your home for the best college football coverage in Utah is on the KSL Sports song the Cougars hit the road for a huge matchup against SMU your home for the best coverage of cougar football is right here on 975 the KSL Sports Zone this is H ssen and Scotty CH presented by Mountainland Supply on 975 the KSL Sports Z let's do it [Music] hands and Scotty 975 the KSL Sports Zone now you got Utah in the Big 12 although this technically is not a big 12 matchup Utah taking on Baylor coming up and to help break it down he is your voice of the Baylor Bears and good friend of the program we've had him on a bunch with BYU playing Baylor and Utah playing Baylor uh John Morris again joining us John how are you man Scott doing great hands great to be on with you guys uh looking forward to making the trip your way this weekend do people down there are they getting tired of chipping JoJo bringing all the uh tourists in there are they like can you guys dial it down a little bit because you guys are wrecking Our Town listen uh you should have uh maybe you remember back the image of Waco at one point was not good uh had something to do with the branch devidians and then chip and Joe have really transformed the image of wo into something that is much better and it is amazing to me that people come from all over the country they want to just come here and see the silos and see and shop at Magnolia and do a tour around you know of houses they've done so it's pretty amazing and uh we love them you know they're Baylor grads and we love them a lot and they've brought a lot of positive uh uh attention to wo are they in the nil world is there like a chip and JoJo Collective going on should be they're not right yeah didn't they buy some rights to the field or something they have um it's a new suite area that's in the South End Zone and so we had it open for the first time this past Saturday so I think it's called I don't know it's called Magnolia sweets or something like that but I haven't even seen it finished I saw it when it was being built but uh that's that's the most recent addition uh to The Stadium from Magnolia well Baylor goes on and they get their opening win against FCS tlon State 45-3 and Di Juan fin showed up and showed out this is the transfer that's coming to Baylor and people putting a lot of their hopes and expectations in the to to product and John he played Five Seasons at Toledo he's had a lot of stats racked up tons of numbers what did you think from the seventh year senior out of Toledo sounds crazy doesn't it but we're getting that these days six year seniors and seventh year seniors and he uh he looked great and I think he's got more you know that we didn't see on Saturday because he came in here and it's a new offense for Baylor this year Jake spat is our offensive coordinator more of a wideopen spread offense and and dcoin has the skills that fit this offense really really well so our first touchdown of the game first touchdown of the Season there was an opening and dcoin ran at 39 yards for a score and thought all right that looks good and then he threw for a two or three more and just ran the offense really well so he he fits this offense really well and I think that was a great get for Baylor to get him here to so Charlton State obviously is a team that you should beat and should beat fairly easily and that's exactly what happened but did you take things from that game where you felt like okay Dave's got this thing going in the right direction there's a lot of good things we can build on from that yeah Scott I did but you know I always look at it from the positive side so uh the things that seemed to me were very positive from last week were uh they kind of did what they were supposed to do you know they jumped out to a 21 nothing lead the first quarter it's 28 to nothing at halftime and 45 5 to3 was the final so they sort of did what they should have done against Charlton State offensively and defensively and then they got to play a lot of guys that's always good they didn't get anybody hurt and uh I think to be honest they uh you know kind of cruised to the win and didn't have to open the Playbook the whole way you know so they've got some things left that they haven't shown yet on tape that they're gonna need every bit of that this Saturday so I think it was a great opener for Baylor remember last year we lost to Texas the first game at home and it unfortunately kind of set the tone downward for Baylor last season so hopefully this one works the opposite way this year John as you know we are living now in a conference that is stacked full of great running backs and there's two things you got to be able to do in this conference you got to run the ball a little bit and you got to be able to stop the run how do you feel Baylor did up front defensively stopping the run because I I do believe that there's going to be a nice battle and test against Utah in that regard yeah I think good uh and it will be much more uh stern of a test this week against Utah than it was against Charlton State they used two or three different backs and didn't you know didn't do much on the ground Charlton didn't so there's bigger tests coming but I think our guys you know they kind of held their own and held their ground there we've got some uh big guys we got a big dude 334 pounder who's a transfer from from uh Texas Southern uh Big E who is just you know kind of like a a space heater there in the middle fills up a lot of space and maybe occupies a couple of blockers so it was our first look at him in game action and I think he's going to be really good and then there's some others around him too Jackie Marshall played well defensive end uh Garmin Randolph is a big tall defensive end looks great and and he played really well also so I think for the first game given the competition that they did a really good job up front how do you feel about your ability to run the football and run it consistently with this offense um hopefully good and it it is a spread offense but the really the key to it is being able to run the ball you know um there was a kind of misconception about Baylor's offense back during the art BS days that it was pass pass pass but you know it was very balanced offense run and pass and I think this is what Jake spavital wants to do here also uh we were limited a bit we only had two healthy running backs or or of the main four running backs only two were available the other night so they got a lot of work um uh that was Richard Ree and Dawson Pendergrass but they did well and I think that also speaks to an improved offensive line which we needed the offensive line was an issue last year but I think they showed that they're better this year already just through one game so outside of what you seen from the quarterback back and outside of maybe some things defensively what what else did you feel really positive about with Baylor and their performance um just kind of their mindset you know it was just very to me it was very workmanlike that okay we should beat this team pretty handily let's go do it and they went out and did it and I I think that was good to me that was impressive and then like I said got to play a lot of guys and that's always good you know when guys can get on the field under the lights so that's good moving forward also um and so just those things to me were very were positives coming out of the first game and a lot of work to do and everybody knows that I mean everybody knows that Utah is maybe the toughest team will play all year you know and you're playing at your place we know how tough that's going to be but um it was a good opener and really sets uh sets them on the right direction headed to this game and the remainder of the schedule so you mentioned that Texas State game last year and then they they've got the lead against Utah and Utah has kind of the The Comeback late to to end up winning that game did that you know those th those combination of those two games how much did that really set back Bor in terms of you know not just physically but maybe mentally throughout the rest of the season yeah Scott I think it did I mean because all of a sudden you're off to an 0 and2 start now Utah was a game nobody picked Baylor to win last year even at our play and nobody's picking Baylor to win this week but it was all of a sudden it was 0 and two you're in a hole you know ask Florida State how they're feeling today and if you get in a hole like that right off the bat that you're not expecting um I I think it does mess with your mind and and from Baylor's perspective those were two home games also and we uh we had eight home games last year never had that before I don't think we ever will again uh and Baylor went one and seven in those home games so that was uh that was tough maybe was Utah week three or was it week two uh for some reason I thought it was two but maybe it was three you might be right but Long Island was in there somewhere and so but all that to say uh you know it was it was spiraling a little bit very early uh not so much because of the Utah loss but the Texas state loss and then combined with that Utah loss at home well John you've been a part of this conference for a bit and you know this conference well and now you're seeing it reformed with these 16 teams they went 14 and two in the opening weekend of college football give me your thoughts on the overall conference the way the way it is now the way it's rebuilt are you optimistic are you loving it are you missing the old times where you at with this thing H I love it you know I love it that uh our commissioner and I would go back to Bob bsby you know who really did a good job stabilizing things for this league when he brought in those four new schools you know that came in last year and then Brett ymark took the Baton and ran with it and have added the four schools coming in this year uh credit to those guys you know for really stabilizing our league and I love it I think they're great schools that are coming into the Big 12 Conference uh very very uh uh deep conference uh you think about every game is going to be tough for everybody and I was just looking at the schedule for this Saturday you know we got games starting at 11: a.m. Central Time so 10 mountain time and the last kickoff is at 9:30 central time you know 8:30 mountain time so we're going to have Big 12 Football and really good games and we're not even to conference yet but some really good games this Saturday so uh I love the new additions to the league I think we're in really good shape and hopefully uh you know kind of make a here in the non-conference and then start beating up on each other you know how good this coaching staff can be you know how good Dave Miranda can be um and it just it feels like uh things kind of got stuck in mud and just kind of perpetuated you know last year with with all different kinds of issues what's the mindset of the team where's the morale of the team going into this season you know really good uh given what we went through last year three and nine was the final record but then you step back and look at the uh coaching changes that Dave made and the coaches that wanted to come here you know it's not like uh they saw Baylor as a sinking ship and said why would I go there they said yeah I want to be a part of that staff of Dave randa's staff so I think that says a lot about him and a lot about their belief that things current can turn around this year and so uh and then the players I think are fully bought in to making it a better season this year here's what we did wrong last year here's what's got to be corrected let's go do it and I think that's their mindset so um really good I think mindset for this team going into this season I've been asking all the different voices and Minds that we've had on from other teams in the Big 12 their opinion on this I'm gonna throw it at you John so just take Baylor out of it obviously and I I want you to take Utah who was picked to win the conference out of it who during Big 12 media days or through the first week who's caught your eye that you think is maybe undervalued maybe not talked about enough that that is going to do great things that people don't expect right now yeah good question um I I don't know that they're undervalued but I think Oklahoma State and Kansas State uh where they picked like second and third probably in the league in the preseason right in there they're not yeah so they're not undervalued at all but I think they're going to be right there you know uh over the course of this year so those those would be the first two that come to mind certainly Utah picked to win it uh and you can see why and uh so so impressive with Coach Whittingham and what he's done for so many years there so um but the ones to answer your question that are top of mine or Oklahoma State and that's Mike Gundy who's been there as long as coach whittingham's been at Utah and then Kansas state that uh under uh Chris kman has just built a very very solid program and you know what you're going to get from those guys you know blue collar I guess uh but every game is going to be tough against them so those would be the top two that come to mind well John always fun catching up with you man appreciate it and uh thanks again for hanging out with us and have a great call should be a fun one thanks John appreciate looking forward to the trip thank you guys very much hope to see you soon bud there he is John Morris he is the voice of the Baylor Bears right here on 975 the ekl Sports Zone he's a good one and this conference has a bunch of just great personalities great minds and he's been around it for a long time yeah so he's seen it and he's happy about where the big 12 is I couldn't be more thrilled about where Big 12 is oh yeah yeah I think that this conference is Spectacular Now the highest ranked team right now is Utah climbed up to number 11 I do think that they're going to have some teams that break the top 10 I I think they should because right now the Big 10 in SEC own every one of the top 10 except for the one that Notre Dame occupies but the Big 10 in SEC they own it including Missouri at like 9 yeah eventually the Big 12 is going to break through and I think that we should see a couple of these teams start to climb up the board a little bit uh you also I think it was you that retweeted this out that um the attendance numbers over the first weekend did and and it just goes to show that that there's some big stadiums and some great fan support in the Big 12 and Utah was always near the top and by the way this isn't a knock on Utah at all but Utah was always near the top in attendance in the Pack 12 well guess what the the numbers you sent out they were like seven through eight just because they're in places where the stadiums are bigger and the fan Sports just huge right and you know BYU's number one with their massive Stadium at level Edward stadium and you go down the list I mean it's there's a lot of really big-time venues that sell out and it's crazy crazy atmospheres and the good news right now at the Big 12 is they've got quarterback play yes let me go through this so this is week one shodor Sanders checks in as the top in yardage 445 yards then you got faid at 422 you got sorby out of Cincinnati at 383 you got Baron Morton out of Texas Tech with 378 you got Josh Hoover at TCU with 353 Jake Retzloff at BYU with 348 and it kind of goes down from there you got Cam eising that checked in at number 10 in yardage play yeah and played you know a quarter one and three qu and checked in with 254 yards yeah and remember all of these quarterbacks for the most part played two and a half three quarters yeah yeah and put up some incredible numbers I was looking at the completion percentage Roco Beck threw for 77% Sanders completed 76 and a half that was 26 of 34 yeah it's not like it was 15 pass attempts right Bowman completed 73.5% Morton completed 71 Sor be 71% Rising was at 66.7% Hoover at 667 Johnson with Kansas State Avery Johnson and Matt Wells completed 66.7% together as well now he went for 153 yards he was 14 to 21 and and still played well but you hear me going through the names Scotty it's an exciting conference with some really good quarterbacks and some good quarterback play yeah it's going to be a great season oh man it's going to be so much fun such a good season yeah I'm excited about it I I went through the ratings as well cam Rising was number one in in qbr or RTG but was number one in ratings three he he was 38.9 and rlof checked in at number four at 197 so some good numbers across the board H in Scotty this is 975 the KSL Sports Zone we it's game week for the agies in the zone is getting you ready for kickoff it's a late night Saturday Showdown for the agies as they square off against USC at where are you called Derek Stevenson that is where Utah County Bob sat on a Mazda Miata an $85,000 car with his jeans and the rivets just dug right into that paint job yeah so um calling all the oldies Derek Stevenson will Snowden Brandon doen yep Jan Jorgenson host down there hell let's throw McKelly Wesley there you go we'll just get the whole crew back together I love it we've we've had some fun broadcasts all the years down there y y uh Tyler's been amazing to I know Tyler really is uh he and so many other good dudes Riv uh which is short for Riverboat yeah because he's a gambler cuz he he knows what he's doing yeah get some dirt on him yeah and come down and blackmail him he's about the only Kansas City chief fan that I like uh yeah but like you got to use it no no I I genuinely cuz he's a good person and he doesn't rub your nose in it other Chief fans like the guy down the hallway loves to rub your nose your nose and things and I yeah not a fan of his but Riv ri's a good dude all right let's get to it time for uh Sports roulette Lloyd fire up that will sit down Kobe yashi so Netflix put together the Joey chess nut versus Teek or kobashi E off yeah which has been 15 years in the making Scotty yes the last time they saw each other was 2009 and then Nathan's suspended kobashi because he tried to do his own thing so Netflix put this whole thing together and it went down last night it's called unfinished beef oh was it live or it was live oh I didn't see it oh you didn't get to see it no oh yeah it was a Netflix it's a 10 minute Hot Dog Eating Extravaganza and our boy Joey Chestnut said a world record oh kicked Kobe aashi's butt huh Joey Chestnut pounded 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes kobashi a poultry an embarrassing a humiliating 66 oh man worse than Christian Cox no kidding like if H was sitting there next to him be like you should be embarrassed kobashi kobashi's over there like these these these came from Costco they're too big my hot dogs are more meteor than your hot dogs oh man Joey Chestnut embarrassed him Joey chestnut's been around for a while too I he's just got I mean the dude's not slowing down I know and you know we talk about these healthy people get having heart attacks Dude Looks like he's what 170 yeah and he's eating so many hot dogs how does this guy not have serious health health issues uh I actually read something about how some of these people just have these crazy weird stomachs like there's a I think I've sent you some of his videos there's this guy that I don't know why maybe it's because I'm not eating as much as I used to so I'm living vicariously through other people but I actually get stuck down a rabbit hole on some of these Instagram reels of watching these competitive eaters yeah and there's this one guy who again looks like he's 160 lbs and the dude can just put it away like crazy and I'm like how is this even happening and apparently there's some studies where people are born with these crazy distended stomachs that can just contract and then they go hit the porcelain throne and yeah off it goes they're also born with a bizarre esophagus that can allow large quantities of food to pass quickly which is weird how fast they can swallow unwed food yeah cuz you and I tried to I mean you tried to pound a bunch of ice cream I tried to pound a bunch of mozzarella sticks oh so horrible it was one of the worst experiences of my life we failed miserably oh yeah it was terrible and embarrassing yeah I'm still hum humiliated uh one of my favorites that you know speaking of a large esophagus and a and a weird ability to do something is Badlands Badlands chugs that's what he's known for the lemonade yeah yeah I got embarrassed by that too that didn't end well for me he chugs sodas and lemonades and all kinds of things he's he's the world record chugging holder now that guy looks like a dude that's a competitive eater yeah he B he big boy he's a bigan but I do love bad Lan and then his iconic burp after the Chug is world renowned it's the burp hold heard around the world it is just so deep and bellish yeah I tried to do the lemonade thing we tried that one time it almost sounds like a lion's roar yeah you did good you did really good I you did on the lemonade than I did on the ice cream started out great and then it just all of a sudden when you hit that wall you're done you started out and I was like he's going to do this you realize if you tried that now you'd go into a coma oh geez yeah I I would we would be pulling you out of sugar induced coma yeah no it would well I think even that was sugarfree that you brought in might have been but uh oh yeah that would not end well but the competitive eating kobashi just humiliated he might we might never hear from him ever again nor should we nor should we yeah after you get he what was it 84 to 66 83 to 66 883 oh jeez that's oh hey that's like a 49er bronos Super Bowl right there it is hey and Netflix nice jobs Netflix imposed a new rule that they couldn't dip their hot dog buns in water so they they they couldn't dip him in water and so that changed tactics H why I wonder why I don't know you know what honestly I'm glad they did because it's gross watching that oh I mean it's gross watching it anyway but but seeing these guys dip it in water and then Chow Down on those yeah they announced kobashi at 67 so wait a minute so he sets a world record without even dipping them in water yeah geez yeah I don't know like maybe that doesn't help as much as a world record by a stretch he beat his own record but it was a world record by by stretch but um they they awarded kobashi 67 and then what they do is they take the remnants that are on your chest or on your chair and they weigh it and if if it equals a hot dog then they actually they actually subtract I know why it that's so funny they actually subtract good for them the remnants and so kobashi had one subtracted oh for the the weight of the remnants on his person oh jeez how that now that's a bad job kobashi I'm going to need your shirt and I'm going to need to scrape off all these extra hot dogs and put it on a scale that's that's an internship you don't want folks that guy with the oh man that guy with the blade at Roose Chris shows up on your shirt all right one more Lloyd spin it [Applause] a terrible loss for the Youth so here's uh K Whittingham talking about the miserable terrible unacceptable loss for the youths yeah season ending and you know if there is a silver lining he will be able to get another year you know we haven't had that discussion yet it just depends on what he what he wants to do and how he wants to handle it but from what feedback I have gotten it would be pretty much a slam dunk to get him another year if he wants to go down that road Keenan Johnson lost for the season at that corner position and there are a lot of different options Elijah Davis came in and replaced Johnson during the game but you heard coach talk about potentially will Snowden and there's two or three others Tay Johnson who can step in there there's they've got Personnel it's just you don't want to lose Elijah a lot of experience there too yeah you don't want to lose Keenan no Keenan is uh Keenan is one of those guys that just understands it he gets the whole yeah the whole Ro of it and you lose him game one yeah and you saw his reaction out on the field it's just like it breaks your heart because you know I can't imagine and I know you never dealt with it to that degree you dealt with a couple little injuries here and you knew what was it the wrist injury or thumbs and thumbs and you knew that was going to impact your ability to make a living in the NFL but oh breaking the hand yeah yeah but but I can't imagine like if you're a senior or you're going into your last year and you're trying to make that last impression for the NFL and the first game of the year your knee is shredded or whatever the case is whatever happened whatever happened and you're like I have to start all over again and the rehab and everything else that goes along I mean I can't imagine what that just how miserable that feeling is it takes a warrior mentality and um you know I've I've gone through this where I've got so many kids that play sports and play different levels of sports and you know you go through like real let down moments yeah and what I found so helpful is the Kobe Bryant special just sit down and listen to Kobe that that would be my biggest advice to any of these kids because to me the the physical comeback is one thing but the physical comeback is doable yeah it's the mental comeback yep and hell I don't even deal with torn knees anymore or torn Achilles but I I do deal with the stresses of being a dad and and a professional and and this job is stressful it's a great job but it's it's a stressful job and the play-by-play duties and color duties they're they're really stressful those eat my guts up pretty good and so just sitting down and watching the Kobe Bryant special and him being like stop being a punk yeah stop being a crybaby stop being a wimp oh you think it's over for you huh you think it's time to pull the plug for you fine pull it it's better for me yeah you pull the plug it's quit makes it easier for everybody else and I I I love Kobe yeah Kobe Bryant has become one of the most inspir inspirational forms to me since it's passing yeah it's kind of strange but get your mind right because it's the rebuild is going to be more mental than it is physical hey and this is what's great when you get back the payoff is undescribable yeah yep it's going to mean a little bit more the payoff is so magnificent when you return and you're like and you start to get used to it and you're like that this thing's going to hold yeah and I think I'm going to be okay and here I am I'm back and they're excited I'm back so fight back Keenan get yourself back on that field man you still got some football in your life hands with Scotty 975 the KSL Sport Zone will wrap up this bad boy next right here on the Zone it's game week for the cougar cougars and the the last segment we we may have probably should have talked about this a little earlier but yesterday Brody and I my uh my 13-year-old son we were talking about Donuts okay and uh and we were talking about our favorite kinds of donuts I voted in your poll and um so I put out two different polls I probably should have put out multiple because uh I kind of combined like you know chocolate and maple frosted duts together jelly and cream fi together but guess what in terms of percentage of vote came out number one it's going to be the it's going to be the uh chocolate maple glazed Maple bar yeah came out number one yep uh number two was an old-fashioned dut yeah and number three was just a traditional glazed donut so I could get on board with that Fritter came in dead last uh no uh powdered sugar came in dead last CU I know you had Fritter on there yeah Fritter got 16% of the votes so you know how much I love a two three day old Fritter yeah love a two or three day old Fritter with some chocolate milk and I throw it in the microwave and heat it up a little bit soften it but it still has the crunchy edges I love it it's weird but I love it no but no hate if you if you forced me on this and you're like all right you don't have the two or three day old frit you got a fresh Fritter yeah I'm going to take the maple glaze I'm going to take the maple bar but I don't like the hard crunch yeah por on Maple I like the thick puffy it's like a puffy Maple it's like a maple cream it's not a maple glaze yep I'm with you yep that to me is the ultimate you put that on a nice soft bar and there's one place that I know does the the more of the fluffy cream than the guys and that place is the ultimate yep well you know you know I I love that blueberry from that one place it shall remain nameless but if David ever get some on board to advertise man I will just pimp the heck out of that place cuz it is my favorite dut on this planet hey and officer Tony this is not a green light to bring us Donuts officer Tony no I know you you're going to hear this and you're going to bring us in donuts please don't hands and I are trying to make Better Life Choices we love you like a brother that is the hardest thing to turn down for me you could give me a 50 oun T-bone steak or that doughnut and I'd be like you're taking the donut I I have a hard time what did you vote for uh what did I vote for yeah well uh for me it's a uh out of the list I had it was the uh like a a cream Bavarian cream oh Boston cream doughnut well I do love the Bavarian cream yeah when I was younger that was my go-to that was the hit but some about a maple bar Dave what's your doughnut of choice if you get a choose well when when Hans talked about fritters have you had a raspberry Fritter yeah oh yeah yeah those are good that's money on the golf course at like 6:12 in the morning with a Gatorade you can't those are really good that makes you feel like the whole world's gonna be okay what's the cougar tail is that a maple bar that's Maple bar that would be that would classify as a maple bar that's too much maple gigantic Maple bar that's like a yard of maple too much yeah it's you there's actually no such Wilford Brimley is going to say hey maybe you should dial it down a little bit Yeah my favorite line for one of my favorite movies it's a jelly it's a jelly it's a jelly yeah it's got to have something in there so the Bavarian cream you know Strange Brew look at you H we're Strange Brew fans here so we're on the same page America First Credit Union it's been a blast to have you in
