Germany and neighboring countries are preparing for, in some cases, severe flooding due to the expected heavy rainfall. Affected are the Oder and Danube, but also the Elbe, where the rubble of the collapsed Carola Bridge could further hinder the flow of rain. Record amounts of up to 400 liters of rain per square meter are expected in parts of the Czech Republic and Poland over the next four days . In Austria and Slovakia the expected rainfall amounts are slightly lower at around 200 liters per square, but still enormous. Philip Röttger, who is currently at the Austrian border, reports on the current flood situation: “Here in Rupholding, near the Austrian border, the situation is still very relaxed. It is raining, but the heavy rain has not yet started.” However, the German Weather Service is still warning of exactly this heavy rain until Monday morning for a total of 15 districts. A red alert was also declared here in the area. However , things are different in Austria, where people really prepare for an emergency. Up to 400 liters per square meter are expected there today and tomorrow, which can of course lead to flooding very quickly. The Bundeswehr is supposed to provide support in an emergency; up to 1,000 soldiers could then help. In addition, train connections have also been suspended, so the railway advises postponing trips until after the weekend. Now the flood walls on the Danube are being inspected more closely, which can be extended up to 10 meters, as it is assumed that the Danube could fill up very quickly. The situation in the Czech Republic is just as critical, where up to 400 liters per square meter could also fall. That could then become a problem for the Elbe and therefore also a problem for Germany, because the Elbe flows from the Czech Republic directly to Dresden, which could also become a flood problem for Germany.
