let's bring in Liberal MP Keith wahan who joins us live from camra he's a veteran himself thanks for joining us Keith good to talk to you on a range of issues but I want to start on this uh uh firstly the trauma of what's been teased out and put on the table through this Royal commission so many veterans suiciding so much uh so so many difficulties for them adjusting to life back at home in Australia Post their service now uh as a veteran yourself every veteran I speak to they know people there's people they serve with or know personally who have lost their lives in this way can you tell us about your own assessment of of the problem here they do and for many of us who have been veterans we consider ourselves fortunate when we sort of get get on with life and we have children and jobs and and sometimes we don't look in the rearview mirror and and I sat in the chamber today when the defense minister tabled the report and and he acknowledged um a mother in the chamber um whose son Dave was uh killed and prompted this Royal commission and you could see the raw emotion in her when he acknowledged her son and that's what we forget in all of this when a veteran a week dies on average it's 20 times the number that we lose in combat incidents but behind each of those is a mom sitting in a bedroom holding a picture of her son and the future that he or she never had and and that's who I'm thinking of today there there are many many mothers and fathers who are thinking of their children but we must also as legislators read the report properly and not make it just another one that sits on the shelf and we do nothing about so I encourage all of my colleagues on both sides of politics to let's read the report and let's come together and make sure that this one leads to the change that is needed yeah there's a lot to be pck picking through a lot of detail to discuss so I won't try and pretend we have all the solutions now but there's a pretty clear uh recommendation that the Veterans Affairs department just isn't working and you might need a new body essentially start from scratch to help veterans readjust to civilian life what are your thoughts on that I'll consider the reports and look into it but but I think what we do know is that red tape isn't just a buzzword when it comes to Veterans Affairs uh I've spoken to other veteran friends of mine about how they process their claims and and I'm a lawyer by background I went not to be a barrer I found it really confusing to get my head around it now things have moved on we have a new and I think we have a new renewed sense of purpose to be fair to the DVA so I think there's a lot of good work that is being done to make sure that we reduce that red tape and that people who need help get it in a timely way and and again let's see if if we can acknowledge that some good steps have been done but but also where we can do better then we must do better well let's go back to the uh the cut and thrust of question time today and the the opposition focused very strongly on the economy and especially the way that Jim Charmers and now the federal president of the aop Wayne swam are attacking the Reserve Bank this is unprecedented isn't it they're basically trying to trying to shift the blame for the cost of living crisis to The Reserve Bank and trying to bully them into lowering rates it's unprecedented and it's unprecedented for this government too up until recently Jim Charmers did back in the independence of the RBA he was a big Defender so in some room somewhere some political adviser has suggested this as a political tactic and that's what they're going ahead and Prosecuting and Jim Charmers is trying to walk himself back from the comments given by his old boss Wayne Swan but Wayne Swan isn't just another former politician he's a current president of the labor party he's not doing things or saying things without instruction and he's not doing it in a way that is not approved by his political party yeah exactly thanks for joining us Keith I appreciate it Keith willan there liberal MP joining us live from camera
