know it might not be my dream role but I'm here to play Wisconsin basketball and I'm here to get wins so whatever I can do to help the team I'm going to do and I think all of us have done a great job of doing that and buying into that role and see speaking it speaking of getting wins too I mean statistically as we speak you've had a minimal a number of games decided by five points or fewer unlike the last two years but you've had games that have been down to the wire the way you closed out uh uh Northwestern or closed out in Ohio State to use two examples there's something where you got new guys here but a lot of you guys have been around the block too that experience knowing that knowing what to do in those situations has that been a big help for you guys this season yeah for sure I think I mean we as players talk about all the time we can just feel the difference when we're in the game of last year we' kind of have a lead and it start to dwindle and we'd play tentative and scared and uh this year we're playing without fear there's no fear and we're going in there thinking we can win no and we can win um and you can just tell at the end there's a different guy showing up every time there's another guy making a play whether it's scoring or having a big rebound Nolan came in at the end of the game last time had a big chest up big rebound too so just all those things and we can just feel it the growth of the guys and I think we've worked pretty hard over the summer working on that the mental toughness of you know we meditate do all that little stuff before the game so that we're in the game we're locked in we're in the zone and um we're not worrying about what could happen instead we're just playing the game to the best of our ability one possession at a time and with all of that with the increased depth the the experience the conditioning this time of year where something could hurt like with everybody everybody's hurting a little bit but relatively speaking you got you feel like a fresher like a more fresh team maybe than than a year ago in part because of the depth yeah I think the depth helps a lot and I think winning helps a lot I think when you just have a good attitude and when you're coming in and there's Positive Vibes I think that's something we've all worked on a lot better this year of coming in here with a good attitude of it can get long especially at this season coming in doing the same stuff every day starting second semester and being in the cold but I think that's something we've all kind of Taken upon oursel of not coming in Drake and coming in ready to work excited to work and I think especially when you're winning it's easier to come in and doing that stuff for last year you lose and you get back at 4:00 a.m. and then you got to go to practice the next day at 10:00 probably class after that so um I think just winning then just bring the positive attitude we coming in here every day ready to work ready to listen and uh being coachable and I think that's helped a lot for sure certainly given the success of this program for years Wisconsin gets everybody's best shot I feel like that's ramping up now even given where you guys are in the standings as you get deeper into the Big 10 season you kind of brace for that though right you're going to get everyone's best every time you step out on the floor yeah and I mean that's why we that's why we play and we found that out going to Penn State when we get move up in the rankings and you got to play the road games and obviously we know every Big 10 game is going to be tough but when you have that number next to your game and the lower that gets the more people are coming after you so um you got to take it with the green of salt know that yeah it's cool to have this ranking but know that you're going to get everyone's best shot and we're not pleased yeah we're number 13 but we know we're a top five team we think we're a top five team so um just going out there every day and proving it to ourselves and proving it to everyone and I think that's just something we're continuing to work on every day you mention being on the road and obviously Minnesota you got guys on this team from there so you're going to hear it I've talked to a number of your teammates over the years or even guys who played before you got here there's something about being on the road that kind of like you know home games are great you know you get area red get students involved all that but something about you guys against the world that you wrap your arms around too yeah I think that's something that we just kind of um come in with uh with the Wisconsin model all of us are mostly underdogs lowly recruited no stars three stars um so we kind of always have that Underdog show continues from Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln Nebraska for the Badgers and the Huskers here tonight time now for our Badger notebook I know Greg guard was asked about this uh earlier in the week and we'll get into it more next week at his coaches show but I think a lot of fans have been wondering what's the Big 10 schedule going to look like next season and Beyond with an 18 Team league um exactly who's playing who when where all I mean all of that is to be determined but at least they know the number right yeah I think the conference expansion largely gets thought of in a football sense you know what's going to happen in Wisconsin's football schedule is out for next season and so you can kind of Envision okay they're going to play Oregon at home they're going to go to USC starts to become real well the Big 10 announced this week how they're going to format it for basketball and that starts to bring it to reality a little bit too and what what's some of the logistics mean of going to a conference of 18 it's humongous so they decided they're going to stay with 20 games in the conference schedule which is what they have now the women are going to play 18 which is still what they have now uh I like it I support it I think that's a healthy number they considered a 22 game conference schedule um but they but they decided against that uh the current it it aligns what they're doing now it it allows for non-commerce flexibility which I think was important um as Greg guard put it this week he didn't want to be he he was afraid of the cannibalizing that could happen within this conference if they play even more conference games and so this allows for a little more flexibility in the non-conference um it's also consistent with their peer schools but what it's going to mean is Wisconsin is going to play every team at at least once but they're only going to play three teams in home and homes so when you go do you think about at the end of the season what makes a conference champ Champion it's an interesting argument of if you let's say you only played the top teams at home or on the road the schedule fairness becomes an issue a little yeah and it's already a factor now but more so moving forward who you miss and who you who you only play at home yeah that that that's going to really be magnified now now the counter to that is you do Miss guys when they're hurt right like happens I mean like I get I agree with you I don't like it but let's just say you know someone gets hurt you don't have to play when that player is hurt like that happens through 20 Game season anyway and and the pck you got to have some luck and the Patrick's Point I think and Greg has talked about that you still want to schedule some good outof conference games there'll be some Bui games and their buy games but you know this this season I mean a lot of quad one opportunities out of conference you want to continue to be able to do that when you have the team equipped to handle it no question what's has always tried to schedule aggressively in the non-con and it's it helps them it helps their net ranking it helps them so the other part of the formula here is that they announced what the big 10 tournament is going to look like and this is maybe where the radical shift becomes is that not every team will get to participate in the Big 10 tournament moving forward so that that's that's a I think that's a bitter pill for some people and that's the beauty of March Madness right is that theoretically every team has an opportunity to win the national title that's not the case anymore for the Big 10 now and they're going to go to 15 teams in the bracket instead of 18 so three are going to be left home and that's what makes it great I'm an old school Soul when it comes to give me anybody a chance right you time in I was just going to say most of the time it's never going to happen but give him a chance I'm but I'm an old soul like that you could have that team that's near the bottom that making magic and at least advaning you we saw last year with Ohio State we've seen it with some Illinois teams Iowa teams over absolutely you're right te be the in the Big 10 Championship in 2008 Illinois had to play four games in a row that's right that's right um were you on that team I was I take all right but real quick we won what they're able to do is they'll keep the format pretty similar that it's going to play Wednesday through Sunday they'll have three games on Wednesday so nine teams will have a first round buy and then the top four seeds will have a TW Round buy much like that is right now a couple minutes here we we got to get into the area of three-point defense if you look at Wisconsin in Big 10 play opponents are 39% from three but that's not the one and only stat that the Wisconsin head coach looks at right no and and if in fact coach guard was asked about it at his media briefing this week and he was asked about basically the worst part of your defense where your susceptible is and I think he bristle that b and and and what the reporter meant and it makes sense is that Wisconsin ranks 12th in the Big 10 in three-point field goal defense 313th in the country so teams are shooting at 36% that's a good clip and Wisconsin doesn't want to be low like that obviously but that's not the indicator that as Greg guard explained that is his biggest priority Wisconsin is actually fourth in the the Big 10 top 50 in the country in fewest three-point field goals allowed per game under 20 per game and in today's game of college basketball if you're holding teams under 23-point attempts that's rare that's an outlier by comparison Nebraska uh they are allowing uh 26 threes per game so big discrepancy there in terms of these two teams and so I I think it's interesting philosophically what teams value and what that means for how they shape defensively and today that's particular important based on the way Nebraska plays they lead the Big 10 and three-point field goals made three-point field goals attempted and certainly here at home we know they're they're making almost 10 threes a game so Brian I don't this might be an opportunity for you to talk about the philosophy of this defense and how three-point field goal percentage isn't really the end all be for this team no it's not and I think that's the biggest thing when you look at what they do they take away that three-point line a lot of it is guard to guard they'll switch that action to take away three some teams won't switch that now all of a sudden you've got a trail guard Y and then they come along and that's where you can give up a three if you're big as enough but if you switch that you take away the threes and then even though we know Wisconsin is not a great shot blocking team you give up that mid-range twoo you can live with that every defense you're going to give up something like that's the reality of it and I think that's where Wisconsin is going to give that up that mid-range you know jumper but it's all understanding where the action's going to come whether it's a pin down it's a trail but then it's a hard hedge by the big so there's different things that I've talked about but with everything that Wisconsin has done on the defensive end that's been one that's always been preached and a lot of it is as it go but guard to guard switching and then if there's any screening action those bigs are up and showing on that to make sure that the three can't get off and then that's where you get the pocket pass that's where you get your weak side defense your drops your sinks all those and that's going to be big tonight 45% of the shots Nebraska takes 45% are threes so Wisconsin's defense are really detested in that regard Wisconsin's average is about 32% for opponents just to keep that in perspective so we'll have to see who dictates that category all right that's Patrick her that is tonight's would do it that was uh I mean you've always You' talked about wanting to get better on the defensive end you guys sure we're better on the defensive end yeah we were I mean it's probably the most complete game we've had in a while um Matt but you know you always find things as you comb through the film that we can get better at and but I thought offensively we were there was very few lapses very few empty possessions we had a little stretch in the second half but and that obviously helped you know one end always fuels the other whichever way it works um defense to offense or offense to defense but I was proud of how our guys played and we're able to you know wrap that one up and then get a couple days to rest because of the Gauntlet we've been through and now we're back at it I think fans got a kick out of the social media clip first last week when you got win number 100 now 101 and Tyler wall I mean that's impressive it speaks to his you know obviously longevity but the your shootaround there are home road splits and then there are severe home road splits and I don't think that's an exaggeration get into it a little bit what what are they doing at home so well as opposed to to being on well I think a little bit of everything Matt you know they shoot it better from from three that's obvious that's number don't it's easy to pick that out they're getting to the free throw line more they're rebounding better and defensively they've been better so it's a combination of almost everything the three-point numbers from 30 some per on the road to almost 50% here at home uh jump out at you but all the other numbers are up too just as you would expect I I think you probably do anybody's home road splits they're probably better at home most teams but this team I I think probably feeds and always has feeds off being at home more than as much more than any other team in our league and it seems like as much attention as somebody like casay Tomy Naga gets and he's and he's an exciting player to watch constant energy but he's got a lot of help they've got a lot of guys who can shoot the three they do you know really you know that starting five depending on who they go with tonight I know Jaan Gary's been hurt but it it's everybody you know and rank Mast has really played well here as of since the last time we played I mean made six threes against Ohio State here a week ago and and has really fueled their offense and such a good passer too so it's hard you know put you in a quandry with how they spread the floor with those Shooters and then played through him and let him facilitate and make decisions and handle the ball so it's a it's a really good challenge defensively I've talked to some players coming into this game and Through the Years your guys as much as they love playing at home this will be a really good atmosphere here tonight but your guys like that yeah they do they do I you know that goes back to when we first this place first opened Northwestern by 99 10596 but man the shot making from both teams in that game was at an elite level wasn't it well we talked about it northwestern's a really good team we know Purdue is but the way Northwestern has played Purdue all year long and then in that game expecially like it was like it's what makes college basketball great you guys know me well enough but like this is what makes it great is when you have two teams with that performance on I think we got a chance tonight to have another two teams are really good right now Mike D Cory has Nebraska in in the N tournament as a 10 SE we're into February now we can start those conversations a little bit and you look at Wisconsin like you win this it's a quad one and then you got that big one like you could be talking about a possible one seed so like there's a lot on the line for this game but throughout the league when you get two of those top tier teams going against each other you're going to get a really good basketball yeah wiscons by the way six and3 in Quad 1 games 4- one against quad 2 so that combined 10 and four record quad one quad 2 very impressive the other game last night much different than the think it's a question I think it absolutely was their best game and you look at now you've got a little bit of of a longer stretch how do you get out to a good start and that's kind of one thing especially knowing that this building is going to be ready to jump at anything Nebraska does this is one of the better buildings as far as fan bases as far as getting behind their team and for me the biggest thing you got to take care of that three-point line you cannot cannot let Cas tominaga get goals he's a guy that plays so much better at home and he plays off that energy more than I think any player in the Big 10 when he's at home versus that road more than any player you can't let him get going this is a team that plays you we talked about the the record at home in Big 10 Road games they defensively right like offensively they at a high level but they've only given up eight points to Nebraska and they've been locked in defensively this is one of the better starts of the game on the
