honor to be president of the University of akan it's my privilege to extend a most cordial welcome to all of you who've joined us for the 233rd commencement ceremonies of the University of a welcome graduates and welcome to parents spouses relatives friends who have helped make possible this day of achievement and who share your pride in this celebration I'd like to ask Executive Vice President and Provost Dr John Wii to join me for some introductions we are joined this morning by representatives of our distinguished faculty we are fortunate to have such a remarkable group of individuals who are experts in their field sharing their deep knowledge with our students and challenging them to reach their life goals at the University of akan Faculty are not only teachers and mentors but they remain Scholars first and foremost and their writing and research helps to shape our understanding of the world world members of The Faculty will you please rise and remain standing thank you thank ask Miss Christine Amer mayor Vice chair of the University of Bo akaran Board of Trustees to extend greetings on behalf of the board thank you president Miller good morning on behalf of the University of akan Board of Trustees I offer a warm welcome to our guests and especially to the spring 2024 graduating class of the College of Engineering and polymer science graduates you are the primary reason why this University exists and we thank you for entrusting us with your higher education you had many options from which to choose and we sincerely hope that your acine experience has proven that you chose wisely in addition to conveying our gratitude we want you to know that we appreciate and applaud your accomplishments here through great effort and perseverance you have seized opportunities to broaden and sharpen your thinking expand your worldview attain professional and personal growth and become educated CI citizens now you will have more and greater opportunities to thrive to contribute and to serve my fellow trustees and I wish that the journey awaiting you will be filled with good health good fortune and continued success and Will from time to time lead you back here to your Alma modder we are honored to join with your families friends and faculty in celebrating this important milestone congratulations thank you thank you trustee mayor graduates you entered this building today as students and you'll leave it as alumni before that transformation takes place it's appropriate to hear from a representative of the class of 2024 accepting that responsibility for this morning's ceremony is Miss Megan Chapman before I call Megan forward allow me to tell you a little bit about this exceptional student Megan graduates today from the College of Engineering and polymer science with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering she was a Williams Honors College scholar during her time at UA she had an outstanding academic career and graduates with a 3.5 grade point average that she maintained while working at three campus jobs she earned a co-op certificate and was on on the President's List and the dean list Megan received the outstanding freshman award and more than 10 scholarships including the chers Brown scholarship the under underrepresented student scholarship the akan guarantee scholarship and the akan advantage award she received a top 10 senior award as a Williams honors college award of Distinction Megan is deeply involved in the UA Campus Community among her many roles was a student member of the emerging leaders program a member of the dean team the honors or residence hall government treasur and Leadership education and programming Mentor she was also extremely active in engineering organizations including the American Society of civil engineers the University of akaran Steel Bridge team and the Society of women Engineers Megan is also a student assistant at zip assist you might Rec recognize her from appearances in UA marketing campaigns but you won't recognize her from most of her visible roles on campus Megan was a member of the University of akan mascot team and so played Zippy on many occasions after graduation Megan plans to attend graduate school and study transportation engineering Megan's parents are Tim and Stacy Chapman of lottville New York and and I am very honored to invite her now to come forward and address the class of [Applause] 2024 good morning I am very honored to be the 2024 commencement student speaker and to be speaking in front of you all on this very exciting day congratulations to all of my fellow graduates you should be very proud of all the hard work you have put in to achieve the degree you receiving today I would like to thank some people who have helped me during my college Journey including my parents sister grandparents best friends zip assist my friends from the office of the university registar and Dr David Rog their support is a big reason why I'm here today speaking in in front of you all ready to receive my bachelor's degree in civil engineering for those of you who do not know me I am from a very small town in Western New York called elville in my hometown going to college farther than an hour away is a big deal and an out ofate school is an even bigger deal as I started searching for schools it grew more apparent that I would have to travel a distance for an engineering degree that checked all the boxes of my wants and needs during my college search I found the University of akan and was amazed that this school was one of the top ranked engineering schools and that it had a small student to faulty ratio I fell in love with UA the first time I stepped foot on campus and felt so comfortable knowing that there are supportive faculty and staff and so many opportunities to get involved UA was everything I wanted the University of akan truly is my home away from home college is meant for students to learn and grow to find their true selves and prepare to have a successful career during my first year I learned a great deal from my peers professors and myself however I dealt with homesickness that year and kept it hidden from everyone because I was too afraid to ask for help it had grown so severe that before my first spring semester I was ready to drop out of UA to attend a university closer to home my mom had submitted a help a zip referral form through zip assist for me hoping I could get the support I needed to stay at UA after weekly meetings with one of the staff members I gained the reassurance I needed knowing that homesickness is common and that I was not alone I felt so much better gain self-confidence and learn to cope with my feelings in a different way with this new feeling of empowerment I realized that if I was more open about my feelings I might be able to help someone else who's struggling through the mentorship roles I had I have encouraged my mentees to ask for help when they need it I am so grateful every day that I did not leave UA and the help I received from zip assist asking for help is not a weakness but essential to your well-being and going on to a successful career and a happy life as a woman in engineering I have had to face challenges in the engineering world and unfortunately many of us have to at least once in our careers I had to learn very quickly that I would have to work hard harder to prove my intelligence and have the self-confidence to succeed in my Co-op experience I had remarks said in my direction such as well she's just a girl why should we listen to her and she doesn't know anything just to name a few instead of letting these hurtful comments knock me down I use them as fuel to show everyone that women can engineer to and we are are intelligent in our Fields after this experience I encourage my mentees and any fellow women in stem to not give up even if they face adversity and obstacles I encourage them to reach out for help when they need it which is a valuable lesson I learned from my first year experiences perseverance is one of the keys to being a successful engineer as you all head into the next chapter of of your life remember to not be afraid to ask questions for better understanding ask for help when you need it and persevere through any challenges the great game of life might throw at you looking back at my freshman year I am so proud of myself and all that I have accomplished since then we should all be proud to graduate from this incredible University and we should be proud to be Zips congratulations and go zips [Applause] great job congratulations graduates one of the great pleasures of being a university president is you get to be the last person to give advice to the graduating class this is a particularly uh special class you started your college career before before Co lived through covid and then finished it after Co and I have to tell you that uh I've worked in higher education almost 40 years and I have never seen a more resilient courageous Innovative and positive graduating class and I congratulate you for that but I still have 10 pieces of advice to give you number one you've received an excellent education at the University of akan but remember this most P the most powerful tool that you have in deploying that education is empathy people who are sensitive to the circumstances of others are the ones that solve the big problems in this world number two unfortunately you'll find people in this world who dismiss you ignore you take advantage of you or show outright disdain for you if you want to develop your skills at dealing with people like this get a house cat you'll have the opportunity to deal with rejection every day of your life number three civilized societies Embrace a common good this comes from mutual respect from taking care care of one another from lending a hand to those in need nurture this precious Commonwealth through a life of service number four despite what you may think there is such a thing as truth as an educated person you're obligated to seek it as an educated person you're obligated to speak the truth if you want to number five if you want to persuade somebody of something the first thing you need to do is listen to them very very carefully understanding another person's perspective even if you disagree with it is the only way to get that person to understand what you think number six be optimistic after all it is theoretically possible that the Browns could win the Super Bowl number seven some of you are going to become billionaires when you do please do not spend your money building rocket ships we got enough of those guys already go out buy yourself a really nice car and give the rest of the money to the University of AR hey it was worth a shot number eight the very best way to interject yourself into a conversation is to be a scholar ask a question people always enjoy to F to talking with folks who are curious number nine the most important characteristic of successful people in whatever field is that they never believe they are through learning keep learning it's the only way to succeed and finally number 10 love is not a thing Love is Everything find love give love and that will make you happy congratulations to all of you take care of one another and remember you're always a zip and now invite provos intently over the past several years the Spring Class of 2024 at the University of akan consists of 2,188 candidates from 29 States and 41 countries ranging from ages 17 to 69 and includes 40 candidates for the Doctorate Degrees 93 for the jurist doctor degrees 267 for master's degrees degrees 1,390 for bachelor's degrees and 318 for associate degrees today we are gathered in formal convocation with those candidates from the College of Engineering and polymer science and Dean Craig mener as we recognize and confer degrees upon these candidates we will begin with our Cadets from The Reserve officer training Corps after which we will proceed by acknowledging those who have earned doctoral degrees master's degrees and undergraduate degrees as each candidate has their name called we do ask that our guests please be respectful of the occasion so that each candidate may be duly recognized for their accomplishments will the graduating Roc Cadets please rise and remain standing Mr President these students have successfully fulfilled the requirements of one of the degrees at the University of akan with the approval of the faculty they are now presented to you to our campus the program has been regarded as an integral part of the University a respected academic Department that provides strong leadership and management courses and offers a minor in military science today these Cadets will follow in the steps of a long line of Military Officers who began their distinguished careers at the University of akan our Roc program dates back to 1918 and is one of the oldest in the country these Cadets have excelled both by earning their bachelor's degree and by demonstrating the skills required to be a commissioned officer in the armed forces of the United States and I believe that they are well prepared I know we all have high expectations for their success and we are also most grateful for their commitment to serve now candidates as evidence of your allowing me this opportunity to speak to you it certainly a pleasure to be here addressing the 2024 graduating class of the College of Engineering and polymer science go Zips let me offer sincere congratulations for our graduating students your parents family friends and loved ones in attendance recently events in my own family had me considering the notion of time my thoughts and what I'd like to share with you go back a number of years to a discussion of the word time from the Greek there are two words for time Kronos and Kos Kronos in and of itself refers to what we naturally think of as the relative passing of events or the quantity of time that can be measured as we age kono's time seems to go faster and faster even though as engineers and scientists we should know better beware of kronos's time no one knows how much or how little any of us has my first piece of advice would be to appreciate appreciate and not take for granted each and every single day and make the most of the cronis time that is given you in practice what does this mean it has taken me far too long to recognize that there is no time for bitterness no time for holding a grudge certainly certainly no time to get lost in the past and no time for petty arguments that in the end won't amount to anything there is simply not enough Kronos time graduates please don't waste it Caro's time does not refer to a clock or the passing of events it is about moments it is judged by its value or importance one has to be wise and observant to see the Kos moments we all come across moments where we are able to step up make a positive difference whether to our employer neighbor neighbor no matter who they are our family our friends or someone we simply don't know who needs a helping hand remember to celebrate today it is one of the those special moments and it is well deserved as you leave here remember to enjoy your life remember that time is precious and no one knows how much of it we will be fortunate enough to experience rise up work hard every day to pursue your dream and don't quit the only time you fail is if you give up so keep keep at it continue to grind toward that the University of akaran Alumni Association thank you president Miller and congratulations class of 2024 [Applause] your time as a student has come to an end very shortly you'll walk out these doors a proud graduate of the University of akan before you do know that you are joining a community of more than 180,000 talented Dynamic and accomplished alumni spanning the world akan alumni have played an important role in the success of this institution since its founding 100 54 years ago as executive director I encourage you to continue this tradition to remain engaged and to stay connected from recruiting new Zips to mentoring current ones or by joining us for our many alumni events including this October for your first homecoming as an Alum lastly graduates seek the joy in this place and
