this is SMY surgery right now tonight's guest she got a brand new movie coming out next week just in time for the school holidays the movie it's a dream it's from Dreamworks it's one of those animated ones it's going to make even as an adult it's going to make you cry and I did it's called The Wild robot the robot is leita nongo let's take a quick listen to the trailer and then get her on the show incident report at 0300 hours a number of universal Dynamics robots were lost in a typhoon chance of recovery is unlikely do you need assistance processing language you need to learn how things work on this island hello hi guys it's your girl Lupita and the Oscar goes to Lupita nongo when I look down at this golden statue may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you're from your dreams are valid thank you I will protect all of you you are ordered to return home I am already home and I am a wild robot oh hello leita hi you are just glowing thank you you are glowing are you ever tired yes yeah okay cuz you you I don't know if you are but you look stunning I'm exhausted inside ice water in the morning will do you a lot of favor is that what it is is that the trick iced water in the morning D your head in ice water oh I was thinking drinking oh no no no dunk your head in it it'll keep you out get out is that like a trick of the trade it is yes I'll take that mhm okay I'll take that I'm I'm thinking in my head now all of the opportunities I should have done to use that hey congratulations on the movie thank you I damn you for making me cry as a robot as a robot imagine what I can do a I'm I mean you already have before but wow to put emotion into an animated film like this wow yeah I mean that was a challenge and a wonderful one when you're given restrictions it makes you very resourceful yeah so with RW being a robot uh I knew that I didn't I couldn't fall into the habit of just emoting as an actor which is what I'm usually paid to do but finding the like the the technical way to uh sort of convey emotion without falling into it which was to is it harder than you like when you have you a whole when you have a as an act as an actress when you have your body to help tell the story do you have to dial in something else when it's just all in the voice you still have your body in the in the booth so you use your body in ways you wouldn't use it in front of the screen so you can contort it's all about bringing your body to life in the voice so you can contort your body and weird ways and you know just to get the right sound I can't wait for behind the scenes uh as I said it made me cry and I'm not normally want actually I lie I get emotional and everything I cry in reality cooking shows oh yeah that's sweet isn't it yeah does anything bring you to tears like things that shouldn't make you cry yeah like ads on TV I remember this ad a mobile ad that brought me to tears every time I saw it it's like okay the first time you're allowed to but the second time third time I need to speak to my therapist drive now obviously when you're playing a robot please and I got told don't ask this but I have to go with it when you're playing a robot do you ever uh feel the urge to want to make sound effects for your character in the booth as you go because I was in my head going oh my God imagine if leita would make a robot sound effect for me my goodness no never occurred to me I had too much work to do to myself even more you weren't like just doing the robot dance in the no that never occur but it occurs to me now really do cuty dance moves the robot on always there you got it I got it I loved it it was worth it was worth it it was worth it I want to see you syn to that oh absolutely um there's a whole bunch of uh other famous names in the movie do did you do this with them in the booth or was it one of these projects where you're just on your own house clothes yeah yeah I had Chris uh the director who was my scene partner for every single scene do you dress up do you wear your house clothes you are always stunning like I I don't think I've ever seen you not look stunning so I can imagine you probably don't own like house clothes you do I do I do and I love them I love them I just don't go out in them no okay that's the difference between you and I is that you know the boundary and I don't know where it ends and where because like don't leave the house in your house CL that's the one thing I'm taking away from this yes please do congratulations on the film thank thank you for making me cry as you are most welcome thank you very much good to meet you SMY surgery is a Nova podcast for more great shows like this head to nov podcast.com
