and that was journalist T blaska talking to us from near Hiroshima in Japan now the British prime minister K stammer is in Germany today for discussions with Chancellor Olaf Schultz this is his first bilateral trip since taking office last month his visit is focused on resetting post brexit relations between the UK and Germany the two countries say they want to strengthen economic ties improve defense cooperation and address migration challenges schz and St St say that they have agreed to work on a new security and defense treaty which is likely to take several months to finalize and we can get more on K's visit to Berlin from our chief political editor mishaa kufner Michela tell us what are the main things that Karma wants to get out of this visit to Germany well he wants to move closer to Germany particularly economically and also to the European Union one must remind viewers that um there is the brexit uh Britain is no longer part of the European Union but it's linked to European countries through NATO so they are defense allies uh the Europeans and Britain and they have a whole host of common interests but what we what we heard here from K dama is really uh wanting to move a lot closer he stressed that Germany is the second largest trading partner of of Britain and he really hopes to create jobs both ends now um he was also asked by media traveling with him how he wants to do this without rejoining the European Union because the whole list of what he wants to achieve to have a more in a common market he didn't say the words Common Market but he wants to have a lot more trade that's for sure uh less trade barriers he wants to have um more flexibility when it comes to labor markets he wants to create jobs everywhere and he wants closer defense cooperation well this is part of the European uh catalog and and here certainly Germany is in a much stronger position of being Europe's largest economy I mean he has made very clear hasn't he that that the UK's desire to reset relations with the European Union does not mean reversing brexit why is he making such a big point of ruling out rejoining uh rejoining the EU when as you say he's really pushing for closer ties well it's British style R politique um he faces challenges back home he clearly does not want to take the risk to open the brexit debate that wound something that cost Britain dearly in terms of a revenue as well and at the same time he wants to go as far as he possibly can that's a clear signal we're getting in moving closer to the European Union and particularly its markets so uh that's where he stands right now and that's also why we expect a long negotiations although both say they want to have for sure that defense agreement by the end of this year all right we'll have to leave it there but thanks so much for that analysis DW's Chief political editor Micha kufner
