welcome back the school year starting also marks the start of the next Sports season I'm joined Now by wbb's own digital sports reporter Jonah BR bronstein with the latest news and our local sports hi Jonah thanks so much for coming in Hi Chelsea happy to be here okay now you've been covering University of Buffalo at Buffalo Sports for the last 19 football seasons and I've seen some changes to the coaching staff several times but the season is no different right no exception so tell us about the new coach the team is bringing on yeah Pete LMO I would call him a personality hire for a program that needed a cultural refresh and he comes in he brings an affable Nextdoor neighborly vibe to the program and I think he's endeared himself to the players with that and as fans get to know him and have gotten to know him through his first summer here in Buffalo I think he's going to be very popular with that um our own Jackie Walker kind of went out there and did a story on him that is on our website wb.com we can get to know Pete limo's personality a little bit better that way and he's quick to quote Classic Movies rock song lyrics and there's been a lot of fun with him around campus so far okay nice well he's not the only new kid on the Block there's some new players on the team too right yeah there's been some losses in the transfer portal and as any college program in any sport has to do right now that you're kind of re-recruiting your roster over and over again but there's some exciting players back local names that people will recognize the one that really embodies kind of the improved team morale is linebacker Shawn dolak he's a West senica native he led the country in t tackles two years ago last year a season ended early because of injury and then he ended up transferring out spending the spring semester on the roster at Utah State but with the coaching change he got some good reviews from his teammates about Pete LMO and sha dox back here at UB it's almost like he never left even though he did go to another school for half of the Academic Year and he's back as the linebacker and you can see that he's excited to be leading that Bulls defense this year beautiful well what can we expect from the opening game is that tonight the opening game's tonight 7:00 at UB Stadium uh the opener at UB is usually the biggest crowd of the year it kind of has the best atmosphere and environment some of that's weather related some of that's related to there's no NFL football no Bills game to distract people this weekend also High School football is a week away so UB has all the attention all the football excitement is on the college game this weekend and they play an FCS team Lafayette from the lower division football championship subdivision normally a team like Buffalo being a division 1A program is going to win that game comfortably but UB has lost to an FCS opponent each of the last two years that was kind of an embarrassing setback under Coach Maurice linguist and lafayette's a good FCS team ranked number 17 in the country at their division so this should be a competitive game it's a game UB should win and I think better coaching and better team spirit is going to play into them playing a better game and getting a better result tonight all righty I want to move on now to uh UB soccer team can you tell us about that They just won a pretty major game in Pittsburgh right yeah it was a signature win for the UB women's soccer team and the university in general Pittsburgh was ranked number seven in the country at the time Pittsburgh's a team that UB played in the NCA tournament two years ago and this is the first time a UB team in any sport has beaten a team ranked in the top 10 wow and now this is the second year in a row UB women's soccer has beaten a major Conference team they won last year at Ohio State and that's the only win a buffalo team has ever had against Ohio State okay now I just want to touch on someone that's really exciting Jessica pakula you know we know the pulas they icons here in Buffalo but Jessica Pula is um playing in the US Open so tell us about how she's doing Jessica bua won her Opening match at the US Open late Tuesday night she's the number six seed moving on to the second round tonight she beat a player Shelby Rogers another American who will be retiring now and that was there was a tearful hug that Jessica Pula and Shelby had after that match because they had played together in the junior circuit but Jessica Pula was on and after a rough start earlier in the season she's considered one of the outside favorites to contend to win this tournament okay so she's expected to do well yeah she's she had won two tournaments or she had gotten to the finals in two tournaments coming into this and won the Canadian open and she's never broken through past the quarterfinals at a grand slim event but she's been to the quarterfinals six times in recent years and with the way she's been playing the last month or so uh this seems like a good opportunity for her to move on to the semi-finals and maybe the finals at a grand slim event all righty Jonah thank you so much we're going to have to keep
