he's been with this coaching staff longer than T than Josh Hy's been with Tennessee he was at UCF with these guys and then he came over here he's the third string quarterback the last two years see The Limited action in his career can update that number now to 11 completions after that nyd catch there is a player down on the field for Chattanooga and he's on the he's near the Tennessee bench I [Music] believe it almost seems like Aston Moore should have like a a slash offensive analyst guy that's knows this offense inside and out not sure what they were working on over there on the sideline carry of the day and his best one for 13 yards really was kind of had to pick his way through the interior portion of that offensive line more slings it near the sideline and it's a good ball to squirrel white number 99 in squirrel's career offensive coordinator Joey hallsley he made it a point to tell us look Jon Moore knows this offense but he can quote Drive the football downfield he can make the throws it's evidenced by that last throw now to the end zone out of the end zone Brazzle tried to drag a foot That official was right there to witness it though let's see it again he's trying to slow down you can tell he knows ah yeah right foot clearly out of bounds good job by the back judge all over it just one step that ball hung up just a hair too [Music] long 4 62 over 200b bounds usually you see a ton of of just inside Zone everybody kind of stepping with the same foot there's not a lot of time to get assignments down they pull an offensive lineman on more than half of their their ability to communicate up front so quickly that just adds another element to this offense makes it very difficult to defend Seldon won't get much it'll be third down another nice play by rutage you know they were saying we we had to be cognizant of how physical we were with these guys so you have to wonder what kind of impact that's made on some of these openers how physical they've been in gym it's rough intense they said he was was just giving it as good as he could was getting it and he just got it there four guys sacking him like a little bit of miscommunication out there on the 700 yards of offense felt like what probably should have happened I think everybody wanted to see what niiko IAM malava looked like in his first opener as the guy what' you see from you know what it was it was the same thing we saw Thursday with Missouri same thing we saw with EUR Alma moer last night with Oklahoma a fast start from the offense virtually perfect going up and down the field the first seven possessions you get six touchdowns one field goal and then Josh Hyo got frustrated with the last two possessions of this the first half and it kind of carried over but as far as Nico's day it was exactly what we wanted to see 79% of his passes were complete 313 yards didn't throw the interception maybe most importantly that you want to avoid I thought at least for from what we saw from him at the Helm of the offense it was a success and how about some of the weapons Dante thoron Jr coming of agees seem to speak a guy that we talk about a lot he's got all the intangibles GU fast he can take the top off goes for three for a 105 today which is big for him and the Run game we talk a lot about about uh Tennessee's Run game Dylan Samson kind of filled that role he go for 124 The Rush game as a total goes for 300 yards and so I think you're right this is what you want to see from this offense this is more like the Tennessee offense that we saw a couple years ago seven or so explosive plays downfield and so the vertical passing game was at will which is what you should expect I think in an opening game like this to your point they were averaging at one point in time in the first half I think 11.3 yards per play so the explosiveness that we saw a couple years ago when henen hooker was at the helm is kind of what we saw today all right how about a take on Nico from Nico who is standing by in Knoxville with a list of line ni you set a School record today the only quarterback in Tennessee History to throw for as many yards as you did today in a half of football how did you feel like you settled in when did you feel like you settled into this game at the first drive we settled in pretty well um once we got on a Tempo I thought we started rolling and uh yeah it felt good after that first drive for we were talking about what it might feel like for you to run through the te for the first time as the starter take me through what it felt like for you felt great man it was it was good seeing all our fans again um you know first home opener and uh yeah man it felt good to go out there and compete with my teammates you went to work with Dante early walk me through how you were able to build such great chemistry right off the bat in this one it just starts with our preparation um you know practice we were getting a lot of those same looks and uh when we got out here and game we was just having fun so I think it all clicked from practice carrying that over to the game dam was in the end zone a whole lot what does he bring to you from the Run game what do you hope to get from him for the rest of the year brings a lot man brings you know that that big playability any play he can he can break loose and you know go get us in the end zone so I talk enough about what he did he was creative he was improvising he made a lot of plays on his own that I don't think were actually designed plays he gets out on the edge he flips the ball he throws passes and so he he was the xfactor to me today that Virginia Tech just had no answer for and then Vanderbilt's defense was able to shut down uh pretty formidable running quarterback uh in drone that Virginia Tech has just an allaround team effort and then to have the fortitude I think to play into into overtime you know a lot of times people don't don't understand how tough it is to get into the overtime situation but they lasted and then they came out with the you know you know it stood out to me we were arguing about whether or not they should kick the field goal or go for two at the end I like the decision only because it showed confidence in your defense you're just giving up a long touchdown to give the lead up they go ahead and decide to to to kick and trust their defense they get as a quarterback you know any ball towards the front of the end zone you want to throw low make your receivers go down anything middle and back you got to throw it high too many guys that can drop into the studio here D during Watson lightning in the area there in Columbia South Carolina we will keep you company for a bit 107 Gamecocks here two other teams in the SEC are playing right now Texas no problem with Colorado state Florida big problem right now at home with Miami but in the early going here South Carolina we just saw sers take down his own ball carrier trying to get up in front of him and lead a block but 10- s game could be worse after the big mistake you know what the got the big interception the end before the big interception Nick Harbor coming back across the field to make the tackle there after the fumble was recovered easily could have been a touchdown reminds us of a play that our boy Benjamin Watson made back in the NFL little longer you had to run but that's a big time play by Nick Harbor to force the offense on the field and ultimately get the interception yeah how about the defense the defense keeps him in the game I mean old old dein has a chance to kind of Take the Lead there defense gets an interception game started off with an interception by this defense and so again while this Lenor C's passing attack is starting to get off the ground we just talked about the negative3 passing yards that's not where you want to be as a quarterback right now but never see that we were looking like really one for five for three Nega but the rushing you know rocket Sanders getting back this offensive line you know last year this offensive line really really struggled so part of what I wanted to see today was whether they going to be able to protect him and allow him to get the ball downfield and open up some holes in the running game 84 yards they've allowed to this particular point just three yards on the ground on 10 carries for Old Dominion I'm trying to see how many three sacks too for South Carolina in just over a quarter of play yeah well again again it's a defense one thing you got to know about South Carolina they're going to play good special teams they're going to play good defense and a lot of times it's the defense that keeps the games close I mean that's what this is about especially in the game that's now going to be muddy the weather's coming in it's going to be a grind but this defense has been playing well getting some turnovers you see five tackles for loss there that's all we've heard about during the preseason too and the scrimmage is it's largely been dominated by the defense and so it was excited to see how those guys would play today they do look like they're more aggressive this year they do look like they're playing a little more physical so uh if we can get the offense going could be a nice pairing uh Lenor sers by the way leads the team in rushing 45 yards on 11 carries I think everybody want to see rocket Sanders South Carolina debut eight for 27 uh and but again just the minus three yards pass passing to this particular point for South Carolina whenever this delay ends I'm kind of just trying to grab a glimpse of a radar it looks like it's essentially just a one little spot just west of of Colombia yeah uh that doesn't seem to necessarily you know how it is in the summer though no this is the time this is the time of year stuff pops up and hangs around for a little while yeah this is the time of year all right uh let's show you what else has happened earlier in the day talking Clemson and Georgia you South Carolina fans would no doubt like the way this game turned out for the AR travel Clemson Tigers third quarter no touchdowns on the board for either side yet just six nothing dogs Carson Beck Colby young transfer from Miami with a touchdown 13 nothing great field by Carson Beck knowing that the defender on top of the receiver back shouldering him so he can make a play and a good catch by young little Crossing route here by the Vanderbilt trans for London humpr who turns on the Jets shot crosses are sometimes hard to defend for defenses the wide receiver gets the ball with a lot of running room and speed to burn with running humph you can use an official as a oh Malachi Starks very reminiscent of the interception he had as a freshman in that same building against Oregon who says if you can't catch you play defense right d right I asked him you can catch and you play defense you will make a lot of money and how about if you can stiff arm a dude to the ground and tight Roop the sideline with a cool Mustache Cash stash right no doubt look at that stash bro cash Jones Cash Money 343 what a route 283 in the second half for Georgia absolute domination what happened offensively that got them going in the second half started running the football a lot better you know weren't running the football very well in the first half a lot of the passes were short kind of Dink and dunk passes you saw Mike Bobo call several passes to the perimeter that kind of serve as runs kind of the screen pass types and so in the second quarter second half you start to see Carson Beck go down the field more you start to see more of that deeper play action pass interesting to see how so many different pieces are involved in this offense Nate Frasier the the the rookie the F The Freshman uh running back gets a touchdown you got Kobe young who comes over from Miami he gets a touchdown Lon is not here you got other guys showing up and so sometimes in these first games although you've been with your team for the entire off season you've been with your team for the entire fall Camp you want to see them in game type action and so I think offensively Carson Beck did a great job of number one one taking care of the football not turning it over not doing anything to get the team beat and then when the time came to open it up he did that to Perfection I thought that was purposeful too I thought that Kirby Smart knew exactly who they were and maybe more importantly what the limitations for Clemson was I don't think they thought at all that they'd be able to move the football so very conservative in the first half as you talked about not wanting to give Clemson a short field or any uh pick six or scoop and score and then they became a little bit more aggressive in the second half after that that offense for Clemson was completely neutralized you mentioned it earlier ton of pressure all day long on C Club Nick 39% of his dropbacks he was getting hit and the secondary I thought played in a nice accompaniment with the front knocking down balls in the air and certainly Malachi Stark's interception that pick was incredible yeah they couldn't run the ball two yards a carry that's all Clemson was able to generate on the ground and Club Nick was under pressure Georgia defense looks like the Georgia defense that we've come to know and love for the last four or five years for sure 3 43 all right let's listen in to head coach Kirby Smart after his team starts one and0 I always open with um thanking our fans but I also want to thank um afflac Clemson Dabo um the way they play the way they coach but uh this event's special to me and every chance we get to play in it we want to play in it so Gary stoken and his staff do a tremendous job and so has afflac go ahead okay anding with the Atlanta V Voice coach Mala Stars a few years ago as a freshman in this game he made a big catch I mean interception made another huge interception this game today and then freshman KJ Balden he's a freshman had a pretty good game what do you attest the credit to a guy to starts growth in this game and being able to put freshman in games like this and they have a great performance yeah I think coach Schuman and his defensive staff have done a tremendous job of making our defense uh adjustable um complex without being complex and you can play more players that way so uh you know we we we we we tell freshman all the time we had Malachi playing this game two years ago KJ played the game today Michael played in the game two years ago you know if you're talented freshman and you can learn then you can play and Malachi's growth is a credit to his humbleness or his humility and he is a great kid from a great family and um that's that's what makes Malachi special coach uh T to have that first half looked a lot like that game in Charlotte a few years ago uh just what kind of adjustments or was there anything you saw at halftime or what would you owe that the offense getting a loose in the second half I think that Mike and his staff did a good job at halftime um looking at pictures seeing what was there um capitalizing on some explosive plays um we blocked well on the perimeter and uh that that drive of the second half kind of opened things up I think it loosened them up uh it allowed us to be more explosive and um we Ed some Tempo to help us and uh we think we're a really well-conditioned team and I thought that juice between you know Nate's quickness brought some energy and and Dylan making some plays on the perimeter yeah Michael goes down in the third quarter and looks like Jaylen Walker comes in at outside linebacker he gets back-to-back tackles for loss on one drive next Drive gets back-to-back sacks what sort of allows him to come in and play both inside and outside and make an impact like that like he did today yeah he wasn't really playing for Michael he he was playing outside linebacker before Michael went down that's I mean they both they don't really play the same position there's there's packages there where jayen plays inside there's packages where Jaylen plays outside um we've had to get uncomfortable as coaches to uh use his skill set and I think you know Schuman and the defensive staff have done a great job of um finding ways that he can be successful so Michel and him both are really good football players and they both need to be on the field they don't need to to share time coach I think during the game B tweeted that Malachi's the best DB in the country um do you think you Javon Bullard during the game do you feel that way about Malachi do you think he's the best DB in the I don't know I canot judge I hadn't seen him it's easier for bull to say that because he's seen the things that Malachi's done in practice I do think the the play I saw him make today may be one of the best defensive football plays I've ever seen live in person I've seen a lot of on TV but that one you know he twisted and contorted his body and and and how he could find the ability to go find that ball and get it is um it's pretty special hey Co over here um obviously the first half it was a little bit difficult to get the running game going uh how did Nate Fraser help you guys open up the offense a little bit and get um the offense going well I don't know that Nate opened up that I mean we we we we hit some perimeter runs to start the game you know and you try to mix and mingle and and and uh try to catch people off balance um we thought that we could run it a little better inside than we did they have some uh some big defensive linemen they're big on their edges they're big up the middle they're they're going to give people you know problems defensively I have a lot of respect for them uh I think uh Nate brought a little juice and a little energy there as cash did too and and Branson Branson hasn't played football in a year so uh Branson's going to be fine he's he's he's a really good back and um we're going to continue to get better and uh look forward to using all those guys skill sets we we've got a really good dynamic in that running back room in terms of the players we have Coach uh on that note Nate Frasier had a an excellent debut and um I was just wondering how how would you assess his uh place on the dep depth chart after today we don't we don't we don't do depth charts at running back I mean cash Jones had a great day too and uh I was really proud of all those guys stepping up but there's no depth chart I mean we we we play the guys that have the best week of practice Kirby told you transfer receivers today you know made some big plays me Kobe down around a goal made a great catch in London show how fast he is when he get the ball his hand in space yeah London I thought really stepped up I thought the play of the game was the play he C over the middle um Dylan had gone down with some cramping London had to step up and go play he made a great catch I think it was a third down conversion I'm not sure but once we converted that it kind of was a springboard to being explosive and scoring and I thought that was a clutch catch you know he he London is is a great kid he's very levelheaded nothing really affects him uh it didn't surprise me in the moment that he didn't the moment wasn't too big for him cuz he's played in a lot of of these SEC matchups Kirby you mentioned Michael earlier what was the injury for him and for Warren Bron as well both uh one's a ankle and Warren was more of a a contusion of some kind I'm not sure I don't want to say high ankle but it was above the ankle it was more calf uh in there where he got stepped on he felt like and and Michel's x-rays they looked good but I've seen that before so we we we we got to go check it when we get home and and see coach obviously etn didn't play with was that a suspension and will is it over now will it will it carry into next you know we don't talk about those things chip it's a good try though focused on I'm focused on how our guys played today and that's the focus and energy I'm putting it towards I appreciate your question uh we all know that Carson is calm cool and Collective but we've heard you say that you wanted to show a little bit more passion get his teammates fired up did you see that from him today yeah I thought he got a little passion and energy too there you know we struggled a little bit early and didn't have the third down conversions we know in the first half and I thought he responded well to that uh he came in said down on the iPad and he told me when we came out the second half he said we're going to go to a score coach and sure enough uh we did and um I thought he he really handled that that well and look that's a good defense guys y'all can say what you want that's a that's a really high quality defense hey that kick from pton 55 y uh I mean pretty late in the half there how how big was was that for y'all yeah it was big at the time but it just you know you can't play these games in three three three three you got to score touchdowns and uh that probably was a little out of my comfort zone but it looked to me like he had uh some room to spare on it you know and uh what was it was it 50 what 55 yeah I didn't even realize I knew when we went to kick it it was out of the zone that I really wanted to but I didn't have a lot of options there and uh we were playing field position and I've seen him make them so indoors I think it makes it more significant yeah coach I believe Carson Beck extended some plays with his legs there a couple third down conversions just talk to that growth in the area of his game using his legs yeah tremendous I mean the first conversion was that it it didn't end up in points but what it did flipped the field position it made them play behind the the bad field position most of the game um he has the ability to do that and I tell people all the time they don't know the athlete he is and it's not the speed it's the body control um decision making uh he hurt you when you go out there and match everything and then he takes off on you he's got really good pocket presence and um he he he made some plays with his feet yeah with Warren going out Jordan Hall Xavier McLoud out there not out there what do you see out of Christian Miller and zavier and N stack house today in the middle of your defensive line just tough guys man I I can't say how they played you know I can't like I didn't watch it specifically but to play the plays they play the number of snaps the volume they've taken they have been EXT extremely durable and uh extremely tough Trey's done a great job of bringing the young players along in that room and you know we're getting a uh a blessing in some ways of getting all these young guys ready while we're trying to get healthy and uh that could really pay dividends uh late in the year um if if we get everybody back hi coach um some of the talks surrounding Clemson has been that they have not been utilizing the transfer portal um as much as some other teams have can you talk about how the trans uh transfer portal guys have affected your roster and how they've um affected the way that you guys play this year yeah I that's that's you know that's hard for me to to speak on I'm not Judgment of someone else I guess you're not asking me to judge their program you're saying how the transfer guys have helped our program we're very selective in in in the transfer department you know we take a tight end out of Stanford who's played in a similar offense two tight end sets uh we take a wide out who we play against and and and can run and we need wide outs cuz we lost guys at wide out uh we take Kobe who's a high quality kid I mean we talk to these kids we visit with these kids and you know if I if I I want my team to stay my team I've always said that if you could give me every kid I sign they stay at my program for four years and they can't leave I would take that every day of the week but if we're going to lose kids we've got to replace them with high quality kids that are that are um character kids that are looking to to to have an opportunity to win a championship they want to go somewhere and play because otherwise you don't you can't survive in the SEC without the depth you need so it's a it's it's a it's a forced situation you have to use it so we use it selectively because we actually like signing high school players that can develop and the guys that you see in our program most of the time are that yeah coach I think I saw you guys play seven offensive linemen today Micah and Monroe getting in the mix what what does that say about the depth of your program and what kind of a benefit I guess does that provide to you well we we want to play a lot of lineman all the time I mean Carson works with those guys all the time we we like to play eight and nine I think it's to get through the year you're going to have to do that we're we're thinner than we've ever been you know we've played seven eight guys we've always played three tackles and um we'll continue to do that if they're playing winning football coming out of Hal time um you guys scored on the opening drive Clemson comes back down they're threatening two score your defense holds them to a field goal um what did did you like from that series from your defense and how big was that in the moment uh I thought we responded I'm trying to remember that one I think they got to a short yard situation we were able to stop him knock him back gave him a negative play I thought uh the defense executed well in the red area which is something we work on situationally a lot um coach Schuman called some really good calls and and and and Jaylen and those guys on defense executed them Kirby obviously you guys have new faces every year but I know you guys have some traits characteristics that you like to instill in your team did did you see that when it's 6 nothing and and you guys take control in the second half like that I didn't understand what you asked in terms of some of the you know the resiliency not looking at the scoreboard being able to you know do what you guys practice to do I was proud of way a team play both halves I mean I really was I mean foot I think the narrative is out there you're going to roll the ball out and Georgia's just going to win they're going to win because they have a g and they're just going to roll over these teams and football's not that way that's a really good football team we just played and the the the fact that we played and pushed through that is indicative of the things you're talking about we buil into our program we said we had to out physical them I thought we did we have to out hustle them I think we did we'll watch the tape and you got to out discipline them um and and those are three areas that we thought we had to win to be CLS and and and our guys prove true in that got another question for Coach Martin raise your hand we'll bring a mic around to you Allison coar I know you said postgame that the interception for Malachi reminded you of Champ Bailey just what was it about it that reminded you of that and just Malachi's performance today yeah when chant was a freshman we're in 42 people don't remember he would he would play Middlefield safety and he had range that was unheard of I mean he could go from sideline to sideline and he made some diving plays and uh extended his body and uh and Malachi is very similar to that in terms of his ability to play manto man his ability to play safety he could go out and play Corner if he had to he's just a a tremendous athlete but with all that accolades he's one of the most humble great kids I've ever been around but I saw champ before the game and I told him that that that malach has a lot of his same traits a question in the back Kirby the past couple off seasons there there were some incidents and and from the outside there were questions about the culture of Georgia football on the inside how would you describe the health of the culture of of Georgia football right now awesome I wish you could talk to our players I wish you could live in there and see our guys dayto day and see Thomas settles and Bryant Gant and all the people that that stand up in front of our team and and talk about connection and share their experiences and I mean there's two of them sitting right there you can ask them they'll tell you the the what you know in the inside is a lot more than than what people can paint pictures to be outside and people use it in negative recruiting and they throw it out there and it comes back to bite them too coach right here you guys want 40 consecutive games in a regular season that means you got to be a very focused program what what do you think the secret is for you keeping these players focused no matter you you know players come and go but that focus seems to be pretty consistent I I think it's a a process like we believe in what we do like the the the the leaders on our team that I meet with they believe in it they sell it they push it to the younger players I think somebody said the other day we had 38 or 42 um my my advisor brought to me we had 42 or 38 I can't remember what it was I had to sign something saying they were all eligible and they were all new we had 38 or 42 new people new and when you turn over that much you better have a nucleus around them that can keep them grounded and that's what we've been able to like sustain at Georgia is we're not going to change what we do based on who we play we're going to do what we do we're going to try to out execute you and and and and and just do it the right way and I think a lot of people that's hard to do I think it's hard to do it the hard way all the time because everybody wants to find an easier way and it's just there no easy way to to to to win these games they're all hard coach over here on that um fade route to Kobe young um it looked like Beck and young had been playing together for years so how how did how have they been able to build that connection so quickly yeah it's been tough because Kobe hasn't actually practiced a full practice week he was very selective we had him you know uh where he was not taking a full load of reps they had a really good connection early in Camp and then when his hamstring occurred they lost some of that Rhythm um and I think think you know we we we've got to get uh more out of Colby col's a really good player and and we need him to step up if we're going to go where we need to go I'm sorry if you were asked this already but what can you say just about your freshman and Nate Frasier and the impact that he's had in this game especially you know it's not all the time that a freshman does make an impact like this it's awesome we we we we the players can tell you that I get on him all the time because he's out of control he is just foot fire moving going at the speed of light doesn't know he might run into a brick wall cutting back and uh he cut back a couple times in practice and I told him I said when you get in a real game you cut back like that they're going to light you up you know I might actually said some things I can't say in here uh but he uh he cut back and went all way across the field for about 50 and I told him it okay now he uh he he could do that but he's a great kid he got an opportunity he sees the moment a lot of people blocked in front of him and and like I told you johnon Bowens is a good back he's going to have an opportunity to grow and play so I'm looking forward to that room because I think we got some juice in that room actually they get more experience look guys Nate's a long way from a complete package he wasn't here in the spring so he missed 15 practices of intense work that he's trying to play catchup on got time for one more question yeah jonel I think banged up going to this football game you talk a lot about ma Malachi and you said he's your best corner could be your best corner what did it say could play Corner could play Corner uh what did it mean for you to be able to slide him into the nickel today for you guys yeah that was huge that that was probably the thing I and you bring it up I forgot about that was one of the biggest things that got us in the week when jonell had a pull and it happened on Saturday and we didn't know he didn't go Monday he didn't go Tuesday he walked through Wednesday and we're all messed up because now we're having to not move one person in his spot we having to move Malachi then Dan then KJ and it's like it was really scary CU we we didn't have the volume of reps with that that that makeup so then we tried to go with jakori some but every time jakori was in Mal had to play over here and Dan had to play over here and when Malachi went in Dan jumped over here and KJ went over here it was they did a tremendous job of knowing what to do from three different positions and we really need to get jonell healthy and and I thought jakori stepped up and and took advantage of his opportunity thank you coach I wanted to play that for you a lot of interesting parts of it as we sit through a weather delay with South Carolina in Old Dominion what did you hear from your Elma moders head coach there in that 19 or so minute stretch yeah a few different things I thought that one thing was interesting when he talked about the transfer portal and that's a conversation I think that's come come around a whole lot um over the last several years the fact that Clemson does not going and transfer portal a lot Georgia doesn't really a lot either but you see how that manifests itself in and some of the big plays that were made for Georgia today you look at a guy like humph or you look at a coob young who scored a touchdown and the fact that you know now in this day and age of college football if you're not dipping into the transfer portal at some point to supply your needs then you're going to fall behind you mean Clon well hey a littleit a quick social media search and they're all over dab for right it's all but I think they I think they should be I think they should be because there comes a point in time where you have to realize you know this is how it's being play you don't have to go crazy other Kirby said was I would love if my players came and stayed for four years like if you're a confident coach and you've got a great program and you know that you're able to develop skill you want your players to come in and stay for four years and then go on to the NFL you want to because that gives you the competitive advantage against someone who's able to get somebody from the transfer portal but that was interesting him bringing that up just the fact that you know there there are bits and pieces there are times where you have to go in the portal although ideally I would love to have my guys and develop them in in house know what's interesting Dari is I think you go look at Old Miss This Year everybody thinks is Lane kein being the the the portal King but he got so many of those pieces from last year to come back and then they sprinkled in a few guys Walter Nolan princ Ley Manu melan those guys are supplements compliments to what they already had I think it's a great way to go fill holes but you don't want to have to turn over your entire roster every single year and of all the coaches across the country Kirby Smart's been the best about being able to retain his own Talent now he's started to lose a little bit bar Alexander a couple years ago goes out to Southern Cal you lost uh Jermaine Burton before that but I I think all in all he supplements Jermaine Burton with you know Missouri's best receiver Mississippi State's best receiver no longer part of the team there in ra Rob but Dom love it I mean like he has supplemented you lose one yeah you bring in two what was the greatest thing that we talked about Nick Sabin was he was always ahead of the adjustments right he was always uh willing to to push forward and and advance and embrace things as they were changing now he got to a point where enough was enough with the I he had enough yeah but in terms of just adjustment now Kirby playing that same game staying ahead of the adjustments understanding the changing landscape and embracing it you know as we sit here and we're watching a few South Carolina players I just glance up at the screen kind of trickle out of the locker room here I I suppose that's a good sign um you know the best news about the three of us and CD in particular doing TV right now is that he doesn't have to watch the Florida game so that's good we're keeping your attention you made me rushing on the ground for him but the big question is not only his ability to throw the football but these receivers too Dave like who is going to step up from this receiving court and really be that stand out guy be that Xavier Legette from a year ago and that is a question that is going to be something that we're going to be asking for the majority of the season I think well the last play before the teams went to the respective locker room Juju McDow took a hand off to the right side cut it back to the opposite side of the field looked like he had a touchdown with a bunch of green grass but was you one keep your leverage in this 326 defense you want to keep your leverage and then two make South Carolina and their red shirt freshman quarterback earn it don't give up the explosive plays were fine giving up a couple runs here there which they've done but to look at the scoreboard only 10 points given up seven of those were in a situation where you're back in your own three yard line this defense has done a great job keeping everything in front making them run the football not giving up anything explosive through the air in the pass game Rocket Sanders with the hand off left side trying to get a couple of yards for the first down I think he did get enough brought down by Ricardo Williams that'll move the chains and the clock keeps moving closer than 10 minutes here in the second quarter I think expectations too I mean you look around the country you see all these high-scoring games and touchdowns this is not going to be that offense this year for South Carolina I I I like the identity of just staying committed to the Run game use the rpos use the The Zone reads then hopefully be able to take some shots and some confidence run a little option game and Lenor sers opportunity for some of these young players first year starters South Carolina offense just to take a deep breath and refocus themselves a little bit pitches it out to Joshua Simon the tied end and Colombia and just fell in love with him but wanted to see him play some actual football and was lucky enough to get him to decommit from the C and stay home here in South Carolina and off to the left side not much there Jason Henderson his first tackle tonight Henderson and Lowry combin on that Henderson the young man we talked about for Old Dominion he is chasing down the NCAA record for tackles not only on third down but first and second being disruptive in the back field hand off to Bryce Duke pick up a couple of yards Demetrius Knight Jr the linebacker the six year player out of Locust Grove Georgia who transferred in from Charlotte quick hand off again to Duke and he'll take it out to the 28 maybe 29 yard line that's going to be the big difference today for this this defense this year you know they want to add depth at the front seven the defensive line tackles ends linebackers I feel like they have that ability right now some young guys with a lot of talent are going to get some playing time in this game and going forward but they can be this good this season up front it is going to be as a lot of people are saying one of the better defenses in this SEC third down fourman rush quick throw near side pass caught there by Pat Conroy he'll have the first down over the 35 to the 36 dvo Williams on the stop no relation to the legendary Southern South Carolina writer probably just get this one now to the locker room Denzel Lowry picks up a late first half stop defensively been very impressed with what South Carolina other than the one big play they gave up to Isaiah pagee they have been fantastic especially that front six the pressure has been fantastic five sacks but a lot to be left left in the tank offensively after 30 minutes of football yeah I think minutes ago uh the defense is good but how do you establish just kidding I'll start with you Benjamin I'm starting with I did the no look pass earlier uh how do you establish some offensive Rhythm if you're South Carolina uh that's that's the question right you know Lenor sers we know about his athleticism he he's run the ball particularly well out of the pocket he can do all those sorts of things but there needs to be some plays I think made by some wide receivers you know what receivers is going to step up and make a play um in the game they've run the ball somewhat effectively got a touchdown early although I'll be it a short one from from rocket Sanders but it's about commitment to the Run commitment to the pass look it's going to be frustrating I think you heard some of the fans talk about booing about how frustrating it is but there has to continue to be a commitment in this second half the great thing though Dar is that the defense is keeping them in this game the defense is keeping them alive getting turnovers at at opportune times that are turning into points they got seven points off of the turnovers and so that's what's going to keep them in this game but the offense needs to establish a Rhythm the only way to do that is by a player stepping up and making a huge play to build momentum for everybody else you know we haven't give a lot of teams this weekend that are playing overmatched opponents much credit for for winning on the lines of scrimmage because we expect that to happen we've seen that with South Carolina's defense against odu's offensive line but we haven't seen this offensive line for South Carolina imposing their will on the ODU front like this was what we've been talking about all offseason was all the young guys that got experience last year how much better the offens Line's going to be you know I've been waiting to see rocket Sanders go off the Lenor sers debut and the rocket Sanders debut there in in Columbia were supposed to be the two biggest storylines to this point and largely disappointing for the first 30 minutes remember how Troublesome their offensive line was a year ago too South CS was not good now I know they were banged up and they really suffered through a lot of things gave up 41 sacks they've given up three in the first half against an inferior opponent and he Old Dominion so that's a concern the offense um we kind of just worked that out as the first half kind of went through came back in saw what they were trying to do against us as a defense and then came back out in the second half made those adjustments we were aggressive and then ultimately ended up you know picking up in the second half we're not ready to annoy anybody or say anything great he he had some really good blocking in front of him he did a tremendous job he's got to continue to work to get better so that we can trust him and put him in other things and we've got other backs are really good players too throughout Spring ball summer fall Camp we've seen those guys be able to make plays step up whenever maybe somebody's you know you got a hamstring you got you're out somebody's out you know they got to step up moments but Aaron obviously not the start offensively for South Carolina but what are your what are your big takeaways from the first half well first off the defense looked great I think that's the one thing that they wanted to improve the front seven got out for the quarterback stopped the run on the out side offensively they only one returning starter from a year ago so a lot of new pieces new quarterback new receivers working in that offensive line uh and obviously a new running back in rocket Sanders as well so hopefully they made the adjustments we see a little bit more explosiveness there in the in the second half through the passing game would be awesome but uh yeah the offense has not been what we thought it would be this through the first half of this football game Dave South Carolina will get the football to start the second half they won the opening toss and deferred so that offense will be back on the field here in a matter of moments not from a statistical standpoint what you were thinking for South Carolina 143 yds of offense 24 yds through the air 119 on the ground but that defense was something now for South Carolina in the first half they held ODU to just 97 total yards so from a coach's perspective what do you try to do to maybe get this pass game going what are you looking to do what would be the safe thing route to go well I think the safe route would be get your quarterback on the Run easy completions in the flats continue to run the ball but I just want to see you take some shots to build some confidence well here it looks like they're going to try one right out out of the gates a lot of pushing and shoving going down the field Jared Brown the intended target covered back there by rased reason they did take the shot he took the shot but he had another guy wide open on a deep cross for probably about a 25 yard gain if not more if he catches it so like that's the balance like you want to take shots but you still got to read the defense if you got a safety drop in with a corner two-on-one situation there is a wide openen deep cross that would have been a chunk play for this offense to get going Lenor sers keeps it himself out over the 30 to the 33 yd line will Jones brings down that big frame of Lenor sers at 63 240 lb out of Florence South Carolina seven yd pickup oh and that's something to if you get into these third and medium situations I think they just got to get some completions you you know look at them right now four of 11 24 yds passing yet there's no rhythm between him and his receiving core or tight ends at the moment so you just got got to get some easy quick completions and off to Sanders and he will be shy of the 35 it's going to be fourth down Jaylen white mlan steps up into that hole and now it's fourth down and a looks like it's going to be about a half a yard maybe closer to a full yard the Gamecocks going to keep their offense out there it appears I'm sure this is a little bit from obviously the B Grant Wilson Paige goes in motion to the wide side they will go to the pass Mark and that's a first down catch made by Miles Austin his second year with ODU a former pit panther picks up 18 that's a great job by Grant Wilson sitting in there getting hit right in the chops and just a miscommunication on the back field with the motion both Defenders kind of playing outside leverage no one taking the inside receiver down the middle of the field wide open for the first down completion he'll stack a couple of receivers wide to each side there and young in the backfield they'll hand it to him he gets close to Midfield and will power his way into South Carolina territory for a pickup of five Debo Williams with a stop there Debo the senior at of Smyrna High School in Delaware 113 stops last and he's last name Clowny yeah that last Clowny he was a terror too Aaron Young in the back field on first down and 10 Isaiah pige breaks a tackle to the 26 yd line that's Mr consistent right there 43 and then flings it out to the side for an injured player not only does he throw it sidearm but puts it pretty accurately to his back out of the back field 10c run off the clock was stopped for a runner who made the line of game and went out of bounds so no 10-second runoff as you heard from our referee Daniel goo as the runner was out of bounds so the clock was already stopped boy Grant Wilson in the second half has really calmed things down for this Old Dominion team he's 21 of 36 194 yards one TD one pick that pick came in a Red Zone actually it was a second and goal situation I think making a pick in the end zone and then the one big mistake on the fumble you know ends up running the football ball gets popped out I mean that's that's could be end up being the difference and it's unfortunate cuz he has had I would consider a pretty darn good football game here on the road first game of the season but you have to understand the way your defense is playing and it's a quarterback rule number one protect the football and I'm sure that's going to be the number one thing if they're unable to find a way to pull this one out and win it here in the last drive it's be the one play that he's going to be dreaming about or having nightmares about this evening one of the things that happened in the first half South Carolina got to the quarterback five sacks they hit Wilson a bunch in the second half they've yet to allow a sack well he's been getting the ball out I will say this like there's partly due to fear but the ball has been getting out of his hands a lot quicker here in the second half Aaron Young in the back field they will throw it to him nice little catch ball was hot coming his way OD Donald Fortune pushes him out of bounds and I still with a minute 40 I still think you can continue to take these completions you don't have to feel like you got to throw 10 15 yard plays down the field you just got to keep getting first downs minute 40 with the timeout it's a lot of time still again dropping eight over the Middle High throw that one's picked off Jaylen Kilgore just saved the day for South Carolina his second career interception comes at the most opportune time with 129 to play take another look I don't know this was passes maybe a tad bit off from the quarterback yeah just high it's very difficult for receiver to be able to go up there and Dave this defense has played great today all three levels thought the front four while they may not have been able to put the pressure they were able to do in the first half have done a great job with hands full with Old Dominion but you didn't think it'd come down to this scenario so how long do you let this one linger before you start worried about Kentucky I that's the hard part like you you you know you're you're glad you got the rust off you got a lot of experience for a lot of guys especially on offense so I mean there's going to be a lot of film review and and learning from this game but man you got Kentucky next week obviously see what Kentucky looks like in the game right after this but they themselves got a brand new quarterback at Brock Vandergriff going to be a first year start our former Georgia quarterback you know that's we're going to have to get a good action for him but on the road next week it is their third it will be 30 seconds please reset the game clock to 1 minute 27 seconds thank you listen we always say you learn a lot from your first season to your second season at at any position you learn a lot too from week one the week two you know this is it's a big difference I don't care who the opponent is getting out there and actually playing a game in front of thousands and thousands of fans and getting those Jitters out so you got to start figuring out I mean offense you got to figure out who The Playmakers are you got to find out who are Playmakers and how can we get them the ball more often next week because if you're a one-dimensional football team in this league if it all it is is rocket and Lenoris running the football defenses n are too big and too strong in the front seven you will not be able to move the ball effectively hey they average 3.5 yards per Rush have to be better than that yeah and of course they ever 85 yards a game a year ago they put up 188 though they'll lose a few on this Lenora sers back pedal but there are still some things they got to work out you know I mean obviously the wide receivers they got to find somebody they can rely on in that group I think defensively they're going to be able to play in
