[Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] he [Music] 15 days until Gamecock football is back under the lights in Colombia getting oh so close to the start of college football season welcome to wire wire I'm Cole Bryson and I am stoked to start the show with a bang today joining me right now is the head football coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer coach welcome into the show um I don't know if you are aware of this or not but I wanted to start the show with this question our listeners coach reside uh right here in the upstate in sparenberg in Greenville and I don't know if you know this but there's a mini rivalry between sparenberg and Greenville and who's the superior City so I've got to know with your recruiting visits to the upstate coach who do you say who does Shane Beamer say is the superior City between sparenberg and Greenville come on man you know I'm not going to answer that uh they're both fantastic I uh I realized that my first year at Carolina I went up there and did a gamec club event and I think the first year was Greenville and and found out all about the Rivalry when I heard from the people in Spartanburg and then the next year I went to Spartanburg and heard from the people in Greenville so both are fantastic I got some great friends here in Columbia that are from Greenville great friends in Columbia that grew up in Spartanburg and love them both just like I do all the places in South Carolina good answer coach good answer are not falling for the bait today uh coach I want to start with something that's not talked about a lot before we get into the football conversation the Beamer Family Foundation back to school drive I found that very intriguing haven't heard a lot about it and wanted to give you a chance to talk about that just a few days ago right yeah no I appreciate that uh means a lot certainly when I was hired back here at South Carolina I realized that I've been given a platform um here with the position that I'm in to be able to uh help others and and give back to this state give back to this community so uh my wife Emily and I created the Beamer Family Foundation to work with you know a lot of different groups but schools here in the Columbia area the Children's Hospital in the Columbia area we're closely involved with and the back to school drive is just working with local elementary schools here uh in the Midlands uh you know to provide them with just school supplies and then also support you know from our football team and the program throughout the year as well so Sunday after practice ractice a lot of the schools here in Columbia started school this week Sunday after practice all of our players came in the indoor immediately from the practice field before even going to the locker room and stuffed backpacks and and did their part as well to help the school so something we're passionate about and and I appreciate you uh allowing me to share absolutely man that's that's fantastic right that's uh when it all comes down to it big picture-wise that uh that's awesome to see you and not only you and your family but the team uh participating in that thank you for Jo ing me today coach um this college football season as we know has more excitement and anticipation in the buildup than most seasons in large part uh due to the expanded playoff right I want to know as a coach who's in The Grind of the day-to-day do you and your staff feel that new excitement and anticipation or is that something that you try to completely block out new excitement and anticipation with the playoff you mean sure yeah um it's nothing we really talk about but I think going back to January I felt that within our football team to be honest with you that they understand that with a 12 team playoff there's more opportunities for more teams to go win a National Championship and especially when you're in this conference and when you're in this conference the SEC if you're one of the you know three four five best teams in this league more than likely you're going to be in the playoff and there's years in South Carolina's past that South Carolina would have been in the playoff had there been a 12 team playoff and uh our players certainly understand that and we've got to be more consistent but you know a lot of the teams that are being mentioned as playoff caliber teams this year teams that we've beaten in our time here uh at South Carolina so we've got to do it more consistently and do it more often but uh our players certainly have those high expectations and understand that with uh eight new teams that gives eight new teams across college football uh an opportunity opport Unity uh that they didn't have before head coach Shane Beamer joining us right here on the fan Upstate 971 sparenberg 977 Greenville and on the free Odyssey app uh coach back in may we talked to you at the Spartanburg gamecock club meeting and the one thing that I took away from our conversation then was your wide receiver room you mentioned that you specifically were looking not only for the talent to step up uh to step up but the leadership as well and challenging someone to step up and emerge three months later do you feel as if you've seen what you wanted uh going into the season from that wide receiver room we're getting there uh I don't feel like we're there yet um you know if you had just to be completely honest if I had been asked and I was if I was asked two or three weeks ago who I felt like the top six receivers are are were going to be on our team I wasn't really sure and as I sit here today two and a half a little over two weeks before the first game the picture is a little more more clear but I'm still not certain who our top six or so receivers are going to be uh there's no question those guys have gotten better Mike furry our new receivers coach has done an awesome job of developing those guys already and we're better at the receiver position than what we were a couple weeks ago but uh we still are looking for those you know six to seven guys that we can count on and that know what to do can catch the football consistently can uh execute consistently and make plays uh we're still trying to figure that out and and still waiting for some guys to really you know grab the ball by the horns and go coach I'm glad you mentioned that with Mike furry a fascinating higher I thought it was a great hire from Limestone right here in the upstate when you look at the wide receiver room and you look at it as a pie and you have the development of the guys in the room versus the development from the coach in addition uh to bringing in Mike furry like you talked about how much is it of a relationship between having the right guys in the room versus having them developed the right way yeah great question um I mean you got to have the right guys in the room because no matter how good a coach we feel like we all are if you don't have really good players it's gonna be hard sure and uh we feel like certainly we have really good players in that wide receiver room but certainly you need somebody that can develop them and I think you know every position has to have that to a certain degree but I really feel like the receiver position is is one that there's just so much that a coach can impact that you know so many players in high school you know they come when they when you're in high school you're the best player on the field no Corner in in the high school game is probably going to go up and press them at the line of scrimmage get in their face and play Man coverage and all that and then a guy comes here and that's what you're going to see every day in practice and that's what you're going to see in game so you've got to be able to um I'll use Nick Harbor for example Nick Harbor for us did not that never happened to him in high school he hardly played receiver in high school so now yeah everybody knows Nick haror is big and can run fast but now you've got to teach him and help develop him and how to get off press coverage at the line of scrimmage how to run routes versus uh different coverages you know uh catching the ball in traffic blocking uh blocking rules change based on the coverage and what the defense does on the snap so there's a lot and uh to be able to have a great coach in there is huge but then to be able to have a coach like Mike who uh played the game of football at the receiver position at the highest level in the NFL for a long time and he can talk to those guys about how he was able to do it it's uh extremely beneficial and extremely critical coach before we move away from the new hired conversation obviously you had to replace a special teams coach and you brought in coach Elliott who was very familiar with the program would you say that coach Elliott has had the same impact on his position group a hire that exited a lot of South Carolina Gamecock fans yeah he has really uh fired up about all the guys that we brought in new coaches but Sean's done an awesome job obviously familiar with this state familiar with this program and and um you know when I made those two hires with Mike and Shawn specifically there were certain things that I wanted to see happen and certain certain things that I needed to see within that group and uh you know seen it and really excited about both those hires and what they've done so far coach something that I saw on social media that was really fascinating to me was you and your team in a post practice huddle recently where head basketball coach Lamont Paris was speaking to your team I wanted to quote something that he said that I thought really stuck out he said the team always prevails no one matters no one's opinions matter outside of this you either believe or you perish my suggestion is to believe and compete coach my question is how do you take what Lamont Paris did last year in the SEC by doing more with less and opinion and apply that to your staff and your program yeah uh really appreciate Lamont coming over he did a great job and giv him credit I literally told him about 90 seconds before the team came over that I wanted him to speak to the team so everything he said he said it in uh on a whim but I told him when he and I were sitting there talking uh and what he told him kind of relates to this obviously is you know literally one of the very first team meetings we had this season I talked to the team about Lamont and his basketball team and the parallels between our team right now and his team going into last season nobody thought they're going to be very good they were picked whatever poll you looked at they were either picked dead last in the SEC or they were picked 13th out of 14 teams in the SEC The Narrative was we lost GG Jackson the best player they weren't very good the year before with GG so how in the world are they going to be any good without GG and it's so much so similar to us thinks are going to be very good they lost Spencer rler and uh Xavier Legette how can they possibly replace them playing in the SEC all that as well and um that's exactly what Lamont you know told our team is the outside opinion doesn't matter and they've heard that enough from me over the last you know three seasons 2021 nobody thought we were going to be worth a dang and and we exceeded expectations and then exceeded expectations in 2022 in so many ways but anytime you can hear that from someone else who just did it here recently uh we've spent a lot of time talking about uh Lamont and his team so it was great to hear uh from him directly for our players to hear from him directly head football coach Shane Beamer joining us right here on wire to wire on the fan Upstate coach I want to talk about Lenor sers uh you know I think it's easy for the majority of people and for the majority of Gamecock fans especially to take what they hear from the media and those who cover the program and use that to form their own opinion of your your qb1 but what I want to know from you is what have you seen from lenorris that the everyday media member or the Casual fan may not be able to see that gives you confidence in his ability to lead the program in 2024 um not a ton because honestly with Lenor is kind of what you see is what you get uh you know what you guys have seen publicly that's who he is but just you know obviously seeing him every day in practice just as probably just his Poise you know for being a young guy nothing bothers him or if it does he doesn't show it he's just he's so even killed he's so poised he doesn't get too high too low which is a great quality in a quarterback but then he's extremely uh extremely competitive and um um you know it's funny we have like a lot of schools do we have you know we have a camera on practice like on the the quarterback's helmet so D Loggins our quarterback's coach can see you know what the quarterbacks look looking at when you're watching the video of practice but it also picks up audio you know so we had a kind of a red zone competitive period against the defense yesterday and and Lenoris threw a game-winning touchdown pass and um hearing watching that myself on my computer after practice just hearing the audio of how excited he was his celebration it was a uh he's extremely competitive and um it was pretty cool hearing that and that's maybe you know something that people don't see but he very much is uh uh what you see is what you get coach you've been very adamant um about improving the Run game in 2024 several of your players have been on record recently talking about the running back room and talking about rocket Sanders do you look at the Run game's potential uh success in 2024 based on multiple factors including offensive line we all know you were beat up there last year or going back to the conversation with a wide receiver room do you feel like having a guy like rocket Sanders in that room is a big enough boost to get you guys where you want to be in terms of rushing in 2024 yeah I think it's a combination of everything obviously when you bring in a running back the caliber of Rocket it's gonna uh be beneficial there's no doubt about it but there's so many other factors that go into the Run game it's the quarterback making sure we're in the right play and making the right decision it's the ability to throw the football which helps the Run game if teams have to respect the pass obviously it's going to be the offensive line being a year older and hopefully being able to stay healthy which is what we weren't able to do last year and then as I've said many times it's the perimeter blocking you know a lot of times it's anytime your running game struggle it might be easy to say well it's the offensive Line's fault well there's receivers that are blocking on the perimeter there's tight ends that have to block in the Run game so we've spent a lot of time uh working on that trying to continue to schematically make sure we're better in the Run game game but then also personnel-wise making sure that we're better in the Run game all across the board from an offensive standpoint and like the uh tweaks that we made like the improvements that we made obviously schematically and personnel-wise and and uh really really looking forward to you know seeing what we do from a run game standpoint this season coach how would you describe the depth of this roster compared to the depth of the other three teams that you've had at South Carolina uh better than ever it really is uh you know certainly that's recruiting that's transfer portal as we've slowly built this thing up you know we went into my first season you're allowed to have 85 guys on scholarship and we went into my first season I think we started the season with 79 scholarship football players in year one just because I got hired late I was the middle of covid you couldn't go sign a recruiting class because you couldn't go see them in person and uh it was hard and then you know 2022 uh we had some ented guys but depthwise we weren't where we needed to be 2023 we maybe had a little bit more depth but they were all young we had to start five true freshman last season so now we're to a point where I feel like we've recruited really well three years in a row and we've brought in some pieces to complement that from the transfer portal as well and uh and then we've got a bunch of guys on our team I think it's 30 players on our team that this will be their fourth year in the program or more uh a lot of them or fourth that have been here since 2021 all four years with me as the head coach and then a bunch of guys that have been here since 209 2020 as well and in jakai Moore's case since 2019 so we're older and we have more depth and and truly if you look at every position on our team I believe we have more depth than we've than we've had you know you could argue maybe the safety position because outside of DQ Smith and Nicki man wory we don't have a lot of safeties that have played a lot uh as well and we've been deeper maybe at that position position but you know outside of that uh I really like the group and that's obviously going to help from a special team standpoint that's going to help uh being able to play more people on Saturdays and keep guys fresh so we can hopefully be at our best in the fourth quarter uh every single every single game coach fantastic stuff uh really appreciate you taking time to hop on with us and best of luck to you and your team in 2024 you got it have a great weekend and thanks for having me on today absolutely that is head coach Shane Beamer the football coach at the University of South Carolina thoughts next right here on the fan upstate [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] w [Music] [Music] w [Music] [Music] over a 100 in our YouTube stream at this very moment wire to wire right here on the fan Upstate until 7 o'clock tonight getting you set for the weekend we're live on 971 sparenberg 977 Greenville also live on Twitter Facebook YouTube you can watch the show there appreciate Shan Beamer for hopping on with us on the fan Upstate talk a little Gamecock football getting you ready for the season want to react to what coach Beamer had to say get your thoughts several texts have come in on the text line 71307 start your text with the word fan again that 71307 uh we are also going to open the phone lines during this segment as well if you want to talk a little Gamecock football you can do so 844 fan phone that's 844 3263 663 there's a lot to react to um and you know what I think the wide receiver room is probably the most interesting thing that I took away and you know I I asked him in that interview um if he's seen someone emerge not just as a leader of the room but when it comes to the talent as well because you heard him say right at the end of the day the coaches are important but you got to have the guys um and Nick Harbor is certainly a good football player and I think Nick Harbor will have a good year it's tough the situation that Nick Harbor is in because everyone remembers the the year that Xavier Legette had last year right and I do think that there are some unfair expectations put on Nick Harbor and uh just a lot of Gamecock fans expecting him to replicate what Exel did last year and you know I don't think those are quite Fair Xavier leget completely different player really good player obviously that went to the Carolina Panthers but I think Nick Harbor could show a lot of signs this year that he is ready to take that wide receiver one role and I tell you this I think if you're a South Carolina fan you better hope that happens and I don't want to say You Gotta Have It Happen immediately but you better hope that by midseason he's found a stride in terms of uh embracing that wr1 position right because at the end of the day South Carolina's receiver room they're depth and uh they're they're just a big unknown right now right you could say the jury's still out on the wide receiver room so uh last week Diesel and I made our predictions for the South Carolina Gamecocks Shane Beamer said it you heard him say just a few moments ago that there's a lot of people that expect them to not be good this year and I like the comparison that he made with him and LaMont Paris and last year's South Carolina basketball team right and also how that relates to the Gamecock football team in 2024 and you know what I I haven't thought about it like the way coach Beamer presented it today I hadn't yet thought about it like that but I think he's exactly right I think he's right in the sense of that South Carolina basketball team last year have been picked to finish last in the conference very similar situation maybe not with a football team being picked to finish exactly last but still toward the bottom I do think there's some good similarities between the potential story of South Carolina football replicating what Lamont Paris did at the South Carolina basketball position now the only thing I will say the reality of it is and Coach Beamer knows this he's no stranger to this this is not something that uh is news to him the reality of it is um football is a sport where you've got 11 guys that are are going to be really really deep really really talented in the SEC again I'm not saying the SEC is not talented in basketball because it certainly is it's one of the better conferences in basketball but five and 11 that math equation shows that you're going up against more guys on the football field and those guys that you're going up against are going to be super talented because you are playing in the SEC and it's the best conference in football and it's going to be a tough tough test for South Carolina in 2024 so I like the direction that CH Beamer's going I understand the challenges and I think he understands the challenges that lie ahead as well but I think there's a lot of positive to take away from what he said let's go to the stream uh JB chimes in on the YouTube stream JB says there's a lot of unknowns on this Gamecock team quarterback wide receivers and defense no one knows but that's the fun in it well JB I will say to your com comment um I don't know that quarterback's as big of a question as you think am I saying Lenor sers is GNA be Spencer Rattler no but I think you're in a good spot as I said earlier in the week when I did green flags red flags for South Carolina I think the Gamecocks are in a really good spot quarterback wise I think that when you talk about the SEC and just how competitive that league is Lenor C and Robbie Ashford I think there's a lot of teams out there in that lower part of the conference that would feel pretty good about their potential success with those two guys and we know that Lenor sers is probably going to be the starter however if you have been following those that covered Gamecock football these past few weeks you know uh that Robbie Ashford is pushing him and I'll tell you what I've heard a lot of Gamecock fans say well I thought Lenor sers was named QB W earlier in the season or early in the year rather do we not know who qb1 is well I'll tell you my opinion on that the best situation that you could have possible is have two really good quarterbacks because you want a guy as a backup in Robbie Ashford in case something does happen to L nor Sellers and then on the flip side of that you also want a guy in Robbie Ashford pushing your quarterback to be the best that he's got to be during the summer during fall Camp wouldn't you have wouldn't you rather have gamec fans a really good backup that's pushing your starter to be better each and every day rather than a backup that you just really to be quite Frank you just don't know about you don't have a lot of confidence in right so I don't look at the Robbie Ashford Lenor Celler situation as trouble I don't look at it even as a problem for South Carolina I think it's a great thing for the Gamecock I think it's a great problem to have I'm not saying you play them both but I'm saying having a guy as good as Robbie Ashford is qb2 I've heard a lot of worse I've heard of a lot worse QB tws than Robbie Ashford I'll put it like that and I think that's a good solution 844 fan phone 844 326 3663 uh the Renewal by Anderson of the Carolina's fan phone is where you can chime in I believe this is our daily Dewey Dewey what's up yes you know Shane Beamer's gonna be coach of the year you just talk to the coach of the year you should be apologizing that him for talking bad about him because they're about to go undefeated 12 and0 when did I talk bad about him doy you talk bad about him every day you're right every day diesel does too diesel does too Diesel's catching Strays and he's not even here thanks Dewey 844 fan phone 84 4 326 3663 Diesel's catching Strays by Dewey and Diesel's not even here to defend himself diesel says or Dy says we're talking too bad about oh that's great that's great all right to the text line we go 71307 start your text with the word fan 71307 texter from the uh 419 chimes in Beamer was correct to compare the preseason rankings to USC basketball but basketball only requires three players to transform a team football so much harder no I agreed texer from the 419 and I just pointed that out just a moment ago you're right and Shane again I don't think that's some uh unknown some some something that Shane Beamer doesn't know I think Shane Beamer's very aware of that right but I think the analogy that he gave is right on I think it's right on Q to allow us as the media and US Gamecock fans to have optimism because at the end of the day we all know basketball has Five Guys on the floor South Carolina football has 11 text you're right as I said a minute ago it's a math equation it does only require three players I don't want to say only three players but it requires a smaller number of impact players to transform a team on the basketball court unlike football where you got to have dudes you got to have an offensive line we've talked about it a million times South Carolina didn't have an offensive line that was healthy last year and uh you know what I I think that if you are a Gamecock fan you should look at what Lamont Paris did last year and the relationship between him and Beamer absolutely look at that as a positive right why not you should absolutely look at it as a positive uh let's see JB says I'm just excited to watch it unfold I think this team will be much improved but still win five to six games due to this Gauntlet schedule Wesley says our daily DUI call that's probably a little bit better of an explanation to the call by Dewey than the daily Dewey Wesley I like that I like that um JB I do think I I I understand your comment I do agree with you on improved five to six games that's the reality because of the conference right and that's going to be the reality year in and year out I know that we talk every single year when the schedules come out the first thing that we all talk about is South Carolina schedule and how difficult it is and yes it is difficult yes the SEC is the best league by far in football but Shane Beamer knows in my opinion I believe Shane Beamer knows that reality is winning 6 to7 8 eight games uh Steve Spurrier came in 111 three years in a row he said at SEC media days at the playoffs are the expectations and again we talked about it yesterday that's what he should say but I think deep down everyone including coach Beamer knows that the reality of it is they hit a wall last year and that wall was called the SEC that's the reality of playing in this league you know there's not much room to uh have errors there's not much room for error when playing in the SEC right and um I'll tell you this when you're playing in the SEC you have a good quarterback in Spencer Rattler well that's a great start but if your offensive line is not good and they're not healthy and you have little to no production out of your running back room I don't care what conference you're playing in that's not a recipe for Success right that's going to go badly regardless of the conference however all of those things that I just said happened to South Carolina last season oh and they play in the SEC right and they play in the toughest conference and football it is what it is it's the reality of it yeah you've got to get better yeah you've got to improve yeah you have to somehow use what you have coming in through the portal and the recruiting classes like Shane Beamer talked about and use that and leverage it and do what Lamont Baris did last year but at the end of the day we can't ignore the fact that South Carolina has been and always will be in a very tough spot they're not in the ACC and I know to the textur point they went 0 and2 against the ACC last year I get that they weren't good last year coach Beamer I think would admit that but you go through the grind week to week of the SEC and it it adds up it adds up madcraft chimes in on the YouTube stream madcraft says hate to be that guy again but you can't brag about being in the big bad SEC but then complain when you get slaughtered by a difficult schedule I understand your point madcraft but it's just it's just the reality of it I've said reality like five times in the last five minutes the SEC is a strange lady and it it makes you hit that reality that wall of reality very very quickly it makes you come to reality very very quickly right davo Sweeney and Clemson because they're in the conference that they're in reality sometimes comes gradually for Clemson for other teams outside of the SEC you don't just slide off off of the mountain completely you start to slide you slide a little bit more and you slide a little bit more you still win here and there you still take a few steps forward but in the SEC you're not fortunate with that aspect of it there's a wall it's no slide there's no downhill skid when you don't have a good football team in the Southeastern Conference there's no slope there's no skid downhill it's a brick wall and that's what I'm trying to help you understand madcraft like I'm not saying that they can use it as an excuse but I don't know that anyone who brags about being in the SEC and I know fans are going to be fans listen we all know that but when you talk about bragging about being in the SEC if you're a lower tier team that hasn't been relevant when it comes to the conference and winning the conference who do you hear bragging about it who do you hear Do you hear Gamecock fans bragging oh I'm so glad that we're in the SEC I'm so glad that we only have a chance to win one to two conference games a year I love it I absolutely just love it I understand that fans are going to be fans and the SEC chant gets thrown around I get that I'm not saying that but what I'm telling you is deep down nobody's excited about playing Georgia and then the next week play in Alabama and then the next week turning around and play in Tennessee the fans May chant SEC SEC but at the end of the day deep deep down I don't think any lower tier team in the Southeastern Conference wakes up giddy and wakes up excited because they get to go get Molly whopped by the Georgia Bulldogs I could be wrong I just don't think so all right let's see back to the conversation on the stream you can join the stream 128 people in the Stream right now Facebook Twitter and YouTube is where you can find us right here on the fan Upstate mad says at some point you have to get past this talking point and start winning SEC games the schedule's very difficult every year yes it is but you also have to look at it all I'm asking you to do madcraft is look at it from the standpoint of South Carolina football other than the threeyear spur or 11 games has never been a school that's been able to do that consistently I just don't know that we fully understand how hard it is to win in the SEC at South Carolina because they're not looked at as an SEC program that is even somewhat close to a contender I'm just saying let's be unbiased let's be fair and understand that South Carolina again again outside of those three Spurrier years where he won 11 they've never consistently seen success so yes can we be critical of Shane Beamer at times sure every coach at some point deserves criticism right nobody's beyond that but all I'm telling you is sometimes we have to look at all of reality and not just circle the talking points that fit our agenda and fit our narrative sometimes we have to look at the entire puzzle and realize that look they are where they are yes they're JV us to still win games yes but if it was easy to do there'd be coaches lining up at raay Tanner's door and to my knowledge there's not not at least with a football program Brandon Bernett says on the YouTube stream I want to know is Shane was upset to seen on your screen a Clemson Paul but nothing Carolina oh you're asking was he upset to see a Clemson Paul on my screen do you think he oh you're talking about this one right I can't even find it now right here I'm in the wrong there you go right there I don't even know if he saw it or not my uh my left shoulder is covering the Clemson Paul all right we've got a run we'll get to our daily wies on the other side we'll continue the South Carolina Gamecock conversation fascinating interview with Shane Beamer again appreciate him Steve Fink everyone for lining that interview up and we will have it again for you in the six o'clock hour in case you missed it daily wires headlines next [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] it's a segment we call the daily wires getting you up to date on what's going on in the Sports World a ton to get to on this Friday the weekend Oh So Close good to be with you I'm Cole Bryson Diesel's on vacation he will be back next week and man I don't know if you know this or not this is our last weekend without college football did you know that did you realize that next Saturday we have Georgia Tech Florida State and Dublin Ireland are you kidding me I've never been excited about a game in Dublin Ireland before but sign me up right college football one week from all season long right here on the fan upsate but getting you up to date on what's going on in the Sports World our daily wires the Atlanta Braves were unable to complete the sweep in San Francisco go as they lost game four 6 to Zer yesterday afternoon still took three of four so not a bad uh West Coast trip for the Atlanta Braves that continues because the Atlanta Braves are staying on the west coast this weekend they play the Angels 9:38 tonight Spencer swellen bot gets the start for the braavos tonight against Jose Sorano for the Angels hopefully the Braves can get back back in the win column Weston Wilson becomes the first Phillies rookie to hit for the cycle that happened last night pretty cool scene there for Weston Wilson and then um also I saw this right when we signed off air yesterday or maybe right before we signed off on the fan Upstate ESPN made two layoffs yesterday Robert Griffin II and NFL Countdown host Sam Ponder has been cut from the sports network so what are your thoughts on RG3 and Sam Ponder being cut I liked Sam Ponder I didn't watch um NFL Countdown enough I mean I watched it but obviously it feels like we heard and saw RG3 a lot more doesn't it now on RG3 I loved his personality I thought he I thought he brought a very Dynamic element to his coverage of college football I did see though that there were a lot of people who just weren't a a big fan of his commentary during games I know he was a little bit more on the loose lip side right and in a good way I thought like he uh he just made the games fun he made the broadcast fun and he was a a very interesting commentator in the booth for ESPN he wasn't my favorite ESPN college football analyst but he did a lot of fun bits like when he ran down the hill with dbo interviewing him uh coming off of the Hill uh really fascinated really surprised is a better word I think by that firing from ESPN letting go of RG3 and Sam Ponder texter says Cole did you hear Rob Brown's conspiracy about their firing no I did not enlighten me texter Rob Brown has a conspiracy theory on the firing of Sam Ponder and RG3 I did not know that I was unaware but I guess I have to do my homework now and find out what that conspiracy is text or enlighten me from the 262 appreciate you being a part of the program today for the second straight day the Atlanta Falcons made a big splash yesterday this came out uh sources indicated just how serious the Falcons are about contention in 2024 the Falcons signed free agent safety Justin Simmons a two-time Pro Bowl selection to a one-year $8 million contract on Thursday athletes first which represents Simmon uh which represents Simmons excuse me announced on Thursday he will join fellow Pro Bowl selection Jesse Bates the third to form one of the best safety combinations in the NFL so Atlanta loading up on the defensive side of the football and now all of a sudden isn't it interesting is isn't it crazy how the narratives have changed with the Atlanta Falcons because in April when Atlanta um took Michael penck in the draft right after signing Kurt Cousins everybody and I mean everybody gave Atlanta a lot of uh gave gave Atlanta a lot of negative opinions said bad things about The Pick of Michael Pinnock said that said that it was frankly a bad pick and just a lot of negativity around the Atlanta dra uh Atlanta's draft and now all of a sudden here we are a few months later in August they've gotten two defensive players including Matthew judon and Justin Simmons yesterday and all of a sudden now the narrative has changed that the narrative has shifted from oh wow look at the Atlanta Falcons they've loaded up defensively and have Michael pinnick but just a few months ago everybody was criticizing Atlanta for taking Michael pinnick when they just signed Kurt Cousins that's what's interesting that is interesting to me um let's see the bills linebacker Matt Milano out indefinitely with torn biceps two more daily wires for you NASCAR Sprint Cup will be in Brooklyn Michigan this weekend for the fir Keepers Casino 400 Denny Hamlin is favored to win the race on Sunday if you keep up with any kind of Statistics um it seems as if Denny Hamlin's favored to win every single race maybe it's just me and then lastly FedEx St Jude Championship underway right now in Memphis let's see who's at the leaderboard at the top of the leaderboard if you will uh Denny McCarthy is tied for first with someone from Japan whose name I can't pronounce atam 11 under so I'm not going to try to pronounce it Scotty sheffler fourth right now nine under Justin Rose tied for fifth he is at eight under so imagine that Scotty sheffler on a Friday is right where he needs to be for a perfect weekend and a perfect setup to go on a run and win the whole shebang man he's just playing such good golf right now such good golf appreciate you being a part of the program I'm Bryson hour number two coming up right here on the fan of State [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] how many teams in 2024 do you believe have a legit shot at the playoffs I find it really intriguing when you look at the expanded playoff this year I want to know how many teams actually have a shot versus how many teams feel like they have a shot what do I mean by that well I'll tell you when it was a four team playoff in my mind there were probably like 10 teams that thought they could make it right maybe 15 but I would say it was more like 10 to 12 teams during that fouram uh during the four team playoff that felt like they had a legitimate shot of getting in now you make it 12 and I would say and again I want to hear from you the toos if you agree or disagree here 713 07 start your text word fan I would say there are probably somewhere in the ballpark of 30 35 teams that feel like they can make it now and again I'm not telling you I think there are 35 teams that can make the college football what I'm saying is let's go for example to the AP poll in a uh Iowa who's at 25 I'm not telling you that I think Iowa has a legitimate shot to make it but what I am saying is when it was a four team playoff in my mind they were probably 10 to 12 teams that believe they can actually make it now I know you'll tell me Cole everybody's goal at the beginning of the season is to make the playoffs right yeah that's everybody's goal but week one comes along and then it becomes less of a goal right and then week two comes along and you're one and one week three you're one- two so on and so forth the question is though now that it's a 12 team playoff don't you feel like there's probably 30 35 teams out there that actually feel like they have a shot to make it because if you look at the ap25 I would say everybody in the top 25 does feel like they have a shot Iowa Big 10 25 NC State in the ACC at 24 you can't convince me that Dave Doran and NC State staff you can't convince me that right now going into the season they don't feel like they have a shot at the playoff I think they certainly do I think they certainly do feel as if they have a shot do I think in reality they are going to make the playoff maybe not but what I'm telling you is and I asked Shane Beamer that question to start the show I asked him if he and his staff felt this new excitement and felt this new potential of getting into this expended playoffs and they're not in the top 25 and Shane Beamer said yeah our players feel it so if a team like South Carolina feels it down a little bit in the polls wouldn't you think that the teams that are I don't know 20 to 30 maybe even 35 certainly feel like they have a legitimate shot of getting in if things go right this season if the ball bounces the right way if if they stay healthy and right that's the beauty of football that's the beauty of college football any level high school college or Pro you've got to be really talented you've got to have the ball bounce your way you've got to stay healthy and you've got to be 99% of the time the better team that night right or that day a lot of people tell you oh like's not a part of the game BS tell you right now BS on that luck is 100% aart 100 my in my opinion 100% aart of the game I'm not saying you get lucky and find yourself in the 12 team playoff I'm telling you go ask a coach who's won a high school state championship or won a national championship or won a Super Bowl go ask any coach who's won at the highest level and they'll tell you without a shadow of a doubt you got to have the ball bounce your way there are plays along the way during the season that just happen to fall your way go look at any college football national champion and you'll see that I've seen it time and a time again excuse me so how many teams have a legit shot this year versus how many feel like to have a legit shot I'll tell you while I think they're are probably 30 to 35 that feel like they have a legitimate shot there are probably definitely less than 20 that have a shot but no more than I'd say it's somewhere right around 20 because A&M at 20 I think they're a little highly I think they're a little too high in the polls for me in the ap&m may feel like they have a leg legitimate shot to make the playoff but in my mind A&M doesn't have a shot to make the playoff now you go one spot down to Miami at 19 and as I told you yesterday when I made my college football predictions I do think Miami does I think Miami gets in so a team who's preseason ranked 19th in the country and opens up August 31st at Florida I think even the 19th best team in the country right now has a very legitimate shot of actually making the playoff now I know Miami the players and the coaches inside that building there is no doubt in my mind they feel like they're a playoff team right now a lot of teams do Kansas State Big 12 think there's a legitimate shot when you talk about the 18th best team in the country Kansas State Oklahoma State could be a threat to Utah if the ball doesn't bounce Utah's way if Utah has a few critical injuries or just doesn't play well in a few games you're talking about Oklahoma State or Kansas State winning the conference right and those guys are at 171 18 in the AP pole they obviously going into the season feel like if they can secure their conference they're obviously in but they probably even feel like if they can just come up just a little bit short and I mean a little bit short as long as they don't have uh two really bad losses on their schedule Kansas State Oklahoma State as a runner up might feel like they have a good enough resume to get in Oklahoma and the SEC at 16 Tennessee at SEC uh in the SEC at 15 those are two very interesting ones same conference I think they both have a shot however when you look at their schedule especially in Oklahoma's case first year in the secc there's going to be some learning curves I don't know if those are playoff teams in my mind but my point is right around that 15 16 spot they absolutely feel as if they're a contender to get in and with the new expansion with teams now being able to make a run at the 12 team playoff everybody at the beginning of the season has a feeling of belief that frankly I don't think they've ever had before you go back to the college football playoff when it was a four team playoff the 17th and 18th and even 16th and 19th and 20th best team of the country they knew deep down they w a playoff team right am I saying these teams will be in the final four no you still got to win games in the playoff everybody knows that but what I'm saying is when you look at the teams and the amount of teams now that have this feeling of belief that they can possibly get in that's why this is the most anticipated college football season ever that's why there's more excitement about this season than ever now will that excitement die down over time maybe so will we be will we as college football fans get more and more used to an expanded playoff absolutely we will so maybe our excitement will never be what it is this year but I do believe 2024 is a very unique season in the sense of I don't know that we'll ever be back here I don't know that will ever have this same sense of excitement and anticipation that that we have this year because once you open up the playoff there's no going back right there's no going back and the playoff will now in my mind for college football it'll stay expanded and and we know we've heard talks that it's going to expand even more very very soon to a 16 type playoff let's go to the text line 71307 start your text with the word fan texter says what team outside of the top 25 has the best chance to get in well that's a good question texter I have thought about that myself outside of the top 25 the best chance to get in I would I'm not I'm not a math guy I'm not looking at percentages in front of me right now but I'll tell you this any team 25 up the percentages if you go find it somewhere online their percentages their chances of making the college football playoff their odds according to Vegas I would think are very very very very low some maybe even a point I'm not going to go that far but they're very low like for example West Virginia 26 Virginia Tech 27 we're talking about 20 2 6 through 30 here West Virginia 26 Virginia Tech 27 Iowa 28 Iowa State 29 and Liberty 30 I have now switched over to Athlon Sports rankings because I have a um document here of Athlon Sports rankings all the way up to 134 so it's not the AP poll but these are Athlon Sports rankings this is the college football Athlon Sports magazine that has a preview of all 34 FBS teams so if you looked at that 26 through3 the only team in that 26 through 30 in my mind that has a legitimate shot of making it's liberty right Liberty would be the highest ranked G5 conference Champion right I believe I'm saying that right because yesterday I told you in my playoff predictions I have Boise State getting in as the highest ranked G5 conference Champion but Liberty who starts the season ranked 30th they're the only team in my mind 25 and up that have a legitimate shot of making it there's no way you can convince me that a West Virginia or Virginia Tech Iowa Iowa State SMU who I think will be a good team this year but first year in the ACC Auburn Nebraska Wisconsin Florida at 35 no you can't convince me Boise State 36 according to Athlon sports that's who I have getting in as that highest ranked G5 conference champ but no Memphis Kentucky App State South Carolina that's where South Carolina is according to Athlon Sports is 40 the reality of it to answer your question texter from the 993 25 and up the only chance someone has of getting in is if they are the highest ranked G5 Champion a a liberty or a Boise State uh let's see texure says I'd say Florida because of their schedule to answer this the first question that I just asked if they're better than advertised they could lose three games and still make the college football playoff no way no way Jose no way completely disagree with you there texture Florida ain't winning three game or excuse me Florida is not in a situation where they can lose three games and get in and they pull up their schedule I I again I'm not looking at it yet but I don't think that off the bat I agree with you the games that could challenge them Miami they're going to lose that game in my opinion Samford A&M Mississippi State so through the first four who knows what Florida does there's a chance Florida's two and two through the first four then they have a buy UCF Tennessee they'll probably lose to Tennessee at neand Kentucky and then here's where it gets fun are you kidding me texer have you looked at Florida's schedule I know we talked about it several months back but after you oh my gosh this is brutal listen to this Florida Gators after you get through Miami Sanford A&M Mississippi State UCF Tennessee and Kentucky which by the way I could see three losses there already for the Gators then welcome to the SEC Georgia Texas LSU oh miss Florida State five freaking weeks in a row number one number four number 13 number six and number 10 yeah good luck right good luck texter there's no way and you know where Florida NS the college football playoff no way in you know they're not it's not happening it's not happening they're SC they they could lose realistically let me let me pull it back up they could lose to Miami they could lose to A&M they could lose to Tennessee that's three then they will lose to Georgia that's four they will lose to Texas that's five they will lose to LSU that's six I think they'll lose to Old Miss that's seven they could lose to Old Miss or excuse me Florida State to end the season that's eight you realize that this could be a horrific season for Florida if they're not any good now I don't think they'll have eight losses but they could they could that means they' have wins over Samford Mississippi State UCF and Kentucky 4 and eight that's a reality for the Florida Gators again going back to my point that we had the conversation we had after we got off the line with Shane Beamer welcome to the SEC I know Florida's been in the SEC for a long time but nothing compares I I if you if you don't understand my point about the SEC take Florida's schedule for example Nothing Compares no other conference schedule no other schedule in America compares to the SEC Florida is a per perfect example 1 2 3 four five 6 7even eight again eight teams on the gator schedule in 24 that are ranked in the preseason top 25 in the AP pole that's tough that's tough text from the 615 chimes in on the conversation and says it would be nice to see the accn s play nine conference games like the big 12 and Big 10 if they didn't or if they did do that half of each conference would have an extra loss yeah you know texer to be quite Frank I'm surprised that hasn't happened already I'm surprised we don't see that now I think you and a lot of other people would push for that I think there's a lot of people out there who would like to see n conference games for the ACC and the SEC to your point to your point good conversation though 71307 start your text with the word fan that's the way you can chime in hey save that number in your phone if you haven't done so already create the contact fan Upstate 71307 and when you text the show make sure you start your text with the word fan Shane says where's Auburn on that ranking which one the Athlon Sports thought I said auburn didn't I let me go back Shane just for you 32 I didn't you're right they were 32 SMU 31 Auburn 32 to answer your question Wesley says go Flames outstanding coaching staff for now Wesley for now until somebody says you know what we need to hire a good coach let's go hire Jamie Chadwell and that will happen soon Shane says does Florida have the hardest schedule in the country uh Shane the sky blue because I'd say Yeah by far unless unless you can find me one that's harder or more difficult I don't know that you can I think they do absolutely have the toughest schedule in the country there's no doubt about that right it's brutal all right Shane conik our weekly 420 guest talking NASCAR he will join the show right here on the fan upstate [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] it is another edition of wi wire hour number two of the program so good to be with you I'm Cole Bryson diesels on vacation and we'll be back next week just FYI as we get our NASCAR conversation rolling with the man the myth the legend the second Shane on the program today he is Shane conik of the Charlotte Observer what's up buddy what's up Cole great to great to be here again and what a week we had we ended up having a winner and he's still a winner but a lot more happen S A lot has happened this week in the NASCAR world you're exactly right about that but we've got to start with what happened on Sunday Shane as you know I texted you there were some fireworks H in last Sunday's race and no they weren't shot out of a Canon Joey Lano exact words he's a piece of crap he sucks he sucked his whole career who's he talking about he's talking about Sunday's winner Austin Dylan a late finish on the East Coast as Austin Dylan Rex shop to win on Sunday your thoughts Shane yeah Joey Lano said something else in there you didn't mentioned one of the other sound bites from loano kind of one of the M very much replayed ones but it Joey lagano story that wasn't talked about in the moment as much but ended up being another huge part of that penalty report was that after Austin Dylan came up in his number three car and turned legano around got into Denny Hamlin and wrecked his way to Victory the Joey lagano was so frustrated that he came on to Pit Road and just ran in his car down at families and reporters and everybody's running out on Pit Road a hot Pit Road Logano just flew and it wasn't the most dangerous of settings but it spared a interesting conversation this week because every sport NASCAR gives you access that no other sport gives you and letting you get that close but at a certain point it is dangerous that you have these cars going so fast and just all coming in to park in the same place at the end of such an eventful race like that so legano ended up getting find $50,000 himself which I think is interesting because Dylan the only real the main penalty of Dylan is that the number three team is not eligible for the playoffs but he keeps his win was not fined and then legano ended up getting hit with a fine that was almost as much as Stenhouse got for clock and Kyle bus you know it's fascinating you're exactly right the sport of NASCAR does offer a a very very interesting Viewpoint for people like you Shane but I'll tell you this if Shane conik goes down because of a Mad driver I'm going to show up upset about it do you think the Joey's uh Joey's response Shane I know listen the world we live in the reality of it is it's always the one who throws the second punch right who gets in trouble and really even though Dylan had that playoff win removed Joey was the one that was fined I know you can't say oh well Joey deserved do that however I'd be pretty upset in that situation too right oh absolutely and I think it's one of those situations where it just becomes old school racing and you got to make a decision in the moment the rules of the sport allow for Austin villain to technically be permitted to just go on up and W the checker flag is right in front of him he could see it and he sees two cars in front of him and he just took them both out and you can argue a different driver maybe they do something differently and it doesn't matter because that's what happened Richard childress's driver who drives the three decides to come up and wreck two cars and win the race so Joey Lano is also entitled to act how he wants to and then it's on NASCAR to really set the precedent and that's what this week kind of the big discussion was and why it took NASCAR until Wednesday afternoon to announce its decision because it's not just about how do we penalize Austin Dylan and Joey Logano and moment because this situation is going to set a precedence it absolutely will and it's quite fascinating uh when you look at everything that happened on Sunday let's talk about Austin Dylan's Champion or uh chance to the championship through the playoff being removed by NASCAR do you think that was the right move I do because they had to do something and and it feels like that is the move that sends the message that that move's not because like it is let's say that Austin Dylan were already in the playoffs or he were he already was toward the top in points it's a different situation when a guy is in 302 and is trying to win the race because the playoff system is such that you win and you're in you think back earlier this year let's say Daniel Suarez didn't end up winning that race in Atlanta he might still be above the cut line but he would probably be in a much different situation than just having been locked into the playoffs since the beginning of the year if Austin Dylan happened to get a win earlier in the it's a completely different situation at the end of this race so I do think that Dylan wasn't just trying to win it was part of the motive that you win you quickly get in and and that makes every driver every race want to come in first that much more but then you run in that situation that what if you're a guy like Chris Bucher and and other drivers who might sacrifice some wins to try and get more points someday no it's fascinating you're exactly right uh Shane conik joining us Shane is with the Charlotte Observer covers ascar and a lot of other sports does a fantastic job how about the news that broke earlier today Shane about race car driver Scott Bloomquist who died in a plane accident and uh from what I've been told Scott Bloomquist on the dirt track circuit was well known 60 years old he was the pilot of and uh pilot and only occupant of the plane happened uh let's see in Hawkins County and just a terrible terrible accident today yeah absolutely was Scott Bloomquist a legend on the dirt tracks widely regarded as one of if not the greatest dirt track stock car racer of all time all kinds of accolades including winning the World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion back in' 04 three-time dirt series uh champion in Lucas Oil in Indie you've had just almost every accomplishment in the dirt track circuit to Scott Bloomquist and today that shocking news at 60 years old in its hometown of H morberg Tennessee it was and I'm just just shocking news today definitely not good news so uh thoughts and prayers with his family uh in this tragic event again he was 60 years old and uh he was flying and the only person on the plane before we move on to the fire Keepers Casino 400 what did I miss de during the week it was a very busy week but what have I in your mind Shane conik failed to mention in the NASCAR world yeah so the big story is the Austin Dyan situation and we've going over that but but another aspect of of the whole thing I think is if you are Richard childrenis racing and something like this happen clearly there was video in the moment of Austin villain spotter audibly saying wreck him wck him as he was approaching Joey loano afterward in the media center Mr chis just said don't believe everything you hear on the internet about that and then Matt Weaver I think it was of sports not just showed him the clip on his phone and childrenis just said oh well we're trying to do everything we gotta do to win basically so that was another kind of part of the whole thing and I think it it leads to that bigger picture thought right when the penalties come out that is how do you feel about this at your RC are because that statement that Chris eventually said that everyone was saying in the moment Sunday night which is you're doing everything you got to do to race for a win under this current system and so that's exactly what they did and then when a penalty like this comes out what RCR did was put out a statement on social media pretty quickly that they were so disappointed and are ready to appeal at all so we'll see how that appeal goes they were Elton Sawyer said he was anticipating an appeal very much but if you're kis you actually deserve you get that appeal because it's probably not going to necessarily work and we talked about how it does make sense that this was the ruling but for the same reasons that legano should feel how he feel and he's entitled to feel that way I do believe that RCR is entitled to not like anything about NASCAR's ruling in hindsight because it did everything it had to do to put itself in position to win the race you can follow him on Twitter do yourselves a favor if you are a fan of NASCAR shanore conic that's Co NN uck Shane we uh it's hard to believe but we are three races we have rather three races remaining in the regular season I guess we can call it before the round of 16 begins on September the8th as you look back with only three races remaining before the playoffs what has Sur surprised you what surprised Shane conik the most that's happened thus far in 2024 the parody really has not particularly surprised me I anticipated after last year when you had the youngest Championship four of all time for the second straight year William Byron is emerging as a star Kyle Larson can win multiple races every single year Denny Hamlin is as much of a threat as he's ever been it felt like this sport had a lot of parody and going into this year we could see different race winners week in and week out while having about eight or nine who you know are clearly the better drivers in the sport and I think that what we've seen this year has been increased competition we've seen just more aggressive racing later on in some settings but then we've also seen instances where the Kyle Larson and Denny hamlins and even Christopher Bell this year find their ways to Victory Lane in a race where it doesn't necessarily seem like they had the fastest car so I'd say this year it's really been the unpredictability because yes for a year where Kyle lson has four wins and Denny Christopher Bell William Byron all got three the reigning Series champion Ry Ryan blay has two it feels like Tyler reick has been one of the best drivers all year same thing we said for Chase Elliott they sit second and third in the points but as I'm saying they only have one win win to their name doesn't matter you need a win and can't get in and that's how the system works but I would say it's just that you are having the racing get even more competitive and not in the sense that one guy runs away and wins seven races and then everybody else is just trying to get in the playoffs you have a solid five six seven even seven drivers this year who Head and Shoulders above and then kind of a next group of guys one win or so and then it just already Austin villan almost threw himself into that group and we have Austin cnrc and Daniel Suarez locked into the playoffs so this year has had its share of unpredictability this Sunday August 18th Shane the FireKeepers Casino 400 in Brooklyn Michigan uh one that I was not very familiar with before I did a little research on it earlier again only three remaining in the regular season but in your mind what stands out about Sunday's race in Mich at this point we are getting later and later with that playoff cutline and when you look at guys like Chris busher his race is so important for a driver like that and yeah he's had success at Michigan especially last year when he was putting together his three wins and the final five races to roll into the playoffs and then put together a Deep Run for the 17 of his own I think that Chris busher can very well put himself in a position to get to Victory Lane at Michigan at Richmond it felt like he could repeat what he did last year at Richmond at this point in the season he had another strong run in a lot of ways but I think that at Michigan it's gonna be Mr bucher's time is there any added pressure in your mind Shane with these teams performing so close to I would assume most of their respected manufacturers in Detroit is that a real thing or no I mean true I mean motor they're GNA be up by Motor City every time they go to any state in any part of the country there's a lot that is kind of exciting about it and being up at Michigan International Speedway a home race for Brad kazlowski I think that yes definitely not just Ford but I believe Chevrolet up there as well you know it's funny you mention Brad keslowski I agree with you I think he's got a good shot but you know uh it seems like every week and I can be wrong on this but when you look at the Vegas odds for every weekend's race just like this week it seems like Vegas has Denny Hamlin as the favorite week in and week out you got Hamlin and lson the top almost every time I mean and I and I think it's it is reasonable because plenty of times Hamlin Andor lson may end up having the fastest car or really seeming like that's who's gonna or and then Christopher Bell might be the one over Hamlin sometimes Phil especially now I think we're getting into the part of the Season where it's less likely that guys like Hamlin are going to get wins because he already has three of them and just the strategy when you think about how much is going to happen you think about how likely it is that cautions come out down the stretch and you get later into these races that if you're a driver who's already solidified in the playoffs I could see those drivers really acting differently strategically wise and potentially getting other drivers in a Victory Lane Shane I have yet to ask you this this year uh at least to my knowledge but as we're winding down now getting closer and closer to the end of the NASCAR season who does Shane conik like as the odds on favorite to be claimed as this year's Champion it's Denny's year it's happening Denny Hamlin has this year last year it felt like it was his one of the best chances he's had in years at the same time he's starting to get older starting to really become one of the top oldest drivers of the sport but something about this year taking that momentum had from being a top driver all the way until Martinsville the end of the round of 80 year ago it has felt this entire year like Denny has as good of a shot as he's ever had in his career regardless of how things go but it just feels like week in week out he is performing the best he has ever had appreciate you man great stuff as always but before I let you go um I'm gonna ask you this the next few weeks as we get closer and closer to the end of the MLB season your New York Mets are they going to make a push or no oh no it's over it's over the past week losing the A's it's it's gone we got to enjoy the Grimace we got our fun moments but Baro cologne is in Charlotte tonight at the nights game down at truest field isn't he like 90 yeah I mean God and and hasn't he played for like 44 teams in the MLB even though there's not that many teams fantastic stuff man appreciate you we'll talk to you next week appreciate you Cole can't wait to talk to you guys next week absolutely absolutely that is Shane conik reporter for the Charlotte Observer who covers NASCAR and does a terrific job doing so really good job and he's a meds fan so that makes it fun as long as uh we can uh give him a little grief for that unfortunately as a Braves fan you know there's not a lot we can say this season Braves back in Action tonight we'll get back to that what is the one game this fall is the question that I have for you that you would like to attend so here's the question pay attention now you can only attend one it can be college or Pro and it's a free ticket for you it cannot be playoffs though so you can't say college football playoff or Natty or Super Bowl or NFL playoffs the one game this fall that you would pick to attend it's free you don't have to worry about cost which game in your mind would be the absolute best to go to in 2024 that's the question I ask you go ahead and get your thoughts in on the text line 71307 start your text with the word fan we will get to that and get your thoughts right here on the fan upstate [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] w [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] w [Music] [Music] h [Music] [Music] w [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I asked a question before the break the responses are already coming in on the program 71307 is the way you can text the show if you just tuned in and are asking what question did you ask well I asked you this fall and to William Brady's point on the Facebook I didn't clarify that it had to be football so he went Braves Dodgers and I'll get to that in a second but the question was this fall if you could pick one game to attend couldn't be a postseason game College Pro the tickets paid for only one and again it can't be anything in the college football playoff anything in the NFL playoffs can't be Natty can't be Super Bowl what would the one game be there's already a text that has come in on the text line that I think uh I think that's my answer I think it's my answer as well there's a lot of good games this fall let's start on the stream uh let's see JV says I think the texter was saying if Florida goes 9 and three with that Gauntlet scheduled they should be in the playoffs they're not winning that many that's just what the question was oh I'm sorry if I if I uh interpreted that text wrong I apologize I do do that do do I do that from time to time William on the Facebook stream says Braves versus Dodgers got to see Otani live hit a base 08 football my bad Notre Dame and FSU really Notre Dame has a pre-week schedule this year as compared to years past but that should be a dog fight so Notre Dame to answer your question or to to to comment back to reply to your comment William on the Facebook stream Notre Dame is a place that obviously I like to go right it's a it's a beautiful setting it's a historic venue and uh I believe Notre Dame should be on everyone's college football bucket list Florida State Notre Dame though uh you know unless you're a Florida State fan uh I probably would choose another another Notre Dame game but then again I'm assuming that game's at Notre Dame right it would make sense Shane Barrett says the Iron Bowl oh so I don't I don't hate that answer Shane my only response would be I wouldn't choose the Iron Bowl this year I'd hold off a little while on the Iron Bowl and I'll tell you why if I see the iron bolt I want to see it when both are at their best and I know that that's that might be a really long time until Auburn's back to being a perennial power but man I want to see him when something's on the line right Alburn I don't think is going to be all that good of a football team in 2024 it still be it's be a fantastic game to your point I just don't know that it'd be the game I choose this season all right uh let's see Shane says Notre Dame Stadium's great JB says I know Georgia will kill Florida I've just always wanted to go to the world's largest outdoor cocktail party no doubt no doubt growing up it was like oh man that just sounds amazing right but I don't know if they call it that anymore do they they should always call it that but you're right that would be a bucket list going to that one as as well all right to the text line uh text are from the 256 says Georgia Texas would be the one game he would like to attend this fall if it were a free trip regular season only though was the kicker there Georgia Texas yeah that one would be uh that one would be up there texter it really would I still have one that I think I'd like to see more but that would make my top three maybe two without a doubt back to the text line 615 says Buckey at ducks that is also my birthday here's the one that I think I'd like to see here's the one I like to see this season now I would rather it be at Ohio State if I'm going to get to go for free I think Oregon's still a fantastic environment however if I'm getting to go for free I think I'd rather go win the games at Ohio State right wouldn't you wouldn't you but still Dexter I think I agree with you Ohio State Oregon this fall man that for me would absolutely be up there uh Eric chimes in on the text line says e AES versus cowgirls Eagles winning of course man Eric that one hurts that one hurts Eric you know me as a Cowboys fan you're probably right it's probably going to happen this year but that one does hurt a little bit and then the last text we'll get to for now 680 says Army Navy home game Grandpa Bucky Army Navy oh I'm sorry let me back up I read that text wrong I thought it said Army Navy it says any navy home game any navy home game not Army Navy any home game any Navy home game uh for sure but man wouldn't you put Army Navy up there as well wouldn't you put that one up there Army Navy paid for regular season this fall 2011 says the Texans at my Jags in Jacksonville that would be a good one if you're a Jags fan you know texter the uh the upstate Jacksonville Jaguars fan there's Jacksonville is not that far I mean you really I think you can get there in like six hours so it's not that bad of a drive to Jacksonville all right coming up next the segment that I look forward to every single time we do it we have not done this segment in a very long time I'll tell you that but it's the best audio of the week we have six clips you will help me rank which one is worst and which one is best it's the best audio of the week next a [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] play coming back in five one of my favorite segments to do each and every time it's been a while since we've done best audio of the week but I'm bringing it back I even look this morning I mean it's been a couple of months since we've done best audio of the week it's your chance to help me decide of the six clips that we have which ranks first and which ranks last I'm Cole Bryson good to be with you on wire to wire on this Friday too Friday edition of wi wire 200 people in the Stream as we speak right now Twitter Facebook and YouTube that's where you can get in not just listen to the show but watch the show we're also live on 971 sparenberg 977 Greenville anywhere in the world on the free Odyssey app yep that's right so many ways to listen to The Fan Upstate to watch our shows not only wirewire but the ra Brown show every morning 6:00 to 10: which you should check out if you haven't done so already I believe most of our tolos have and do watch and listen to Rob Brown and Lonzo but so many ways and if you miss something you go back on the Odyssey app it's the rewine feature so let's get into it I have six audio clips here for you we decide which one's the best we decide which one's the worst we are going to start with cut number six preseason is not what it used to be is to see if young guys once the lights go on and the pads go on and the tackling happens if they can if they can show up or if they don't kind of more from from from the perspective of you know it's been obviously a year now you got some new offensive line you know guys just just for you to have a some whether it's a series or two for examp yeah I'm not worried about preseason is it's not real football pre-season is not real football did you hear that I'm gonna type it in on my uh rundown just so I won't forget it pre-season is not real football the reason I included this clip on the audio of the week is because I heard Aaron roders talking about about the preseason not being real football and I found myself at a verdict because as we talked about several times we all know that when it comes to preseason and especially with the Carolina Panthers and Bryce young Diesel and I last week disagreed um when it came to Bryce young diesel said he should play I said first game no need to you still have two more to go um I just don't know that I can go out there on a limb and say it's not real footb because Aaron Rogers said it it's a chance for young guys to go out and prove themselves by playing real football those young guys Aaron uh a Aon may not have another chance or another shot to do that they may not have another opportunity to prove themselves so when I hear him say preseason is not real football I've always said look you don't take a pre-season game and overreact you don't watch a pre-season game and have a bunch of kneejerk reactions right but you can't tell those young guys that it's not real football can you because they're fighting to make a roster they're fighting for their dreams that they've for a very long long time have worked very hard at to come true um and you know I I think uh I think about it from a local perspective we had niji Thompson Boiling Springs product who went to Georgia Southern and uh plays for the Minnesota Vikings we had him on the show not long ago and uh we you know we had this conversation with him he made the roster last year as a rookie and had a good rookie season as a specialist I just don't know that when you look at young guys who are trying to do something that's incredibly difficult it almost sounds to me it almost sounds a little arrogant from Aaron Rogers standpoint of oh it's not real football well eron it may not be for you you already have a job you're one of the best to ever do it but for a lot of people they're relying on this fake football you call it to maybe give them a shot at having a career in the NFL what do you say 7130 7 start your textt with the word fan madcraft on the YouTube stream chimes in and says it is real football to those players trying to make a roster spot 100% glad we agree on that madcraft all right that was clip number six so where do you rank that one put that one on the back burner toos and and and chew on it for just a few moments now let's go to let me look at my list here let's go to John daily talking about or giving some advice rather for amateur golfers the reason I found this fascinating was because I'm not a golf guy I'm not a golfer never have been hopefully one day I can be it take a lot of lessons but John Daly in uh his video with Bryce and D Shambo they tried to break 50 much like he did with Donald Trump a few weeks ago it was a great video with him and John Daly but uh this was a little golf excuse me a little golf advice when it came to grip for our uh audience that does play golf I found this fascinating this is clip three question yes all your clubs are exactly the same yep so 60° all the way to my five iron the irons are that is impressive so that's a 60 degree it's a little long big grips like me that's the biggest problem I always had with with bigger grips like this normally when they were first built whenever I grip it it squished and it like move I like but it's all about trying to teach amers how to play golf get fitted with your grip not your clubs y small the grip is if you put your hands on a grip and you take it back and there's a gap between your left arm and your right hand you're screwed that means you're not controlling the golf club so go get fitted for grips Nobody Does that nobody does Nobody Does it I think the bigger the grip is the better you're going to play yep agree grip it and rip it right that's one of the wire wire promos so I'm not a golf guy but I I found that really fascinating and I want to know from our toos out there who do play golf um because I know we have a lot of them what do you think about that what do you think about John Daly's advice on the grip on the club now I had to tell our producer being look it's John Daily Audio you never know one might fly that I missed I did check these beforehand but you know every now and then I do make a mistake and miss a a word that can't go out on FCC so with John Daly I had a teach bin where the but uh or the uh or remind bin rather where the dump button was just in case uh you never know with John Dy right so that's John Daly's advice for golf amateurs found it fascinating I have not heard much talked about when it comes to golf grip all right so that was cut three we've heard Aaron Rodgers we've now heard John Daly in his advice with grip for amaters let's see where do we go next I want to go to cut two this is a man man this one might be at the top just to let you know this is a man who was very upset about no one coming to his wedding and here is why all right T talk tell me if I'm tripping or not so me and my fiance we are getting married right and to be a part of our wedding you have to pay $450 for a ticket and that's for each guest so we invited friends and family to our wedding tell me why everybody that we invited has declined the invitation we already have spent 100 maybe almost close to $200,000 on the wedding we have already pre-ordered the cake we already put down a deposit for the venue um we've already got the wedding dress everything we pay for everything for the wedding DJ photographer everything for the wedding and what I don't understand is is that y'all spend 400 more money more money on stupid stuff but you can't come out to support your family and your friends at a wedding like tell me if I'm wrong tell it like is we wrong we like like like let me know let me know because y'all pay for tickets Beyonce tickets a $1 th000 tickets y'all going to go meet Chris Brown for a thousand something dollars but when it comes to your friends and your family you can't pay the ticket like these weddings ain't cheap like we like the weddings ain't cheap like like like what's going on like I don't get it like let us know are we wrong for charging for a wedding let us know are we wrong for charging for a wedding no bro nobody knows no one has a clue why why people haven't signed up and why people aren't coming to your wedding you say there's zero people who have rsvped ah wonder why there's when I watch this I said there's no way this can be real right there's no way this can be real man man upset about no one coming to his wedding well maybe the reason is cuz you're charging for fit a pop for people to come to your wedding I um you know I don't think that's the way it works there buddy so that one's good that one's funny uh madcraft says yeah I'll catch it on a zoom call or something brother you ain't sniffing 450 I don't know if he'd sniff 450 or sniff 45 or five I mean would you pay money any dollar amount of money to go to a wedding uh no not me and especially four well Beyonce tickets are that one's fantastic that one might be up there this one is Joe burrow on why he doesn't let his parents visit the day before a game I really like this one as well this is uh by the way the best audio of the week we're doing right here on wide to wire this is clip five why don't you let your parents come to your house on Saturday before the game while you're there that's that's game time that's that's a different once Saturday hits that's a different Joe now and like I love my parents and want to be present with them but when it's time to get ready for a game I might not be the most pleasant person to be around and I don't have a lot of myself to give to anybody else and so I want to go through my process I want to go through my thoughts I want to be alone with my thoughts and thinking about what I need to think about to go out and succeed on Sundays H so I like that a lot I like Joe bur mentality right when he's preparing for a game he says yeah I really don't even want to let my parents visit on a Saturday before the game it's going to be a different joke I'm not going to have much to give to them anything wrong with that in your opinion toos 71307 start your text with word fan anything wrong with a quarterback whether it be Joe burrow or anyone else saying no to family the day before a game because I'll tell you what I think I think he 110% has every right to say that yeah family is very important there's no denying that however Joe burrow is an NFL quarterback and there's a time in a place for everything and there's a time a place to see family and I'm the same way man I I I uh I don't blame him at all the day before a game to his point it's when you have to mentally check everything off that you have left to do make sure that you're in the right frame of mind it's very easy to get out of sorts to get out of whack to allow something to become a distraction right even if you're just in conversation with your parents I can see what he means there so uh you know I I appreciate him being honest about that because it's a very intriguing way of going about your weekend before an NFL game because I would imagine there's a lot of NFL players out there who the day before or the couple of days maybe a Friday Saturday leading up to a game they do have their family in town and maybe more than just their parents maybe some even uh even some extended family and I could see how that could become a distraction so very very interesting cornchip weighs in on the conversation and says if I'm expected to pay $450 for a wedding you're not getting the toaster off of the registry from me corn chip bam I like it coming in strong if you want me to pay for 50 for a wedding you're not even getting the toaster says cornchip I like it I like it a lot all right so we've heard uh the man upset about no one coming to his wedding we've heard John Daly's advice for amers which I was a fan of that one seemed like good golf advice I'm not a golfer but I asked you toos how you thought of that clip we heard Aaron roders on the preseason saying preseason is not real football ball and we've also heard Joe burrow on why he doesn't let his parents visit we have two left these two are pretty good clip four is where I'm going next this is uh John Daly after with Bryson D Shambo same tournament or same uh golf setting rather where him and Bryson are trying to break 50 uh the same exact day Bryson asked oh John how many beers have you had buddy how many good boys are you be today oh I started drinking at 9 this morning um might be the 20th I'm I slowed down if you have too many it can get ugly make it say and do some things you don't mean that's the thing six Rusty strings old five in a tip jaw make you move to Nashville chase your dreams not only an athlete but a singer eagle flying y'all eag flying H hard man so far man no laying up no holding back afraid of nothing it's a natural fact hit it long man Till It's Gone man keep Taking Chances living lives I hit it I hit it I hit it hard this a one-hander this is a one-hander right here boys no it's breaking more than that oh gosh dang smoked that one's going to be tough to top maybe 20 says John Daly when asked how many he's had who knows I've slowed down a little bit is there anything better than John Daly I mean that that one might not be your winner you might have another winner because there there's there's some good ones in here but I want to hear that one again clip four Bryson says how many have you had one more time B how many good boys are you deep today oh I started drinking at 9: this morning um might be the 20th I'm I slow down might be theth too many it can get ugly make it say and do some things you don't mean that's the thing six Rusty strings old five in a tip jaw make you move to Nashville chase your dreams not only an athlete but a singer eagle flying y'all eagle flying hit it hard man so far man no laying up no holding back afraid of nothing it's a natural fact hit it long man Till It's Gone man keep Taking Chances living Lodge I hit it I hit it I hit it hard this a one-hander this is a one-hander right here boys no it's breaking more than that oh go dang smoked can you imagine being on a golf course and you're playing you know you're you're up to the ninth or 10th turning the corner heading back you know on the back nine all of a sudden you hear that all of a sudden you hear John Daly behind you just belting it out maybe he's had one or two but again as madcraft says on the YouTube stream John Daly says maybe 20 who knows I've slowed down a little all right John Daly might be your winner but there's one more this one's U not as comical this one's Kirk herb Street fired up when asked in an interview about giving any Blanks on men and women competing in the opposite sport here's cut one like I'm done giving any at all about any of it I've been biting my tongue on a lot of topics for three years I sent a tweet out about something I happened to see somebody think he said should men be able to play in women's sports and I just was like I'm just gonna give a quick answer you know ridiculous question of course not I didn't realize it would be way more positive than negative I'm sure people are upset I think it's kind of a no-brainer no don't come on here and you had to know that when you put that tweet out there was gonna be a reaction I didn't give a though I don't really give all I'm done giving any at all about any of it it's almost like there are two different sets of rules if you have a view that's a little bit more traditional or I'm a Christian guy it's like there's a different set of rules it's hard to just turn the other cheek Time After Time After Time so yeah I didn't really care and I don't care at all woo Kirk coming in strong not giving any more blanks when it comes to men and women competing in the opposite sex sport guess what Kirk well done well done right well done well said I agree with you everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I am perfectly fine with you having an opinion nothing wrong with that nothing wrong with that but that was well said in my opinion by kurk when it comes to a travesty in my opinion seeing the opposite sex compete and the opposite sex sport he said it once he said it a thousand times during that interview he's done giving any blanks that one's good that was good so there's the six Aaron Rodgers preseason football is not real football Joe burrow not letting his parents hang out the day before the game um John Daly when asked how many beers deep he was his advice for amers was another cut a man upset about no one coming to his wedding and Kirk done giving any blanks any beeps those are the six I had them all for you some pretty good audio there what comes in first which one do you think is audio gold of the week text in 71307 start your text with the word fan 71307 couple of people on the stream already chiming in I see over out of the corner of my eye will find a winner on the other side as well as get into a little Clemson Georgia discussion all coming up right here on the fan upstate [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] w [Music] [Music] w [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] trying to decide which cut of audio comes in as the winner for the week we had six good candidates Aaron roders saying pre-season is not real football Joe burrow not letting his parents visit the day for a game John Daly with some golf advice for amers John Daly again asking or or being asked how many beers deep he was a man upset about no one coming to his wedding and Kirk done giving any bleeps when it comes to genders playing in the opposite sex sport we're going to get to some Clemson conversation because I do have a question for our tolos out there Gamecock or Clemson fans it applies to E either I'll go ahead and give you the question then we'll Crown a winner and get back to this question I want to know for Clemson Georgia week one what would have to happen realistically and you can say well Clemson will need to score more points and that would be a correct answer but I'm not going to accept that answer in order for Clemson to come out on top what catastropic events would have to happen on the side of Georgia what stat lines would need to look like on the side of Clemson basically I'm looking for real possibilities real scenarios when it comes to Georgia being upset in week one by Clemson but first let's Crown a winner it seems as if the consensus between the stream and the text line as well as my personal phone those who have put in some feedback the guy who's upset about his wedding pretty good K curb Street pretty good John Daly on how many beers deep also pretty good those are the top three so we narrow it down Kirk not giving any bleeps John Daly singing on the call on the golf course and a man upset about no one coming to his wedding for me I'm going to rank them based on my opinion as well as some votes from the tolos we're going cut two at number three the man upset about no one coming to his wedding comes in at three one more time here's cut number tell me if I'm not so me and my fiance we are getting married right and to be a part of our wedding you have to pay $450 for a ticket and that's for each guest so we invited friends and family to our wedding tell me why everybody that we invited has declined the invitation we already have spunt 100 Maybe almost close to $200,000 on the wedding we have already pre-ordered the cake we already put down deposit for the venue um we've already got the wedding dress everything we pay for everything for the wedding DJ photographer everything for the wedding and what I don't understand is is that y'all spend 400 more money more money on stupid stuff but you can't come out to support your family and your friends at with like tell me if I'm wrong tell it like is We Wrong tell me if I'm wrong like like let me know let me know because y'all pay for tickets Beyonce tickets $1 th000 tickets y'all going to go meet Chris Brown for a thousand something dollars but when it comes to your friends and your family you can't pay the ticket like these wedding ain't cheap like we like the weddings ain't cheap like like like what's going on like I don't get it like let us know are we wrong for charging for a wedding let us know are we wrong for charging for a wedding not just charging but charging for fit that comes hit at number three coming in at number two is clip one KT herb Street like I'm done giving any at all about any of it I've been biting my tongue on a lot of topics for three years I sent a tweet out about something I happened to see somebody think he said should men be able to play in women's sports and I just was like I'm just going to give a quick answer you know ridiculous question of course not I didn't realize it would be way more positive than negative I'm sure people are upset I think it's kind of a no-brainer now don't come on here and you had to to know that when you put that tweet out there was going to be a reaction I didn't give a though I don't really give all I'm done giving any at all about any of it it's almost like there are two different sets of rules if you have a view that's a little bit more traditional or I'm a Christian guy it's like there's a different set of rules it's hard to just turn the other cheek Time After Time After Time so yeah I didn't really care and I don't care at all and then the winner of the best audio of the week number one John daily clip four like I'm done giving any about any of it cut four good boys are you deep today oh I started drinking at 9ine this morning um might be the 20th I'm I slowed down if you have too many it can get ugly make you say and do some things you don't mean that's the thing six Rusty streams old five in a tip jaw make you move to Nashville chase your dreams not only an athlete but a singer eagle flying y'all eagle flying hard man so far man no laying up no holding back afraid of nothing it's a natural fact hit it long man Till It's Gone man keep Taking Chances living large I hit it I hit it I hit it hard this a one-hander this is a one-hander right here boys no it's breaking more than that oh gosh dang it smoked I hit it I hit it I hit it hard says John Daly the winner of the week best audio audio gold goes to John Daly Kurt came in second and then the man upset about no one coming to his wedding because he charging $450 he comes in third all right getting back to the question that I asked just a few moments ago Clemson Georgia you realize that when we get to tomorrow we'll be what two weeks away is that all from Clemson Georgia that's right two weeks away tomorrow will be two exact weeks the question was what realistically would have to happen for Clemson to pull the upset and no I don't mean Clemson score more points that's not a valid answer in in this activity that we're doing several text already on the text line 71307 start your text with the word fan also a few on the stream I guess the question that I have is does it all come on the shoulders of Kade kumnick here does it all is all of the weight put on the shoulders of qb1 and Club niik in order for Clemson to somehow pull the upset or is their weight distributed to other parts of the team what I mean is if you think there's some way somehow some chance that Clemson pulls the upset do you think it all comes down to qb1 do you think it all comes down to Kade having to do it himself because I'm here to tell you if that's the case I just don't know that Clemson even has a shot I would say if Clemson finds themselves in this game and it being uh you know late fourth quarter and all of a sudden uh they have a chance to go take the lead I think it would be because the defense has been really really good and maybe even the defense has created and forced a turnover or two I just don't know that Kade Kick's the guy to go and say hey week one put all of the weight on my shoulders I'm going to go win you the game against Georgia that seems like it would be a tall tall task for me madcraft on the YouTube stream says the fact is Cade will have to have himself a day that's the miracle needed defense can handle themselves I just don't know though madcraft like you talk about Kade having to have a day he'd have to have a day plus three right and I mean he at times he showed promise last year against Kentucky late in the game he looked really good A lot of that having to do with a little Tempo two-minute drill but he didn't have that consistency all season and to say that the only way Clemson pulls the upset is if Cade goes out there and does it himself that's a stock that I can't buy 502 says Georgia would have to have accidentally shown up to Bank of America Stadium on Saturday for Tigers to have a shot unfortunately wow really texter Georgia would have this is terrible but funny 502 says the only way is for Georgia to go to the wrong Stadium go to Charlotte instead of Atlanta what do you think about that Tolo 71307 and then we're going to get to the phones but one more text Brandon Bernett chimes in on the text line Brandon says Clemson would have to win the turnover battle and have the ball in their hands longer than the Bulldogs to have any chance so a little time of possession Brandon a little keep away uh you'd have to obviously do that have more time of possession have won that to battle but what do you do with those drives right if you're Clemson what do you do when you get down close to the red zone you can have the time of possession all you want but at the end of the day what do you make of those drives do you cash in or do you have to settle because I don't believe settling for three would be in the best uh would be the best recipe for Success against Georgia what say you 71307 start your text with the word fan phone lines open as well 844 fan phone that's 844 3263 663 Kevin wants to chime in on the conversation Kevin what's up man what's up Cole aloa what's up it's been a long time since I've heard from you I know that's right man hey I got a got an early morning shift now I'm I'm in that thing about six then I get off and I got practice every day now man so we're gonna have to chop this thing up a little bit well let's do it hey man um I don't see clubing having a day and which he might I ain't gonna say he won't h but I'm going put it on the old line man okay Clemson's Old Line yeah can the old line handle this you know George is coming with a good D line sure no matter the season they coming with a good D line so can they can they hold them boys off and let and let uh CL do his thing or is it gonna be an all out Georgia FunFest and just dog on let them boy kick him in the mouth I feel like cuz what do you know out of Clemson so far other than and who else they got back uh they have two returners on defense so that's not good two returning starters yeah yeah so so you know it's going to be you know Clemson defensively is going to be good but they they did return few starters um I believe that's two starters according to the Athlon sports that I was reading earlier I'll double check that though they make sure but they're not returning many on defense in terms of starters to your point I do agree with you that George's defensive Line's going to be nasty and yeah maybe something that hadn't been talked about enough to your point is uh Clemson's o line and how it holds up and how it protects Cade not only how it protects Cade but can this o line uh perform in the Run game because you know Kevin against Georgia you're gonna have to be able to run the football you're gonna have to and I don't see that happening because they they I mean old buddy gone that that was there last year so who was who was his backup you talking about the running back yeah uh Phil mafa is the running back okay well maa's gonna need about 35 carries because CL I see like I mean don't get me wrong now if Clin can go out and call his own plays like he paid man he should be able to just take over and win games by itself sure so but I don't see that one happening because that Bo probably take him out for us over and just go with the Freshman because I mean C has got what another two years uh yes that's correct if he got another two years okay we can do but if he was like a senior or something like me I would just go with somebody young and Bill because right now deo's gonna have to put his best coaching thing coaching hat on this year and really go get it because but for Clemson to be at the top I don't see it but deo's gonna have to coach his tail off this year if he don't I Ain G to say it be gone but they may be looking at five or six loss this year if you don't well you you know what you might be right but I uh I have them you know when you look at Clemson I have him losing to Georgia but the reality of it is outside of that Georgia game really they have Florida State maybe Louisville that they have to worry about in terms of uh actually being a threat you know well yeah you're right I can't say the old cupcakes because you know my to didn't that same so you know we're G have to figure out something my toy here hey I I'm sitting talking Jun B Clemson and we we got a decently young offense coming back but I don't see a lot out of us either I'm with you man I'm with you thanks for the call though brother what we're gonna go ahead and check these Chapman Panthers out you going a little high school football tonight yeah man it's time I see I see some buses pulling in look like that that look like wolverines right there I'm in the parking lot now oh okay this is the uh McDonald's kickoff classic at Chapman High School correct yeah man I see the Wolverines pulling in so I know I see they gonna get it with somebody tonight West be here real quick before we let you go that's what I was going to say Hill Crest Westside I believe is tonight at Chapman should be a pretty good preseason janere two really good teams right two really good teams man two teams that make good runs man and that West Side coming off of state championship man he it's going down hris made a good run at it last year so this gonna be two top teams and then my Panthers get on the field about everybody's bedtime tonight so that's right it is late tonight hey after you watch those games tonight if you have time between 8 and 10 tomorrow give us a shout on the Saturday scramble and let us know what you saw okay you already know man let's get this thing started thanks Kev talk to you soon man 844 fan phone that's 844 326 3663 that's the way you can chime in on the conversation and again Clemson's defense I I I think they while they have new faces I still think they'll be very good I I think West Goodwin will continue listen West Goodwin last year did a really good job you know replacing Brent Venable good one did a good job I think they'll continue to show Improvement I think they've got dudes on the defense more so than the offense a couple of young guys at the receiver position that showed up during the summer for Clemson that could have big Falls or the spring ra excuse me the spring rather um Wesco Jr and a couple other guys you know again I hate to say that it's all on kade's shoulders here but then again we've said it a million times you know this I know this it kind of does start and end with the guy who touches the football more than anybody else and that is the quarterback qb1 Kate clck continue the conversation as well as touch on a few daily wires all coming up next right here on the fan upstate [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] getting you caught up on what's going on in the sports world one more time for you before we dip out in hour number three we might have time to revisit them in hour number four but the Atlanta Braves unable to complete the sweep yesterday in San Francisco they lost the game six to zero the Braves staying out west this weekend as they do play the Angels tonight 938 first pitch Spencer schwellenbach gets to start for the Braves against Jose Sorano ESPN made some layoffs did you hear this news over the weekend Robert Griffin III and NFL Countdown host Sam Ponder cut from Sports Network so I'm being told it was because of budget reasons and money but I don't know how much of that is true if you did not know Robert Griffin II thir was laid off you do now I think it's very fascinating because I know there were a lot of people out there that weren't the biggest fan of his work work he was a non-traditional type broadcaster almost like almost in a a Pat McAfee sense really to be honest with you he he he he went about broadcasting a different way than most and uh again I didn't think he was terrible I've heard worse he was very flamboyant very positive very outgoing and uh you know he did a few things that ruffled some people's feathers but then again he had a hug unique way um of going about his broadcasting career I said it earlier the way he ran down the hill with davo one time and a few other interviews he did it surprised me caught me off guard when I saw that RG3 and Sam Ponder were let go by ESPN not sure who will host NFL Countdown now because I I don't watch every single second of it I do tune in and tune out sometimes depending on what they're talking about it's a good show I like the cast I like Rex Ryan I like the other guys that are a part of the show I just don't know man Sam Ponder did a good job of Hosting that program and now um NFL Countdown will look a little bit different I don't know if they'll have a female host in that slot or not but uh it's a it's a mustat show right leads you up until NFL kickoff on ESPN so very interesting will'll be even more interesting to see if Robert Griffin and Sam Ponder get picked up by another Network maybe Robert uh maybe RG3 can go tag up team up with skip bis somehow some way right because nobody wants to have their broadcasting career come to an end bad enough to not want to work with skip bis right absolutely not I say that tongue in cheek uh last night Weston Wilson become or became rather the first Phillies rookie uh to hit for for the cycle very impressive there by the rookie Weston Wilson and for the second straight day the Atlanta Falcons made a move they uh have shown that they are serious about bolstering this Atlanta defense Justin Simmons a two-time Pro Bowl selection one-year $8 million contract so now Matthew judon and Justin Simmons signed for the Falcons the bills linebacker Matt Milano uh has been announced out as out inde definitely with torn biceps so a big a big loss there for Buffalo as you heard earlier with Shane conik the Nascar Sprint Cup will be in Brooklyn Michigan this weekend for the fir Keepers Casino 400 Denny Hamlin is the odds on favorite to win on Sunday up near Detroit and round two of the FedEx St Jude Championship is underway let's get a live look at the leader board earlier today Scotty sheffler was in fourth right now Denny McCarthy is in first tied with a man from Japan that's has a uh that has a name that I'll screw up if I try to say it you want me to try to say it anyways I was go okay I'll try it talk me into it hiiki Matsuyama did I say it right first try hiiki Matsuyama 11 under on the day maybe I did he's finished his play and he is done for the day I'm not going to say it again because I'll probably screw it up Sam Burns Scotty sheffler and Justin Rose rounding out the top three four and five in I said did I say Detroit no I said Detroit with the race this St Jude's Championship is in Memphis Tennessee wanted to make sure I didn't misspeak there uh week two of the NFL preseason is here it's time to do a Whi round of the game games going on this weekend and what it means for those playing and uh maybe trying to make a roster in the NFL all coming up in the next segment right here on the fan up state [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] before you know it bam it's here right college football is here again good to be with you my name is Cole Bryon let's look at NFL preseason week two and check out what's going on uh this weekend who to keep an eye on who you need to watch this weekend I know it's NFL preseason a lot of you say no I'm good not gonna watch preseason I get it it is preseason but guess what it's better than no season right it's better than nothing so before I start I ask you the tolos who are you keeping an eye on this weekend in the NFL preseason week two who's your team what questions do you still have because there's only one more week remaining in the preseason after this week and then it'll be time to get the real guns out and start the war if you will the Eagles defeated the Patriots last night 14-13 a close one in uh Foxboro Jake Elliott started the game off with the 42 yard field goal Joey Sly answered for New England Drake May got in on the action with a foury touchdown run in the second quarter to put New England up 10 to three uh Jake Elliot Joey Sly went back and forth one more time in the fourth quarter and then Kendall Milton had a Oney run for a touchdown from Philadelphia to win the game 1413 last night tomorrow several games going on in week two of the preseason Falcons Ravens noon anything there that you're watching well tell I am I know that Josh Johnson the backup for the Ravens is intriguing decent backup quarterback but that's not who I'm watching right Falcons Ravens tomorrow Michael Pennock in his NFL debut last weekend was nine of 16 104 yards through the air all OD on Michael penck Jr in the week two preseason game tomorrow at noon against the Baltimore Ravens we know that Kurt Cousins is the quarterback we know that they in my opinion overpaid for Kurt Cousins they signed them to an extension right before the what the draft surely there's no way they're going to take a quarterback in the draft what do they do they take a quarterback and Michael pennick Jr I think it's a good pick if they didn't have that extension with cousins lot of money's tied up they have added two additions on defense this past week but I'm intrigued with Michael pennick Jr I'm intrigued with the Atlanta Falcons because I saw what Michael pennick Jr did in college and yeah he had kayin dbor with him and and kayin dbor is a very good coach but Michael penck Jr was a fantastic quarterback at the college level that you watch and a lot of his game translates to the NFL and again you have one week of sample size last week nine of 16 104 yards a small sample size but he did look good in what we in the snaps that we saw him take last week I hope Atlanta somehow some way in in two years from now winds up with Michael pennick Jr as their quarterback I just don't know if Kirt C again not wishing injury on anyone but if kurk cousins stays healthy what do you do how do you feel as an organization do you just hope and pray and wait and wait and wait some more wait a little bit longer that hopefully by the time Kurt Cousins decides to step away Michael pennix will still be there he'll still be young he'll still be in his prime again I like pennic but there's a lot of ifs to me it seems like there's more uncertainty with this situation than there is certainty and if you have a situation in the NFL where you have a quarterback in Waiting obviously you want him to be that guy and if you have a feeling or a belief that you want to go get a quarterback in the 202 for NFL draft to me it doesn't make sense to go sign your current quarterback to a massive extension but that's what Atlanta did so all that to say Michael pennick I think will be a good quarterback in the NFL if he plays in the next two to three years I don't know I don't know I expect him to get some playing time tomorrow against Baltimore I'm high on penck I like him a lot uh also tomorrow 1:00 Bengals bears not much here uh unless k Williams takes the field for Chicago I don't know if they've announced their plans for Caleb Williams uh in this last preseason game because this is I believe the last game for the Bears because they played the Hall of Fame game so they've already played two and uh they they should be finished after Saturday and then waiting on the regular season so if Caleb Williams gets on the field maybe you'll watch maybe you don't uh Giants Texans Saturday at 1:00 as well unless you want to watch David Mills and Tommy DeVito I don't know what to tell you about that game some more backups and then four o'clock Lions Chiefs I don't think you'll see many starters here maybe H I don't know maybe maybe henden hooker I maybe he's a bright spot maybe he's a reason to watch the Lions this weekend but can't find many and then Vikings Browns 425 man this one would be good uh if J McCarthy would not have gone down with an injury he was 11 of 17 in week one 188 yards he did throw one pick but he threw two touchdowns he's now on the IR and is now done for the season a tough blow for JJ McCarthy as we talked about yesterday Dorian Thompson Robinson probably making the start for the Cleveland Browns you have Bill Steelers Saturday 7 pm. let's see Bill Steelers anybody worth noting there Mitch trabis does anybody really care about Mitchell trabis or Kyle Allen don't think you'll see Fields don't think you'll see Russell Wilson there so probably not a lot to pay attention to I'll tell you Washington at 7 pm against Miami could be interesting and no not because of Skyler Thompson who will probably start for Miami but because of the possibility maybe Jeff Driscoll gives up the rain Saturday night and lets Jaden Daniels the LSU Tiger come in and show what he's made of I would love to see Jaden Daniels on the football field on Saturday night as a football fan as a pro football fan Jaden Daniels is quite fascinating the Washington commanders aren't normally a fascinating storyline this time of year and and quite frankly they're usually not a a FAS storyline anytime of the season however with new ownership New Management new head coach in DQ my former defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys Dan Quinn and you go get Jaden Daniels from LSU all of a sudden the Washington commanders are a fascinating storyline I don't know if we will see Jaden Daniels but if we did it would be worth watching in my opinion I think Jaden Daniels might have a a decent NFL career I don't think he'll go to Washington and have a breakout rookie season like RG3 did there but I'm just saying Jaden Daniels has the intangibles in my mind the leadership to lead an NFL franchise and uh you know Washington wouldn't be looked at as a good destination normally but like I said when with new leadership new ownership and and Dan Quinn who is a very good coach regardless of what he did against the New England Patriots uh in the Super Bowl blowing a 283 lead he's still a quality coach right he's still a very good coach and uh I think that the Washington commanders are heading in the right direction with Jaden Daniels 7 o'clock Saturday night Arizona Indianapolis not much going there just uh not a lot of story lines two bad teams Seahawks Titans also at 7 pm. Sam Howell Mason Rudolph local Northwestern product and Mason Rudolph maybe you see him he was traded to the Titans uh Jets Panthers Saturday night 7 PM how about that Carolina Panther fans will you see Bryce young or will it be more of the Louisville Cardinal product and Jake or excuse me Jack plumber Jack plumber doesn't move the needle for anybody however we might see Bryce could we could we possibly see Bryce young out there Saturday night against the New York Jets you heard Aaron roggers a little bit ago in the audio of the week say NFL preseason football is not football do you buy that do you believe that uh so we'll see if the uh Panthers Trot out some starters Saturday night 7 o'clock also 7 o'clock Saturday night Rams Chargers might be a decent preseason game STS and Bennett got a lot of playing time last week against my Cowboys he did throw four interceptions and win the game FYI four interceptions and you still win only against the Cowboys only against the Cowboys Stetson Bennett 24 of 38 224 yards one touchdown four picks so expect to see him for the Rams bucks Jaguars uh Saturday night Kyle tras CJ bethard no interest there right cowboy Raiders I'll pay attention I probably won't watch the entirety of the game 10:00 start it'll probably be on NFL Network because it's the only game going on but uh Dallas Las Vegas Trey Lance versus Gardner menu I doubt you'll see many Cowboys uh starters trying out for that one and then you know the quarterback room in Las Vegas concerns me the quarterback room in Las Vegas is aen O Connell the guy is Aiden o Connell the answer is Gardner meno the answer I don't think so I don't know Gardner menu six of 12 last week 117 yards one touchdown he's a veteran backup but do you put all of your eggs in the uh basket of Gardner menu if you're the Las Vegas Raiders you know Trey Lance is an interesting storyline and uh obviously with him playing for my Cowboys I will follow it a little more closely but Trey Lance coming out of college showed a lot of promise and just the Trey Lance experience or the Trey Lance experiment rather and San Francisco was the exact definition of a bust San Francisco takes the guy in the 2021 NFL draft the third over overall pick and man Trey Lance just absolutely did not pan out with Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers so I I guess as an optimistic Miser you know a Cowboys fan who's gone through a lot of misery lately and uh miserable miserable Cowboys fan here speaking I'll say this maybe Trey Lance does show some promise I hope he does I hope he does but Trey Lance may go down he may go down as a bust completely maybe Dallas gives him a shot one day maybe they move on from Dak and Trey gets the job I don't know that that'll ever happen but uh he right now seems like Trey will be a bust and then on Sunday Saints 49ers Packers Broncos those were the only two Sunday games uh in NFL preseason week two so those are the uh NFL a few interesting story lines few few interesting story lines on this uh NFL preseason week numero do texter chimes in I tried to send a picture of a car with USC and Clemson stickers SMH y'all block pictures texter I don't think it's that we block the pictures I just don't know that our platform uh that we use for text messages on this radio station allows and supports pictures so I hate I hate it for you hey if you have a Twitter if you have an X account you can follow me there at the Cole Bryson or at the fan Upstate we are on Twitter and don't know if you know this or not but on Twitter you can send pictures you can tweet pictures yeah that's right you can so uh follow us on Twitter send the picture on X I can't figure out which one I'm going to call it Twitter or X but you can definitely send it my way on X um we do have Shane Beamer coming up next I talked to Shane Beamer today at 3M to start the show and I want to spend a few minutes in the remaining portion of this segment going through the state of South Carolina Gamecock football because we had a a big discussion about this at about 320 and we got back to it the 4:00 hour as well but you know something that's fascinating and I did not get to this this question by too madcraft and I wanted to pull it up something that's fascinating when you look at South Carolina in the SEC I'm one that says South Carolina is in a tough spot when it comes to the conference that they're in the teams that they have to play and madcraft on the stream earlier brought up a question and he asked me and I wanted to get to this cuz I failed to do this ear earlier in the show madcraft asked Cole is your stance that Carolina should have zero expectations at this point you're convincing me Vanderbilt deserves a pass all these years and madcraft to answer your question no I'm not saying South Carolina should have zero expectations I will never ever ever stoop to a level that low and tell you that South Carolina wouldn't have expectations because that's a that is a losers mentality right that's not a good mentality to have so no I'm not saying they should have no expectations what I am telling you is as media radio show host you as the fans we do have to do our absolute best to try to take the the recency bias any bias thoughts that we may have take all of that out take our colored glasses off whatever uh whatever color team you pull for whether it be orange and purple or red and black or Garnet and Black take those off or in your case madcraft orange and green because that's the horrendous colors of the Miami Hurricanes my point is take it off and look at it realistically no South Carolina shouldn't have expectations of a national title every year no South Carolina fans shouldn't have expectations of zero somewhere there is a fine balance in between somewhere there's a fine line in between national title and zero expectations right I will tell you the reason I say you have to look at it from a realistic standpoint is because we have not seen a coach go to South Carolina and consistently win other than what Steve Spurrier did back to backto back 11 win Seasons the greatest accomplishment South Carolina Gamecocks have ever had is winning backto backto back Seasons under Steve Spurrier we haven't seen a coach come to South Carolina View South Carolina as a destination job Steve Spurrier is the only coach who on the back end of his career after he already made a name for himself decided to come and give it a crack at South Carolina I don't know if it was just Spurrier wanting to prove himself Spurrier wanting a new challenge Spurrier being bored I don't know the exact reason however I will tell you South Carolina's expectations should be somewhere in the middle what do I mean by that do you think South Carolina would be setting the bar too high now that we don't have divisions in the SEC if they said hey our goal is to compete for a conference no that would not be in my mind setting the bar too high year in year out your expectations at South Carolina any school you play at any school you coach at should be to compete and win the conference South Carolina has the cards stacked against them in several ways when it pertains to the conference that they're in the money that they have compared to other schools in the SEC Alabama oh by the way A&M oh by the way Oklahoma oh by the way Texas South Carolina when it comes to the money the investment they can't compete in the same ballpark as those schools that I just mentioned Texas money is different and I mean different Texas money is Big Time so set your bar at winning the SEC that's fine I'm not saying have zero expectations I'm just saying we have to look at it from a somewhat realistic standpoint of hey they're not where they need to be I'll give you that but at the same time what have they not had go in their favor what kind of cards are stacked against the deck when it comes to South Carolina winning at the highest level madcraft says if you begin every year Going H I don't know it's a tough schedule you'll always be mediocre trending water the schedule has been difficult for two decades boohoo it's hard for everyone start expecting more than five wins that's all I'm saying Miami struggles in a cupcake uh in a cupcake conference it's not hate but if you don't have standards then it's a loser mentality I agree with you that if you don't have standards it is a loser mentality I'm not saying never have said they shouldn't have standards but for me to sit here and tell you they should be competing for a 12 teams play for a spot in the 12 team playoff I couldn't say it with a serious face I could not say that on radio on live broadcast radio and actually mean it do I sometimes during the five o'clock fight and other times say things I don't mean sure but if you want me to be honest with you don't ask me if they should be competing for a national title or spot in the playoff just because I I I just to be quite Frank I I don't believe they will ever be competing for a spot in the playoff as I said the cards are are immensely stacked against the deck not in the favor of the Gamecocks can they make runs sure now I will say this if someday somehow some way they get back to the glory that spur brought them to the way the landscape of college football is now set up gives them a good opportunity to compete for a 12 team playoff now there's a difference between competing for a 12 team playoff or a spot in that playoff and actually being a national championship Contender that's the difference between the two playoffs if you made the four team playoff for the most part for the majority of the time you were a national championship Contender if you make the 12 team playoff you in my mind my opinion you are not a national championship Contender just like in March Madness 64 some odd teams make the tournament those teams that are 30 through 60 they're not true contenders to compete for a national championship yeah you'll have Cinderellas but my point is if you want South Carolina to somehow have a shot at being relevant they're gonna have to have a coach who views it as a destination job have to have a coach that understands that there's only been one coach in the history of South Carolina football who's done what anybody wants him to do and that's Steve Spurrier and understand that the cards are stacked against you and understand that somehow without the same budget without the same money you want me to go win in the SEC in the best conference but I don't have anywhere near the amount of money that these other programs do that's my point that's my point and it's it's a tough conversation because South Carolina does deserve better they they have not been a fan base that's had a lot to pull for Shane Beamer's a great coach in my mind he's a great guy he's in a situation that's tough to win will he get fired from USC maybe he does one day but it's a tough situation to be in for any coach all right speaking of Shane Beamer on the other side we will have for you the replay interview of our conversation with Shane Beamer next on the fan up state h
