e coming to you live from Southern California Major League Baseball on tap it's the Chicago Cubs taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers with Chris Singleton I'm John chambi Chris one guy having a big year for this club leading the team at home runs and runs bad at in Christopher Morell yeah boo he's one of the pillars of this lineup and when you have a guy like that that's so consistent and so productive you want to make sure you can do whatever you can to get him to the plate get him as many at bats as you can in a ball game if you do that you got a really good chance of scoring a lot of runs first pitch coming your way next so almost ready to get underway Today's starting pitcher you shobu Yamamoto been a pretty impressive first year in the big leagues for him well he's a rookie of the year candidate and what I'm impressed by is his ability to make quick adjustments the control and command has been there something you don't see in young pitchers but I think he's got more than just Rookie of the Year potential but perhaps a sa young in the future nicoo leading things off and takes a strike next pitch is outside one1 got the back going too soon it's strike two rander kicks deals fights that one away still one and two and the righty deals swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left Center outman makes the grab one [Applause] down time now for the Chicago Cubs lineup a guy who's been huge for them over the last month plus Patrick wisdom oh boo he's got great power just to every section of the ballpark man I love watching guys like this who can give it a ride to the opposite field or go dead center I mean that's really hitting when you can hit and drive the ball up the middle other way look out keep an eye out on this guy when he digs in I wouldn't be surprised to see him launch one in this game Mike tman in now takes ball one off the plate and that's in for a [Applause] strike one out bases is [Applause] empty in the air fairly deep to right field Hayward makes the grab two down batting third the centerel number two out space is empty here's Cody Bellinger this is a true five tool guide not very many of them out there but when he's on the field you can't take your eye off of him [Applause] swing and a highfly ball down the left field line but hooking foul fans come to the ballpark to watch him play and in baseball to have such a talented player going out there every day and putting on the show that he does just a joy to watch [Applause] ball one and takes low for ball one hits for average power the ability to feel the arm and then the speed really impressive bals it off still one and two the line of the pitch got and looking that's a strike out nothing happening there for the Cubs and now the Dodgers get a crack at it no score back after this on the show and we're back and now here's the starter for the Cubs Javier Assad well that whip is just below the league average and that's a good thing in this case not allowing too many base runners so on most days he's going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win and I expect to see that from him in this one today and now here is mie bets he's a guy who does it all with the lack of contact in today's game this guy hits for contact so he delivers average but there's on base and slugging too this is off the inside ball one early in the count you have to be real careful because of that power but then if this hitter gets a strike or two on him he's still very comfortable because he has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball he's a threat deep into the count as well turns and fires the BS that one down the line and it goes just foul two balls in a strike here it comes and that one fouled off [Applause] and now two and two hard hit to Third and Bets is set down batting second here's the Dodgers lineup now this is a ball club that can really slug lots of homers lots of extra base hits and Chris that of course a huge part of success in the standings for this group well if you're going to be successful in today's game you've got to be able to hit the ball over the fence just defensively very hard to find the holes and when you're talking about guys you know coming out of the bullpen throwing 95 and above very difficult it's hard to string together two three four hits to score Those runs so definitely critical to hit those homers get the extra base knocks and that's exactly what they've been doing sh Otani stands in now looks at that one inside and downstairs power is such a big part of the success that we see with the good team teams in the league right now and even in the postseason and that one finds its way through so a man aboard now with one [Applause] away man at first and up to the plate is Will Smith [Applause] that one blasted deep to right Suzuki ranging back and it's caught just in front of the [Applause] wall batting four the third baseman mad and now it's Max [Applause] mzy Assad with a move to First Otani back in [Applause] and a good eye there you have to be creative pitching against bad ball hitters you got to add some velocity subtracted times just avoiding the heart of the plate isn't always going to be enough guys like this can hurt you with pitches you wouldn't expect them to swing at inside just missed two gone but the goahead run is at first here in game one of this three game set the 2-1 rips that one to right Suzuki makes the catch and that ends the inning so the Dodgers leave one scoreless after one [Applause] top of the second here's some real power at the plate Patrick wisdom it's great watching Yamamoto pitch in Major League Baseball but he played against MLB Talon before he signed with the Dodgers he was a standout at the Tokyo Olympics and in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and helped Japan win gold medals in both and fires in a fast ball at 95 [Applause] next pitch is outside Joe McDonald doing the home play duties here well Joe is an interesting one I'm always trying to figure out what exactly his zone is feels like it kind of moves around from game to game sometimes inning to inning swings through that one for strike two yeah I think that's fair I don't think he's ever way off with his balls and Strikes but yeah I don't think it's easy to Define what his zone is like you said this to center field outman moving under this one and it's caught for the [Applause] out Danby Swanson stands in you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list and a foul ball and you played behind guys and they loveed having your speed out there defensively one of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those Elite Defenders behind them out to short BT whips it to First an swans it is set down batting the third B number five Christopher Morel the next Cub to hit Morel he's definitely a talented player he can hit the ball a mile and uh they're just hoping for him to have some more consistency so he can establish that next level here in the big leagues that's outside and it's one and0 hog and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn't either hitting wise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you're talented in that way and this is what this guy does the next offering misses now two balls in a strike right and as well lots of pop in that b so you combine the slug with really good defense two balls two strikes to count with two [Applause] outs and a swing and a miss and that's that and the Cubs are down in order we'll go to the bottom of the second no score four we head to the bottom of the second and now James [Applause] outman here the right hater back to work that one finds the Zone strike one ripped on the ground a second in time to wisdom one up one down no left tar hernand here's teoscar [Applause] Hernandez ball one and a pitch inside nothing nothing here in the bottom of the second righty to the plate and there's a foul [Music] ball and the pitch sh got him swinging slider got him for strike three oh that slider was way out of the zone and for me it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand not tracking it into the zone and then also being a little bit anxious not confident in your two- strike approach and so when a guy's in that position you get him to commit early and a lot of times you get the swing and Miss as you did right [Applause] there Freddy Freeman in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike two out space is empty foul ball the pitch to third Morel tosses to First and Freeman is retired tired and it's a one two3 inning Dodgers go down quietly we'll move to ball here's a one-w swings through that one it's a strike out stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there and I don't mean to laugh but that's a tough one I mean pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch I mean it looks like a fast middle end kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to whereas you can't get your hands through and the barrel to it not much you can do unless old and he was a 10th round pick back in 2013 the wi of the pitch and a good fast ball to start him off at strike one well he's looking great so far it helps with over 80% of your first pitches or there's one away defer fielder number Bellinger up to hit struck out looking his first time Bellinger's won a variety of Awards in his career hasn't he I mean he's been named Rookie of the Year MVP and comeback player of the year now throwing a few Silver Slugger Awards and he has himself quite the trophy [Music] cabinet right through there for a strike all tied up top half of inning number four [Music] [Applause] one down base is empty swing and a miss at the splitter and it's a strike out that's about as nasty of a splitter as you'll come across especially in terms of movement I mean that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment he keeps it down it's just so tough to put wood on stepping in the long ball threat Patrick wisdom and there's a strike no three Cubs are down quietly and we are still scoreless back here in La John chabby and Chris Singleton with you and leading off the bottom of the fourth show Otani H now the right hander ready to go still no score pitch misses and that is ball one you know these Dodgers as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the play so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they're chasing outside of the strike zone you can't do much of anything with those locations and that's been true again [Applause] [Music] today lifted in the air out to left could be extra bases now he turns and heads for second he is safe yeah wasting no time he's two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle seriously we're starting with this [Music] already Will Smith the next to hit fly to right his first time swinging a foul straight back and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that Strike Zone and Beyond and they just keep eating right out of your [Applause] hand runner at second nobody out that's ripped base hit headed for the plate the throw in it's offline the Run comes in and it's one nothing well the strike first as he gets the job done to bring home the run pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field Gap and I'm sure he's going to be watching that one back on video because that's the kind of Swing you want to bottle so many positives that led to that knock Muny digs in he's over one that one finds the Zone strike one the pitch just off the outside edge and one and one one on nobody out a run in we're here in the bottom of the fourth [Music] struck him out looking the center field and at the plate for the Dodgers James outman grounded out his first time up fouled off he was late [Applause] old one now swings through that one good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand looks so good and then when the time gets in the hting zone hard to get the barrel to it next offering is down low one and two the count really good take especially with two strikes and and that just misses he's really tightening up his Hitting Zone with two strikes here I love it and that skips in dirt well with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt a good secondary lead doesn't have to get away from the catcher but if you're anticipating based off the trajectory get yourself into scoring position [Applause] pitch and a swing in a Miss that's the second out here's the left fielder teoscar Hernandez went down on strikes his first time through [Applause] hernandz misses inside one and0 one [Music] at the belt and fires Hernandez started after it tried to hold up now a look to first he went around according to Carl Dixon and here it comes and a ground ball to first he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it well they pick up one run on the RBI single it's now a one nothing ball game and we're back we go to the top of the fifth and here is Dan B Swanson swans the pitch this one in the air right field and that's a fair ball and that knock bumps his hitting streak into double digits is he's hitting 10 straight yeah and on a nice trajectory average going up OBP everything he's doing at the plate right now just seems to be working Christopher Morell the next cup to hit he struck out swinging in his first hitb in the air pretty deep out to center field gets there he's under it makes the grab [Applause] up next for the C the right fielder SE Suzuki and now the right fielder seya Suzuki first time up was a pop [Applause] out Yamamoto checks the runner Swanson back in on a dive all one low way to lay off that pitch down and the right-hander deals no that misses and now two and0 last two pitches have been down in the zone pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play but in this count he's going to have to give in Elevate his pitches and get back into this at bat the two- is in for a ball one strike tying run is at first and we're at the top of the fif F off foul with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right [Music] here and he deals runner on the goal and a foul ball he stays alive [Applause] 2 two now that's the third off balance speed there's one what a double play that was inning over well we can never overstate it pitcher's best friend right there double play gets out of the jam saves some pitches we head to the bottom of the fifth Freddy Freeman up to the dish Freddy Freeman Assad back to work ball one there one [Applause] wouldn't chase that time well usually a high level of confidence when you're facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 2 has put himself in a really good spot fast ball for a strike well he went inside a couple of times and now outside hitter's not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch and lines out to third That Swing right there tells me he's seeing the ball pretty well I know it didn't produce a hit but he made Sol contact and that's all you're looking to do anytime you're at the plate and stepping in is the Speedy Gavin Lux 0 for one with a fly out and the first pitch misses for ball one just missed Bas is empty one away last half of inning number five lifted in the air right field Suzuki has a beat on it they got it for out number two now batting right field J two out bace is empty the batter now Jason Hayward his first at bat was a strike out flyball down the line Suzuki has a beat on it huls it in to end the inning so up now for Chicago Ian hat his home and away splits there as he turns on the rubber here with that good live arm delivers and there's the strike that split is a pretty nasty pitch explodes out of the hand looks like a fast ball and the bottom just falls out of it kicks and fires check swing he went too far and it's a strike [Applause] that one just misses man oh man I don't know how you take that pitch that's as close as it gets and another ball two balls two strikes the might have kicked the pitch Full Count expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff wall fouled off again and it remains three and two and a pitch that one misses so lead off walk well he earned his trip to first right there it's not easy laying off that just missed the Zone like that and it's a real discipline as well he's put a lot of work into that aspect of his game and it paid off right these days but I tell you what he's got a good one y gom's Waits with the tying run on at first and we're in the top half of the six on the ground a second might be two off balance speed there's one over to First [Applause] safe tough play right there didn't really have enough time to set his feet and make a strong accurate throw had to rush it but he got it off and he got it there in time to get tockman that one's in there going one Bo that hooks looking pretty sharp today just a solid pitching performance so far and I really think it's because of that curveball next offering is in for a strike perhaps not quite ready to hit first two pitches by him for a couple of strikes now back is against the walls going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly kick andal and that'll do it make it six shut out innings for him out there now it's the Dodgers one and the Cubs nothing back here at Dodger Stadium well we go bottom six here's mooki now and the right hter back to work and mie takes movement in the bullpen Jordan Wicks a lefty looks to be getting himself ready Brown getting cranked up as well rander kicks deals he swings and fouls one off swings here and blasts one left field that one back there get out of town and they boost their lead it that's two nothing his confidence is through the roof with the way he's been swinging it lately he's on a really good run just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone's attention got to pitch to drive short to the baseball squared it up and the back's been carried it out of here sh Otani up to the dish one of the elite home run hitters in the League this year and that one in the air center field Bellinger drifts towards it nabs it and there's a one away man Dodger Stadium is so beautiful really a gorgeous place to play baseball the weather is always perfect you know Toma sort of managed the Dodgers for more than 20 seasons and he called this place Blue Heaven on Earth you and I we had the privilege of walking past the VIN Skully broadcast booth and many times seeing him in there getting ready for a ball game when I think of this place I think plate for the Dodgers James outman we talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offenses side for just a second Chris it's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most and there's one down now batting left fielder T oscaroscar Hernandez digs in [Applause] now Wicks a 6-3 lefty he features a four seam fast ball a slider a curve and he works in a two seam B is empty one away here the bottom of the seven po foul out of play off to the right and now the Lefty here's a swing and a drive left field and he knew it that was blasted to the Moon home run number 20 on the year and they tack on to their lead it's 3 nothing maybe he starting to break out of this mini slump that's the type of swing that makes you think good things are coming his [Applause] way well I'm sure there's a big grin on his face right now boo he's probably had some of those that didn't stay fair but off the bat it looked like he was going to been fou was able to keep it in there tucked it nicely and he gets the jog around the base is good for him Freeman now the Box comes up empty with a swing there Freeman tries to check his swing now a look to Third and that's going to be ruled to swing one down base is empty and that's outside one ball two [Applause] strikes ground ball left side and that's just foul P misses outside now two and two this guy's a fun guy to watch taking it bad he just battles up there he doesn't take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away got him swinging Boi just ran out of patience there he took a couple of pitches to even that count off in two balls and two strikes but that time chased outside his [Applause] own Lu in the Box again takes a strike dangerous spot for that slider right there didn't seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break tell you what he doesn't want to throw that pitch again here's a 1-1 ball [Applause] just [Applause] missed two down base is empty but one run across here in game one of this three- game set that's hard hit in the line that's a hit he needed that one it's been a tough stretch at the plate l just a solid swing right there caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great two outs runner at first now it's the right fielder Jason Hayward and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter [Music] [Applause] up the middle they take the force out and that is the inning but the solo shot stretches their lead even further it's now 3 nothing we're at the top of the eight down the third baseman Christopher Morell Christopher and the pitch that one in the dirt and that's ball one you know these Cubs need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings they're trying to find ways to drive the ball with some Authority but it's just not happening for him so far zero extra base hits in the game so it's been tough for him to get anything going gathers and throws to first lead off man is out here in the eight couple of pitches and a quick out SE Suzuki the next comeup to hit sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through but it's a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have runners in scoring position because they put themselves [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there and that's downed away one ball one strike [Applause] next off bring is in for a [Music] strike and down on strikes picks up strikeout number seven you know Splitters aren't thrown by a ton of pitchers and one of the main reasons is that they're difficult to control and not many guys can spot them consistently where they want to but he's one of those exceptions he's found a way to Corral a split and he can place it on a dime just like he did right there half the next to hit takes ball one one ball no [Applause] strik that one [Applause] ripped and it one hops the wall and that's a double drove that ball nicely put a great swing on it and it jumped off his back kind of put it all together there and he's rewarded with the [Music] [Applause] double and in scoring position with two away Jan gos the next CB to hit one for two that one finds the corner that's strike one at second two down and we're in the top of the [Applause] eighth that misses the zone and now it's even one and [Applause] one and that one is lifted in the air and that'll fall for a base hit half on his way home he'll score easily and now just a two-run deficit puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI you know what they say he couldn't have thrown it out there any better than that and certainly the case that time just flared it back behind the second basem and dropped it in there back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup Nico Herer the next Cub to hit 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out right through there for a [Applause] strike with the tying run at the plate here in game one of this three game set swing and a popup B settles underneath it makes the play and it's out number three but the RBI single pushes across a run it's now a 3-1 ball game back here in La bottom of the E and the batter will be the short stop mie bets as the Lefty gets to work and a strike in there no ball one [Applause] strike just missed one ball one strike the pitch no just Miss with a good breaking ball in looking for that hitter to Chase and perhaps get some weak contact or a swing and miss good job on both sides that's out to center field puts it away for the out now batting the designated hit here's sh Otani he is quite an athlete I mean you look around the other sports basketball football you feel like he could thrive in one of those Sports too swinging a highfly ball out there towards left field H snags it for the second out now Patty catcher will and here's the catcher Will Smith one for three [Applause] oh great grab on the dive fires to First and they get the out well that right there was all pre pitch positioning put himself in the perfect spot to make a great play new pitcher for the Dodgers Evan Phillips well he's the guy they hope to turn to out of the PIN to lock down win so this game has gone the plan more or less let's see if he can wrap it up here and a pitch tochman stands in now and watches strike one next pitch misses and the count is one and [Applause] one swing and a highfly ball down the right field line and and a foul ball righty to the plate Line Drive caught it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control and a foul ball and the pitch that misses and it's one and one if you're on the mount right now you know you have to retire this hitter if he gets on base it could open up the floodgates for this offense to score some [Applause] runs hit hard base hit so they get a man aboard with a one out [Applause] single now Patrick wisdom a former first round pick and he's really turned into a nice everyday player that one finds the zone and it's O and one the Cubs trailing by two here to the top of the night and that one Clips the corner really good cutter that he's able to front door and back door that pitch is devastating tying run at the plate one two out to Center and that'll fall for a base hit here comes the throw and he's safe so it's first and third with one down backto back base hits these days most outfielders play pretty deep and I'm not sure if that was a factor there or not but off the bat you're thinking it's going to be a pop out and it just kind of nestled into that spot where no one was able to get to it looks like we've got a substitution at first on the pinch Run Pete Crow [Music] Armstrong and next for the Cubs Dan B Swanson the short stop takes the ball in the infield at the corners don't be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring Bellinger on third Crow Armstrong over at first with one away I think ultimately you want to tie him up get the ball in on the plate so that he can't get the barrel to it and hit it to the Outfield the pitch and there're at the knees and the count one and two big pitch right here he's going to try to make a pitch it's going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double [Applause] play at the belt and fires [Applause] Runners are at the corners one away pick off move the first pro Armstrong gets back easily base runner with a one-way lead right there all he's trying to do is get a look at the pitcher's move had no intent of stealing on that [Applause] pitch two on one out stays alive well they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone I'm sure he's kicking himself and would like that pitch again two2 [Applause] now eighth pitch of the at back coming [Applause] up swing
