Save the Chimps is a beautiful and peaceful
sanctuary, the home to 222 chimpanzees retired from the US Air Force, biomedical labs, the
entertainment industry, and the pet trade. While we do share 98.6% of our DNA with chimpanzees
it is that 1.4% that makes them so special. Their similarities led to
their lives of exploitation. Here at the sanctuary we celebrate and honor
what makes them so unique and exceptional. All our resident chimpanzees are
inspiring in their resilience. They have a remarkable ability to heal, form closed bonds, adapt, and
enjoy a second chance at life. Tonka is thriving, he now has a life full
of friendships spacious natural habitat, fresh and healthy meals, exceptional medical and
behavioral care, and daily enrichment activities. He is kind, has a beautiful and
gentle soul, and he really enjoys his time outdoors nesting and napping
in blankets and grooming with his new friends. There are over over 200 chimpanzees
in the US still awaiting a safe and protected Sanctuary life. All of these chimps
are living without the companionship, freedoms, and care they need to thrive
as a species. We're committed to opening our doors and hearts to as many
of these individuals as we can. We have the space, we have
the expertise, and we have the compassion to fulfill our mission of
lifelong care for chimpanzees in need.
