scene the following night the Riddler kills commissioner Pete Savage and leaves another message for Batman Batman and Gordon discover that the Riddler left a thumb drive in Mitchell's car containing images of Mitchell's affair with a woman anakah COV at the Iceberg Lounge a nightclub operated by Oswald The Penguin cobblepot who is Crime Boss Carmine Falcon's Lieutenant while the penguin pleads ignorance Batman notices that anak's roommate Selena Kyle works at the club as a waitress when anakah disappears Batman sends Selena to the Iceberg Lounge for answers and discovers that Savage Mitchell and the district attorney Gil Coulson are on Falcone's payroll The Riddler of ducks Coulson straps a timed collar bomb to his neck and sends him to interrupt Mitchell's funeral when Batman arrives The Riddler calls him via coulson's phone and threatens to detonate the bomb if Coulson cannot answer three riddles Coulson refuses to answer the third the name of the informant who gave the rol the bombs destroy the seaw wall around Gotham and flood the city nason's followers attempt to kill riol but Batman and Selena managed to stop them in the aftermath nashton befriends another inmate a while Selena deems Gotham Beyond saving and leaves Batman AIDS recovery efforts and vows to inspire hope in Gotham Matt Reeves the Batman isn't a superhero movie not really all the trappings are there the Batmobile the rugged suit the gadgets courtesy of trusty Butler Alfred and of course at the center is the Caped Crusader himself brooding tormented seeking his own brand of nighttime Justice in a Gotham City that's spiraling into squalor and Decay but in Reeves confident hands everything is breathtakingly alive and new as director and co-writer he's taken what might seem like a familiar tale and made it epic even operatic his Batman is more Ain to a gritty 70s crime drama than a soaring and transporting Blockbuster with its kinetic unpredictable action it calls to mind films like the Warriors as well as one of the greatest of them all in the genre The French Connection and with a series of high-profile murders driving the plot it sometimes feels as if the Zodiac Killer is terrorizing the citizens of Gotham and yet despite these touchstones this is unmistakably a Matt Reeves film he accomplishes here what he did with his gripping entries in the Planet of the Apes franchise created an electrifying entertaining spectacle but one that's grounded in real emotional Stakes this is a Batman movie that's aware of its own place within pop culture but not in winking meta fashion rather it acknowledges the comic book characters lore only to examine it and reinvent it in a way that's both substantial and daring the script from Reeves and Peter Craig forces this hero to question his history as well as confront his purpose and in doing so creates an opening for us as viewers to challenge the narratives we cling to in our own lives and with Robert patson taking over the role of Bruce Wayne we have an actor who's not just prepared but hungry to explore this figure's weird dark instincts this is not the dashing air to a fortune prowling about kicking ass in a cool costume this is Travis ble in the bat suit detached and disillusioned he's two years into his tenure as Batman tracking criminals from on high in Wayne Tower an inspired switch from the usual sprawl of Wayne manner suggesting an even greater isolation from society they think I'm hiding in the shadows he intones in an opening voice over but I am the shadows in the harsh light of day Pattinson gives us hungover Indie Rockstar Vibes but at night you can see the rush he gets from swooping in and executing his version of Vengeance even beneath the tactical gear and I black as he's shown in pretty much every role he's taken since Twilight made him a global superstar in 28 working with singular URS from David Cronenberg to CLA Denny's to the safty brothers patson is at his best when he's playing characters who make you uncomfortable even more than Christian Bale in the role patson is so skilled at making his beautiful angular features seem unsettling so when he first spies on the impossibly sexy Zoe kravit as Selena Kyle slinking into her leather motorcycle gear and shim ing down the fire escape in her own pursuit of nocturnal Justice there's an unmistakable flicker of a charge in his eyes ooh she's a freak like me patternson and Kravitz have insane chemistry with each other she is his match physically and emotionally every step of the way this is no flirty purring Catwoman she's a fighter and a Survivor with a loyal heart and a strong sense of what's right following her lead role in Steven soderberg's high-tech Thriller Kimmy Kravitz continues to reveal a fierce Charisma and quiet strength she's part of a murderer row of supporting performers all of whom get meaty roles to play Jeffrey Wright is the rare voice of idealism and decency as the eventual Commissioner Gordon John Truro is low-key chilling as Crime Boss Carmine Falcone Andy ciry Caesar in Reeves Apes movies brings a paternal wisdom and warmth as Alfred Colin Ferell is completely unrecognizable as the sleazy villainous Oswald cobblepot better known as the Penguin and Paul Dono is Flatout Terri Ying as the Riddler whose own drive for vengeance provides the story spine he goes to extremes here in a way that's reminiscent of his startling work and There Will Be Blood his derangement is so intense you may find yourself unexpectedly laughing just to break the tension he creates but there's nothing amusing about his portrayal Dono makes you feel as if you're watching a man who's Truly Deeply Disturbed this is not to say that the Batman is a down or far from it despite the overlong running time of nearly 3 hours this is a film that's consistently viscerally gripping the coolest Batmobile yet a muscular vehicle that's straight out of Mad Max Fury Road figures prominently in one of the movie's most heart pounding sequences it's an elaborate car chase and Chain Reaction crash ending with an upside down shot of fiery Fury that literally had me applauding during my screening during a fight at a thumping nightclub punctuated by pulsating red lights you can feel every punch and kick that's one of the more compelling elements of seeing this superhero in his early days he is an invincible and a shootout in a pitch black hallway illuminated only by the blast of shotgun fire is both harrowing and dazzling greatly magnifying the power of scenes like these is the score from veteran composer Michael jaino best known for his Pixar movie music he does something totally different with the Batman percussive and Horn heavy it is massive and demanding and you will feel it deep in your core working with artists and Crafts People operating at the top of their game re has made a movie that manages to be ethereal yet weighty at the same time substantial yet impressionistic cinematographer Greg Fraser pulls off the same sort of stunning magic trick he did with his Oscar nominated work in Denny's villain's Dune through pouring rain and neon lights there's both a gauz and a heft to his imagery his use of Shadow and silhouette is masterful and does so much to convey a sense of forboding and tension I could write an entire separate essay on the film's many uses of the color red to Gest energy danger even hope and the costume design from the great Jacqueline Duran with Dave Crossman and Glenn Dylan designing patson's Rough and Tumble bat suit put just the right Finishing Touch on the film's cool edgy Vibe this is the most beautiful Batman movie you've ever seen even if it's not really a Batman movie at all where do you go after the Dark Knight Ben effel blew it and even Christopher Nolan who brought unprecedented levels of realism and gravitas to that franchise best Batman Saga couldn't improve on what he' created in his 2012 sequel so what is Cloverfield director Matt Reeves strategy answer go darker than the Dark Knight deadlier than no time to die and longer than Dune with a serious-minded Batman Standalone of his own leaning into those elements doesn't automatically mean audiences will Embrace Reeves Vision but this grounded frequently brutal and nearly 3-hour film Noir registers among the best of the genre even if or more aptly because what makes the film so great is its willingness to dismantle and interrogate the very concept of superheroes sure that's been done before who watches the Watchman Alan Moore memorably asked influencing Decades of spandex clad savior stories though Reeves does something relatively unique here at least by comic book movie standards he strips the genre of its Supernatural elements even more than the Nolan Trilogy did and introduces a more complex version of a classic Piro who's only a whisker's breath removed from the story's bad guy morally speaking whereas these movies are typically defined by their villains the Batman gets under your skin by asking what if the good guys aren't really the good guys what if the person we were counting on to protect us might actually be making the situation worse while Batman who's played here by gloomy Twilight star Robert patson representing the orphan character's tortured psychology to an almost painful degree focuses on punching out Petty thugs in shadowed alleys and on subway platforms The Riddler at genuinely disturbing Paul Dano emerges to expose dispose of the white collar Scoundrels embedded at the highest levels of power both men are Vigilantes though one is preoccupied with helping the police while the other targets the systemic corruption that undermines our faith in such institutions in Gotham City for sure but offscreen as well in ways far more unsettling than most audiences might expect the Batman channels the fears and frustrations of our current political climate presenting a mey full course crime Saga that blends elements of the classic gangster film with cuttingedge commentary about challenges facing the modern world it's a hugely ambitious undertaking and one that's strong enough to work even without Batman's presence not that it would have any reason to exist without him but by incorporating the character and so many of the franchises trademark Catwoman a slinky Zoe Kravitz the penguin Colin Ferell all but unrecognizable loyal Butler Alfred Andy ciris fully analog and an epic car chase involving the latest iteration of the Batmobile Reeves Electric iies the dense Ultra dark proceedings with an added level of excitement that justifies the film's relatively demanding running time from the beginning the director breaks from the stylistic influences of the genre establishing a tone that almost never feels derivative of other comic book movies that said one could certainly point to Jeff lobe and Tim sales killer serial the long Halloween as a common thematic influence between this and The Dark Knight that's where Crime Boss Carmine Falcone John Truro comes from though practical action sequences Hue closer to Korean films like old boy than Nolan's nvo 7s Style No More Lies reads the blood red indictment scrawled across the face of the Riddler's first victim no less a figure than Gotham's unsavory mayor Rupert penry Jones that's just one of several Grizzly murders perpetrated by this maniacal Avenger who's as twisted and self-righteous as that sicko from the Saw movies Edward nashton AK The Riddler wears greasy coke bottle glasses and what looks like a Lether another fetish Hood it turns out to be a winter combat mask live streaming his mind games on a message board for conspiracy crackpots but here's the twist there really is a conspiracy among Gotham's most powerful one that traces back to the Wayne family and it falls to Bruce to untangle it before it tears the city apart why him the Riddler has drawn Batman in leaving handmade cards loaded with ciphers and other puzzles at each of his crime scenes part of the film's reality is to avoid calling comic book characters by their traditional names you no doubt noticed the the in the title of the Batman and asked yourself what it's meant to signify in using the definite article Reeves isn't necessarily trying to say that he's created the definitive screen incarnation of the character if anything that tiny extra word casts an air of existential mystery around its Mast an anonymous hero who doesn't even know what to call himself early on when the imposing leader of a violent street gang taunts the hell are you supposed to be the bat clad vigilante grow back I'm Vengeance that's how Bruce Wayne thinks of himself when we first meet this version of the character no origin story but rather in media's Reed two years into defending Gotham from the brink of Anarchy ravaged by a major narcotics epidemic courtesy of a street drug called drops the city finds itself facing a level of disorder somewhere between a pre-julian Manhattan and the final minutes of Todd Phillips The Joker though the two films exist in different dimensions of the same Gotham Multiverse reuniting with production designer James chinland with whom he worked on the Planet of the Apes sequels Reeves presents the most robust version of Gotham we've seen since Tim Burton's 1989 Batman clearly modeled on New York City Amplified through set extensions and stunning CGI this CD Metropolis plunges us into The Big Apples rotten core the Midtown equivalent of Time Square is illuminated by even more giant digital screens a black cluster of buildings Looms where Lower Manhattan would be and you don't want to go anywhere near the Madison Square Garden like Arena where the finale takes place at times Batman surveys the city from an upper floor of a half-built skyscraper otherwise he zooms around at street level on his bat cycle eventually upgrading to a souped up muscle car the unveiling of which is one of the film's big Thrills except for hidden camera contact lenses his technology is mostly realistic and unless one counts a rooftop based jump he can't fly unlike so many DC Comic Book Heroes bman is neither a god nor an alien he has no Fantastical abilities Bruce Wayne's superpower is his billion dooll Fortune but the guy behind the mass breaks and bleeds just like anybody else a point Reeves reminds us of with a shot of patson's bare back covered in scars rather than leaning on a theme Michael Chino score surprises ranging from tense tribal drums to Nirvana to Opera while editors William Hoy and Tyler Nelson avoid obvious angles leaving quiet spaces for audiences to process and question what's happening as the Batman or Vengeance or whatever he's called patson is the most Sullen of the actors to have played the character which reads as a kind of Daredevil nihilism whenever he's in costume he doesn't seem Fearless so much as ambivalent about whether he lives or dies once the cowl comes off however patson's interpretation gets more intriguing brooding and withdrawn he's a damaged loner with unresolved daddy issues saddled with all kinds of complicated emotional trauma it's tough to see a hero hurting so much and yet his troubled past informs every relationship including the one with a lunatic who counts Bruce Wayne among his targets The Riddler schemes are genuinely scary far more than seems reasonable for a PG-13 rated movie like the remote controlled exploding collar clamped on Peter sarg guard's drugged out district attorney Gil Coulson the idea here is that some of Gotham's top ranking officials plus cat burglar come cocktail waitress Selena Kyle Kravitz are somehow mixed up with Falcone and The Riddler has taken it upon himself to purge the system of such elements the Chinatown intricate specifics of just how intertwined city government is with organized crime can make your head spin though Reeves lays it out relatively elegantly such that audiences can follow the many twists of Batman's investigation this is first and foremost a detective story unsentimental as they come one half expects Gwyneth Pal's head to show up in a box at some point and though the authorities take the rid into custody well before the end the movie's most shocking stretch is still to come just when Gotham seems ready to celebrate its next chapter it's hard to imagine how Reeves who was shooting the Batman during the early days of the pandemic could have anticipated the January 6th Capital Riot and yet the signs must have been there all along for the film's chilling climax hinges on activating susceptible citizens to conduct a mass terrorist attack in the Dark Knight Heath Ledger's Anarchist Joker felt like he'd stepped right out of your nightmares but there's something even more intimidating about the way the Riddler operates he literally triggers others to become Vigilantes as well and judging by the real world copycats previous Batman movies inspired such as the Aurora Colo shooting that could have consequences a movie like this will inspire countless debates does the Batman really need to be this dark can it hold a candle to Nolan's Trilogy there's room enough for both to exist and space for sequels to build on this Foundation which assumes a certain familiarity with the Char mythology that's the beauty of Batman who transcends all the other heroes in the DC Comics stable like Dracula or Hamlet this iconic anti-hero stands up to endless reinvention whether campy or pop self-questioning or complicit he tells us something new about ourselves every time he steps Out of the Shadows the Batman gross $369.00 million in the United States in Canada and $ 42.9 million in other territories for a when Batman takes his shirt off toward the beginning to the film he has a large scar on his shoulder the scar is gone later in the movie when he appears shirtless while laying out the clues he's gathered on the Riddler case during the wide shot of Gotham City Hall St George's Hall Liverpool 5753 you can see a bus stop in the bottom right of the frame this is a merca travel bus stop in Liverpool and being in the UK the bus stop is on the left hand side of the road road with the rectangle plate on top showing the buses that stop their facing the oncoming traffic when Brucey Batman first gets on his bike his hands are not wrapped but when he gets to Wayne Manor to review the night his hands are wrapped like a boxers when Selena Kyle is cracking the safe she is wearing gloves later on when she is back in her apartment with Batman the audience can see that her nails are longer which would not have been able to fit over the gloves in the finale Batman saves people in the Water by cutting the electric cable using the knife on his chest then Falls in water he gets out without the knife neither on his chest nor in his hand the next scene he meets Selena and The Knife is back on his chest the doctor tells Bruce that she's hoping the patient will stabilize if he is not stable he should be intubated and in an induced coma not just sedated with an oxygen mask on his face the moment when anaka coso's passport is shown on the screen a birth year is marked as 1998 but social security number starts with four 90 depicting that her year of birth is 1990 when gc1 news plays Riddler's latest video with a victim who has rats strapped to his chest it uses subtitles for Riddler's voice the subtitles misspell judgment as judgment which is incorrect in American English however the rule in English is that g can only be soft while preceding an e i or Y this anomaly is derived from a misspelling in an early dictionary and has been propagated ever since both spellings are acceptable slight as synchronized dialogue obviously dubbed in post-production when Gordon says you have any idea what kind of trouble you're in at 1125 in the Final Shots when Batman and Selena go their separate ways on the bikes as Selena drives under the arch towards the camera the UK road marking for giveway can clearly be seen on the left lane from Selena's point of view odd production didn't swap for American markings neither Batman supposedly the world's greatest detective nor the gcpd seem to try and search for Riddler's apartment despite the fact that the photos of the club are clearly taken from an elevated position rather than from the street the forensics officer taking photographs at the scene of the mayor's murder uses the flash when taking photographs for evidence even photos of reflective surfaces such as the framed newspaper Pages any experienced photographer would use the iso and aperture settings to take photographs without a flash which would eliminate flash Reflections and Whiting out of the area being photographed it is Halloween in Gotham City a man Paul Dono spies on the apartment of Mayor Don Mitchell Jr Rupert penry Jones the mayor watches a debate between himself and his opponent Beller Riel Jame Lawson who wants to stop the Gotham renewal program that Mitchell benefits from The massed Man known as The Riddler sneaks up on Mitchell and bludgeons him with a hammer until dead he then starts to wrap duct tape around Mitchell's head billionaire Bruce Wayne Robert patson narrates over how he has spent spent the last 2 years as Batman seeking out criminals in Gotham working with the police department he has gotten the bat signal as a means to warn Crooks that Batman is coming for them Bruce stalks a gang of thugs with clown makeup as they follow a man off the subway and harass him before they can beat him up Bruce steps out as Batman and begins to Pummel the thugs as he declares I'm Vengeance Batman joins Lieutenant James Gordon Jeffrey right at Mitchell's apartment to investigate his murder The Riddler left a card addressed for the Batman along with a card containing a riddle and a cipher what does a liar do when he's dead commissioner Pete Savage Alex ferns comes in to chew Gordon out for allowing Batman to be involved in the investigation even though Riddler intended for Batman to be there he determines that the answer to the riddle is he lies still Bruce returns to the Batcave and gets help from his Butler Alfred pennyworth Andy ciris in finding a code within the cipher that leads them to find the word Drive Batman goes with Gordon into Mitchell's garage to find a car that had been broken into and contains a flash drive along with Mitchell's severed thumb together they find incriminating photos of Mitchell with a woman named anakah Hanah hrzic outside a club called the Iceberg Lounge Batman goes to the Iceberg Lounge to speak to mobster Oswald cobblepot penguin Colin Ferell after being denied entry by the thugs at the door Batman fights his way through a slew of goons before meeting penguin directly he questions penguin about Mitchell and anakah but he claims to not know any anything Batman notes a young woman Selena Kyle Zoe Kravitz working at the club and obtaining a drug called drop to cell Bruce keeps an eye on Selena as she returns to her apartment that shares with anakah they watch news showing her in pics with Mitchell since they got leaked after Batman and Gordon open the files after anakah goes to bed Selena sneaks out as Catwoman and goes to Mitchell's apartment which is now a closed off crime scene Batman finds Selena trying to grab whatever info she can find on anakah they go back to her apartment and find it ransacked with anakah missing furthermore they see news saying that Riddler has killed Savage along with a viral video sent by Riddler saying that Mitchell and Savage were not good men as everyone had been led to believe he has Savage hooked to a device where two rats will gnaw at him to death Batman and Gordon look into Savage's death they find more incriminating photos this time showing Savage working with a drop dealer they find another message for Batman along with another and Cipher reading elada alada the winged rat The Riddler suggests that there is a rat among the group of people he is targeting Batman gets Selena to go into the 44 below the deeper more exclusive Club within Iceberg Lounge he gives her camera contact lenses to use so that he can see what she sees inside the place they find several City officials or guests with criminal ties including district attorney Gil Coulson Peters Source guard he talks about a rat within the department that is being protected while another woman there mentions anakah Selena follows her but doesn't learn anything more she ends up running into penguin as well as Crime Boss Carmine Falcone John churo who already knows Selena from previous encounters Selena takes off the contact lenses after telling Batman she cannot continue and then takes a cab Coulson goes back to his car and is attacked by Riddler who places a device around his neck Bruce attends Mitchell's funeral where he runs into penguin and Falcone the latter recognizes Bruce and notes that his father Thomas Luke Roberts saved his life after Falcone had been shot during the service coulson's car crashes into the church he emerges with a bomb around his neck a phone tape to his hand and another message for Batman he comes in and answers Riddler's call Riddler begins to set off the bomb and give Coulson riddles to solve to save his life Batman helps with the riddles but when Riddler tells Coulson to name the rat in the case against mobster Sal he chooses to to die alone because giving up the rat would cost his family's life Coulson blows up and Batman is knocked back unconscious by the explosion Batman wakes up in the police station and fights several officers Gordon cools him down and talks to him privately Batman notes to Gordon that one of the cops in the station Kenzie Peter McDonald was seen at 44 below Gordon helps Batman with a distraction by having him punch Gordon in the face before Batman uses his flight suit to escape he deploys his par parachute just before going under a bridge resulting in him Crash Landing Batman and Gordon believe penguin is the rat so they tail him to a drug deal Batman catches Catwoman on her own mission where she ends up discovering anak's body in the trunk of a car when she tries to go for penguin's money it leads to a shootout between his men against Batman and Gordon Batman hops in the Batmobile and chases after penguin through the streets penguin causes a major accident to shake Batman off but the Caped Crusade comes bursting out of the flames and causes penguin to crash his car Batman and Gordon interrogate him but penguin insists he is not the rat the two leave him handcuffed before driving off Batman receives a message from Riddler leading him and Gordon to the abandoned orphanage for their next Clues to Riddler's latest Target they find drop addicts as well as a projector that shows campaign footage of Thomas Wayne's run for mayor they realize that Bruce is the target he races back home trying to contact Alfred but their housekeeper Dory Sandra Dickinson informs Bruce that Alfred has been injured after another message for Batman exploded and sent Alfred to the hospital Batman meets with Selena and asks her about her connection to Falcone she admits that she is his biological daughter her mother Maria worked at the same club and was murdered and Falcone never assumed custody of her so she wants to steal from him and get what he owes her Batman and Selena also share a romantic moment and kiss a viral video from Riddler makes waves as it reveals that there is a dark history between the Wayne and Arkham families a reporter had been trying to do an expose on Martha Wayne Stella stalker over her years in and out of asylums while seeking psychiatric help allegedly Thomas had spoken to Falcone about handling the reporter and Falcone killed the man leading everyone to believe that Thomas put a hit out on the man Bruce goes to the club as himself to speak to Falcone and get answers straight Falcone acknowledges the news about the reporter but he merely tells Bruce that his his involvement in the case just before he killed her Selena kicks Kenzie over the ledge but Batman and Gordon catch him letting her get away Selena goes to the Iceberg Lounge to kill Falcone herself kills Falcone Batman looks up to find Riddler in his apartment Window the cops run up to the apartment but find it empty they then receive a tip from someone having seen Riddler go down the fire escape and sit in a diner the cops find and arrest him there without much of a fuss authorities learn that Riddler's real name is Edward nashton and that he is an accountant he is locked up at Arkham Asylum Batman goes to speak to Riddler who talks about how he envied Bruce Wayne for the attention he received since nashton was also an orphan who endured a less privileged childhood than Bruce did he believes Batman is on his side but Batman tells him otherwise Riddler alludes to one last plan he had that Batman failed to find out about Batman goes back to Riddler's apartment and works with another cop to find the password to an encrypted video it features Riddler addressing his followers and talking about his big plan to destroy the seaw walls around Gotham Harbor and flood the city on Election night where riol will be elected mayor he had also invited his many followers to join in the crime soon explosions are heard and the city quickly begins to fill with water authorities make attempts to gather people to Higher Ground since evacuation is impossible crowds gather at Gotham Square Garden but Riddler's followers show up armed and one of them shoots Ral in the arm but Gordon manages to protect her Batman comes in and fights the thugs while Selen shows up and helps the water hits the building and begins to flood the place Batman grabs a flare and begins leading people to Safety in the aftermath most of the city is underwater and criminals like penguin will engage in a power struggle Batman is viewed as a hero for his rescue efforts and he makes a personal vow to be better and less driven by Vengeance Riddler weeps as he sees the news over how his plan turned out but his cellmate Barry Kagen tells him to cheer up and offers to be his friend knowing they can put their talents to good use the inmate then starts to let out a familiar maniacal laugh Batman meets with Selena who is planning to drive Upstate and leave Gotham since she deems it Beyond saving the two-part weighs and ride their motorcycles away though Batman looks back at her one more time before returning home Bruce Wayne has spent two years as Batman acting mostly as a vigilante set on eliminating the worst of Gotham City's criminals a serial killer called The Riddler Target several noted officials including Mayor Don Mitchell Jr commissioner Pete Savage and district attorney Gil Coulson Batman works with Lieutenant Jim Gorden to find the connection between the victims and their ties to criminals Oswalt cobblepot the Penguin and Carmine Falcone Batman works with Selena kyak attack Riddler reveals that Bruce's mother Martha was being hounded by a journalist trying to expose her history of mental illness and Thomas had spoken to Falcone about handling it but Falcone killed the man and Thomas was believed to have put out a hit on the man leading to Bruce's trust in his father being broken but Alfred reassures Bruce that his father truly was a good man after learning that Falcone was an informant in the case against mobster Sal Batman and Gordon managed to have Falcone arrested but he is killed by Riddler he allows himself to be caught in a diner and Batman learns too late that Riddler's final plan involved flooding Gotham City by destroying the walls that surround Gotham Harbor Batman and Selena fight off Riddler supporters and lead people to safety Batman Begins to be viewed as a hero while Selena thinks Gotham is beyond saving and leaves meanwhile Riddler becomes friends with his cellmate a certain familiar clown Prince of Crime the Batman is a 2022 American destroy the seaw wall around Gotham and flood the city nason's followers attempt to kill riol but Batman and Selena managed to stop them in the aftermath nashton befriends another inmate a while Selena deems Gotham Beyond saving and leaves Batman AIDS recovery efforts and vows to inspire hope in Gotham Matt Reeves the Batman isn't a superhero movie not really all the trappings are there the Batmobile the rugged suit the gadgets courtesy of trusty Butler Alfred and of course at the center is the Caped Crusader himself brooding tormented seeking his own brand of nighttime Justice in a Gotham City that's spiraling into squalor and Decay but in Reeves confident hands everything is breathtakingly alive and new as director and co-writer he's taken what might seem like a familiar tale and made it epic even operatic his Batman is more akin to a gritty 70s crime drama than a soaring and transporting Blockbuster with its kinetic unpredictable action it calls to mind films like the Warriors as well as one of the greatest of them all in the genre The French Connection and with a series of high-profile murders driving the plot it sometimes feels as if the Zodiac Killer is terrorizing the citizens of Gotham and yet despite these touchstones this is unmistakably a Matt Reeves film he accomplishes here what he did with his gripping entries in the Planet of the Apes franchise created an electrifying entertaining spectacle but one that's grounded in real emotional Stakes this is a Batman movie that's aware of its own place within pop culture but not in winking metap fashion rather it acknowledges the comic book characters lore only to examine it and reinvent it in a way that's both substantial and daring the script from Reeves and Peter Craig forces this hero to question his history as well as confront his purpose and in doing so creates an opening for us as viewers to challenge the narratives we cling to in our own lives and with with Robert patson taking over the role of Bruce Wayne we have an actor who's not just prepared but hungry to explore this figure's weird dark instincts this is not the dashing air to a fortune prowling about kicking ass in a cool costume this is Travis Bickle in the bat suit detached and disillusioned he's 2 years into his tenure as Batman tracking criminals from on high in Wayne Tower an inspired switch from the usual sprawl of Wayne Manor suggesting an even greater isolation from society they think I'm hiding in the shadows he intones in an opening voiceover but I am the shadows in the harsh light of day patson gives us hungover Indie Rockstar Vibes but at night you can see the rush he gets from swooping in and executing his version of Vengeance even beneath the tactical gear and I black as he's shown in pretty much every role he's taken since Twilight made him a global superstar in 28 working with singular aour from David Cronenberg to Clare Denny to the safty brothers patson is at his best when he's playing characters who make you uncomfortable even more than Christian Bale in the role patson is so skilled at making his beautiful angular features seem unsettling so when he first spies on the impossibly sexy Zoe kravits as Selena Kyle slinking into her leather motorcycle gear and shimmying down the fire escape in her own pursuit of nocturnal Justice there's an unmistakable flicker of a charge in his eyes ooh She's A Freak Like Me Patterson and Kravitz have insane chemistry with each other she is his match physically and emotionally every step of the way this is no flirty purring Catwoman she's a fighter and a Survivor with a loyal heart and a strong sense of what's right following her lead role in Steven soderberg's Hightech Thriller Kimmy Kravitz continues to reveal a fierce Charisma and quiet strength she's part of a murderer's row of supporting performers all of whom get meaty roles to play Jeffrey Wright is the rare voice of idealism and decency as the eventual Commissioner Gordon John Truro is low-key chilling as Crime Boss Carmine Falcone Andy ciri Caesar and Reeves Apes movies brings a paternal wisdom and warmth as Alfred Colin Ferell is completely unrecognizable as the sleazy villainous Oswald cobblepot better known as the Penguin and Paul Dono is Flatout terrifying as the Riddler whose own drive for vengeance provides the story spine he goes to extremes here in a way that's reminiscent of his startling work and There Will Be Blood his derangement is so intense you may find s unexpectedly laughing just to break the tension he creates but there's nothing amusing about his portrayal Dono makes you feel as if you're watching a man who's Truly Deeply Disturbed this is not to say that the Batman is a downer far from it despite the overlong running time of nearly 3 hours this is a film that's consistently viscerally gripping the coolest Batmobile yet a muscular vehicle that's straight out of Mad Max Fury Road figures prominently in one of the movie's most heart pounding sequences it's an elaborate car chase and Chain Reaction crash ending with an upside down shot of fiery Fury that literally had me applauding during my screening during a fight at a thumping nightclub punctuated by pulsating red lights you can feel every punch and kick that's one of the more compelling elements of seeing this superhero in his early days he isn't invincible and a shootout in a pitch black hallway illuminated only by the blast of shotgun fire is both harrowing and dazzling greatly magnifying the power of scenes like these is the score from veteran composer Michael jaino best known for his Pixar movie music he does something totally different with the Batman percussive and Horn heavy it is massive and demanding and you will feel it deep in your core working with artists and Crafts People operating at the top of their game Reeves has made a movie that manages to be ethereal yet weighty at the same time substantial yet impressionistic cinematographer Greg Fraser pulls off the same sort of stunning magic trick he did with his Oscar nominated work in Denny's villain's Dune through pouring rain and neon lights there's both a gauz and a heft to his imagery his use of Shadow and silhouette is masterful and does so much to convey a sense of forboding and tension I could write an entire separate essay on the film's many uses of the color red to suggest energy danger even hope and the costume design from the great Jacqueline Duran with Dave Crossman and Glenn Dylan designing patson's Rough and Tumble bat suit put just the right Finishing Touch on the film's cool edgy Vibe this is the most beautiful Batman movie you've ever seen even if it's not really a Batman movie at all where do you go after the Dark Knight Ben effel blew it and even Christopher Nolan who brought unprecedented levels of realism and gravitas to that franchise best Batman Saga couldn't improve on what he' created in his 2012 sequel so what is Cloverfield director Matt Reeves strategy answer go darker than the Dark Knight deadlier than no time to die and longer than Dune with a serious-minded Batman stand alone of his own leaning into those elements doesn't automatically mean audiences will Embrace ree's Vision but this grounded frequently brutal and nearly 3-hour film Noir registers among the best of the genre even if or more aply because what makes the film so great is its willingness to dismantle and interrogate the very concept of superheroes sure that's been done before who watches the Watchman alen Mo memorably asked influencing Decades of spandex clad savior stories though Reeves does something relatively unique here at least by comic book movie standards he strips the genre of its Supernatural elements even more than the Nolan Trilogy did and introduces a more complex version of a classic pulp hero who's only a whisker's breath removed from the story's bad guy morally speaking whereas these movies are typically defined by their villains the Batman gets under your skin by asking what if the good guys aren't really the good guys what if the person we were counting on to protect us might actually be making the situation worse while Batman who's played here by gloomy Twilight star Robert patson representing the orphan character's tortured psychology to an almost painful degree focuses on punching out Petty thugs in shadowed alleys and on subway platforms The Riddler at genuinely disturbing Paul Dano emerges to expose dispose of the white collar Scoundrels embedded at the highest levels of power both men are Vigilantes though one is preoccupied with helping the police while the other targets the systemic corruption that undermines our faith in such institutions in Gotham City for sure but offscreen as well in ways far more unsettling than most audiences might expect the Batman channels the fears and frustrations of our current political climate presenting a meaty full course crime Saga that blends elements of the classic gangster film with cuttingedge commentary about challenges facing the modern world it's a hugely ambitious undertaking and one that's strong enough to work even without Batman's presence not that it would have any reason to exist without him but by incorporating the character and so many of the franchises trademarks Catwoman a slinky Zoe Kravitz the penguin Colin feral all but unrecognizable loyal Butler Alfred Andy ciris fully analog and an epic car chase involving the latest iteration of the Batmobile Reeves electrifies the dense Ultra dark proceedings with an added level of excitement that justifies the film's relatively demanding running time from the beginning the director breaks from the stylistic influences of the genre establishing a tone that almost never feels derivative of other comic book movies that said one could certainly point to Jeff lobe and Tim sales killer serial the long Halloween as a common thematic influence between this and The Dark Knight that's where Crime Boss Carmine Falcone John Truro comes from though practical action sequences Hue closer to Korean films like old boy than Nolan's nvo 7s Style No More Lies reads the blood red indictment scrawled across the face of the Riddler's first victim no less a figure than Gotham's unsavory mayor Rupert penry Jones that's just one of several Grizzly murders perpetrated by this maniacal Avenger who's as twisted and self-righteous as that sicko from the Saw movies Edward nashton AK The Riddler wears greasy coke bottle glasses and what looks like a leather fetish Hood it turns out to be a winter combat mask live streaming his mind games on a message board for conspiracy crackpots but here's the twist there really is a conspiracy among Gotham's most powerful one that traces back to the Wayne family and it falls to Bruce to untangle it before it tears the city apart why him the Riddler has drawn Batman in leaving handmade cards loaded with ciphers and other puzzles at each of his crime scenes part of the film's reality is to avoid calling comic book characters by their traditional names you no doubt noticed the the in the title of the Batman and asked yourself what it's meant to signify in using the definite article Reeves isn't necessarily trying to say that he's created the definitive screen incarnation of the character if anything that tiny extra word casts an air of existential mystery around its Mast and Anonymous hero who doesn't even know what to call himself early on when the imposing leader of a violent street gang taunts the hell are you supposed to be the bat clad vigilante growls back I'm Vengeance that's how Bruce Wayne thinks of himself when we first meet this version of the character no origin story but rather in media re two years into defending Gotham from the brink of Anarchy ravaged by a major narcotics epidemic courtesy of a street drug called drops the city finds itself facing a level of disorder somewhere between a pre juliani Manhattan and the final minutes of Todd Phillips The Joker though the two films exist in different dimensions of the same Gotham Multiverse reuniting with production designer James chinland with whom he worked on the Planet of the Apes sequels Reeves presence the most robust version of Gotham we've seen since Tim Burton's 1989 Batman clearly modeled on New York City Amplified through set extensions and stunning CGI this CD Metropolis plunges us into The Big Apples rotten core the Midtown equivalent of Time Square is illuminated by even more giant digital screens a black cluster of buildings Looms where Lower Manhattan would be and you don't want to go anywhere near the Madison Square Garden like Arena where the finale takes place at times Batman surveys the city from an upper floor of a half-built skyscraper otherwise he zooms around at street level on his bat cycle eventually upgrading to a souped up muscle car the unveiling of which is one of the film's big Thrills except for hidden camera contact lenses his technology is mostly realistic and unless one counts a rooftop based jump he can't fly unlike so many DC Comic Book Heroes Batman is neither a god nor an alien he has no Fantastical abilities Bruce Wayne's superpower is his billion doll Fortune but the guy behind the mass breaks and bleeds just like anybody else a point Reeves reminds us of with a shot of patson's bare back covered in scars rather than leaning on a theme Michael Chino's score surprises ranging from tense tribal drums to Nirvana to Opera while editors William Hoy and Tyler Nelson avoid obvious angles leaving quiet spaces for audiences to process and question what's happening as the Batman or Vengeance or whatever he's called patson is the most Sullen of the actors to have played the character which reads as a kind of Daredevil nihilism when whenever he's in costume he doesn't seem Fearless so much as ambivalent about whether he lives or dies once the cowl comes off however paton's interpretation gets more intriguing brooding and withdrawn he's a damaged loner with unresolved daddy issues saddled with all kinds of complicated emotional trauma it's tough to see a hero hurting so much and yet his troubled past informs every relationship including the one with a lunatic who counts Bruce Wayne among his targets The Riddler schemes are genuinely scary SC far more than seems reasonable for a PG-13 rated movie like the remote controlled exploding collar clamped on Peter sarg guard's drugg out district attorney Gil Coulson the idea here is that some of Gotham's top ranking officials plus cat burglar come cocktail waitress Selena Kyle Kravitz are somehow mixed up with Falcone and The Riddler has taken it upon himself to purge the system of such elements the Chinatown intricate specifics of just how intertwined city government is with organized crime can make your head spin though Reeves lays it out relatively elegantly such that audiences can follow the many twists of Batman's investigation this is first and foremost a detective story unsentimental as they come one half expects Gwyneth potro's head to show up in a box at some point and though the authorities take the Riddler into custody well before the end the movie's most shocking stretch is still to come just when Gotham seems ready to celebrate its next chapter it's hard to imagine how Reeves who was shooting the Batman during the early days of the pandemic could have anticipated the January 6 Capital Riot and yet the signs must have been there all along for the film's chilling climax hinges on activating susceptible citizens to conduct a mass terrorist attack in the dark night Heath Ledger's Anarchist Joker felt like he'd stepped right out of your nightmares but there's something even more intimidating about the way the Riddler operates he literally triggers others to become Vigilantes as well and judging by the real world copycats previous Batman movies inspired such as the Aurora Colo shooting that could have consequences a movie like this will inspire countless debates does the Batman really need to be this darkar can it hold a candle to Nolan's Trilogy there's room enough for both to exist and space for sequels to build on this Foundation which assumes a certain familiarity with the character's mythology that's the beauty of Batman who transcends all the other heroes in the DC Comics stable like Dracula or Hamlet this iconic antihero stands up to endless reinvention whether campy or pop self-questioning or complicit he tells us something new about ourselves every time he steps Out of the Shadows the Batman grows $69.35 in the United States and Canada and $2.9 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $ $1.8 million Italy $1.2 million and Japan $10 million when Batman takes his shirt off toward the beginning to the film he has a large scar on his shoulder the scar is gone later in the movie when he appears shirtless while laying out the clue he's gathered on the Riddler case during the wide shot of Gotham City Hall St George's Hall Liverpool 5753 you can see a bus stop in the bottom right of the frame this is a merca travel bus stop in Liverpool and being in the UK the bus stop is on the left hand side of the road with the rectangle plate on top showing the buses that stop their facing the oncoming traffic when Bruce Batman first gets on his bike his hands are not wrapped but when he gets to Wayne Manor to review the night his hands are wrapped like like a boxers when Selena Kyle is cracking the safe she is wearing gloves later on when she is back in her apartment with Batman the audience can see that her nails are longer which would not have been able to fit over the gloves in the finale Batman saves people in the Water by cutting the electric cable using the knife on his chest then Falls in water he gets out without the knife neither on his chest nor in his hand the next scene he meets Selena and The Knife is back on his chest the doctor tells Bruce that she's hoping the patient will stabilize if he is not stable he should be intubated and in an induced coma not just sedated with an oxygen mask on his face the moment when anaka calof's passport is shown on the screen a birth year is marked as 1998 but social security number starts with 490 depicting that her year of birth is 1990 when gc1 news plays Riddler's latest video with a victim who has rats strapped to his chest it uses subtitles for Riddler's voice the subtitle misspelled judgment as judgment which is incorrect in American English however the rule in English is that g can only be soft while proceeding an e i or Y this anomaly is derived from a misspelling in an early dictionary and has been propagated ever since both spellings are acceptable slight a synchronized dialogue obviously dubbed in post-production when Gordon says you have any idea what kind of trouble you're in at 11:25 in the Final Shots when Batman and Selena go their separate ways on the bikes as Selena drives under the arch towards the camera the UK road marking for giveway can clearly be seen on the left lane from Selena's point of view odd production didn't swap for American markings neither Batman supposedly the world's greatest detective nor the gcpd seem to try and search for Riddler's apartment despite the fact that the photos of the club are clearly taken from an elevated position rather than from the street the forensics officer taking photographs at the scene of the mayor's murder uses is the flash when taking photographs for evidence even photos of reflective surfaces such as the framed newspaper Pages any experienced photographer would use the iso and aperture settings to take photographs without a flash which would eliminate flash Reflections and Whiting out of the area being photographed it is Halloween in Gotham City a man Paul Dono spies on the apartment of Mayor Don Mitchell Jor Rupert penry Jones the mayor watches a debate between himself and his opponent Beller real James Lawson who wants to stop the Gotham renewal program that Mitchell benefits from The massed Man known as The Riddler sneaks up on Mitchell and bludgeons him with a hammer until dead he then starts to wrap duct tape around Mitchell's head billionaire Bruce Wayne Robert patson narrates over how he has spent the last two years as Batman seeking out criminals in Gotham working with the police department he has gotten the bat signal as a means to warn Crooks that Batman is coming for them Bruce stalks a gang of thugs with clown makeup as they follow a man off the subway and harass him before they can beat him up Bruce steps out as Batman and begins to Pummel the thugs as he declares I'm Vengeance Batman joins Lieutenant James Gordon Jeffrey wri at Mitchell's apartment to investigate his murder The Riddler left a card addressed for the Batman along with a card containing a riddle and a cipher what does a liar do when he's dead commissioner Pete Savage Alex ferns comes in to chew Gordon out for allowing Batman to be involved in the investigation even though rid intended for Batman to be there he determines that the answer to the riddle is he lies still Bruce returns to the Batcave and gets help from his Butler Alfred pennyworth Andy ciris in finding a code within the cipher that leads them to find the word Drive Batman goes with Gordon into Mitchell's garage to find a car that had been broken into and contains a flash drive along with Mitchell's severed thumb together they find incriminating photos of Mitchell with a woman named anakah Hanah hrzic outside a club called the Iceberg Lounge Batman goes to the Iceberg Lounge to speak to mobster Oswald cobblepot penguin Colin Ferell after being denied entry by the thugs at the door Batman fights his way through a slew of goons before meeting penguin directly he questions penguin about Mitchell and anakah but he claims to not know anything Batman notes a young woman Selena Kyle Zoe Kravitz working at the club and obtaining a drug called drop to sell Bruce keeps an eye on Selena as she returns to her apartment that shares with anakah they watch news showing her in pcks with Mitchell since they got leaked after Batman and Gordon open the files after anakah goes to bed Selena sneaks out as Catwoman and goes to Mitchell's apartment which is now a closed-off crime scene Batman finds Selena trying to grab whatever info she can find on anakah they go back to her apartment and find it ransacked with anakah missing furthermore they see news saying that Riddler has killed Savage along with a viral video sent by Riddler saying that Mitchell and Savage were not good men and as everyone had been led to Selena deems Gotham Beyond saving and leaves Batman AIDS recovery efforts and vows to inspire hope in Gotham Matt Reeves the Batman isn't a superhero movie not really all the trappings are there the Batmobile the rugged suit the gadgets courtesy of trusty Butler Alfred and of course at the center is the Caped Crusader himself brooding tormented seeking his own brand of nighttime Justice in a Gotham City that's spiraling into squalor and he but in Reeves confident hands everything is breathtakingly alive and new as director and co-writer he's taken what might seem like a familiar tale and made it epic even operatic his Batman is more akin to a gritty '70s crime drama than a soaring and transporting Blockbuster with its kinetic unpredictable action it calls to mind films like the Warriors as well as one of the greatest of them all in the genre The French Connection and with a series of high-profile murders driving the plot it's sometimes feels as if the Zodiac Killer is terrorizing the citizens of Gotham and yet despite these touchstones this is unmistakably a Matt Reeves film he accomplishes here what he did with his gripping entries in the Planet of the Apes franchise created an electrifying entertaining spectacle but one that's grounded in real emotional Stakes this is a Batman movie that's aware of its own place within pop culture but not in winking metap fashion rather it acknowledges
