welcome to the desert and inside Chase Field in Phoenix MLB the show with a good one coming at you it's the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks [Music] all right we'll be back to get this one started after [Music] this just about set and out the hill in this one number 32 Chris what should we keep an eye on here with him well they're going to be a lot of balls in play because of the ground ball rate important that the defense stays engaged in the game I think it's critical Tempo is there if you work quickly it helps the field behind you to stay engaged to make those plays and help you get through the Innings and that one is lifted in the air Carrol moving under it and there's one [Applause] away time now for Dave Roberts lineup for the Los Angeles Dodgers all right singy how about all the talent in this lineup they're deep first and foremost but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else it's uh very intelligent the way that they use their team and I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams especially in a big game big series quick start to this afternoon's action two gone batting third the first basem number five Freddy Here Comes Freddy Freeman up to hit ball to strike the pitch next offering misses down and [Applause] away just missed to Oscar Hernandez up next for the Dodgers [Applause] the 3-1 they say he went three and [Applause] two lifted in the air right center field Carol moves towards it makes the grab and that'll end the inning Dodgers go down quietly and now Arizona gets its first opportunity in a scoreless ball game it's back here in the desert and taking the ball for the Dodgers number 70 what do you got on him Chris he may not dominate but he always keeps the club in the game if you can score runs you have a really good chance to win with him on the mound [Music] today stepping in is the switch hitting Short Stop peraldo Pomo not short [Music] [Applause] [Music] stop the wi in the pitch and that misses off the outside [Applause] edge that one lace the center in a base hit man aboard on the lead off single showed some really nice patience in that atad work himself into a good count that's about as textb as it gets got his stride blad out of the way early stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front man that was like he was in the cage Hitting off a t this is Corbin Carroll the two1 in the air out towards right center and that one hops the wall Pomo rounds third headed for the plate the throws offline he's safe and it's one nothing well that was one of those high percentage Advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher just a beautiful triple from start to finish got a pitch he could drive turned on it and hammered it out front into the Gap right out of the box I love how he was hustling and I think he knew he was going for three as soon as it touched [Applause] down one two now that one drifts in [Applause] side and it's filled up really good take especially with two [Applause] strikes and down on strikes goes gor H one gone here it's a good breaking ball there just off the corner where you can't really do much damage but it's close enough to where you've got to protect and he just couldn't find a way to fight at all that misses the zone and the count is two and two Carol stands at third with one gone in the inning next one misses three and two now [Applause] [Applause] at the belt and fires swing and a miss struck him out the high heat too much on that one well he just had no answer for that hard inside fastb right there just blew it by him and not every pitcher likes work inside especially with two strikes they don't want to hit a batter and waste an opportunity to put him away but if you can locate that fast just like he did most hitters aren't looking for it and it becomes very difficult to get a piece of in the air pretty deep out to center field and that'll do it Arizona hits the board on this RBI triple it's now one- nothing major league baseball is on the and welcome back top of the second here's teoscar Hernandez herandez the wi of the pitch good eye right there two ball one strike [Applause] swing and a miss and that is strike two well and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that he's got to get a better pitch to hit can't connect on the curveball struck him out oh that's a curveball that I'm sure he wants back at the plate two strikes sort of pitch you're hoping for a bit of a mistake and I'd say in a very hitable location but clearly the break was enough to get him to swing through it and now it's Gavin Lux here's a one1 [Applause] [Applause] ball fouled off he was late some real good life going through the Zone on that one one down Bas is empty missed inside with the [Applause] Curve foul we'll see another payoff pitch and a swing in a miss and there's two away he's really good hitting the baseball the other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had him fool and here comes Tommy Edmond check swing and he held up [Applause] and a 2-1 on the way and another [Applause] ball 3-1 is on the way this one popped up Suarez puts it away and that'll do it nothing do it for the Dodgers here and it remains one nothing [Music] back here at Chase Field and now the center fielder Jake mcarthy and a pitchy and now two and [Applause] one and that one just missed off the outside edge Gary Simmons has the plate Duty in this one well with Simmons it's not always your standard Strike Zone boo it kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others but I think the important thing is he doesn't get labeled as inconsistent so you got to stay ready up there and that one in the air center field km calls it in and there's one away yeah one of those umpires you just have to know what to expect right exactly aeno Suarez up to the plate now here's a [Applause] strike Off the Mark there two and two it's a good [Applause] take the why to kick the pitch and now it's filled up keeps the back going with a foul [Applause] ball in the air left field Hernandez settles underneath it puts the squeeze on it two down batting a the second basem the batter now Kevin Newman new he has consistently been one of the best in the sport against lefties and yet the righties give him trouble you know you don't want to be labeled as that left field way back there bangs off the wall throw cut off to Second not going to get him he's in there seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there anytime you smoke a ball off the wall you kind of think about what it could have been but obviously you have to be happy with that result so two down next up for the Diamondbacks Jose Herrera the two- one swings and lines a base hit into left field now a long throw home the Run comes in to score from second it's two nothing everything came together for him nice line drive to the PO sidel there but he didn't spin off of it that's the key you still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that so back to the top of the Arizona lineup haraldo Pomo now at the plate a switch hitter batting right the one- one is fouled [Applause] off the pitch bals it off still one and two what a battle it's not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that walk so the batting order turns over here's Jo Otani sled out his first time this one in the [Applause] dirt so a wild pitch allows the runner to advance runner at second two down drilled to the air right field way back there and that is out out of here with one swing he quiets the crowd and we are starting over it's 22 that was blasted absolutely no doubt off the bat a good hitter gets pitch recognition early he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come [Applause] hard grounder into the outfield for a knock two outs runner at first Freddy Freeman up to the dish 3-2 in the air out towards left Center no throw here first and third now with two out the throw is offline and he's in to score it's 32 comes through with the RBI these days most outfielders play pretty deep and I'm not sure if that was a factor there or not but off the bat you're thinking it's going to be a pop out and it just kind of nestled into that spot where no one was able to get to it and now teoscar Hernandez next pitch misses and a count two and one [Applause] slapped [Applause] foul Freeman off of first with two away next pitch is downstairs 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch swing and a pop off in foul gra Suarez settles under it and makes the play and that's out number three three runs for him here and they move ahead we move on to the bottom of inning number three it's the Dodgers three and the Diamondbacks [Music] two as we go to the last of the third and now here's the speed threat outfielder Corbin Carroll well after scoring runs this is where you're you're looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats and a ground ball to First Freeman takes it to the bag one gone bottom of the third in now batting Le Fiel Lord and it's lordis Gorel Jr he was a strikeout victim his first [Music] time here comes a pitch strike two I think he was sitting off speed there ground ball Freddy Freeman he takes it on his own and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third now batt the first Josh Bell at the plate now struck out swinging his first time right two balls at a strike here comes and that one pulled [Applause] [Applause] foul here's the two- two fouls that off to the left and will do it again and and he deals off the outside edge with that one and now it's filled [Applause] [Music] up swing and a miss struck him out and good work there as he gets a one two three and the Diamond Backs down in order and it's still a 32 ball game back here in the desert here's the second basement Gavin Lu Gavin Lu left-and hitter Waits slice the other way that's a base hit he was all over that one that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay and now they've got some speed on first so we see if they try to get him into motion Tommy Edmond at the plate he's over one and the pitch got him swinging got away with that curveball no doubt about it it passed right through the heart of the strike zone and he just couldn't get the bat on it when you strike out on one like that that's when you start having conversations with yourself and they're not usually very friendly and now it's Max munzy rolled out to Second and in his first at bat not even close there now two balls in a strike Lux at first one [Applause] gone swing and a miss and now two and two activity in the Arizona Bullpen Justin Martinez up and throwing for manager toy lello two two now swings through it for the K he swung over top of the curveball all interesting he's looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single backto back strike out so they haven't been able to move that runner up get him in scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring I tell you good job so far on the mound he just needs one more out here's km now he struck out swinging at his first at back we talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offense aside for just a second Chris it's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most here's a two- one and there's a ball well he gets the balls that get by most people at that position just really impressive because there certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they've got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away and a popup right side foul territory Bell under this one puts the squeeze on that one and that's the third out no runs one hit no errors and a man left we're Midway in the fourth it's the Dodgers three and the Diamondbacks two welcome back bottom four now it's the DH Randle gritch and what makes him even quicker is the fact that he's so dialed in on the pitch as it's moving through the Hitting Zone he can see how that hitter's lined up what he's trying to do and where that pitch is going to end up which gives him that really quick first step and that's why he makes so many great plays got him and there's one down it's almost like he's telling the guys in the bullpen stand down I got this so up next Jake McCarthy oh for one so far [Music] the swing in a miss two balls two [Applause] strikes that one missing [Applause] inside foul ball and it remains a full [Music] count and the pitch and he walked him that's up there Ball Four now a great back and forth and that it bad he had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow B he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now I couldn't have done it the pitch ball inside he don't want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that [Applause] [Applause] one base hit center field lead Runner around second and they'll have Runners at the corners after a one- out single well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count watch base hits like that all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league just a nice line drive into center field and here comes the Dodgers manager to the mound pitching change coming number 70 out of the game just never found his Groove wasn't able to settle in new Arm coming on back in a moment here's a new pitcher from the then number 78 still a lot of game left and this game could go either way so this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later Innings oh and the Zone doesn't get the call two balls in a strike the last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground but I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone they'll be pitching for a double play in this spot two and one now that one the other way down the fine and it's foul I think ultimately you want to tie him up get the ball in on the plate so that he can't get the barrel to it and hit it to the Outfield and that skips into dir what a layoff they pitch down [Applause] this one lifted in the air left field Hernandez settles underneath it brings it in runner tags for home throw is offline and he scores back even it's 33 there you go nice little RBI there it's a graded bat got the job done next to hit for Arizona Jose Herrera singled and drove in a run his first time through 2-1 pitches in there and the count is [Applause] even that one missed great RBI spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so something in the Gap should definitely score it haraldo Pomo to bat [Music] [Applause] next fouled off again and it remains three and two Suarez leads off first with two down to the inning hacks and misses it's a strike out so a runon one hit no errors and a man left we played Four all tied up at three a [Music] piece Justin Martinez will take over here and this guy can bring it velocity wise number 63 and welcome back top five John shabi with Chris Singleton and leading it off Austin [Applause] Barnes got it by him for the K not the best location with the fast ball on strike three but when you're pumping High 90s you'll get away with some of those more margin for error you know the fast Ball's become such a huge strikeout pitch in the sport I think a lot of it has to do with all the attention and emphasis on improv spin rates these fast balls are just exploding out of the pitcher hands and jumping through the Zone next offering is in for a [Applause] strike back to the bound and they get Otani for the out now batt the right field the right-hander gives up the two out walk one of the things about that two out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so ball down the line or into and two now gets a piece there we'll do it again 32 now and there's a fly Ball Deep right field and that one hops the wall now around second going for third the relay throw he's in there well most would have a double out of that but for a leak speed like his that's an automatic double he's thinking how do I turn this into a triple and that's exactly how you do it here's guriel and the pitch one he pulled it hard into the Outfield and even when you keep it on the ground it feels great when you hit a missile like that and now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first no outs runner at first Gavin Lux steps to the plate for the Dodgers hard ground ball for a base doot lead Runner to Second so two on and nobody out couple of singles back to back I really Like That Swing Man he didn't just push it the other way through thei he drove it that way and it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box got a pitch he liked and he got it done now a pretty big at back coming up with a chance to even this ball game up first and second no outs here's the short stop at the play Tommy Edmond and the rander deals [Applause] now he can't squeeze it behind the plate tag safe and a wild pitch and both Runners are in scoring position well boo it's already been a tough start to this inning as it is and that wild pitch is going to make things even tougher two men in the scoring position now still with nobody out so this really becomes a strikeout situation on the mount the two two on the way popped up first Bas side Herrera has a beat on it one away oh that's a frustrating a bat right there big opportunity and just missed it I know he wanted to do some damage next guy I'll have to pick him up now on the M for the Diamondbacks AJ puff and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the Lefty hitter coming up I think it's a good move I know I never liked when opposing teams did facing a left-handed pitcher and what you tell yourself is that want to stay Square to the plate try to hit the ball over the short Stop's head the Lefty ready and a one one and that's too high you know this guy's great speed is in the back of that pitcher's mind if he can get on it's going to give him one more thing he's got to think about two- one pitch is in there and the count is even runner at third two away got him looking and that is that he's in a tough spot had to make a great pitch did it got the strike out gets out of the jam clearly he's happy with those results [Music] [Applause] first base with the quick free pass and now Jake McCarthy [Applause] theol [Applause] is the one- one is fouled off with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base try to stay out of a double play here leftand batter weights swing and that ball smashed on a line km pulls it down and he makes the catch and there's one down the B the third Bas heo heyo Suarez up to hit now really nice swing in his last batch sh a line drive into center [Applause] field pitch misses now two balls in a strike and that's in dir B with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt a good secondary lead doesn't have to get away from the catcher but if you're anticipating based off the trajectory get yourself into scoring [Applause] position Che swing now will look down to First and no swing it's Ball Four [Applause] so they turn to the Lefty in this spot Alex VI Angeles kicks and fires [Applause] out front rip [Applause] [Music] foul the 32 is off the outside edge and that is ball four well the stage has been set for this offense fve it's all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here the p pitch just off the outside part of the plate at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot anything but the inning ending double play boo Line Drive caught throw behind the runner they've got him doubled off Diamond Back strand a pair this game's all tied at four [Music] Ryan Thompson gets the call from the pen Austin Barnes steps to the plate for the Dodgers a strike out and a [Applause] walk on the ground out to short sends it to First and the lead off hitter set down to open the seven back to the top of the Dodgers order sh Otani up to the dish he's already to this [Applause] game swings and misses and the count one and two the Diamond Backs with some movement in the pen Kevin GLE up and loosening in the [Applause] pen righty to the plate out towards Right Center that's well struck and into the pool it's out of here he blasts one out to right he's done it again his second Homer of the game and they grab the lead it's 5-4 singy the ball is jumping off his Bat yes it is tons of loud contact man it's been impressive he's going to have nightmares about that Pitch Perfect execution it's not supposed to produce that result he got hurt by a really good one there but even a better swing at the plate now it's mukie bets he has as they like to say light Tower Power not a big guy but a big swing and thunder in that bat swings and misses and the count one and two [Applause] right-hander kicks deals that's toward Center McCarthy trying to get there no trouble here puts it away for the out two down it's a good recovery though after giving up the Home Run not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that and next for La Freddy Freeman one for three [Applause] 1- now he caught it behind his back it's there and that's a great play one scor is in the inning coming on this solo home run and the home team down a run you're watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the [Music] show Lake Tran comes on now and we all know about a slider it's just filthy man and one of the better ones in the game I'd say spin rates high and it just breaks a ton number 49 lake so the lineup flips over haraldo Pomo getting ready to [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hit falling behind two and one the Dodgers Bullpen with some action Michael copc getting loose out there Honeywell warming up as [Applause] well the 2-1 he swings and fouls one [Applause] off two and two swings through it in that's a strikeout a big first out here in the seventh V of the punch out yeah it just does so much to change the Outlook of an important inning like this when you got the lead off hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this so strikeout really puts them on their heels so digging in Corin Carroll right-handed reliever swing and a Tapper that rolls foul trying to keep good speed off the bases [Applause] line drive base hit oh that certainly feels good when you can win the atbad after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there everything was on time and flew it in that swing got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it in center for the knock those always feel good and now let's see if they force some action with good Wheels on the bases Tryon keeping an eye on him good speed on the base PA he handles the bat very well I wouldn't be surprised if the skipper puts on some type of hit and run or a run and hit bounced out to short Edmond to second on the first save so they get one but a really nice try there tough play right there didn't really have enough time to set his feet and make a strong accurate throw had to rush it but he got it off and he got it there in time to get that out at second base here's Josh Bell [Applause] two1 now and there's a strike on the outside corner well in this situation The Hitter knows that he's got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base so if he can't do that keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit but you got to stay within [Applause] yourself two outs next offer misses down and Away Randle gritchen on deck for Arizona and ball for to a board so close to getting out of it right there but this inning still has life Ryan brazer taking over on the mound these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close there's not much margin for error but at the same time there's a reason they're put in these situations Rand gritch now big spot two out both the tying and goahead runs are a board and that one ripped to left Hernandez makes the grab that is the inning excellent work out of the Dodgers Bullpen there eighth inning coming up it's the Dodgers five and the Diamondbacks [Music] four ready to begin the eighth now it's the Dodger cleanup hitter teoscar Hernandez tar Hernandez [Applause] at the belt and fires and he pumps it a strike you know these Dodgers digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they're taking we've heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one haven't we I mean they've launched six hits at 90 plus exit velocity and that doesn't happen by [Applause] accident ground ball left side throws across the diamond and Hernandez is out the batter second B Gavin and the batter down Gavin Lux really good piece of hitting last time going to the opposite [Applause] field and a pitch late on that fast ball [Applause] [Music] the two two caught him looking for the k they just ripped a page out of the Greg Maddox Playbook throw that pitch at the hip and just watch it jump back over the inside part of the plate tell you what you are baffled expecting that to almost hit you and then end up as a called strike next to hit Tommy Edmond one one check swing appeal down to third nope he held back the next pitch misses three and [Applause] one 31 and he couldn't come up with it well he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot hit didn't offer at it now he has somebody to worry about over it first Joe manip gets the ball now and this could be a pretty critical point in this game they're hoping he's the guy to keep him within Striking [Music] Distance Max Muny at the [Music] dish throw over to First and he's back in easily Edmund the runner at first with two gone [Applause] [Music] [Applause] snap throw to first and he's back in standing the onew outside two stri [Applause] step off throw to first Edmond gets back easily kicks andand deal and a swing in the Miss and that's that so the Dodgers leave one as they hold on to a 5-4 lead bottom of the eigh here's the center fielder Jake McCarthy the one-1 oh that pitches out activity in the bullpen for the Dodgers Evan Phillips the anchor of the staff is getting ready to close this one [Applause] out next pitch is outside aeno Suarez waiting to hit for the Dbacks the tying run at the plate lifted in the air now the left side base hit as he pulls up short here comes the throw and now the tying run is into scoring position just a blue pit behind third right there and that's a really tough fight for a third baseman or short stop to get to and the same for the left fielder so he just found a perfect place to drop that one in right there and now crucial opportunity to tie up this game with another base [Applause] hit swing and a miss struck him out well that's always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count and as a pitcher it really allows you to start expanding The Zone guys become defensive and all of a sudden for the hitter that plate starts to get really wide what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that's what leads to the strikeout runner at second here one [Applause] gone the onew and a foul ball he stays alive [Applause] next offering misses it's two and two as a pitcher you know the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed a base hit it's probably going to be a big run so you really have to execute on the mount next offering is foul back [Applause] ninth pitch of the IAT do next Runner takes off for third now this is in the air down the line and it's stay fa in comes the run from second All Tied again 55 one of the hardest things to do in the game to stay mentally and physically ready for the big opportunity and he came through for his club right there digging in Jose Herrera on the ground the second might be two there's one on to Freddy double play so one run in the Inning on this base hit all even it at five a piece I got my blessing because the father never left him blessing he did it for the bre I kept it so remaining in the game defensively Luis goret he entered the game to pinch and now man second base and at the plate for the Dodgers Kevin km Outfield playing pretty shallow
