Intro Taylor Shire joins us from the Regina Leader Post he covers the saskat and R riders in a variety of South Sports Taylor thanks for jumping in here today before we get to the week 10 match Riders at red blacks can I just ask you out of fun curiosity what's your Olympic experience but like are you in are you out and if you're in what are you watching what is it my Olympic experience I don't have any um I don't know what sport I would compete in either uh I I'm casually observing uh most of the sports I guess paying close attention to some of the Saskatchewan Sports um and the athletes I guess competing would be would be my answer to that uh I like it I like watching I love that it's during the daytime and it can just be on um it could sort of be that background and then you can pay attention to the to the big events when they come up so I don't mind the time difference right now because it gives me something to watch during the day when I'm not at the rider practice highly uh interesting answer you're right I don't really care for the it being on in the morning but it is what it is what what I've heard a lot from people is that the LA games in 2028 will be even better because of the timing and some new sports like baseball and flag football and so forth but anyways thanks for the answer there's no wrong answer to this so how do you feel Harris Status the announcement that Trevor Harris has been ruled out for Thursday's Rider game at Ottawa will affect the game or are they just used to not having him do you think there just used to not having him and I think this was the timeline all along um if you would ask me three weeks ago when Harris was sort of seen on the field at practice not fully practicing but throwing the ball progressing well as coach May said I would have circled the Montreal game next week for his potential return not this Ottawa game so I'm not surprised that he's not back for Ottawa on a short week for sure you don't want to give a you know a quarterback coming back from injury you know one practice and about a half of a walk through to come get his reps um and then also the salary cap and financial part of it where now Trevor is going to last the full six games on the injured list and likely be taken off next week for that game against Montreal so there's no salary Camp implications of pulling a guy off early um I would say you know on the flip side when Harris is fully healthy he should be the starting quarterback I think he is fully healthy but it's one of those things where it is a short week you might as well keep him on there for the full six games because of the short week week and it's a long season and and I think that was one of the things that mace Cory ma used last week he's talked about the totality of the Season how do you look at the season as a whole is this a must-win game in Ottawa no so do they need to pull Trevor Harris no let him go on the full six games and and bring him back next week thank you for the update and we live in a time like I try to take what I hear literally and I am repeatedly disappointed I shouldn't do that I mean they said that they I thought they'd said earlier when this injury happened Was it a ruse that he wasn't going to stay the full six games did the rehab not go according to plan or was that just a rul to keep people help uh hopeful it was a bit of a ruse because I I think he could have played if it was a must win scenario and if they didn't have anybody behind him um if it was a playoff type situation where they had to win or they're coming down the stretch he would have probably in my opinion got pressed into action earlier say after three four games but again mace used the word a few times the totality of the season so that to me means don't rush him back let him recover let him be 100% for two weeks before he returns um and on the flip side they also want to see what they have with Shay Patterson so giving him valuable reps Patterson hasn't lost them games hasn't uh hasn't necessarily won them many games either just by his play alone it's been a full team effort when they've been able to win but this is a good chance for SK to see what Shay Patterson is is Patterson going to be around next year if Harris isn't like there there's a whole bunch of things when you think about down the road allowing Patterson to get these valuable reps and valuable playing time could pay off when the Riders have a few decisions to make when it comes to the quarterback situation in the offseason okay From the Rough Rider that's the account watching on YouTube says should the Riders be worried right now I personally don't think they should Is it time to panic you feel it though don't you Taylor you're from Sask you sense it the fans are just they're ready to get real worried what do you think how do you answer that yeah the sky's not falling mace used that again this week um and it's it's not time to panic it's not time to to you know think about there's been nobody saying let's fire the head coach and that's usually what happens in this in stretches around saskatch and when it's a two- game losing streak or or you've lost three or four a lot of people say oh we need changes we need we need to fire people we need to put this person in this person out it's really just getting healthy and they're hit by the injury bug again this week yes Harris is going to come back next week but jir Thurman just got placed on the six game injured list the middle linebacker that's a big loss they're down to their fourth string right tackle this week uh Nick Jones is going to come on and make his first CFL start so when you think about some of the injuries um they're never excuses you always have to have that next man up mentality and and and you know it's up to Jeremy OD day and Company to find that next player whatever it might be it's crazy to think that they're already at their fourth string right tackle and nobody really knew who Nick Jones was uh I don't like the Riders obviously had him on the list somewhere but he wasn't in Camp and just showed up a couple weeks ago and now he's he's pressed into action so um not time to panic quite yet going to be a tough test in Ottawa on Thursday and then I feel like they'll have a bit of a regroup reset hopefully get a little bit healthier next week when they have Montreal coming to town I've become something of a headline reer when it comes to CFL news and Rider Nick Dy and Brandon Council retire headlines I read the headlines I don't always click on the story busy doing baseball hosting the show blah blah blah I see offensive lineman Brandon Council retired Suddenly I See defensive lineman Nick Dy a Reina kid retired suddenly what's the story behind these that you can tell us uh Nick Dy haven't uh haven't spoken to him yet I was going to reach out to him um he's been sort of nicked up a little bit in the last few weeks to start the season uh I I don't know the reason for his retirement so I can't speak to that but I was planning on reaching out to him and and and getting an update from him just hasn't really had consistent playing time maybe had opportunities outside of the game um and for Brandon Council on the suspended list to start the season because he had a job at Auburn this offseason that he landed Council obviously played a lot last season landed a job this offseason to Auburn and then all of a sudden Saskatchewan has a bunch of injuries so they call Brandon Council and say hey you want to come play so he comes shows up practices for a couple weeks then he's pressed into action when when Jacob Brammer goes down plays one game retires a couple of days later I think again I haven't talk to him but I think it's one of those situation where he comes in and he says yeah you know what this isn't worth it or I'm not into it anymore my body hurts way too much after that I have a cushy job at Auburn where he where he played college football went back to his uh his full-time day job and and left football at least his playing days uh behind so that to me was uh a little bit surprising because you know you bring this guy he leaves his job but his job was waiting for him when he got when he returned so uh maybe just not as into it as he was last year and there Reas didn't mean to ask Canadiens 6th in Canada you that I was just curious NHL network has the Montreal Canadians as the sixth ranked team in Canada Calgary 7th you the one of the biggest Hab fans I know Tom Shepard's bigger literally and figuratively but how do you feel about Montreal being sixth in NHL Network's rankings in Canada probably accurate um again I think I spoke it a couple months ago with you this will be a a growing season for them it'll be a season where they're going to keep building and then maybe two years from now three years they'll be a contender so still a growing season I like that they don't have a a lot of expectations on them with the with that young core um so the expectations are low meaning they can they can play I mean you never really can play stressfree in Montreal there's always a eyeballs and people pointing fingers at you but I feel like the expectations are lower for them this year um in Montreal which would be a good thing because the these they have a bunch of young players that can continue to develop so I think they won't be at the end of the season they won't be the sixth ranked team in Canada I think they'll be higher than that good stuff fun to watch Taylor thanks for jumping in man enjoying your coverage uh enjoy the games this weekend awesome thanks for the chat The Leader Post Taylor shy [Music] he
