Why New York Jets OC Nathaniel Hackett is UNDERRATED

I think Jeff fans are actually underrating Nathaniel Hackett and today I want to get into why what is going on guys Matt O'Leary back with another video today I'm going to be talking some Nathaniel Hackett before we get started today I wanted to mention you could follow on socials at Matt O'Leary and why and also make sure to check out the justjets podcast where you can call in and leave me your questions so Nathaniel Hackett was on Peter schrager's podcast earlier this week actually it dropped late yesterday or I saw it early this morning but more of the story I was watching the episode and it got me thinking about Nathaniel Hackett and it's understandable why I think so many people like Nathaniel Hackett around the league he comes off as a very likable person uh he seems easy to get along with and Aaron Rodgers obviously really likes him and gets along well with him but Robert Sala has so many good things to say about him and all his players seem to love the energy that Nathaniel Hackett has now obviously personality is not a reason for why he is underrated as an offensive coordinator it is very much more involved than that but when looking at just previous Jets OCS clearly there was some disconnect over the last few Mike LaFleur young inexperienced and obviously at times had some really tough moments with some of his players whether it was Zach Wilson or Elijah Moore those two supposedly behind the scenes uh Mike LaFleur was talking badly about Zach Wilson and then you had the Elijah Moore scenario during the season where they were bunting heads and going back back and forth at each other and it seemed like at least to me that some guys got in his doghouse and it's very difficult to get out of that and then before that was the Dowell Loggins and Adam gase experience and it doesn't take much research to know that Adam gase was not a likable person now Nathaniel Hackett unfortunately gets compared to Adam gase for some reason and I guess it's because they both both were not very good head coaches but the thing with gaze is he I really only had success with Peyton Manning and then with Hackett people are assuming oh well he only had success with Aaron Rodgers and that's not entirely true he did have success which we're gonna get to in a little bit outside of just Aaron Rodgers which I think puts him a little bit above plus you add on top of that his personality and he's easy to get along with and players like him that's an added bonus as well so I think the biggest area where Hackett is underrated is in the red zone when Nathaniel Hackett was with the Green Bay Packers that was one of his jobs was the red zone offense because obviously leflore was calling plays Matt leflore not Mike LaFleur Matt leflore was calling plays and Aaron Rodgers had a really big say in what was going on rightfully so and that's going to be the case here with the New York Jets and that's an okay thing but one of the reasons why Hackett was brought in was to help improve the red zone offense and he is very very good at that the Jets have struggled so so much converting in the red zone and I think that is the biggest area where we will see Improvement I was able to go back and look up the rankings for NFL teams in Red's in converting Red Zone opportunities to touchdowns and here is where the Jets were over the last few years under Mike LaFleur they ranked 31st last year 20th in 2021 and then the years prior in 2020 with Adam gase 32 21 and 30 going back to 2018. so over the last five years 31 20 32 21 30. that is gross they are one of the worst teams in the NFL at trying to convert opportunities in the Red Zone into touchdowns and obviously six or seven points helps you win games more times than settling for three even when Nathaniel Hackett was involved with offenses that struggled for instance last year with the Denver Broncos they were not very good the offense was ranked 29th in offensive dvoa but they were 14th in the NFL in Red Zone touchdown percentage so even still the offense well below average one of the worst offenses in football but when they were down in the red zone they were converting points on the board and that is going to help the New York Jets when he was with the Packers in 2021 18th which all right a little below average but before that first in 2020 and second in 2019 his first two years with the Green Bay Packers with Jacksonville he even had some success not the last year in 2018 things run really off the rails really off the rails with that offense Blake Bortles was terrible and that team was fresh off an AFC Championship Game appearance from the year prior but they stunk stunk in 2018 they were 31st in Red Zone touchdown percentage obviously that's not good but the two years prior in 2017 the Jacksonville Jaguars offense led by Blake Bortles number one in the NFL in Red Zone touchdown percentage that's how efficient their offense was in the red zone and if you want to go well that was just an outlier season well the year before that 11th so he was 11th first 31 which is 31 is obviously really bad but twice with Blake Bortles and that offense they were able to get top half of the league nearly top 10. 11th is right outside the top ten so close to top 10 in Red Zone touchdown percentage two out of his three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars I'm sorry that's that's impressive and with Rogers his dvoas were great offensively second first eighth with Jacksonville 30 not good 15 though in 2017 middle of the pack with that offense is okay and 27 obviously not very good but here's the thing Nathaniel Hackett has Aaron Rodgers it's not like it's oh you're trying to convert Zach Wilson into being the guy and you're bringing in Nathaniel Hackett to to fix him and that's your plan a at quarterback or you're trying to do it with Jacoby Brissette or an injured Jimmy G or Ryan Tannehill the combination with Aaron Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett has been proven to work it does work they've had many years three seasons of success there and that's why I think Jet fans are underrating him is because the the recency bias with how things went in Denver and it was very obvious he was not ready to be a head coach at this level that is okay but as an offensive coordinator and especially in the Red Zone I do think he is one ready and two good and that is an area where the Jets desperately need to improve when their offense was clicking earlier on in the season before you know Zach Wilson really went off the rails and before avt and Bruce Hall went down they were able to move the ball a little bit between the 20s and then their offense would stall out espec even if you want to go beyond that at the end of the year remember the game against Minnesota and the Jets kept getting into the Red Zone and they were just settling for three time and time and time again if they were able to convert some of those threes into touchdowns that is a massive difference and I think that specifically is where Nathaniel Hackett comes in and improves his football team so yes Nathaniel Hackett underrated for the New York Jets in 2023. I want to hear from you do you buy it what do you think of Nathaniel Hackett sound off below I am Meadow Leary and I'll catch you next time thank you
