and they were never really threatening the second half England but actually how would you describe their performance in the second 45 minutes second performance it felt to me a little B like they took their foot off the gas a bit I feel maybe maybe because Island didn't they didn't come at them as I thought they would a bit more um positive I thought Agana done very well for him he tried i' would like to have seen Ferguson maybe on earlier maybe he's got an injury but I thought for ink from England's point of view it's the kind of game the way we started and the way we played I thought we should have pressed it pressed it pressed it home a little little bit more started in the same with the same intensity maybe see if you could get three or four and just go just play the game that way bit more ruthless it's a little bit that's been England's problem for a little bit has it they have a good 45 minutes but they don't kick on and make it a good 90 minutes necessarily yeah but the frustrating thing for today was Ireland were there for the take and England dominated the first half we we kind of Praise them their decision making their quality their movement that was the opposite for the second half I thought they were awful the second half players playing for themselves taking too many touches try and playing Roy Rovers pass keep doing the basics and suck Ireland out but Ireland played with a lot of Pride obviously the second half but as good as our England on the first half I thought they were just as bad the second half really players playing for themselves even the substitutions players stolling off showing a bit of arrogance there's a team there for to take in especially for attacking players right if you're on that pitch you're thinking I've got chances here to go and score a goal let's hear from the goal scorers then Dean rice and Jack Gish both with Gabriel Clark yes guys back in Ireland a goal each deck how' you sum up your afternoon yeah really good um obviously the manager's first game um and yeah win you know in the Nations League obviously we're in the in the league below where we want to be so we know how important it is to to win this group and to come here today and win I think it was really important and um to score alongside Jack it was a it was a really nice feeling as well Jack was the reception all you expected and and did it give you a little extra yeah it's what uh I think me and deck expected um listen it didn't I said before the game I think it's different you know like me and deck have you know nothing bad to say you know uh we both enjoyed our time you know playing it I certainly did and um you know I have a lot of Irish in my family so there's no like bad blood what's soever from from my side um obviously you know going back to myself you know I need to start playing regularly scoring goals and you know that's what I did today I still felt you know I'm not 100% fit fit but um you know I'm getting there so from a personal point of view yeah I'm happy after the summer and it really hurt to miss out what did to today mean to you everything you know just then at the end you know going to the fans and hearing them sing my name and stuff uh listeners know everyone will say the exact same feel there's no better feeling you know than playing for England especially in games like this you know when you know the whole nation you know is going to be watching and stuff like that so over the summer you know I've said it before in another another interview honestly it was yeah probably one of the worst Summers you know know of of my life because you can't not see everything that's happening in front of you so um it was difficult but you know it's G me you know more um what's that word more something to bounce back than know word resolve maybe for final Point did we see in the two goals and the structure the play the dynamism the the Lee carsley Hallmark what he wants to put into this team um yeah I think so but also I think we scored hundreds of goals under GFF like that I think gets overlooked a lot that we did score some amazing goals under G so for Lee to come in today's first game I think it's been really refreshing this week um you know he's been amazing to work with his meetings have been top the way he's worked in training's been really good um and I've really enjoyed it so's Jack and so's V the lad so it's been a fresh start it's been a change um but a win for him today and for ourselves to get off to a good start is uh was probably the main thing for us thank you very much guys thank you let's have a look at the and actually was really interesting watching pitch side as it were you can really see that Jack Gish does play with a smile on his face which was terrific to see but look at this first goal the movement from Gordon the pass from Alexander brilliant fantastic if there's one player you want to give time in the ball in that area obviously is Trent should have SC with the first effort and again Rice doing what he does coming in coming in late and when that breaks him you just know he's got that finish in him he's got a good technique beautiful finish and and a deserved lead for England and then Roy loves it and there will be watching for this now quick one two so hard to defend against proba Roy was so disappointed with the second half because they were very good in in the first half with this kind of play they moved the ball quickly the onew's really caused them problems you can see them not close enough to people one two's in the areas where they can't really get close and I think the Finish is very good from where he was as well he saw exactly where the keeper was put it the other side I was really pleased with it's a brilliant goal and again when it's so when it's slow slow and then it's quick quick quite hard to defend against obviously would be disappoint they had the numbers back but a brilliant finish football is such a serious business it's great to see someone like Jack Green who is just loving being out there happens to be playing in an England sh in an international but just somebody who could clearly loves the game for what it is he's obviously likable fell I walked in a little bit of villain again a really nice kid is's interviewed and you can underestimate the setback he had in the summer being left out of a squad but we obious say with disappointments if you're going to be a top player or have a career for a long time you have to deal with disappointments the best way to deal with is that go and perform and we always say he needs to do more at the end game in terms of goals lovely finish and he'd be delighted they well done how do you sum up your first match as England interim manager I thought it was um thought it was good in Parts I think um you know you've seen some of the things that we've tried to do um I think the lads have got to take a lot of credit well all of the credit um I think we've you know we've we've we've showed that we've got some real talent um and yeah we can be really pleased with the clean sheet as well as a returning former Irish player what do you make of rice and greish getting the goals I think yeah I thought they they both took their goals really well um you know really really while work moves um and the brilliant finishes um and I think I think they can both uh moveing forward score a lot more goals and add goals to their game how important was today for Jack Gish CU he he's told us how difficult the summer was for him so just to come in to play to make an impact yeah I think like I said I don't think he's he's definitely got not got anything to prove to to to us uh we can see his quality um so yeah I think um that I've done him the world good today in terms of you know getting another goal for England so um hopefully he can continue that for did we see in the two goals the sort of play the Hallmark you want to put on this team well again like it's not it's you know I wouldn't call it my style or my way of playing it's it's uh you know it's the players have got to take a lot of credit and um the way that they they took on some of the things that we we spoke about moving moving the ball forward quickly running forward and trying to get in Pockets I thought they done I thought they done really well Anthony Gordon told us this week about how much he wanted a chance what what dimension did he add well on a really dry uh sticky pitch you know it's not not of an ideal for for dribblers but I thought Anthony was very good a real threat um you know he's he's carried on his his his form from from last season and yeah he looks looks real real dangerous player was the disappointment elements of the second half not not scoring more I think you've got to give Island Credit as well I think uh they're very resilient they they um they Clos the gaps you know our space maybe come out a little bit wider so we found it a little bit more difficult to to get through them but you know at at at 2-0 we um you know we were we were quite comfortable well first day of school for Lee carsley as well I would imagine big side relief from him at the end of this day as well and because with the whole business of the national anthem he's he's learned quite a lot about what entails the England manager's job I think yes yes he has but like like he's shown before he's he's all business you know he's like he said he's he's focusing on the football maybe that's a bit of naivity in respect of what it what it takes to to be the England manager and what you need to be able to to deal with but in respects of the way the team started saying that he wants to see something different and he's we're going to see something different we did in the first half it was a lot sharper it was a lot quicker what I would like to have seen maybe the substitutes a little bit earlier but the second half wasn't as good simply because for whatever reason they took their foot off the gas island did get better but I I I do feel that we we're seeing something we're seeing something you just want to see that progress and in terms of his personality a couple of your old teammate said to me earlier he's a very funny man he's got a good sense of humor there's nothing wrong on the first day of a new school of not giving it the big I am of just letting your character come out slowly and gently but I would suggest that may be a good thing if that does happen he's handled it well against all new twim he again it had um problems this morning with silly headlines but he'd want his team to go and express themselves and they did that but like any manager he'd be frustrated with the the second half performance but overall he'd be pleased I'm but he's glad to get out the way you can now look forward to the game on Tuesday because it's not easy you know there different challenges for him even dealing with with the media before the game after game stuff he's got to get used to but he he handled himself very very well there's one outstanding player if it seems Ireland have up front Evan Ferguson and when he came on Sam he hadn't played since March because of injury quite clearly they need him to be fit and regularly available if they're going to do anything in this group yeah there is obviously he came on the scene but in the last 12 months he's had injuries particularly at Brighton but there's a lot of big expectations with irand I think it's about unfair he's still a young player he's learn his trade but yeah listen there's big expectations for him and hopefully he can back the key for him is to stay fit and get playing games regularly and then he can have a big impact for Ireland just a word about angel Gomez when he came on was great again to see his just to see his beaming smile and there's an alternative maybe to a kobby Mayo isn't there possibly for England well yeah and what we saw is a very busy very confident capable player you know he's somebody that we we've seen he was he was one of the players one of the main players in the Eng a 21 Euros win he's he's a player that's been playing for England since under 15 went across the from the M Manchester United Academy then you know he went to um was it in in Portugal went to bista B Vista played 30 games and then he's back to Li and it's one of the best players in respects of his chances created for them he deserves his call up he looked comfortable he he look comfortable you know especially when you Gareth did mention we haven't got a player of that character in England when he mentioned Calvin Phillips and he's there playing for the under 21's winning tournament so I'm really pleased for him that he got his chance absolutely well we're going out in Dublin I'm assuming if we say we're friend of Roy Keane we're shown to the best bar in duin the best seats they expensive around here
