Polaris crew return space X's Polaris Dawn crew are back down on Earth following their first ever commercial space walk 700 kilm above the surface of the Earth the capsule made its re-entry early Sunday splash down off the Florida coast ends a successful 5-day Mission standing by for a splash down of the polaron crew and there you can spacex's Dragon capsule arrives safely back on Earth after its crew completed the world's first all civilian spacewalk Tech billionaire Jared isman paid an undisclosed sum for the private Mission with SpaceX the 5-day trip took him and three amateur astronauts higher than the inter International Space Station and the Hubble [Music] telescope stex back at home we all have a lot of work to do but from here birth sure looks like a perfect world this wasn't a conventional free floating spacewalk instead the billionaire and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis took turns emerging only partially from the capsule while holding on to a ladder dubbed the Skywalker it's one big step for the future of space travel which used to be reserved only for professional astronauts the crew also tested out new space suits it's the first of three missions under the Polaris program and it brings SpaceX closer to its ultimate goal of sending humans to Mars and Beyond Keith Cowing, NASAwatch.com Editor are well for more about this story and the mission we welcome in the show Keith coing editor of NASA watch.com in Washington DC Keith the Polaris Dawn Mission has achieved the first ever Space Walk by non-government astronauts how does that change uh the landscape of commercial space travel well welcome to the 21st century uh it used to be as you said that only a government employee were regardless of what space agency sent them up could do this now with commercial space ticking off and the ability to literally write a check and buy a mission and help the company develop Technologies you too check with your editor and your producers travel budget but you too and I could go up and outter space wow yes I need to save up for that a bit I would assume but another Milestone of this Mission Polaris Dawn lifted astronauts higher than anyone has traveled since NASA went to the Moon and three times higher than the International Space Station why did they go that high uh for several reasons one and I don't mean to be flippant but because they could but what they're trying to do here is show that the dragon spacecraft which has flown to the International Space Station dozens of times has much more capability of going higher in this case uh in much higher orbit surviving through minimum but still important radiation belts and if you're going to go to other worlds you're going to need to take the spacecraft beyond the safety so to speak of low earth orbit which is exactly what they did uh and as a matter of fact SpaceX wanted to make sure the electronics work so they took the electronics put them inside a medical radiation device and Zapped it as long as they could and to see if it would still work so uh this was this was groundbreaking not just with the people but with the Machinery now there's also a new generation of space suits that was tested during uh that mission uh what are the Innovations well you know if you look at the space suits that you would find in the International Space Station I have a little toy here but they look a lot like what they were on the moon because they were directly developed from that some of the space suits on the space station are 40 years old nearly as old as some of the people living up there and it's taken NASA far too long to make new ones and large amounts of money isaacman made an investment and SpaceX was able to come up with these space suits in less less than three years they still are not you know like NASA has because you need to take your space suit and plug in the oxygen line but that said they can develop these things very fast like consumer products cheaper and faster again welcome to the 21st century where it's cheaper to buy a space suit from a company and develop it at a space agency just very very briefly we're running out of time but how much you guess what was the ticket price I'm not sure but based on the cost of what it takes to buy ticket and the fact that he's Isaac been this is his second flight and he's going to do two more I would say he's probably into this for several hundred million dollars I don't know how they I'm guessing I don't know but it's not insignificant but again these people have the money to do it absolutely thank you very much Keith King there editor of NASA watch.com Washington DC thank you Keith
