Well, the CEO of Kroger is promising to cut food prices by a billion dollars. If the Federal Trade Commission approves a merger with one of its competitors. The FTC is trying to block a $24 billion merger between Kroger and Albertson's claiming it would eliminate competition and lead to higher food prices. The CEO Kroger says a merger will give the combined companies a better chance of competing with Walmart and Costco. He blames increasing food prices on rising supplier costs, fuel prices and credit card fees. He says if the merger is allowed, the stores will cut grocery prices on day one by a billion dollars. Another Kroger executive admitted to raising prices above what inflation would require so the company could profit. The merger hearing is expected to last through next week. Now Kroger doesn't have a physical location in Austin. The closest store to our area is in College Station. The company did briefly offer delivery services in central Texas but stopped in May of this year after shutting down an Austin delivery center. The company says the center did not meet the standards set for success. 52 people in central Texas were laid off by that shutdown.
