heartache grief and shock not only in the hockey world but across communities in North America following the news at NHL player Johnny cro and his younger brother Matthew were killed by an alleged drunk driver the brothers 31 and 29 were killed Thursday when they were struck by a vehicle while riding bicycles in South New Jersey New Jersey police in a release on Friday say they were hit from behind when a vehicle was trying to pass an SUV on the right that had moved over to make room for the two cyclists police say they've arrested 43-year-old sha Higgins and has been charged with two counts of death by Auto improper passing as well as having an open container in the vehicle and consuming alcohol while driving they say the investigation is ongoing both brothers were in the area because they were supposed to be the groomsman at the younger sister's wedding on [Applause] Friday Johnny was a beloved member of the hockey community and spent eight seasons with the Calgary Flames before joining the Columbus Blue Jackets Matthew was a professional hockey player in the minor league by high scor in a statement the Blue Jackets called the gd's death an unimaginable tragedy NHL commissioner Gary bman releasing a statement in part saying he was more than just a dazzling hockey player he was a doting father and beloved husband son brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path you know I I hope you know people you know remember his remember me as you know a good person off the ice good teammate the Flames paying tribute on Friday to the father of two whose youngest was only born this past February Leaf's GM and former Flames GM Brad tree living releasing a statement saying in part he was absolutely devastated by the news in Columbus his name and photo outside the arena where fans were placing flowers in the brother's memory tributes online from current and former teammates of both brothers including Johnny's former teammate Eddie La posting I don't know why I'm even writing right now I'm shaking but Johnny was one of my favorite teammates I've ever played with always happy always spreading positivity around him Johnny was an NHL Allstar seven times and was the all-time leading Point scorer for Team USA at the world championships for city news I'm lindsy Dunn
