I I don't want to be called african-amer I'm an americanamerican my people have died and done everything for this country in this episode Smokey Robinson made a really important point that I want to highlight before playing the full clip for you this is just my personal opinion I'm not saying it's a universal truth but it's something I feel strongly about I don't agree with the term African-American being used to describe all black people in America to me that label should be for someone who has migrated from Africa to the US establish their life here and become part of American society but for someone born in America whose ancestors have been here for generations and contributed so much to building the nation I believe it's inappropriate to call them African-American why include Africa and their identity we all know our heritage but at the end of the day we're simply Americans there's no term like European ameran or Asian-American that's used so broadly so why is it different for black Americans in my opinion it's unnecessary to label every black person in America as African-American most of us are just Americans and that doesn't take away from our Roots we know the history and where we come from but if we're defining people by ancestry then we might as well do it for everyone you have said that you resent the idea of being called an africanamerican that you are a black American yes explain I think that when they call black people who were born and raised for Generations in this country if you accept the handle of African-American that says that you don't accept being an American am you don't accept being born in Chicago or New York or Detroit or wherever you were born for Generations your family has been here you know built this country too sweat and tears and all that you know fought in every war okay so this is my country here so I I don't want to be called african-amer I'm an americanamerican my people have died and done everything for this country
