% of her body following an attack on Sunday at her home in transen Zoya County her death was also confirmed by the Kenyan Olympic team on X the athlete who had just finished 44th in the women's marathon at the Olympics was brutally attacked by her boyfriend Dixon IND dma after a dispute over land transen Zoya County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole kosum explained cled that indama had stormed her home with a Jerry can of gasoline dousing her in petrol before setting her on fire a medical official at Moy teaching and referral Hospital told CNN affiliate Citizen TV outside the hospital her heartbroken mother Agnes described her as a good child who didn't deserve such a fate uganda's minister of State for sports Peter agang expressed his grief on X calling Chap's death tragic and confirmed that Kenyan authorities are investigating the circumstances of her death a more detailed report and program will be provided in due course he said Kenya's Sports Minister Kip chuma Moman shared a statement reflecting on the gravity of the loss saying that chp's death was not only a devastating loss for Uganda and the Athletics Community but for the entire region sadly chapay is the third Elite female athlete to be killed in Kenya in just 3 years in 2021 Kenyan Olympic runner Agnes trop only 25 was found murdered in her home with stab wounds to her neck her husband Ibrahim rotic was charged with her murder then just months later 28-year-old Kenyan athlete dearis Mutua was found strangled with a pillow placed over her face shortly after placing third in a half marathon in Angola moman's somber reflection on chap de Gay's passing highlighted a growing crisis stating this tragedy is a grim reminder that we must do more more to fight gender-based violence especially in the Sporting Community where its shadow has grown alarmingly in recent years
