Chicago Cubs release reliever Hector Neris, promote Jack Neely | CHGO Cubs Podcast

and I did have one question for you Cody what was your favorite part of the hector nerys era uh when he almost blew the save against arguably the worst team of all time or at least that me and you have ever seen um and then went postgame and said that he's the best that was my favorite part of the hector nerys era that's a confidence that I don't think anyone has only some people who are built different can have that kind of confidence Luke stuck Meer only some people that's right yeah uh Hector neris moment of silence the ER is over can we can we bring up the PCA clip of him pouring the water heart attack Hector he is gone yeah never nervous nerys were you surprised to hear the news this morning I was surprised I'm surprised they walked away from it same like so I'm a little confused like is he are they just eating the money it does it doesn't change luy he cleared waivers I believe they're going to have to eat the money that's what I that's what I assume yeah yeah so like I mean at the end of the day I don't care about them having to eat the money or whatever I know a lot of people are have been talking about the Cubs going over the luxury tax uh Corey and Brennan talked about it a ton on Sunday's podcast um you know and that was something that we all thought that they weren't it's something we've talked about all season um you know mismanagement blah blah blah who it's a lot of just confusion behind that um but as far as them cutting ties with nerys I was surprised too but I also I like I feel like he's gonna be gulped in with like guys like Kevin Greg and LaTroy Hawkins and Antonio alansa when we talk about some of the worst relievers of our times of the last two decades and he's had a great career I and those other guys I I you know maybe Hawkins had a solid career too there we go but but um I just you know it was the Cubs didn't use him in the role that they signed him to to pitch in and so I honestly won't be surprised if say like Houston somehow picks him up or something and they use him like they've always used him as a you know seventh eth inning guy and he helps them make a playoff run I won't be surprised if something like that happens it won't and if he has success with them too I won't I won't I won't be surprised like this the whole thing with nerys to me was all about the fact that they kept using him to close games and I understood it after Alay got hurt and was out I understood it then because he was your most experienced reliever that you had and all this and that but since June you'd seen guys kind of emerge and you still kept using him despite the fact that he wasn't really being effective for you at all and it and when he was it was like you felt like you're going to pass out from a heart attack okay but like like that that's my big if there's any cons like uh negative things I have to say about Craig Council this year that's probably my biggest thing is that they just continue to keep using nerys in the ninth inning despite how we saw some guys emerge over the last couple months and it's not like nerys was pitching well enough to deserve those ninth inning opportunities it was almost as if like well he hasn't he's been this bad so let's like like why not try someone else I knew that there was a a section of time in there where he had gotten better but he was still G up giving up a ton of hard contact so that's just it is what it is R he could probably clarify this whole vesting option like did the Cubs get out of 2025 are they free of nearest Forever is is it are they done does that money come off the books how's that all going to work out Ryan well yeah they're I believe they're they're clear of that like the option is is no for next year like they don't have to worry about that I mean obviously um they're on the hook for the rest of this year's money right and then if he gets picked up by a team like they probably sign them to the minimum salary and then um you know then whatever like that amount is the minimum salary at this point of the year would come off the Cubs book so it's probably not probably more of like a a small amount of a small dollar amount that that you're not really going to notice um but yeah no it's it's the hect ER as you guys said in Chicago is over on the north side of Chicago at least um yeah I mean side okay you're right he could sign with the socks um no I mean I was I was surprised now well yeah I mean I was I was I was definitely surprised to see that news come out this morning um it was kind of just one of those things where like like for one they like they didn't have to pitch him another 15 times or whatever it was for his his option to best we could have figured out a way not to do it maybe have gotten some Rumblings of grievances from from The Players Association but um you know there's probably ways they they could have worked around it but um you know this was obviously a way to uh to to to bring him off the roster to to do whatever but obviously you know talking to Jed Hoyer uh before the game today um they actually said that or at least you know he said that uh this decision didn't have anything to do with the the option and the contract and whatever I mean that's what he's OB that's that's what he that's what he told us was he smiling when he said it of course it did I mean I know it probably has to do with getting a longer look at neie and and why not so he can make some decisions there but come on well I mean what's is he gonna is he gonna say that they cut him to so that his option doesn't vest and then they get some agreement from The Players Association of course not U that's just what he said that it didn't but they did make the point they did make the point as you said they do want to get a longer look at Jack Ney the guy they got for Mark L Jr at the trade deadline a guy who um kind of dominated Triple A when he got to Iowa um gu he said that we talked to NE before the game and he said that you know he was like 5 10 minutes on the way to Toledo on the bus and they had to stop the bus and turn it back around because he had he had to go back to Chicago to come up here H which is kind of funny just um you know the life of a minor Leaguer but um no that I mean that was definitely a part of it they want to get a look at Jack Neely they want to see what they have in this guy a guy they got for a reliever they felt really good about in Mich leer J right the guy that they they felt good about for a couple years now so um while yeah I don't completely believe that the contract situation had nothing to do with it uh I I I do think the Jack NE part does does play a part in that and and is going to be important for them for the next you know month plus uh is getting looks at him they they didn't get him in the game today but definitely getting looks at him is GNA matter yeah Neely 68 and uh six of that is the mustache from what I understand I've seen some photos it's a very impressive mustache and we know how those play out in Chicago very well always lead the Championships almost all I'm saying is like you can't have a mustache that good and suck so if he sucks he better shave the stash the stash and then the the fit that he showed up in to beautiful historic grigley field today I'm like I'm starting to already talk myself into him being the closer like this this this is oh boy this this is this is like Prime get the squirt the squirt gun out Luke like or squirt bottle like y he showed up ready to impress and uh you know he impressed with the look the stash hair look pretty good whatever now just can't wait to see him pitch you know they're not going to pitch him the first time in in like a high leverage spot so I would like the Cubs to score like 10 runs in a random game so we can see him [Music] pitch we all like the May
