Severe weather leaves tens of thousands without power in Tasmania, Victoria | ABC News

a flat evacuation warning remains in place this morning for multiple communities along hobart's Dent River and tens of thousands of properties remain without power after days of wild weather across Australia's Southeast in Tasmania communities remain isolated and several properties have been inundated by flood waters including loreni estate Distillery while in Victoria severe weather warnings have been cancelled however dozens of roads are still cut off and drivers being urged to take care reporter Selena Ross is in new norol for us this morning while Steph fer is at the State Control Center in Melbourne good morning both let's start with you Selena what's been happening in the Derwin valy good morning Michael well we seem to be getting a little bit of reprieve as Bridget said that emergency warning is still in place but um we were at this same spot at midday yesterday and the river level is kind of at a fairly similar level but we can see that there's debris right up to in front of where I'm standing so it has come higher at this point it peaked around midday and then has started receding in this area uh but that evacuation warning does still stay in place so people do still need to be taken care um the severe weather warning is also still in place but is for a much smaller part of the state now around the central plateau and affecting some communities there uh but even though that you know for most of the state that severe weather warning has eased they're still feeling the impact across communities right across the state uh due to the power outages we've got phone Communications down internet services down in so many parts of the state that are still being worked on and then late yesterday we heard that there was a group of 13 Bush Walkers up on hobart's Canan Mount Wellington who uh police were getting Council Crews to assist with getting them back down safely off the mountain and then the police report this morning said that as they were bringing that group of people down they actually found another five walkers who were up there in similar circumstances with only minimal food and water no Provisions or you know supplies to stay on the Mountain overnight uh so they've managed to rescue them in the same time as well so a successful outcome there but police are really frustrated that people have been going out when there have been so many warnings repeated warnings for days uh for Bush walkers for weather alerts for Bush Walkers so yeah they I think the frustration levels are pretty high at this point when uh it's been days and days of it and still things like that are happening yeah I can understand their frustration indeed now over to you Steph things seem to be calming down in Melbourne well thankfully Michael after that very Sleepless Sunday night it has been a much quieter night however the cleanup job is still continuing a pace you can see the mess behind me here at a cafe in Armadale in Melbourne Southeast this is after those wild winds came through tearing down trees as well as power lines with more than 100 kilm per hour gust and what we know from the sces is that there are still some 49 9 active jobs that's of more than 4,700 calls for assistance since 700 p.m. on Sunday night that includes more than 35,000 for trees down and some, 1300 for building damage so places like this that are going to take quite some time apart from that there's an estimated 55,000 people uh customers that remain without power because of those down power lines we know for example in the Mornington Peninsula as well they've set up three relief centers there just to try to help people who might not have any power simply to charge their phones and things like that and we're also hearing that some New South Wales sces members have come along as well they arrived just after midnight there are about 29 of them and they're going to be helping with some of those worst affected areas both in gibsland as well as in the southern Metropolitan region with the area of Frankston the hardest hit from this latest storm surge and we know that at the moment we've seen the coastal Hazard warnings just being cancelled by the Bureau of meteorology after they were recording 8 m swells however there is still a gale wind warning for parts of the East gips land coast and the sces says that they are now in cleanup mode looking ahead to the next system that is likely to hit the state from Wednesday
