Today we profile, Mike Tirico. Today’s preeminent American sportscaster. He is the face and voice of sports today He tells us what our eyes are seeing And he tells us what our eyes are not seeing He grew up in New York City and was raised by his single mom. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science & Broadcast Journalism from Syracuse University and began his sports broadcasting career there Tirico hosted his first show from WAER radio in Syracuse, the station where he started his sports broadcasting career, on the campus of Syracuse University. Fellow Orange alum Bob Costas was his first guest. While at Syracuse, he was the first recipient of the Robert Costas Scholarship. He has great memories from Syracuse University and says "it's my happy place" He says, “One of the proudest things I see is 25 years after I graduated, when I go to a Syracuse sporting event, there’s a senior or a junior from WAER broadcasting sports just the way we did, and just the way it happened a couple generations before us. That’s a great legacy for the university and a great tradition that still continues to this day, and makes those of us who were a small part of it very very proud.” He joined ESPN in 1991 as a SportsCenter anchor From 1991 to 2016 he served as a SportsCenter anchor and a play-by-play announcer for ESPN/ABC Since 2016 he’s been the voice of NBC Sports The greatest American sportscasters of all time would include: Jim McKay, Curt Gowdy, Vin Scully, Brent Musburger, Dick Enberg, Al Michaels, Bob Costas, Jim Nance Mike Tirico is today’s preeminent American sportscaster Here is a partial list of the biggest sporting events worldwide that Mike Tirico has covered: FIFA World Cup, The Olympic Games, The Super Bowl, The MLB World Series, The NBA Finals, The Stanley Cup Finals, The Ryder Cup, The Masters Golf Championship, The British Open, The Indianapolis 500, The Wimbledon Championship, The Kentucky Derby, The Triple Crown, The Daytona 500, The Tour de France, The College Football Championship, The Army-Navy Game What a list. You dont see what's going on under the water What we see in black & white, he sees in amazing technicolor. He helps us understand the person rather than just the world class athlete we are watching. He is a quintessential example of a person who keeps learning while he/she keeps earning. Every time you watch and listen to him, his childlike excitement and wonder screams out. The late great Ernie Harwell often said that whenever you have a choice of being right or kind, always choose kind. Mike Tirico lives that way everyday. One of the great challenges in life is to manage prosperity. Mike Tirico has done a terrific job of staying humble and grateful these past 30+ years. Here's a quote from the New York Times Magazine “Tirico sets a tone of relaxed omniscience the feeling that, at every moment, you’re being told all you need to know, in an optimally elegant and succinct way,” Wrote the Associated Press “Smooth, informational, funny and opinionated when needed, Tirico simply is the best no matter what sports he is announcing. The more Tirico the better.” A few quotes from Mike Tirico “I wrote six versions of a 30-second tease for an NBA game. You never get it right on the first try.” “You can’t just look at the back section of the newspaper or the sports section by itself. You need to understand everything that’s going on.” “The vehicle is the game but the real passenger is the athlete’s stories.” “In golf, the pros play for money every week. During the Majors they play for history.” “The very best athletes when their run is over the dismount is never smooth.” Recently, he wrote me his Philosophy of Life I have never taken time to put a personal philosophy or approach into words. Upon reflection, a common thread is the belief and approach that none of us are a complete and finished package. The best approach to success always comes back to preparation. Superior and thorough preparation helps to mitigate any trepidation about the task at hand. None of us can accomplish things alone. The support of family and friends provides the fuel to survive and thrive. Life is a team game and nothing replaces great teammates. With thanks!
