5 former World Junior hockey players named in sex assault case

CBC can now confirm the names of four Canadian nhlers and a fifth overseas player who have been charged in connection with a sexual assault that dates back to June of 2018 now all were members of Canada's gold medal world junior hockey team at the time our Sarah gashin has been following the latest on this story she joins us now from Vancouver at our breaking news desk so Sarah what do we know tonight Travis it has been a busy hour but now yes we can confirm the name of uh names of five players who were with that Elite 2018 team um starting with Carter Hart who who is currently a player with the Philadelphia Flyers a goal tender for the team on a three-year contract worth $ 11.9 million he also played goal for that uh gold meding medal winning 2018 World Junior Team um and also on that 2018 team and charged with sex assault as well is Dylan dubet um now a forward with the Calgary Flames uh Michael McLoud a for a forward with the New Jersey Devils also on the New Jersey Devils is Cal foot uh he plays defense for the team uh lawyers for all of these players say that they have now been charged with sex assaults uh related to uh 2018 that dates back to 2018 pardon me that they all plan to defend themselves they all deny any wrong doing um they are joined by Alex foron uh who did play with the Ottawa center senator he was also on the the the world juniors team in 2018 he played with the Senators for a year and then went on to play Pro in Switzerland he actually turned himself into to police we have video of that um that happening on Sunday so doing things differently than uh the other four players here but now all five of these uh hockey players um are charged with sex assaults related to the allegations that go back to 2018 and let me just revisit those allegations to bring everybody up to speed in case they have missed this but they go back to uh the allegation that uh a number of players met a woman at a bar in London Ontario in June 2018 that one of them went back to hotel room and engaged in consensual sex uh that other uh men entered the room uh later on and that what took place after that according to the woman was a series of sexual assaults initially London Police did investigate but they closed that initial investigation citing lack of evidence um that investigation of course was reopened when it came to light that the woman had sued among others Hockey Canada for $3.5 million and that organization choosing to settle that case out of court for an undisclosed amount Travis okay so all of this breaking here uh in the last couple of hours Sarah what are police saying about this case if anything tonight well so they're they're not talking tonight and of course they did reopen that investigation after it came to light that there had them that settlement and so since then they have been investigating they did though um last week announced that there would be a press conference held this coming Monday February 5th and that was the same time that the glob of mail reported that there would be five uh former players with the 2018 that would be facing charges of sex assault and so now we are confirming um that that is uh the case and and we have as I say the identities uh for you related to that and once again they are Dylan dubet of the Flames Cal foot of the New Jersey Devils Alex formenton H now playing pro in Switzerland Philly Flyers heart and um and uh um Michael McLoud with again the New Jersey Devils and once again lawyers for all of these men are saying that they have been charged that they deny that they have done anything and Travis they they plan to um defend themselves in court okay Sarah with the breaking news tonight thank you for that Sarah we'll check in with you again soon
