content Columbus Blue Jacket star Johnny goldrow and his brother Matthew tragically passed away on Thursday night after being hit by a car while cycling as reported by the New Jersey State Police Johnny goodro was 31 years old and Matthew goodro was 29 according to police reports the goodro brothers were struck by an SUV while the driver was attempting to pass another vehicle on the right that had moved over to give the cyclist's room the driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide the accident occurred at 8:19 p.m. in oldman's Township New Jersey and both godr sustained fatal injuries at the scene Johnny played the game with great joy which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice the blue jacket said in a statement he brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets he thrilled fans in a way only Johnny hockey could the impact he had on our organization and our sport was profound but pales in comparison to the indelible impression he made on everyone who knew him the Blue Jackets describe the deaths of Johnny and Matthew godo as an unimaginable tragedy the National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny gdo and his brother Matthew said NHL commissioner Gary bman while Johnny's infectious spirit for the game and showstopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname Johnny hackey he was more than just a dazzling hockey player he was a devoted father and beloved husband son brother and teammate who endeared himself to everyone he met originally from South Jersey Johnny and Matthew Gordo were in the area to serve as groomsmen for their sister's wedding scheduled to take place in Philadelphia on Friday Matthew godo like his brother Johnny Played Collegiate hockey at Boston College and went on to play for several AHL and ECHL teams Johnny goddo was selected by the Calgary Flames in the fourth round of the 2011 NHL draft after a standout career at Boston College where he won the Hobie Baker award as the nation's top college player he spent the first nine seasons of his NHL career with the Flames amassing 609 points 210 goals 399 assists named to the NHL's all rookie team in 2015 he posted a career high 115 points during the 2021-22 season before signing with the Blue Jackets the alleged drunk driver who fatally plowed into NHL star Johnny godo and his younger brother as they were biking in Southern New Jersey Thursday night appeared to sigh with exasperation when he learned he would be held in jail through next week John Higgins 43 who is charged in the deaths of godo 31 and his younger brother Matthew 29 made his first appearance Friday afternoon in Salem County Court where he was ordered to be held Behind Bars until his next detention hearing on September 5th 2024 so I'm here until Thursday Higgins asked judge Michael J syano at 1 point during the proceedings take a look at Sean Higgins court appearance be killed uh you're charged now with two counts of second degree vehicular homicide both of those charges are punishable by a maximum 10 years in New Jersey state prison you understand that those are the charges to bring you before this court and those are the potential penalties that you face yes sir are at today's hearing you do have certain rights among those rights are the right to be present you are in fact present here today in the virtual courtroom you also have a right to be represented by an attorney and today you're represented by Mr dly you additionally have a right to remain silent keep in mind anything you say here today may be used against you note that while Mr dly is your attorney for today's proceeding he may or may not be the attorney assigned to represent you your case proceeds through the court system if you're ultimately still represented by the public defender's office have you given any any thought at all at this time as to whether you want to continue to be represented by the public defender office or whether you'll be hiring your own attorney I will be hiring my attorney in the future here are all right you may do so if you do hire your own attorney here or she will have to enter their appearance with the court and substitute in for the public defender they will know how to do that in the meantime with regard to the charges pending against you you have a right to apply to certain programs court has to offer such as the recovery Court program Andor the pre-trial Intervention Program if you're interested and or otherwise eligible for either of those programs you may make an application with the assistance of your attorney you furthermore have a right to a hearing as the probable cause you have a right to have this matter presented to the Grand Jury for indictment as well as a trial by jury you may wave your grand jury presentment rights as well as your jury trial rights if you wave to if you wave your right to trial by jury You' then be Tried by the court in that instance a judge such as myself make a determination as to whether you're guilty or not guilty of these charges do you understand all these rights uh yes sir you also have a right to pre-trial release you may not be detained pre trial unless the state files a motion for your pre trial detention and a superior court judge orders that detention Miss Harley it's my understanding state is seeking pre- detention uh yes that is correct and with the holiday I believe that takes us to uh next Thursday September 5th for the detention hearing that is correct so Mr um Higgins your detention hearing is going to come back before this court on September the 5th be brought back to court for a hearing on that day in the meantime between now and your court date on Thursday the state must turn over to your attorney Discovery that's handing on reports or documents in the state's possession which are relevant to the application to detain you as well as any all exculpatory evidence must be turned over to your attorney between now and the hearing on the 5th now allow your attorney Mr duly who's in for purposes of today's proceeding just to advise you what to expect between now and Thursday SC Mr yes your honor um mrin obviously as earlier you stated that you get attorney as for now until you get a prop attorney we'll be representing you your DET heing now there's a couple things you need to know one uh first off don't talk to any about the jail by your case it's important toity between you and your with regardless with me going forward keep in mind all jail calls are recorded So when we talking on the phone jail just keep that in mind I wouldn't talk about the case anyone that isn't returning additionally best see you prior to your cour date on Thursday to uh basically get background information information that may be helpful for your ditioning um and we'll also waiting whether or not you get again if not we you to the okay thank you so when I actually do hire attorney or G attorney obviously I have very limited contact with anyone now I don't have a phone I can't really reach anybody who do I how do I get that started with them so Mr Higgins if you're interested in hiring Council you need to speak to somebody at the jail uh and they can help you facil contacting people uh if you have family or friends on the outside or want to assist you in doing that you may be able to reach out to them in order to get that done okay at this time we're EXC today we'll see you back in court on Thursday so I'm here until Thursday yes sir once the state files a motion for pre trial detention statutes and court rules require me to hold you over for minimum 72 hours before your hearing of course we have a weekend and we have a Monday holiday 72 hours becomes Thursday any
