four decades if things get a little tough around Tucson only two words are necessary bear down and that's what the Arizona wild cats hope to do in front of their homestanding fans today there's nothing quite like a great rivalry matchup in college football the bitterness the intensity the lifetime of memories that will come as a result of what we're about to see in this one as we'll see a squad from the Mountain West the New Mexico Lobos taking on the 16th ranked team in the land the Arizona Wildcats for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis joined here in the booth by David poll and Jesse Palmer and guys let's get this thing started globals will put total leather to crank us up the returner will field it and bring it back really disciplined job by the cover unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 the Wildcats offense will take the first swing of the game they're always butterflies to start a game but when you have a rivalry like this the adrenaline is pumping on overdrive guys they aren't all the same we say that but we know differently the blood is boiling the temperature is hot Jesse you want this week more than most yeah David we played in these games before everything just seems to be heightened right the game seems to be moving faster the crowd noise feels louder your composure will be tested early in a game like this he's brought down quickly minimal game there still a bit short of the first down they have relished this tight victory since the last time these two got together paa guys just winning is beautiful and when you beat your rival and you get those bragging rights Palmer it is a glorious thing for a whole year and sometimes longer that's the best thing about rivalry games like this for the winning team whoever pulls this one out here today their fans are going to be bragging about this one for a long time the wild cats will have to send out the punt team a quick three and out and they're already giving up the ball and the coverage team able to wrestle him down so New Mexico's offense will go to work for the first time as we take a look at our impact players for this game David what do you look for to make an impact from your leaders your leaders not only have to lead the football team but they got to step up and make plays on the field keep everybody calm these guys typically do a really good job of them yeah David and they also generally set the tone for their respective football teams regardless of which side of the ball they play on the teammates look towards them to step up in big games like this his freshman quarterback has a hose did he Zing that thing in there off the play fake on first down to throw and the ball's out and they're after it and the defense has it there going the other way he's into the open down the middle touchdown Arizona don't just get the ball score with the ball and the defense did they draw First Blood and that is exactly what you want to open the season with a drive like that and how about this defense making plays not only do you force the fumble the awareness to scoop it up understand the difference between trying to jump on it but pick it up and make a play they make a play and offense they have not put together a lot of scoring drives and now they give up points on the other end they got to get it together and the extra point is good and it's seven nothing they're out there to kick it off the return team must rivet that ball to their rib cage can't afford another turnover he'll bring it out it's Williams rolling the dice to bring it out of the end zone did not work out as he stopped at the 13 now New Mexico will go back to work on offense looking for a productive play on first down from the gun they'll try the middle he's Dro behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three don't you love energetic defenses that fly around that make things happen the ones that get in the back field the running back tries to go some where do you want him to go there there is nowhere to go nice job by the defense creating the tackle for a Los on first down he'll try to pop the draw not much there he gets one to the 11 and these defensive tackles just eat people they swallowed un beans when you get near they're so big so strong those guys those running backs coming they just need a mid they put one mid on a running back and he usually falls to the ground just because of their sheer mass and strength love to see these third down conversions on offense and they're out to their own 39 yd line and the L will snap it on First and 10 quick completion to the right and he delivers the blow and he's still running they've got the defense reeling right now with that big play to the 29 I know it's early in the game but defensively after that play you know you have to tackle the catch when this guy gets the ball in his hands he is so dangerous after the fact so it's okay for him to make catches just got to get him to the ground quickly hit as he throws hit hard just as he released it on first down and just couldn't get it to the receiver I know you want to prepare for every game the same way but there's just something different about rivalry games Jesse it's because ree I think players are aware that games like this Define your legacy as a player your record in rivalry games is something that people are going to talk about for years and years down the road you have got to show up and play your best football in games like this looking to throw it's dampier b a little time lets it Go finds his big tight end good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch it's not a great feeling on defense too when you're blitzing you're expecting to get a sack you're expecting to get a hit on the quarterback if the offensive line and running backs pick it up uhoh because now you have one less guy in the back end trying to cover all these receivers and tight ends and you know you're in trouble there to stop him after a pick up of three it's down to the 15 yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you clearly want to always establish the tempo run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge got three on first down it's second and seven they'll keep it on the ground able to get one down to the 15 [Applause] third they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here third and long and he'll try to throw for it headed to the end zone and he waltzes in for the score touchdown New Mexico what an example of this quarterback just putting his offense on his back drop back wanted to throw throw the ball downfield nobody open no problem extend the play by himself some time and then take off with his legs to score that touchdown Pat unit on the field exra Point hit that one with some aggression for the point after time game and seven and we're all square as he's set to kick it away on the run from inside his own five makes a move got a little room wide open and it's a foot race he will score touchdown Arizona boy nothing electrifies a stadium quite like a return for a touchdown it's always so exciting cuz you don't see him very often you got to go so many yards 80 90 yards at a time what a great job by the returners showing the speed providing the electricity there's a reason they're all jacked up it's it off and he takes this from inside the five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 we will get her another look at this New Mexico offense got blown out in the first half and now just desperate to find anything to generate momentum here in the third quarter it just starts with one play though you just need one thing to go right for this offense to start to build that momentum and then that becomes infectious for the defense for special teams everything can change it just takes one play they really can and it's so strange and you can't quantify and I don't know how to describe it as a coach or as a player but you got to make something happen and it's got to start on this drive and the defense makes the stop after a minimal gain fairly manageable distance here on third down from the 27 looking to pass it's Danier he finds a soft spot in the middle that's the kind of play that can really get you going as they get it out to the 36 really nice job there by the quarterback understanding that it's Zone coverage on third down you're going to have to find someone working into a soft spot get the ball out of your hands quickly make an accurate throw and pick up the first well done last play was a near disaster now dealing with second and 13 unlock they'll run it from the gun One Step WRA Two Step squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long he has to throw for it grabbed in the middle it's Jones didn't pick up a bot there moved it Forward just a few the Lobos will punt it away on fourth down they've been busy out there to punt for the fifth time today another punt on the way got to make sure those hammies and glutes all activated don't want any muscle pulls from overuse pretty solid coverage there and they'll stop him at the 26 wild Arizona has it back the coming out to Bear down this offense has really been clicking in the game so far Jesse no doubt everything their play caller is dialing up these guys offensively have been able to go out and execute David yeah and it's just maintaining the lead keep doing what you've been doing you got a big lead let's just keep piling it on until they find an answer after picking up a couple it's second and eight he's looking to throw got it in the middle it's Miranda and he's down at the 41 that's a first down I don't know who on defense is going to cover this guy honestly he could be a problem for this defense over the middle of the field in the passing looking for space it's Conley and he won't quite get there but boy after that pick up just a few inches to go for the first an array of possibilities here and that would be the definition of first down success putting yourself in a good position it's second and inches I can do whatever I want next I can take a shot down the field I can run the football and get a new set of downs like nice first down execution here's the handoff slammed to the ground but not before he gets the first down he now has 80 yards rushing and he's making his presence felt in this first game little touch pass to the receiver and he has a solid gain before the defense bottles him up well and on these little push passes timing is so important you're trying to snap it right as he's getting a full head of steam when he gets the ball he's hitting the outside and David it puts the defense in such a difficult spot you immediately have to be rotating when you see that motion so everybody's got to communicate and kind of bump over that's why offenses love to run it just it makes the defense communicate and see if you can just get him out of a spot Arizona going back to work with another first [Applause] down they'll give it to him again he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three not many hiccups on this drive but it's second and 13 now 42 SPID 42 spider motion from the offense quarterback flips it ahead quickly to the receiver the express way is wide open TouchDown Arizona and the beat down has ensued they've extended this lead guys but sometimes in a rivalry game you get down and you fight back that much harder man you've seen crazy comebacks and crazy swings of momentum and rivalry games you just need that first thing to break your way Pony I think really comes down to their key Playmakers David they can come back these guys need to take ownership Now's the Time in this type of game they have got to step up and start making plays almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touchdown he'll bring it back from inside is five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 let's see what the lios offense has dialed up this time [Applause] makes the grab over the middle I love offenses and quarterbacks that are willing to take the easy stuff take those easy throws that are guaranteed to get positive yards yeah I'm going to take big shots down the field too but don't forget it's easier to pick up second and five third and five than it is when we start getting those long yarded situations ball is at the 35 it's first and 10 hard in the back field it's Jones he's brought down but he went backwards after that completion not the way they had it drawn up lost one on that last one it's second and 11 he's looking to throw and incomplete on the Deep ball and that's an incompletion and really poor accuracy by the quarterback there when you're throwing the ball down the field you don't need to make it perfect but you do got to put somewhere around your receiver you got to give him an the quarterback bought as much time as he could but the defense got to him and second this has been a frustrating day and I'm not sure it's going to get any better you're already down huge listen this offense can't protect this quarterback they don't do anything right right now this defense has had their number all game [Applause] long and the low bows will bring the punt team onto the field and these guys have been busy sixth punt of the day not able to pop the big return but they've got the ball back and ready to go with a fresh possession Arizona sending the offense onto the field that last drive an absolute aerial assault for the touchdown Jesse it was a nice job in play calling too David just giving the quarterback some easy looks and read so he could go out and execute and he knew exactly where to go with the football everything looked really really easy he was hot the ball was coming out of his hands the defense better do something different dropping back it's faf quick strike complete he's brought down but there's a flag on the play let's see if it stands that penalty is going to be a coaching point in position meetings this week I mean he is going to get an earful from the coaches on the sideline give to the running [Applause] back didn't get much on first down it's second and nine takes the hand off it's conle creating some space getting just enough good blocking and they've got it up to the 47 yd line he's up to 90 yd rushing now here in week one a solid start to this new campaign will they keep it on the ground again here on third down they've got it to the 49 yd line and they'll move the chains first down and 10 and that's in Arizona just when they're looking run now up top and the ball's on the ground he picks it up still on his feet does it always seem like that ball is on the ground for like 30 seconds you got 17 guys running at it in slow motion like I got to get the football offense very lucky to get that football back they'll leave it with him find AC crease at the 20 he showed it all there a little elusiveness a little power and he's got the first down first down you know you always want to establish the running game how about this offense nothing fancy run the football be physical get a big game movement here from the tight end going to the run it's Conley he had nowhere to go no place to hide and they'll knock him down for a loss of nine they've got some serious work to do to keep that last one from messing up this drive second and 19 wide receiver now comes in motion quick pass on the Fly motion keeps the legs moving a solid pick up there before the defense is able to make the stop all right so not a home run play for the offense but I do like the creativity and I like how they're going to stress this defense and do it in less conventional ways back to throw it's faf fires to the right can't make the play on the interception and man they were looking for their first pick of the game instead it'll be fourth down and here comes the field goal unit for the second time tonight the holder will put it down on the right Hash a 33 yd try it's good and that'll add three more to a lead that is already way out of hand and let's check in with Kevin Conor in the studio Kevin fellas it's a final now in one of the more intriguing games of the week that notable top 25 clatch Clemson was far from the friendly confines of Death Valley but still managed to scratch out a win and there was a lot of chatter this week about this group not being ready time to check those receipts if you know what I mean really unexpected outcome in this ranked on ranked matchup the type of lost guys that'll get the attention of even a good football team yeah how about that sounds as if they had a good ball game there Kevin thanks for the update let's see what the Lobos offense has in store a little bit backed up to start this drive from their own 18 yd line from the gun he leaves it with the back just finds that little Trevis and he's still up finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down for the off right back back to the well at the 40 there he goes and he was loose and in the open field and on his way a tremendous pick up on that one this offense will snap it from the 42 on First and 10 trying to turn the corner on the right they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one a lot of times offenses will do the FIB formation into the boundary try to take advantage of you necessarily spreading out sending more resources to the field trying to take advantage offense gave it a will but the defense they did not move they did their assignments got the TFO and as an offensive coordinator you don't need the perfect play with this guy as your running back he's going to make the play perfect for you because he makes everybody miss spin moves hurdles stiff arms speed whatever it takes to move the sticks and score touchdown oh picked off trying to take it back and he's wrapped up after a solid return on the pick who says defensive backs don't have hands nice job breing the football and making the catch a lot of times you see guys SWAT it down or you see them trying to catch it looks like they have two left hands defensive backs don't catch real well nice job bre on the football nice job of securing the int and actually catching [Music] it got it AR has it back the offense coming out to Bear down maybe they couldn't pay off that last drive with a touchdown now they move the ball down the field and executed like they wanted to until they stalled out and had to settle for a field I think if you want to take the next step two here and score a touchdown you got to start finding more creative ways to get your best players the ball let's see if they can do that here to the air it's faf showing the arm strength down the left side and it falls incomplete but it could have been much much worse as the defender was right there yeah and I like the shot the aggressive play down the field and we like throwing those jump balls up to my receiver because usually receiver makes the play and makes the defender look bad nice job by the defender getting the hand on it tipping that ball away from the wide receiv that pass not close as he got drilled trying to deliver it and it'll now oh you know what time it is when the defense gets that stop on third down fist up in the air nice job getting to the quarterback putting some pressure on him hitting him forcing the incompletion fourth down baby now New Mexico will go back to work on offense after throwing the pick on the last drive need to take care of the ball this time Jesse we're going to find out a lot about this quarterback right here too how does he fight through adversity after that last Drive yeah clear the mechanism move on that's a part of it you're going to be a great player got to learn how to handle these mistakes and general solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six power football with the run and he's to the 48 yd line that'll be good enough for a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs well no surprise I mean with the way they're running the ball early in this game they're just going to keep doing it and they're just not hammering out two three four yd gains they're gashing this defense you saw it right there complete downfield he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense globals come to the line with a fresh set of downs first off play action on first down he'll P it down got to protect the merchandise gets down without taking a hit offense gets set for second down moving the running back back forcing the defense to adjust unloads to the wide out he's got it he stepped out of bound after a huge play but hang on just a second defense might get bailed out here by a flag you just can't hit the quarterback like that the defender got caught red-handed and guys bringing the heat is what any defense is about but you have to stop short of making that official reach for his flag he's got his man and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no game land defense rolls up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he's got I'll say this man in college football you see a lot of bad tackling you didn't see it right there that was an awesome job first off being there at the point of attack once the tight end made the catch there was no doubt he was going down great job form tackle looking to buy time and he Sprints to the End Zone touchdown Loos and the running back gets his second rushing touchdown of the game you want to continue to feed this guy you could tell he's got a nose for the End Zone knows how to get in there knows how to make things happen [Applause] ready to try the point after for the extra point bangs it through for an extra point so they marched the ball 41 yds on that drive and finish to deal with the short touchdown run from the two just about set to kick it away number set to kick one away he'll start the return inside his five didn't find any crease in that kickoff off coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 Arizona sending the offense onto the [Applause] field takes a hand off it's Conley fighting off the defender he's up to 86 yds rushing in this offense wanted to establish the ground game and man have they started the season right in that regard got it they've got four receivers out there two on either side on second and three dropping back it's faf fires to the wide out HS it in that one could really put this drive into high gear as they have a first down at the 37 here's this offense with a fresh set of downs [Applause] from the gun the give looking for room they can rely on this guy to pick up solid yardage when they need it and he's out to the 43 you want to talk about making it easy for an offensive coordinator you pick up a bunch of yards on first down make that second down really really manageable that's a great job by the offense right back to him on the ground a strong tackle and wrap up from the junior third and from the 44 and we might know if they plan to go for it on fourth down by what they call here wide out in motion he's looking to throw on Third and short and the incomplete pass will bring up fourth down defense did a great job third and short on the opponent side of the field they're expecting quick throw everybody they dug their heel on the ground they're able to break on the ball forc the incompletion he'll call for the fair catch here we will get another look at this New Mexico offense there's certainly still a Hil to climb they've got to make sure these drives pay off got a touchdown last time can they back it up here well and it's amazing in a football game how sometimes they'll surprise you with what you do once you get settled you realize what's going on now I'm comfortable with it Jesse this offense looked comfortable on his last Drive they sure did it looked like they started to find some momentum so now it's on this defense to stop that all right you're a little bit upset based on what what just happened the previous drive you've got to Bow up again and go back to what was working earlier in this game now it's first and 10 from the 46 yd line first for the off they'll go back to the ground and they'll bring him down after a short pick up and the defense doing a great job committing to the run when you commit to the run like this obviously you can give up some plays in the passing game but you got to stop the run first [Applause] what a Nifty run there to pick up the first down great job by the quarterback the running back in the offensive line really selling pass that's step one if you're going to run an effective draw it's got to look like pass and then boom you sneak it right to the running back gets a big game and gets a first down 42 spot reload alert it's a draw and a good solid pick up there before the defense knocks him down yeah this coaching staff they're getting this offensive line lathered up and into a rhythm now they're letting him drive off the ball on first down on these running plays and they're getting chunks of yardage when they've got him looking run now to pass and the defense makes the immediate tackle but he has enough for the first down it's definitely the wide receiver's job to create space right so whether you're running a go or you're running a hitch like this right here I got to find a way to push off legally or just create a little bit of space to get some positive Gage knocked off his feet but not before he picked up six yards down to the [Applause] 10 gets it out quickly he's there to make the Stop and they threw it in reverse losing yardage on that play boy they'd love to move the sticks here and take a shot at it on first and goal to the air it's Danier lets it go to the end zone and he's got it touchdown New Mexico touchdown new mexo and this quarterback really does a great job of seeing the defense seeing what kind of coverage they're in and I think when this offense goes empty and they spread the defense out it just makes it so much more simple for the QB to see what the defense is doing pre- snap and then post Snap you could tell he's playing in a great Rhythm right now because he's seeing the field and these empty sets are really helping him now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic extra point splits the upright and for a quick update let's go to Kevin Connor's in the studio two very different emotions inside the locker rooms of these teams who did battle today 27 Florida managed to avoid being gator bait by scratching and blowing their way to a narrow Victory this wasn't the blowout some had hoped for but it sure beats the alternative it's one game you don't want to react too much either way but I think both teams will leave this one with some things to work on moving forward and Kevin Conor is keeping an eye on everything all over the country sounds like they had a good one there knocked down after picking up five out to the 24 listen defense is about energy it's about passion it's about physicality they need a little bit more of that get the guy in the ground you can't let guys break tackles what could have been set up in a long yard situation now it becomes an easier situation because you couldn't get him on the ground that one could really put this drive into high gear as they have a first down at the 37 it's so important this offense is able to get this guy the ball in space especially in the perimeter of the field and I love that last play call because he's able to get outside and use his speed to me that's where this guy is his most dangerous he's right out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down that was just a perfectly choreographed screen the line got out on time the running back had a wall in front of it and I think the quarterback did a really good job of selling pass then kind of dodging the pass rush getting it to the running back and then let him do the rest you got him in space he'll pick up yards in a hurry picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down the give from the gun they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one as they get set to snap at time winding down here in the quarter to throw it's faf and he's all bottled up and now it's worse the ball's loose how about that alert play from the defense to scoop it up and they'll get him down after a solid return if you like old school running games this has been the game for you and a couple of guys who starred through the first three periods [Music] 2 as we start the fourth for e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e a pretty size the will comeback to win this one back at it to open the quarter with this first down play jackit looking to move it through the air here he goes breaking the pocket and he can't find a receiver and down he goes this offense is going to have to come up with a plan to block this guy he is an absolute monster and he showed you all his tools on that [Music] sack the now the offense has to overcome the negative play after the defense comes up with a sack on second down he'll let it fly they've got the screen set up they bring him down but a solid pick up to put them in position to pick up a first down and defensively this is exactly what you want right you got the big lead so you can play Big Zone coverages just keep the ball in front of you keep your eye on the quarterback rally to the football gang tackle you're going to win this game and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down brings up down in the fourth quarter it's too late for empty possessions they'll go for it on fourth down he'll try to throw and pick up the first down deep shot for the end zone and he going to be batted down they'll turn it over on down tell you what it gets late in the football game and I got to start being aggressive when when I'm in a hole and the clock's running out like it's going to make me have to throw the football be more aggressive and this offense doesn't come through for their team and now they're going to really need their defense to get some stops here in this football game in the fourth quarter he's up to 107 yards on the day and the defense has been getting a steady diet of this dude on opening day good spot after that seven yd pickup on first down it's second and three fast motion from the offense quarterback Quick Pass pass to the receiver he's loose and there they go again another huge gain on the ground this defense really needs to be careful and they have to play with great eye discipline understanding where the football is at all times moving forward they have got to know if this guy has the ball cuz he is dangerous in space this offense always looking for those big explosive plays and now they've got it just inside the 30 the after picking up a couple at second and eight they'll go to the ground works his way ahead for about three yds stopped at the 23 third headed to the line at the 23 trying to convert this third and short SP looking downfield it's faf he's right on Target and fired the completion there in the red zone and set up at the 13 defense just hasn't had an answer for this guy he has been on point this is about as good as I've seen him play at the quarterback position and here in the fourth quarter with a big lead he's still taking shots looking for room it's Conley they'll give him four yards on the carry it's down at the 8 yd line Y operating in the Red Zone here on second Down Easy they're looking for an advantage in the running game to the right he bullies his way all the way down to the 5 yd line they'd love to pick up this third down and get a fresh set with first and goal they're going to try to throw for it on third down grab near the marker it's McMillan touchdown wild cats and the Ping has started well I think this home environment was just too much for their opponents to handle there's been unbelievable noise and energy the crowd showed up today but how about the playmaking on the field these guys have got dudes all over the field and this kind of win week one sends a statement and reverberates all across college [Applause] football he try to add another to their lead exra point and with the extra point they pushed the lead out a little further a 69 yd touchdown drive and the score comes on a 5yd touchdown pass kickoff team is on the field they'll try to drive this one deep kick off he thought about bringing that out for a half second but he'll take a knee and they'll bring it to the 25 let's see what the Lobos offense has dialed up this time at Fourth Down gamble didn't pay off on the last drive and it led to giving up a scoring Drive David yeah and everybody wants to go for it unfortunately everybody wants that but your defense sometimes has to bail out your decision making we decided to go for it we didn't get it the defense Jesse didn't come up big and proved me right yeah not complimentary football no doubt but look this offense has been in these situations before so you got to come back out here take the field it's a fresh set of downs brand new Drive let's go out and execute with some points on the board second down coming up to the air it's Danier oh so close to paying off the tip drill had it in his hands but it falls incomplete couldn't pick it up on second down now they need to couple on third down looking to throw for it nice defensive play to get a hand in there and knock it away at this point of the game in the fourth quarter it is going to be tough for this offense to get some completions here because now trailing by this much the defense is expecting pass and they're putting a whole bunch of extra DBS on the field to help them out in coverage try to get it on the ground good pick up there they'll move the change in their set up at the 41 and I think that's a good call offensively re sort of been no man's land at Midfield you've got fourth down and you believe in your guys to go and get it done on the ground and they're able to pick up the first well you'd all surprised by the decision to run it there no not with their personnel up front just fires into traffic pick off and he's brought down and this defense gets the ball backto nice job by this defense that might be the exclamation for fourth quarter I got to lead you bring on the nickel defense you know they're passing the football for plays just like that to make the int that almost took this one [Music] away Arizona has it back the offense coming out to Bear Down the give to the tailback he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple nice job by this defense listen you got to understand they're going to run the football they're going to try to milk the clock Jesse they got the huge lead haven't been a lot of good plays for this defense in this game so far so can they build on that one can they create some turn and the ball is intercepted didn't get a ton on the return but the most important thing he got the ball and they've got it at the 48 obviously this game hasn't gone the way they would have liked but coaches are always looking for positive moments and things that you can build on how about that young man going out getting an interception yeah they're being blown out they're probably not going to win this football game but that is the type of play that as a coaching staff you can build on for next week's game trying to find his man on first down and it's in complete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball after misfiring it's second [Applause] down back to pass it's Danier flips it out in the flat One Step WRA Two Step squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground third down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off quarterback adapting he's brought down but not before they pick up the big first down well he does a really nice job buying time and I love the awareness there understanding no one's open downfield knowing where the sticks are and he's able to use his athleticism to get that first down oh he had him right down the middle and it just squirted right through his fingers and they missed an opportunity for a nice play on first down they'll line up for a second down play after the incompletion they go back up top grabbed in the back field it's Henry and they pick up just a few on that completion well and here's the problem offensively because you're trailing by so much so late in the game the defense now is going to be playing big Zone coverages and they're going to allow you to throw the ball underneath in the middle of the field rally to make a t nowhere to go with the ball and down he goes at the 39 you got to love a defense that just is flying around and having fun that's what these guys look like right all game long everything has gone their way and here we are early in the fourth quarter and they are still bringing their aame getting a sack on that last [Applause] one coach has no choice here the offense has to stay on the field down multiple possessions this late fourth down attempt coming he'll try to throw and pick up the first down and it's incomplete and this defense makes a fourth down stop the offense lining up for a first down [Applause] play one man in the back field and he gets it not a whole lot of room there three yards maybe second and seven it's just so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive plays positive yards hand the football off set up a good second down wide receiver shows motion touch pass on the Jet Sweep tackled after picking up the first down just went with something very easy very reliable Flip It Forward let your receiver do the rest I only got to get a few yards nice job nice execution first down he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple well there's a statement by the defensive line first down play expecting run and they just just dominated up front beat their one-on ones and force a tackle for a loss now the toss and he is run out of bounds as they go backwards there and just avoided the contact man I want my running backs to pick those holes and get downhill but there was no holes so I just think he did the smart thing and stretched it out and ran out of bounds in this case discretion was the better part of valor it is often underrated to know when the journey is over no one to hold no one well in that down in distance you're probably expecting them to throw it way down the field to get the first instead they go push past they did catch the defense off guard and even though that was a big explosive play David they still didn't have enough yards to get it well and catch me off guard is relative that's what you would say the offensive player I would say listen we're playing a little bit deeper because we're not going to give up the first down we react to the short stuff and obviously that's a quick easy pass from the offense rally up make the play Live to fight another down and the wild cat are flying down the field they'll give it to Johnson and he finds Some solid space makes a nice game before the defense is able to stop him yeah and that's a great job by this offense and I tell you what fourth quarter you have the lead that's exactly what you want to do lean on these guys run the football eat that clock wide receiver coming across in motion try to get the edge with a quick touch pass dragged down to the turf but not before getting the first down and the wild cats come to the line with a new set of down looking to go up top on first down quickly complete he's there to make the stop but the damage has been done as they pick up the first down on the throwing catch Arizona will try to pay off this Red Zone trip 29 Phil 29 [Applause] Philly the give on the inside pick up of one it's down at the 11 man that D tackle is a freak athlete did you see him come out of his stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness leaves it with the back keeps those legs churning for three yards he's down at the nine not nor really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal on third down he'll try to pick it up through the air touchdown wild cats and the punishment has been extended and add it on again this offense has done whatever they want however they want and this lead has ballooned when you start a season off you want to build both momentum you want to defeat an opponent and beat him badly that's exactly what they've done this team looks ready to compete for a national [Music] [Applause] championship lining up to tack one more onto that lead and no gold star for making it a trick shot but he bounced it off the left upright and got the bat let's go to the studio now and check with Kevin Connor Kevin what do you got guys right back to your game after we update the nation on this one Kansas State looked like a serious force in what can only be described as a dominant win this is a program that's won before and they might just add some more Hardware before this year is out a lot to go through in the film session this week for both teams but boy it sure is going to be easier for the side that came away with the win Kevin thanks a lot for that one sound as if they had a good one there oh did he find a hole in the defense and they'll finally catch up to him but not before a big chunk of yardage just picked up I do not know what happened on that play but they did forget to cover the big fella so I might continue to find the big fellow he might have some kind of cloaking mechanism I I don't know what it is but they didn't want to cover it back to throw it's dampier quarterback strolling away from heat short gain on the play before he slides well you're making a positive out of a negative and that time quarterback nice job buying time he's trying to throw the football downfield nothing there so instead of throwing it away getting the incomplete just get what you can get and make this next down more manageable looking to throw on second down and he's picked off again his night vision hasn't been up to speed his third interception and they'll close in on him after a good return on the interception he up in pass rushers bringing them DBS that's what I'm doing in this situation when I got to lead by a couple scores late in the ball game in the fourth quarter I'm going to rush the passer like crazy I'm going to put all those DBS back playing the pass that's what happened great job understanding they're going to have to take shots we get the interception this one's almost over Arizona sending the offense onto the field from the gun the ground game they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 crying play action rifles it down the middle fires it into a crowd and it's picked off and they'll drag him down after a good return on the interception a veteran in this defense stayed locked in on his rules and made the interception now Never Say Die attitude and I love that especially in these young players cuz they're out there competing and I know the scoreboard right now doesn't look pretty they're not going to come back and win this football game but I just love kids that are competing until there's zeros on the clock let's see what the Lobos offense has in store one of the most valuable things a quarterback can have David shortterm memory just forget that last pick you're dang right clear the mechanism it's over move it behind some players can't do that real well and it leads to more mistakes Jesse you got to just forget about it and move along and I think the coaching staff can help him too David I think you can get the running game going here and also give him some easy throws and the incompletion brings up a second down for this offense looking to throw it's dampier fires to the right just masterful working that side Seline and getting the toe down for the catch they've got it at the 37 it's first and 10 off he wants to throw and the timing just a hair off well this guy must feel like he's run into a buz saww in this game he has been under duress all game long that's a big reason why he's thrown multiple interceptions in the game too nothing coming easy to him it's hard to see the field when your internal clock is going off so fast because of the pressure of this defense and that's why they find themselves down by so much here in the fourth looking to throw it again that's caught it's Miller and he's brought down after a nice game and man this quarterback has had a day with that pass he goes over 300 yards on the day really nice job executing putting up some yards today pretty good day for the young man throws to the wide out got his man to the left offense on the move a big play there gets it to the 30 these wide receivers are so athletic out wide now you're so worried about getting beat deep and these slant routes they can be a good change up I mean just couple steps stick your foot in the ground come inside it might not be huge gains all the time but man it keeps that DB off and this quarterback is living dangerously right now obviously he threw a pick on the last Drive he's trying to complete that throw but the defender gets a hand on it tips it up in the air that's oh no that is an oh no situation they're lucky that one hit the ground really nice job there by both guys the throw and the catch to work that defense and get the first down that's first the the RPO fire complete to the left they get it down to the seven on that pass play in Prime position for a score going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down snags it goes out of bounds but they'll be set up with a first and goal the offense threatening close to the end zone now with a new set of downs looking to throw it's Dan and makes the grab in the end zone touchdown Lobo in a lot of losses you just want to burn the tape you don't want to watch it but I think there are some things that they can take into next week from this performance no doubt offense is about finding your Rhythm finding your groove what you do well and you can tell at least now starting to get a little something something going that maybe you can build on on to attempt the try kicker is on for the extra point right down the boulevard so it's a 77 yd touchdown drive and they cap the drive with a 4y touchdown pass the kickoff team out there and ready to go number set to kick it [Music] away and he'll just take a knee and this drive will start at the 25 Arizona has it back the offense coming out to Bear Down mistakes are going to happen as they did on that that last drive now how will they respond Jesse and this is the kind of guy who's going to take full accountability that was my bad that's on me I'm about to lead this offense now down the field to score some points dang I wish I would have played with you I didn't play with many quarterbacks that were just like yeah my bad hey guys I got this sorry about that it was more you should have ran a better route motion from the offense quick pass on the jet motion a strong tackle and wrap up from the Junior a third down try for the [Applause] offense they'll run it to keep the clock moving the Wildcats have a first down and I don't care if I get him by two by 20 by 30 by 40 I I just I just want to get the first down understanding the situation understanding where the sticks are doesn't have to be sexy but I got to make sure I get to that stick get to the first down Mark and a pickup of eight opens a world of opportunities on second and two and how good does that feel right you've got the lead in the fourth quarter the defense knows you're going to try to run the ball to ice the game and you rip off an8 yd run they know it's coming and they still can't stop they get him on the ground but it's a first down I love when players understand understand situations and they understand where the first down marker is and they understand where I got to get to a lot of people you'll see run north south and try to bounce out wide and make big plays sometimes it's not about making big plays sometimes it's about getting that first down to make sure I get an extra set of downs instead of trying to make those big touchdown runs after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven easy on the run it's Conley and he'll run across the sidelines after the good game listen you you got to be able to know what play to call and what hole to go through like the line blocks for a certain hole good job getting through the hole getting what was blocked getting a nice positive gain making your situation really good on the next down it's third down now and they ought to be able to get off one more play before the two-minute warning to the ground to try to move the chains now with a great opportunity as they pick up the first down they got it at the 40 we reach the two-minute warning and this offense is that much closer to salting away a victory Arizona comes out with another first down wide receiver now comes in motion the give to the back able to scr three yards out of that one somehow it's second and seven and the defense is still fighting they they haven't had the day that they dreamed of you know talking to the coaches coming in the game like they thought they had a good plan they'd be ready to attack and and and limit some of the damage this offense has done they haven't done it today though they got to go back to the drawing board figure some things out cuz this wasn't a great day defense has to be frustrated the offense keeps matriculating and matriculating and matriculating the ball down the field from the gun they'll try to impose their running game and they're able to get a third down stop here see if they go for it on Fourth and I'm a fan of this man run the football eat the clock we got the lead this offense has put together a nice day man like just balance rhythm timing play calling everything is worked that's why they built this lead they've had a great day today that is no good well they missed the field goal that's about the only thing that hasn't gone their way in this2 now New Mexico will go back to work on offense not a lot to feel great about in this one Jesse but I'm sure they'll try to seek out some positive well this might be an opportunity to Rees to go back when they watch this game and just find the plays in the teams that were working they weren't a lot obviously David but maybe an opportunity for the coaching staff to condense The Playbook a little bit I was going to say there's not a lot of good to go back that' be a quick film session because there was more negatives than positives but when you look at this this week you got a week to figure it out figure out what your offense is going to be moving forward that completion leaves us with second and medium looking for a man it's Danier unloads to the wide out reacted well to the tip but just couldn't squeeze the football instead of the turnover it'll be third down and now this offense will try to figure out a way to move the chains after that second down incompletion and they'll miss the connection here on third down Andy this defense has put a game together it is hard to put all the facets of Defense together run defense pass defense they've been so good man dialed in you could tell they were ready they were fast they were physical they dominated this football game and that decision will be questioned for a while the offense set for a first down play one running back in the back field and he has it breaks the tackle and he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that one and there's nothing more frustrating than when you get late in the game and you know they're running the football and you don't stop them it's been that kind of day for this defense they haven't played well they're going to have to go to the well they're going to have to figure some things out out practice this week I can promise you will not be a lot of fun with these coaches let's see what they do on third down they'll run the option nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry on the offense facing fourth down number 98 on to HT away they get a big win here and start the season on a positive no you got to love that as the players you come out you have so much anticipation coming into the season finally getting ready to play in front of a live audience you're able to come out and execute and get this win under your belt David couldn't be a better way to start the year and for the losing team obviously it's a little bit different you have something to look at now to analyze where do I need to get a little bit better but plenty of time still left in the season to improve and turn it around that's going to do it
