Intro last year Google released this the pixel fold the company's first ever phone with a flexible display and now at its latest madeby event Google has a sequel in the works but don't call it a pixel full 2 because alongside a revamp design it's also getting a rework name so let's check out what's going on with this new pixel 9 Pro fold now right away I think that moniker Design is a real mouthful but the idea behind it isn't bad because Google's trying to make sure that people know that the latest fold is part of the larger pixel9 family that means the latest fold has the same tensor G4 chip similar displays and the same AI features as the rest of the line plus a few bonus additions made just for this device but before we get into that let's start with its design which has made a pretty big shift from its passport shape predecessor to a longer you know more traditional frame in fact the profold 6.3 in outside display is almost exactly the same size as the one on the standard pixel9 and pixel9 pro and with a peak brightness of up to 2700 nits for both displays inside and out it's every bit as colorful and vibrant too for its chassis Google has switched over to a slightly boxier design with a new steel hinge that's covered by an aluminum alloy frame and uh there's Gorilla Glass vicus 2 in front and back now I will admit I was a bit bummed out by the change in shape as I've really come to appreciate the original pixel folds wider from display but after playing around the new one the pro folds dimensions are definitely growing on me and if you remember the Size whole purpose of using that wider panel on the original fold was to make the outside screen more usable than something like the long and skinny displays that Samsung has been using on the Z fold line so by using a screen that's the same size as what you get on the other pixel 99's they're definitely sticking to that Mantra which is something I really like to see Google has also slimmed down the pro fold and even says that it's the thinnest foldable on sale today that said measuring 5.1 mm stick when open or 10.5 mm stick when closed if it is a touch fatter than both the honor magic V3 and the xiaomi mix fold 4 if we're only talking about foldables in the US I think Google's claim still holds true then when you open it up you get what Google is calling the biggest screen on any phone on sale today at 8 in across which is up from 7.6 in on the previous fold its technical name is the super Camera actual Flex display and it's absolutely gorgeous overall I really think Google nailed the pro full design and I already think it has a leg up on Samsung's rival R back there's a big new camera module that holds a 48 megap Main camera and a 10.8 megap telephoto camera with a 5x optical zoom which looks to be the same as what we got on last year's phone but I haven't been able to confirm that 100% just yet and finally there's also a 10.5 megapixel Ultra wide camera that can also shoot macro photos as someone who has ding Samsung for saddling the zold 6 with cameras that aren't quite as good as what you you get on the main Galaxy S line it kind of seems like Google is doing that again for the pro fold that New features said seeing as how the pixel fold already had an advantage in terms of image quality and general features over pretty much every Z fold it's not quite as big of a deal then there are tons of new features and photo modes now one quick note because we had limited Hands-On time we tested out some of these on the regular pixel 9 and pixel9 pro alongside the pixel9 pro fold because like I said before there is is parody for these features across the entire family there's stuff like add me which uses AR guides to help you take group shots without needing to ask a passer by for help and there's new improved video boost tool that works in the dark and can do high reses zooms but Made you look my favorite new feature is definitely made you look which is exclusive to the profold and it puts a fun animation on the outside screen while you're taking a photo so you can get a nice shot of your kids or anyone else who might be slightly distracted it even uses an algorithm to detect when that person is smiling and then that makes the animation move which is just a really simple but clever way to get a candid reaction even when you're doing you know a normally boring posed photo in more General use there's also the new pixel screenshots app which allows you to save screenshots and then later use AI to find specific images or even more detailed info like specific concert dates alternatively if you want to Pixel Studio generate your own images there's the new pixel studio app which is kind of surprisingly powerful not only can you generate images from scratch with AI you can also create stickers of your friends remove distracting objects or even create entire invitations using various prompts there's even a new pixel weather app that uses AI to write a quick summary of what's going on that day or if you're more into talking to AI you can use Gemini live to have a more natural conversation and then get answers across a huge range of Topics in a more sort of natural flow without needing to say Hey you know every time you think of a question and it doesn't stop there because there are some more features we didn't get to try such as the pixel 99's improved clear calling tool there's also call notes which uses AI to create transcripts of a call and Google has a new satellite SOS system that lets you call for help even when you don't have cell service finally in terms of specs Google has bumped the pixel9 pro fold up to 16 gigs of RAM which is always very nice with either 256 gigs or 512 gigs of storage all told while I've only had a short time with it so far I really like what Google is doing with the pixel9 pro fold you know aside from that really clunky new name in a lot of ways Google is delivering what I wanted Samsung to do for the zold line the pro fold is thinner than the zold 6 while also having a bigger main screen and its cameras look better too plus Google has long had the advantage in AI which is leading to a lot of fun new features we're seeing this year sure Google still doesn't have an answer to Samsung's Dex mode or built-in sty of support but for people who just want a convertible phone with great screens excellent cameras and Powerful software the pixel9 pro fold is looking like a great followup to its predecessor oh and at $1800 it cost1 less than the zold 62 but what do you think let me know in the
