[Music] and new head coach tony elliott's debut with the virginia cavaliers the who's take care of business in scott stadium defeating the richmond spiders 34-17 to start the season off in the right way despite all of the excitement from the uva fan base richmond struck first with a rushing touchdown from zavon smith to give the spiders an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter overall richmond had a lot of success running the football in this game running for a total of 170 yards on 35 carries with smith rushing for 88 of those yards uva's run defense was a problem all season last year and once again looks to be concerning in 2022 however uva's defense settled into the game nicely after richmond's first quarter touchdown and would only allow one more touchdown from the spiders the rest of the game in the win uva secondary did a pretty good job in coverage of limiting big plays from richmond and held spider scooby reese udinsky to just 160 passing yards virginia's defensive line also did a mostly solid job of getting pressure on udinsky finishing with a total of two sacks offensively after punting on uva's first drive of the game it did not take long for uva to respond and tie the game up a senior qb brandon armstrong found junior wide receiver lavelle davis on a 56-yard pitching catch and davis first game since suffering a torn acl and missing all of last season davis led the who's in receiving with four catches for 89 yards and a score overall armstrong played a solid opener for the whos finishing with 246 passing yards for two touchdowns and an interception on 21 of 33 passing he also had a 64-yard rushing touchdown on a read option in the second quarter to help give the cavaliers a 28-10 half-time lead armstrong would finish the game as uva's leading rusher with 105 rushing yards on 10 carries after an off season of offensive coordinator dez kitchings preaching how important the running game would be in 2022 the results immediately showed against richmond as senior running back paris jones ran the football early and often with plenty of success jones finished the day with 104 rushing yards on 19 carries with the rushing td in the first half his 104 yard rushing total marked the first time that a uva running back has run for over 100 yards in a game since jordan ellis in 2018. in total uva ran for 259 yards their most since running for 262 against boston college in 2020 to go along with this great game on the ground jones sealed the game with a crucial 11 yard receiving td from armstrong in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the spiders and clinch a 34-17 win even though the cavaliers were pretty sloppy on both sides of the ball at times and did finish the game with two turnovers uva did have 505 total yards of offense on 6.7 yards per play and held richmond to just 330 yards of offense all things considered uva should feel pretty good about the win and coach elliott's debut and will hope to move to 2-0 when the cavaliers travel to play illinois next saturday [Music]
