Prince George will one day have the controls of the royal family when he eventually takes over as king uh but for now he's actually taking controls of an airplane for the first time in his life yes that's correct Prince George has had his first ever pilot lesson aged 11 years old um he traveled to uh an Airfield near his home with his mother and his father um Prince William and Katherine watched nervously uh from the runway as as George went up with an instructor in a in a very small uh one engine plane for his his Maiden flight the flight itself it went well um it came George came back down to land safely and by all accounts you know he thoroughly enjoyed his time I'm told that these type of planes that George flu are specifically designed um for training young people um young people in their teens or or around George's age and it is designed like the kind of car that you would learn to drive in with a driving instructor and that it was dual controlled so he didn't have solo control over the plane but there was a proper trained instructor there um to you know to take off and to land and to and to run the airplane in the sky this was a white walam Airfield which is actually quite a nice tribute to his great-grandfather Prince Phillip who leared to fly from the same Airfield um near Maiden head in barkshire and got his wings there in the 1950s um now the Royal Family do have a long history with flying as I say Prince Phillip um got his wings when he was a man in his 30s um George's grandfather King Charles he trained in the in the Royal Air Force and his father Prince William of course he was a very successful search and rescue pilot in the RAF flying helicopters and he also flew the air ambulance in East Anglia and and just actually recently he mentioned that he did actually Harbor a desire maybe one day to get back into a helicopter and and start flying missions again even prince Andrew um he flew helicopters in combat in the Faulkland and of course Prince Harry flew helicopters um in in Afghanistan and it's not just the RO family um he has he he has uh flying in his blood through the middletons Carol Middleton and Michael Middleton his grandparents from his mother's side both worked for British Airways um now Georgia's had a really difficult year um you know he's he's he was 10 when his when his mother was diagnosed with cancer he's turned 11 he's had a difficult summer we've seen this wonderful video of his mom surrounded by her children and William to say that that that she is no longer having treatment for cancer and and this flight as I say this this this this flight with the instructor his his Maiden flight at White wolam Mayfield this came on the final day of his school holiday so it could be seen as as as a little treat for George um at the end of a difficult year but you never know this could be something that he wants to see as a as a future career and we might have another member of the role family who's looking to join the RAF
