Hi, my name is Marisa de la Torre. I'm going to talk about Figure 4 from a school closings report that I co-authored and focused on school closures that took place in 2013 in Chicago. Figure 4 shows the percent of students that enrolled in their designated welcoming school. A designated welcoming school was chosen by the district to be higher rated in indicators of school performance than the school that closed. If you focus on the two bars right in the middle of this figure, you will see that safety influenced families' decisions. Families were much more likely to enroll their children if a designated welcoming school had above-average safety compared to a designated welcoming school with average or below-average safety. This figure shows other factors that influenced families' decisions as well. This highlights the complexities of choosing a school. Families, in addition to school performance, families value many other factors when thinking about where to enroll their children. Thank you for listening.
