At 19, she turned into a heroin addiction. >> At age 22, someone gave her pure fentanyl without her knowing, and she passed away for Jeanette, those what ifs never go away. I think I didn't know how to help her and I feel a lot of times like I abandoned her in her time of need. It's why she fights to raise awareness. >> In the past two decades, 36,000 North Carolinians have died from overdoses. Chandler Pico was almost one of them. They truly intense experience. It was traumatic, definitely. And it was eye opening. You know, having a paramedic shine a light in your eye asking, are you okay? You know, it's going to be okay. Buddy was truly it was a true wake up call. Pico says that wake up call finally prompted him to go into recovery. I struggled, um, since I was a young kid, you know, and it just continued on from there and it snowballed and I needed outside help and intervention. In addition to more outpatient and treatment centers, they also want to see more life saving Narcan. Richard Smith with Healing Transitions, carries it everywhere, and he finds himself responding to more and more calls any given day, we can have anywhere from two to 8 to 10 people on that report, and those are just the documented overdoses.
