women's soccer team kicks off our coverage here on Yellow Jacket TV by taking on W lacrosse in the 2024 season opener for both teams the yellow jackets coming off of a campaign in which they went 166 And1 overall in 2023 13-1 in the umac Alison negro in her eighth season at the Helm of the Yellow Jacket program WS is coming off their third straight um regular season title their third straight um tournament title and their third straight trip to the NCAA tournament yel jackets returning 10 of 11 starters from last season Squad including the program's all-time leading scorer in Nia Wilson Wilson Ned 26 goals and added 10 assists for the L jackets in 2023 and now stands at 68 career goals in counting for her wws career she'll be joined in the forward line for the L jackets this season by Maya Holquist another returner for the L jackets after scoring 17 goals and adding 13 assists in her jior season a year ago Wilson and homequest now have combined for 110 goals in their respective W Superior careers defensively the El jackets returned umac Defensive Player of the Year Brenda Matson who made 20 starts last season and logged 1546 minutes of game time the El jackets also welcome back an all region midfielder and lindry shendel who scored two goals and added five assists in 2023 for the 2023 campaign by the way the elj had scored 75 goals while surrendering 23 and were named UMC preseason favorites for the annual coaches poll that was released on August 27th so strong team coming back for coach deot in her a season at the helm the same can be said to ww lacrosse the Eagles very very strong program Under head coach Jason Murphy in his 11th season lacrosse coming off of a campaign in which they went 20 wins one loss and two draws in 2023 including a perfect excuse me 7 and0 in the wak the Eagles claimed their third straight wak title in 2023 and returned nine of their 11 stars from that team lacrosse Advanced all the way to the NCAA division 3 tournament quarterfinal round before falling to Washington University of St Louis and penalty kicks amongst returners for the Eagles in the Midfield are the duo of Ellie AR and Ellie beny who were both named to the first team all wak performance or performers for the Eagles in 2023 AR finished the season with four goals and five assists last season while Beni added three goals and two assists lacrosse also returns a pair of defensive stalwarts and second team All-American Alexis McMahon and goalkeeper Sophia anger McMahon was named umac Defensive Player of the Year each of the last two seasons while making 18 starts in 2023 and logging 1,000 and 58 minutes while contributing four assists as well a very complete player is McMahon in the back anger meanwhile gave up just eight goals and 22 appearances last season was named goalkeeper of the year for her efforts overall the Eagles scored 64 goals a year ago and gave up just 11 tallies in 2023 and were named Wyatt conference favorites in the preseason Wyatt coaches poll that was released on August 22nd so two very strong teams here making their season debuts here in duth Minnesota for our inaugural broadcast here on yel Jaa TV and with that the case we will take a quick break and then come back with the starting lineups national anthem and then the opening kick of the season opener between the Yellow Jacket women's soccer team all the playby playay as the Yellow Jackets opening up the 2024 campaign taking on the team that knocked them out the NCAA tournament a year ago in W lacrosse that was the last matchup obviously between these two teams a one- nothing contest lacrosse scoring the game-winning goal about Midway into the second half of that contest and of course the Eagles going all the way to the final eight the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament before being knocked out by Washington University of St Louis who ended up being the national runner up Cal Lutheran your national champions a year ago in division three women's soccer we'll take a quick look at the starting Keepers here first for the El jackets it'll be the native of right here in duth quen Clark in her Junior season now made 13 starts for wws a year ago played over 1400 or excuse me 1,47 minutes gave up 14 goals a year ago goals against the average of 1 Point .20 made 57 saves and had a record of 64 and one she will be in goal for the L jackets will be going from left to right in this opening 45 minuts and as we talked about in the open getting the start in goal for the Eagles Sophia anger the reigning wak goalkeeper of the Year appeared in 22 games a year ago played nearly 1,800 minutes in goal for the Eagles a year ago gave up just eight goals made 53 saves and a save percentage of 869 and went 191 and two last season in goal she will be defending the goal to our right quen Clark in the goal to our left yellow jackets in the white jerseys will be going from left to right here in this opening 45 minutes while the will tackle out we'll have another throw here coming up pope now on the right foot Sophia Pope coming into the 18 plays it across the face of goal sitting in the six couple players trying to dig it out of there and finally getting away from sawadsky was the elj defense jul sawatski had at her foot inside the elj six now here's a ball in here's ER back out on Top Shot comes toward goal not down now by Nia Wilson and she'll clear it near Side Eagles already with a pair of goals in the back of the net looking for more McMahon now to the outside Chelsea Gail ball into the six cut off now bolied out now they'll play it to The Far Side Pope again with all kinds of space gets a shot away comes in and that one will be TI out by Clark very similar to the first goal of game actually that was about the same spot that Pope served it in that ended up in the back of the Yellow Jacket net that one came just two minutes into this opening half and then sa off of a giveaway top of the 18 just fired one deflected off of Clark into the back of the goal and that's where we stand two nothing here first corner kick of the contest this one will be taken by Chelsea Gale bending ball comes into the six headed Away now by Maya Holquist Eagles first to the ball Gail on the right foot beared away now by shendel now Holquist trying to switch the field played it well over the top there of Nia Wilson far and that one will go out of play goal kick here coming up both these teams like to play a lot of numbers in fact the Eagles a year ago didn't have one single player reach double figures in goals but they did have 15 different goal scores on the season so it is nothing new for Jason murphrey Squad to have different goal scores elj meanwhile and 16 different goal scores a year ago so both these teams spread the wealth around on offense as this ball sent to the outside here's Sophia Pope balls taken there by Bren Crystal for the El jackets and she'll play it all the way back now here's Quinn score of 3 nothing as we jump into our first half summary the goals being scored the first one of the Season being scored officially by Jullian swatski the sophomore for from Mount Prospect Illinois they have the assist right now for Lindsay sansy although in talking with the sports information folks here at wws very well could have been Sophia Pope either way it was a cross that came in from the right side of the Box by bounced off of the crossbar down wws keeper quen Clark could not find it and on the doorstep to poke it into the back of the net was sasi first goal of the Season that one coming at 207 to make it a one- nothing lead about five minutes later second goal of the Season unassisted for the Eagles being scored by the sophomore from Oregon high school Aubrey SAA is picking up a loose ball near the LJ at 18 and firing a shot that deflected off of the onrushing Quinn Clark's hands as she tried to come off of her line and cut down the angle couldn't quite get there in time and it bounced into the back of the net that made it two to nothing and then about 7 minutes after that tally it was the two-time wak Defensive Player of the Year Alexis McMahon who did not score a goal last year well she has one this season season opener this season for mcmah the senior Defender from San Jose California taking a step inside near the Yellow Jacket 18 and Roofing a shot over the top of Queen Clark who had no chance to make a save on that shot from the right foot of Alexis McMahon just a beautiful goal for McMahon and that makes it 3- nothing and that's where we stand here at the intermission in that first half the El jackets were out shot 16-2 shots on goal 10 to1 in favor of the Eagles W lacrosse also with all five corners in that first half one yellow card handed out in the opening 45 minutes that was to Caitlyn CTS of w lacrosse in the last few minutes of the half total of six fouls were called in the opening 45 minutes four them against the yellow jackets Quinn course as the season moves along but this was really an opportunity for the yjs to kind of measure themselves see the things that they need to improve on and see where they stood and overall not a terrible performance by the El jackets by any stretch of the imagination but this is a very potent opponent in UD lacrosse and they will jump on your mistakes and that'll certainly I think be a theme
