18 people went to jail this Labor Day weekend accused of driving under the influence the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says sadly they see an increase in DUIs on Labor Day weekend every year Fox 23's Jade marrow joins us live in studio and Jade this doesn't even cover all of Green Country that's right Morgan police took these 18 people to the Tulsa County jail for reference there are 21 other counties in Green Country take a look at this I found a total of 18 booked in the Tulsa County jail for DUI this Labor Day weekend from August 31st to September 2nd according to data from the national highway traffic safety administration 2013 to 2022 the state of Oklahoma is the fifth deadliest state to drive in on Labor Day Lieutenant Chris Arnold with Oklahoma Highway Patrol told me last year on Labor Day they responded to a total of 11 deadly crashes all in a 4-day period unfortunately people's actions are going to injure innocent people in other vehicles right so uh you got to have those emergency services for for things that people do wrong so that's even important as part of of what we do as well every year before Labor Day St Francis Hospital in Safe Kids Tulsa host a news conference to emphasize the importance of staying safe in and around water as well as behind the wheel Lieutenant Arnold says seeing crash numbers go up after theyve work so hard to get the word out is frustrating you know it's a little frustrating to me um you know when we do these press conferences like I said earlier I did did at the same location a year ago and we're trying to tell the public to be safe and everything and then you turn around and have 11 fatalities is pretty frustrating Lieutenant Arnold says during the holidays be careful behind the wheel and make smart choices we're not telling people not to drink we're just saying don't drink and get behind the wheel I mean it's a pretty simple decision no one puts a gun to your head and tells you to get behind the wheel driving in pair that's a decision that you make so uh it's it's something that's preventable it's something that you can plan ahead OK Highway Patrol does have extra Troopers both on the road and OK on Oklahoma Lakes this weekend they want you to be cautious not only for yourself but for those around you live in studio cover news at matters I'm Jade Maro Fox 23 News according to the national highway traffic safety administration in 2022 490 people across the US died in a crash on Labor Day weekend 39% of those crashes involved a drunk driver
