perhaps a little bit later on but alongside Tyler Watts I'm Chris Stewart so glad to have you with us of course Damen Square will be joining us from the sideline our broadcast host is Roger Hoover a great crew that we're fortunate to have assembled and others that we'll be telling you about as we go on as well but Tyler watt's always something special about opening day whether you're playing Little League baseball whether you're playing Major League Baseball whether you're playing the NFL or if it's your opening day in college football we're getting started it actually starts counting and yeah there are some interested eyes on what Bama football is going to look like in 2024 yeah we talk about this every single year with the fact that the rosters are always different Personnel groupings what's left what's coming in what did we get from the high school ranks and now throw on top of all that new coaching staff and just new era football I know you said that over and over and over again but the fans remain constant here and they're showing up in droves they're showing up in droves and then they had to Scamper a little bit we had some thunder and lightning in the extended area but we did have some heavy rain for a while which really messed up what the pregame plans were for us as a broadcast crew we had hoped to be in Champions Lane but unfortunately the weather keeping uh are sending us inside and things slopp be outside for a while but looks like we're in good shape right now the typical this time of year Thunders showers that can roll through thankfully not a lot of Thunder there was some rain still seems to be cooled off considerably not quite as humid as we might normally have after a shower passing through well I think about what these guys have been practicing when now go into the morning practices on the on the field around 9:30 or so going all the way until 12 they've been in the element so they're more accustomed to it than the rest of us they can put up with this heat and humidity that over the last couple of weeks has not really been prevalent here in the state of Alabama but is definitely coming back tonight we are pleased to welcome in once more to our broadcast group but the first time we actually hear him from the sidelines himself Damen Square I got to imagine there's some juices flowing in you right now brother getting ready for this one as uh you're back in a familiar spot down on the field oh yeah man it's it's it's tough to be over here not as a player I'm already ready to sack TJ Finley right right now man we look if you can go go find Jeff Allen uh get your taped up need no tape man you don't need any tape well but we got to get you Jersey go in there and let uh let Jeff get you equipped as well cuz we're not going to ask you to play more than one one play per series but we may get you for that that's all I got hey let me ask you this though from an adrenaline standpoint as a player is it really tough to be careful not to uh not to make sure you're gassed by the time you get kick off no doubt about it I mean you just got to you know be even and levelhead I feel adrenaline right now man it's hard for me to be down here my heart rate is raising up they got this good music going I'm looking at the highlight video of the past Bama Legends man but you also got to remember you got a full game to play you got to play One play at a time but it is very difficult to keep the heart rate low in pregame especially for the first one all right we'll be hearing from uh Damien throughout the broadcast look forward to visiting with him as he joins our crew as our Cooks best control sideline reporter this year Tyler whs Let's Get The Scouting Report from you tell us what you're looking for in this one between the tide and the hill Toppers of Western Kentucky well I mean I think honestly this is a good matchup for this Alabama defensive unit uh Western Kentucky loves to throw the ball around you kind of talked with some of their guys of who are the go-to receivers for these Hill Toppers and the answer is well they all are they love to spread it out TJ Finley is not going to be particularly targeting one person so that's really going to put a tough job at at hand here for this Alabama defense of making sure the communication is proper that they're not allowing receivers to go wide open because given time TJ Finley will have the ability to find them and by the way the last time TJ Finley played the University of Alabama he was pretty effective and almost pulled off an upset down on the planes yeah we almost but he almost still lost or did still lose and that's really all that matters but he's looking for Redemption obviously and his start versus at LSU against Alabama didn't play particularly well when he was a freshman then transfers to Auburn gets the opportunity as you mentioned in the IR ball did everything he possibly could there during regulation to win that game holding on to a 10- nothing lead before if you'll remember the Alabama offense finally woke up with about 5 minutes or 6 minutes to go in the fourth quarter and was able to win that game in overtime so TJ Finley has a lot of ability 67 240 lbs big body strong arm if he's given time and not forced to move around in the pocket he can be effective as a quarterback all right the Alabama away from kickoff between the Crimson Tide and the hill Toppers of Western Kentucky the season opener for 2024 and the start of the kin debor era as head coach of the Alabama Crimson tie Tyler we've had a chance to be around coach just a little bit and understanding that change is inevitable it's always going to happen at some point or another thankfully Nick Sabin able to walk away on his own terms and it the hike back in the college football playoff semifinals a minute and a half from being away or play playing in the championship game and ironically it would have been against the man who follows him now as head coach of the Crimson Tide in coach to Bor course coming from University of Washington your thoughts on what Alabama has and what Alabama will see with this man as head coach well I think OB obviously the product of what he has done throughout his career kind of speaks volumes the fact that he played in a national championship game just a year ago up at at the University of Washington this guy has won wherever he has been and that's kind of what you're looking for is someone who is able to replicate success at multiple programs building improving every single time at a higher level and now he comes to Alabama as you mentioned with all the success that coach Sav has had over the 17year period that he stayed here in Tuscaloosa I think that we do have a good one someone who can take us into the next age of college football as the game continues to evolve a younger guy lots of energy new ideas ways and approaches of doing things but continues to win regardless of where he has been all right tile let's take a look at the starting lineups for this one presented by Trans America Trans America helping tide fans create Financial Freedom so they can live their best life we'll spend a little more time and in fact and our starters will go exclusively with Alabama's starters uh because there are some new faces not as many as you may think with a coaching change in this day and age Tyler but still some different faces in would begin on defense where we'll see either LT Overton or more than likely jaryan leam as the starter at that Bandit position yeah Jia may be one of the better pass rushers on this Alabama front he played a little bit last year but has really stepped into that starting role here early on this this fall at nose tackle Tim Keenan thei expected to get the start with Damon Payne there as well big off defensive lineman and I think this could be a strength of this defensive unit is the guys that are able ble to rotate in they have six or seven bodies they feel comfortable with coming in but it all starts with Tim Keenan as well as Tim Smith a senior who has played a lot and has a ton of upside ability yeah defensive tackle next to the nose Tim Smith or Jim Otis listed likely to see some of James Smith also the wolf they're going to call it tell us more about what that position really is quandarius Robinson keano Co excuse me cot or Quay rousa expected to get the start at what they're calling the wolf it's a speed guy who can come in on on down distances that that dictate it you bring a little bit more speed someone who can go into coverage but more than anything else just pin the years back and get to the quarterback in addition to the new terminology with the wolf we also have new terminology with the Stinger deont Lawson Jeremiah Alexander or Justin okaron quo but with Deontay likely to get the start that's an appropriate name too for a middle linebacker is the stinger you're wanting to lower your head in there stop the run between the tackles these these linebackers are going to be tasked with Walling off any vertical threat in the middle of the field they have to be able to keep those guys from getting to the middle until safey can pick him up at the Mike linebacker Jihad Campbell expect you to get the start with Justin Jefferson backing him up and we saw Jihad really do an outstanding job especially later in the season he's great in pass coverage he's put on a little bit of weight he's becoming more of a thumper inside The Tackle Box at one corner it'll be zaven brown with DeShawn Jones or Xavier miny behind him yeah and I'm I think a lot of people are interested to see exactly how these Corners are going to stack up new faces there in the second obviously Deon Jackson coming over for USC a lot of ability there they really rely on him and his expertise and just his experience that he has had he could be a key guy in this secondary you'll have Devonte Smith or red Morgan at what they're calling the Husky King Mack also expect to get some snaps there tell us about that spot yeah Devon Smith is an outstanding guy I think he's really B bought his time he now has an opportunity to play he's a vocal leader on this defensive side they're asked to do a lot into coverage but they got to be willing to come up and run support if needed similar to the corner but a little bit different look for there yeah a little bit more of a safety or hybrid of what we would call a lot kind of what Malachi Moore used to play He Is the strong safety or listed that way now with Cameron Howard behind him and he's the key in this entire secondary he he's a guy that knows the defenses he's very vocal making sure that everyone is on the same page he needs to have an outstanding season this is a new position for him but one that could Elevate his ability to play at the next level if he succeeds Keon Sav will be at free safety Bray Hub listed behind him and Keon Sav obviously coming in from Michigan tons of ability does a really nice job of reading the quarterback's eyes has a chance to make a lot of plays there from that safety position so there's the projected starters and backups there at defense on offense some familiar names even though they changed addresses briefly but Kaden Proctor at left tackle expected to get the nod there with Tyler Booker also on the left side with him a veteran as well really strong good talented group there on the left side that's a solid side and if it's third and short or second and short that's the direction that I'm running those are movers they're on the left side of the line scrimmage Kaden Proctor lost a little bit of weight a little quicker a foot more confident in his ability and what's expected of him and I look for a big year out of the left side of that offensive line Parker brailsford will be the starter at Center 62 290 he is a third-year sophomore from Mesa Arizona was wearing purple and gold for Washington last year for Coach kayin dor a bit undersized as we said for what we're accustomed to seeing but man a lot of people around that Alabama staff both holdovers from before as well as newcomers go don't be fooled this guy may not be the biggest but he's as tough and as talented as you'll find at the position and it going and watching him in practice he's as consistent of an offensive lineman as you're going to see anywhere he's quick with his feet he does a great job of hand placement and making sure he's in the right position and even down the Red Zone they'll use their Center Parker bford to pull around and and gain that extra Man On The Edge on the right side Jaden Roberts getting the start at Right Guard the third year or fourth year Junior actually out of Houston Texas and he'll be at guard and to his right either wiin for be the tuscalo native or Elijah pritchet another veteran uh fourth year or third year excuse me sophomore out of Columbus Georgia and the B the battle at right tackle continues and will throughout the course of this game both FR forby and priter both have an opportunity to come in and see what they can do so there you have the offensive lineman add in couple of tight ends as well we're going to see these four probably a good bit because kayin deore likes to use the tight end in his offense both as blockers and receivers CJ de three Danny Lewis at what they'll call the Y slot but the uh the h for the tight ends Robbie OTS and Josh quas and all four of these guys have had really good fall camps they've been very instrumental in the passing game they've they've improved on their route running of creating space catching the ball and being able to advance it big bodies who in that 12 and 13 personnel which this this offense is going to want to utilize as much as possible they create a lot of problems for defensive units no surprise Jaylen milro the starter for the Crimson Tide went from starter to backup to starter to almost getting to New York for the Heisman celebration or uh ceremony I should say and a guy who just got better and better and in the off season seems to have taken another step forward as well yeah the light really went on versus Old Miss last year was he took a shot threw a touchdown pass and from that moment on he was the leader of this football team and really came into his own his passing is continuing to prove and obviously his legs will just absolutely terrorize defensive coordinators he can throw it but he's got a couple of good uh running back options veterans and jam Miller and Justice Haynes behind it two big backs that are very physical between the tackles but not talked about enough is their ability to come out of the back field in the pass route and be able to advance the ball that way a lot of mismatches that they're going to get versus linebackers and safeties and they can utilize their speed and strength to be able to break big plays there's a ton of depth and we're going to see it as we go through these first several weeks at the wide withle wide receiver slot we're going to go ahead and mention the six that are on the depth chart don't be surprised if there are more names mentioned as we go along Jeremy Bernard Emanuel Henderson Jr Kendrick law the super freshman and Ryan Williams also Kobe Prince a veteran and another youngster that's very talented in Cole Adams lots of guys that have are very quick with their feet very explosive as well and they're looking to create as much space as they possibly can and each of them obviously with the with the schemes that are coming into place can be kind of targeted at various places it's it's not like the old days where you have one guy that you're throwing to 80% of the time they feel confident in all of these receivers will rker is gone he had an nil deal with I I believe Social Security at the end of his career uh AARP somebody like that but he has moved on he's now in all seres doing tremendous things in the NFL with Minnesota but Graham Nicholson who was indeed the L Rosa Award winner last year now wearing the Alabama uniform and he's got Conor talty a good one behind him as well yeah both those guys I think that these coaching this this coaching staff feels very comfortable putting in there but Graham Nicholson obviously the transfer in from miomi Ohio uh outstanding kicker very accurate and I think if he's probably good 99% of the time from about 40 to 45 yards in maybe the most undervalued guy uh over the last couple of years is back again thankfully James burnup punter but also the holder on U placements as well and nean hibbit is also back and now a scholarship player as the Long Snapper was given one uh after being a walk- on for the majority of his career now great to see that Dennis homman grandson is a uh scholarship player for the Crimson Tide he's been an important part of what they've done in special teams you know that's often the position that's overlooked more than anything else with the ability to get the ball where it needs to be for these kickers cuz timing is everything in special teams it is indeed and timing pretty important in broadcasting as well hopefully we got a lot of those things taken care of with our pregame coverage so excited to be able to talk to you about what's taking place for Alabama football as we run through those starters receivers reading the quarterback size he knows when the ball is being delivered in the right position and then breaking on the ball quickly needed one more block down the sideline come on guys Daven what' you see buddy um I saw multiple guys having eyes on the ball like I said whenever you play in zone defense you know it's it gives the illusion that certain things are open um three had his eyes on the ball TJ threw it he picked it off I was hoping he took it to the house but maybe next time he got it to the yard anyway not all the way to the house but bambas inside the 25 and operating first and 10 from there milro with a running back back to his left looks like Haynes that's who will hand it off to justce lowers his head fights forward and will pick up about a yard or two on the play second and long up coming Jalil Rivera Harvey making the stop for Wester Kentucky we saw Haynes lose his helmet there and the tide will bring Jam Miller in to replace him Kendrick law will come wide left joining the freshman out of Sahand Alabama Ryan Williams two wide outs right as well for the tide empty set now as stepping up and sliding down wisely is milro after a gain of about three and 1 half four yards middle linebacker I believe Chandler Matthews was there to make the hit pressure came completely free off of the right side of the line of scrimmage as Western K Kentucky brought more than we could block play was intended to get out quickly but milro saw the edge pressure coming out was able to step up and pick up at least positive yards third down and six Crimson Tide need to get just inside the 16 in order to keep this drive going they're 0 for one on third Downs thus far Miller to the left of milro gets the snap looking pressure coming from the edge steps up now he will look fire catch is made inside the 10 inside the five into the end zone Kendrick law touchdown Alabama 21 yards as Alabama gets a first down and more the ti scoring for the second Drive in a row 501 to play in this first quarter and the tie leads it now 13 to nothing with the extra point pending man initially there was nowhere to go with the football good Z coverage by Western Kentucky and as jayen milrose stepping up to advance the football he sees a Defender coming up to take him away he's keeping his eyes down field finds Kendrick claw one of the quickest guys on this Alabama roster Nicholson a score of 21 and nothing still have not seen a sustained drive a lot of big plays short field situations that Alabama fortunately has capitalized on but not a sustained Drive Justice Haynes in the the edge fighting forward pushed out of bounds and well beyond the boundary and some barking going from one of the Hill Toppers and he don't want any part of that I guarantee you DeMarco Williams acting tough the Old Mist transfer hit him late out of bounds no whistle for that as they just carried the plate a little bit further and again that was somewhat Innocent but the The Barking that came afterwards you're down 21 to nothing not really sure what he was gloating about right there third down and a couple up coming for Alabama hannes in the back field to the right of milro who looks to the sideline for the signal three wide outs to the right side of the formation snaps his hands or claps him and whistles and a timeout may have been called by Alabama start time out it is a timeout I think kayin wanted to make sure that Alabama had everything lined up right yeah on Third and three play clock is getting awfully close to zero as well not wan to lose this opportunity to continue this drive big difference third and three and third and eight in terms of what you want to try and do and look they're still talking about trying to win the football game but in his mind he's probably thinking I want to see how we react in this situation and that's another key example we talk about the little things and doing everything properly as clock awareness understand where the play clock is jayen milro you practice it you practice it but still game time situation sometimes you got to knock the dust off a little bit of that awareness timeout has concluded Bama comes back out to the field penalty should not have mattered at all if we were able to wrap up in the open field and drop him for a loss well I'll give Malachi Mo a pass he's the one that got pushed in the back and he would have tonight man these guys are playing real dominant they are indeed and we're also seeing a new quarterback in the game first snaps of 2024 for Ty Simpson the 62 25lb third-year sophomore from Martin Tennessee he gets the snap he rolls right he looks downfield he fires and the catch is made at the 35 yd line in beyond for Alabama the catch from Kobe fenis the CER native making his first grab of the night and that's a great throw on the first fire of the game from TY Simpson it was I love how they roll him out give him a clean picture to look at Kobe prin sits it down in that zone coverage for a nice game handoff goes to the new man of the game for the Crimson Tide and a heck of a backfield when you you got your fourth guy being Daniel Hill who is a very talented option in the running back slot and look you lost some great talent from last year but as you get this young man in there what an effort or what a uh quarter running back room Alabama does indeed have we'll get more of on that in just a moment as second down and nine is upcoming for the Crimson Tide Simpson play action swings it out near side catch made pittis again spins away from one man fights forward picks up the first down to the 20 yd line he will be in that Chick-fil-A Red Zone after a 13 yd throw catch and run but again as we were talking about Daniel Hill being among the options he is just a freshman out go three and out and they get a turnover and then they get another turnover and then the scoring on the offensive side started but very impressed with this defensive unit and how aggressive they were how they appear to all be in the right spots and obviously there's things that we didn't see that they did wrong however it's a good start man A lot of times with a transition was something we haven't seen in a long time same system for so so many years now you're going to see some hiccups some problems some some growing pain so to speak on on both sides of the ball and you really didn't see that tonight a lot of talent out here guys playing hard over overcome the mistakes on both sides and Lord knows there are still plenty but a good overall performance by both sides you know what I liked about the mistakes like you mentioned there were some procedural things some substitution things we saw in the first half we saw six penalties against Alabama in the first half only one in the second half and and that is Improvement especially the the the substitution stuff cuz that's simple communication and pay attention on the sideline knowing when to go in what the situation is what units you're supposed to be on when the Call's made but also sometimes that's coaching as well they might call for a different formation or Personnel grouping when the opposing offense or someone has not well he counted for five touchdowns tonight obviously the two passes to Ron Williams great throws Ry Williams extending one of those plays running in after breaking a tackle but also the one to Kendrick law busted play where he goes to scramble and push the ball down the f run the ball down the field finds Kendrick law in the flat wide open who breaks a couple of tackles in for the first touchdown throw of the night as well so Jaylen milro did a really nice job he had the one sack where he had on the ball too long he was a little flat footed on the on the uh the erant snap not his fault necessarily but could have jumped on the ball as opposed to rolling over it and turning it over as a result of that but played really good football tonight clean mentally where he needed to be making the right decisions that's the kind of growth that you were looking for out of Jaylen how the offense adjust to to not having Kaden Proctor in this game because again that have been the whole plan all fall Camp even into pregame warm-ups and then all of a sudden you have to shift some stuff around right and Elijah prit was was anticipated and expected to be battling for that right tackle position but you'll go back remember last year Elijah had several starts or at least one or two starts at that left tackle position played a lot of reps over there it's a position he's familiar with he was able to come in and played outstanding got a little banged up but was able to hang in there very tough come back in the ball game and finish it up again even though you're just a former quarterback I mean you can talk about so much more than just that position give me your highlights for the defense in this ball game defensively I loved how aggressive we were and it didn't matter who it was that was in the ball game it seemed like early on it was it was Quay Russa who was just really a dominating force and then later on it was ji Campbell we also called Justin Jefferson several times several guys throughout the course of the game xaven Brown early on Xavier meny later on being physical inak all these different guys that were flying around the football it wasn't just one or two players it was different go as they were rotating in all making impact plays so today the Crimson time get this win against Western Kentucky and next up South Florida obviously that was not a fun trip for a lot of reasons last year a boring trip was it it was uh something so we know Alex scash we've seen him before both as an offensive coordinator at Tennessee and now the head coach at South Florida uh what kind of game should we expect coming up next week what does Alabama need to work on look I I think there's plenty Once you turn the film on these coaches will have plenty that they won't reviewing improve on and that's expected I don't look for the game versus South far to be anything like what it was last year I think they caught us in in just a trap position we just come off that loss versus te Texas had kind of lost our identity you could tell we were deflated but defensively we played outstanding last year I'm sure that that will continue and offensively we'll find a way to move the ball so this is a team that has a lot of of of uh upside to it I think they have the talent in place it's just a matter of jailing together they need the Reps they need the work just
