first just to clarify the position of Hungary on migration it's true that the number of migrants in Hungary zero uh and the reason is very simple the reason is very simple we have a system which is a fair system we say that the border is a border and to cross the border illegally it's an illegal action so we can't accept that somebody illegally crossing the border line you know it's a crime it's not a human right something it's a crime so therefore we we treat everybody who is doing that as a crime how did Hungary transform from a country overwhelmed by a tidal wave of Muslim Asylum Seekers to one with near total control over its borders what drastic measures did the Hungarian government Implement to reverse a crisis that threatened National stability welcome back to Nowhere diary in this video we'll talk about how Hungary solved their Muslim immigration crisis the country's historical relationship with Muslims is deeply intertwined with its role as a significant Battleground between the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe This interaction spanning from the medieval period through the early modern era has earned Hungary the epithet The Fortress of Christianity or the Bastion of Europe due to its pivotal role in resisting ottoman expansion the roots of this historical relationship traced back to the early 16th century when the Ottoman Empire began its aggressive expansion into Central Europe The crucial Turning Point occurred on August 29th 1526 at the Battle of mohat the Ottomans under Sultan sulan the Magnificent defeated the Hungarian forces led by King Louis II this catastrophic loss resulted in the fragmentation of the kingdom of Hungary and the beginning of a prolonged period of Ottoman dominance of over much of Hungarian territory following the Battle of moohat Hungary was effectively partitioned the central and southern parts of the country came under direct ottoman control while the Habsburg monarchy dominated the Western and Northern regions this division led to significant cultural and administrative influences from the Ottomans who established a well-organized administrative system in the occupied territories cities such as Buddha and pec became major centers of Islamic culture featuring mosques baths and Islamic legal and educational institutions during the Ottoman period which lasted from 1541 to 1699 Hungary experienced a complex blend of conflict and cultural integration the Ottomans introduced various aspects of Islamic culture and governance which left a lasting mark on Hungarian architecture and urban planning despite this resistance to ottoman rule remained strong among the Hungarian population the Habsburg monarchy backed by other European powers continuously waged Wars to reclaim and secure the territory hungary's reputation as the Fortress of Christianity became prominent during this era due to its role in halting the ottoman Advance into Europe notable military engagements such as the siege of Vienna in 1529 and 1631 underscored hungary's strategic position in defending the Christian Heartland of Europe from further ottoman encroachment the term reflects hungary's crucial position as the front line in the battle against the Ottoman Empire which sought to expand its influence across Europe the end of Ottoman rule in Hungary came with the great Turkish War culminating in the Treaty of carlowitz in 1699 this treaty marked the formal end of Ottoman control over Hungary leading to the restoration of Habsburg Authority the decline of Ottoman influence brought a Resurgence of Christian governance and culture solidifying hungary's status as a Bastion of European Christianity in the 19th and early 20th centuries hungary's interactions with Muslims were relatively limited focusing more on diplomatic and trade relations rather than conflict it wasn't until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that discussions around [Music] Muslim populations and their integration into European societies became more relevant this shift was influenced by recent immigration patterns and the evolving geopolitical landscape but it is important to note that the historical context of Hungary as a defender of Christendom continues to shape its cultural and political identity the current immigration crisis in EU started in 2015 it was a pivotal moment in migration history not just in Hungary but most EU members it was shaped by complex factors involving geographic location EU membership and migration routes hungary's position as both a Transit and destination country made it a focal point for migrants seeking asylum in Europe migrants from Kosovo Afghanistan and Syria were among those seeking refuge in the European Union due to circumstances in their home countries the conflict and instability in Syria alongside economic hardship and violence in Afghanistan and Kosovo drove thousands to flee the European Union with its promise of safety and better opportunities became a primary destination for these Asylum Seekers hungary's geographic location places it on the western Balkan migration route a major Corridor for irregular land migration this route stretching from Turkey through Greece and the former yug republics to Hungary was particularly active due to its relative accessibility hungary's borders as part of the eu's external Frontier served as a critical entry point for migrants aiming to reach other EU member states Hungary was a key Gateway into the EU before the immigration crisis migrants used Hungary as a Transit country to enter other European nations the country's membership in the EU and its relatively prosperous economy acted as pool factors attracting those seeking Asylum however the 2015 influx overwhelmed hungary's capacity to manage the situation effectively leading to a dramatic rise in border crossings that year the country faced a dramatic shift in migration patterns becoming the second European Union country to record a significant number of irregular border crossings just behind Greece with over 41,000 apprehensions Hungary saw its borders become a major entry point for migrants but the situation took a turn later that same year when Hungary built fences along its Southern borders with Serbia and Croatia this move effectively cut off Hungary from the Western Balkan migration route before the fences were up Hungary was seeing an average of 274 arrivals per day however as the summer of 2015 rolled in this number skyrocketed by 447 to one500 daily arrivals during June July and August the situation worsened in September and October with daily arrivals exceeding 7,000 by November and December the daily arrivals dropped drastically to just 10 people per day the new year didn't bring relief immediately in January 2016 arrival started to with a staggering 35% increase from January February going from 18 to 82 people per day this trend continued into march with daily arrivals Rising by 48% to 116 people while there was a brief uptick in early 2017 the numbers eventually fell sharply reaching a low of just 10 people per day by December hungary's response included several legislative changes by August and September 2015 along with the completion of the fences Hungary declared Serbia a safe Third Country and expedited Asylum processes while also tightening procedural safeguards climbing or damaging the fences became a criminal offense a new system of Transit zones was established in 2015 located in Rosa and TOA where migrants could legally enter however these zones were often overcrowded leading to lengthy weight in Serbia by January 2018 only one person per day was allowed to enter each Transit Zone causing waiting times to stretch up to a year in 2016 Hungary made a significant change to its Asylum law the new rule allowed police to push back migrants who were caught within 8 km of the border and had entered the country illegally this move was part of a series of amendments aimed at tightening restrictions and reducing support for Asylum Seekers and those with International protection by March 2017 the law was further revised to mandate that all irregular migrants be pushed back to the southern border this policy meant that not only new arrivals but also those already in the country were affected in 2017 alone 9,136 people were pushed back with the numbers rising to 25603 by 2020 since 2016 over 71,000 people have been removed from Hungary under these measures Asylum applications could only be made in transit zones and even children over 14 were detained while their cases were processed these policies faced heavy criticism from International and EU bodies critics argued that they violated the principles of effective protection and non-real which are meant to prevent the return of Asylum Seekers to unsafe condition conditions due to these conditions several EU countries stopped transfers to Hungary under the Dublin third mechanism in March 2017 the European Court of Human Rights condemned Hungary in the ilas and Ahmed versus Hungary case ruling that the Detention of migrants in transit zones was a violation of their right to Liberty this ruling was followed by a grand chamber decision in November 2019 which deemed the detention without formal decisions and due processes arbitrary in 2015 the European commission began an infringement procedure against Hungary over its Asylum legislation this led to a case being heard by the European court of justice in January 2018 involving Hungary the Czech Republic and Poland for their refusal to comply with EU Refugee quotas following the CJ's decision in May 2020 Hungary decided to drop its Transit Zone approach for handling Asylum Seekers new rules came into play with the adoption of the transitional rules and epidemic preparedness laws marking the end of the state of danger as of May 20120 Asylum Seekers needed to secure a single entry permit before applying for asylum in Hungary to get this permit they had to submit a statement of intent at Hungarian embassies in Belgrade or in Kev before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 this overhaul made the Asylum process much tougher leading to just 30 applications in 2021 the EU commission then took Hungary back to court for not following a previous ruling since 2015 the European commission has opened five infringement procedures against Hungary over its Asylum policies these actions were triggered by hungary's tough restrictions like its refusal to adhere to EU Refugee quotas and its requirement for Asylum Seekers to declare their intent through diplomatic channels these Asylum policies shook things up for people seeking refuge in Hungary from September 2015 to December 2016 nearly 2,900 people ended up in court for crossing the border illegally with most being convicted in 2016 alone Hungarian authorities processed 54586 Asylum applications but a whopping 49 item 479 was suspended and 4,675 were outright rejected eurostat reported that less than 1% of these applications were accepted making it the lowest acceptance rate in the EU from July 2016 to March 2017 Hungary pushed back 2186 migrants under their 8 km distance to the Border rule in 2017 out of 3,397 Asylum decisions 249 were suspended and 2,80 rejected leaving just a small number of claims accepted by April 2018 authorities had caught 19,41 19 migrants who entered Hungary at various border points fast forward to 2020 and 73.3% of Asylum applications were rejected with only 17.6% granted Refugee status and 99.1% receiving subsidiary protection Hungary didn't just stop at building fences it went all out pouring around $1.96 billion into tightening border security the country extended its fences and rolled out new immigration laws that made it tougher for Third Country Nationals to apply for Asylum domestically these Hardline policies worked in favor of prime minister Victor Orban and his fedz party the strong anti-immigration stance helped them clinch major wins in both the 2018 parliamentary elections and the 20122 European elections orban's tough approach seemed to resonate with voters cementing his party's dominance in Hungarian politics but the country's anti-muslim immigrants approach faces criticism from leftist human rights groups and the European Union everywhere you look online Hungary is being being labeled far right by mainstream media and liberal EU countries like UK France and Germany all of whom are now experiencing major problems with their Muslim population and yet Hungary is Unapologetic about its strict policies this video sums it up nicely liberals and the left leaning establishment can condemn Hungary all they want but it won't change the fact that hungary's policies are influencing other EU countries to adopt more restrictive immigration measures this Conservative Christian country continues to uphold its reputation as the basti of Europe despite criticisms by its liberal neighbors and that's all we have for you in this video we'd love to hear what you think about hungary's actions do you agree or disagree with their anti-immigration
