Intro good afternoon and welcome to Tortilla talk I'm your host Dylan and with me today is Troy in Dallas Troy how you doing man I'm pumped football's back baby I'm doing great yeah I couldn't said it better myself Dallas it's always good to get some football in right yeah it always feels like a lifetime between uh the end of last season the start of a new I'm just so thankful it's finally here yeah and guys what a start we had uh just a little appetizer of some Week 0 - FSU VS Georgia tech football with week zero but man did it not disappoint the dogs were definitely barking this week guys as every Underdog covered and we'll start with the Florida State and Georgia Tech game Dallas I'll go ahead and throw it to you I mean a 24 to 21 finish Georgia Tech edging out Florida State what a crazy game man yeah yeah I think that was uh really interesting in just the aspect of the expectations that uh the that uh the Florida state had coming into here um I mean Georgia Tech just man handled him up and down the field on line of scrimmage uh it was really impressive uh yeah really going to be interesting H to see how the ACC plays out with Clemson playing Georgia next week you could have the two top dogs in that conference getting losses in the first week um and hopefully the Big 12 uh can hold our ground and and take care of business week ones but uh yeah really uh crazy set of games across uh the Slate yeah and Troy with all the talent on Florida State I know there was a lot of turnover um versus last year but a lot of people still think they should have handled business pretty comfortably but it seems like no matter what dju just can't succeed wherever he goes yeah I think that was my biggest takeaway from that I mean maybe he was treated wrong at Clemson I don't know but obviously he got out of there and went to Oregon State shortly after that and they had a pretty sharp season but I don't know it just never he never blew me away and even in this game same thing uh when they needed him most um just couldn't get the job done and while he completed his passes it just never felt uh great and it wasn't great right because they lost uh and even with their running backs too outside of the one big run that the uh I don't know how to say his last name but toley had like 28- yard touchdown um that was about it like and Georgia Tech just showed on the defensive line uh that they could keep up with them and that's something probably FSU wasn't expecting uh and so I don't think they were ready for that I will say in the first half um it looks like it was going to be an explosive game and I don't know if that's the first two 10 plays right they're they're scripted you know what you're going to do you know what you're going to get and so both teams score right right after that or for those 10 plays but after that slowed down quite a bit uh and so I don't know if that was something relative to the talent um it was raining a decent amount too obviously it's in Ireland as well so big game lots of people there so maybe it was nerves but it just stopped clicking after that and so I thought that was pretty interesting too yeah and I'm glad you talked about the running game because a lot of people were talking about how they just expected Florida State to run all over for Georgia Tech but in reality it became Georgia Tech looking like the much more physical team Dallas you kind of have to feel and I know we always take maybe a little too much out of week one get a little too uh too hyped yeah Florida state was probably overhyped coming in but I mean this Georgia Tech team does I mean gotta be comfortable saying that they could be a b a bow Team after this performance right yeah absolutely I mean I I I don't know like what you can take away from a game in Ireland I know there's a lot of other factors going on in that kind of game but uh I mean just at the line of scrimmage where a lot of games are won and lost uh Georgia Tech looks like they've got the dudes to do uh some damage in the ACC especially a weak ACC this year and um yeah if I'm Florida State I'm a little worried because uh yeah that stat at halftime where uh DJ what had negative one air yards on the game uh was pretty insane so so it'll be interesting to see what they do but with that kind of offense they're not going to be able to hang with some people I do want to touch on that point that Dallas had because I was uh you know I watched the game but I I uh my wife was out yesterday and and so I had my daughter by myself and uh there were times when I looked up and I was like man fsu's defense looks good and then I would look up and I was like oh man Georgia Tech on defense right now and so they were definitely swarming and and yeah you couldn't get anything going down down the field it was uh people making plays it wasn't DJ you throwing that ball down the field yeah and um I'm glad Dallas you kind of uh talked about the ACC being a little weak we'll get further into that maybe with a a game that we'll talk about a little bit later but yeah uh Georgia Tech definitely getting a big win in uh week zero almost wanted to say week one there but it's definitely a great way to start the season for them and Florida State not the best way to start Clemson has to be a little happy Miami is probably a little happy to see that happen but we'll go ahead and jump on to the next game Montana state New Week 0 - Montana State VS New Mexico Mexico what a crazy comeback here as you have one of the best FCS teams playing an FBS team Brock om menen hall now coaching New Mexico some terrible dropped passes at the end of the game for New Mexico uh Dallas I'll kind of go ahead throw it over to you I mean I know it's FCS FBS but I mean you're up that big if you're New Mexico you feel like you just have to get it done right yeah and especially being against I know it's a different caliber FCS team than a lot of guys but you got to think that you've at least got the dudes to you know run some clock and get out of there even if you got to play conservatively at that point but uh yeah that was quite the collapse um taking a loss against the FCS team to open your Seasons got to be tough yeah and Troy I think they said it best on the broadcast a lot of these teams like a New Mexico or these bad teams they almost have to learn how to win because I think this was perfect example of a team that just didn't know how to win and didn't know how to close it out yeah I think that's pretty evident with giving up 21 points uh in the fourth quarter it's the old like what do I do with my hands Ron Burgundy right now or Ricky Bobby I'm sorry same same man different character but yeah they're just standing there at the end of the game and don't know what to do with their hands uh giving up 21 points and not scoring on the other side of the ball that's pretty tough and obviously the reason they lost yeah and um you know there there was not any expectations for New Mexico this year obviously there were double digit underdogs in the game right but still when you're up there that much you just feel like you should obviously take that game but uh Choice speaking of uh different character same man Dallas was talking about a weak ACC so I'll go Week 0 - SMU VS Nevada ahead and jump into another team weak ACC SMU wow welcome to the ACC um I think the ACC is probably looking at them going uh what did we do guys because they played against Nevada and man talk about another game where a team just threw it away Nevada was up pretty much the whole game ended up falling 29 to 24 Dallas is there a I mean yes you won the game but what positive takeaway Does SMU even have from this I mean can't be much yeah I mean that's the only thing that you won the game somehow uh and uh at the end of the day I mean I guess you can kind of Spin Zone it as SMU was never going to get an at large bid in the college football playoff they have like the weakest schedule in the power four so um and their toughest game I think is against FSU at home which now looks a little easier but uh yeah as a team they're definitely not what they were hyped up to be uh you know the defensive line and that defense were supposed to be dominant they got pushed around by Nevada team that I think what had 50 plus transfers um and they just looked like the better team the entire game but again another program that just doesn't really know how to win yeah and uh Troy is I know first game of the year you can try a lot of things that obviously you won't later in the year but you got to be nervous when your team's playing a little bit of quarterback roulette to start the season right yeah and I I think Dallas touched on it perfectly with not knowing how to win I mean that was essentially what happened in this game too but with the quarterback roulette piece um with stone Jennings Stone really didn't look great in the first half obviously we know that they did put Jennings in he had a solid Drive uh and he I honestly Stone really didn't wake up until late third quarter and into the fourth and I would say while the games acted very similarly with the two ACC games it felt like SMU was never necessarily better than Nevada um and and at the end of the game they were whereas the the game prior with Georgia Tech like Georgia Tech did feel like they belonged but you knew n didn't belong in this conversation and it was just one man and Brandon Lewis the quarterback that just kept them in it until he couldn't anymore right and he he couldn't complete the passes when he needed to but it was a it was a really good effort by him um ran the ball really well and and threw it decently towards or in the beginning but not in the end uh but I think it was really more of Nevada making crucial mistakes towards the end and I still don't know if SMU necessarily played better obviously they got the results that they needed uh but Stone showed up in the fourth and got the job done I guess yeah watching the game the whole time you kind of just felt like SMU was GNA turn it on at some point and they just never did and a lot of that is due to like you just said the quarterback play um just seemed like every time there was a third down Nev or yeah Nevada was able to um get the first able to keep the ball moving extend drives and yeah SMU just never seemed like they went into that next gear which now makes you wonder do they even have that next gear but hey welcome to the ACC we'll see how it goes because now it's looking like it's not strong as we thought uh I think from the account we had tweeted uh is where we might be talking about the fourth best conference right when we're talking about ACC and Mountain West not necessarily even in the conversation with the big 12 anymore so yeah yeah it's what it looks like after week zero but again we're probably overreacting like we always do in the first week um I'll quickly glance over this Week 0 - Delaware State VS Hawaii game because I guarantee everyone was probably asleep I only uh caught the end on box score because there was nowhere to even watch it um it's Delaware State and Hawaii um I for some reason woke up at 2 amm and just watched the last couple drives on a on box we know why you woke up Dylan don't you worry about that sometimes you have some late games you got to Chase and sometimes you're down bad sometimes you're up good who knows but uh basically I'll just tell you a lot of weather they were basically racing against against a tropical storm and trying to get the game finished so a lot of wind a lot of crazy things going on um just chaos but Hawaii ended up pulling out the end uh Delaware state was pretty much close the whole game they were 40 Point underdogs I think only ended up losing by 21 so interesting game at the very least not too much to take away except for the fact that what 1: AM midnight Hawaii game chasing is back that's always fun we're so bad but all right guys so some cool news had Texas Tech Depth Chart dropped right before we jumped on this call Texas Tech has released their football depth chart um I know all of us kind of quickly looked over it I I'll throw it to you Dallas what are your initial thoughts on the depth chart um yeah you know my eyes immediately went to the offensive line that's been the uh the biggest question marks uh thought it was interesting that uh Sterling Porter kind of cemented himself in that left tack spot um he doesn't have an or next to his name but then on the right side where you know it sounded like Caleb Rogers has been pretty consistently at that Right Guard spot he had an ore next to his name with uh Davon Carter and then also listed on the right tackle spot with Ty Buchanan uh with an or I think Caleb Rogers you know obviously is definitely going to be a starter at one of those two positions it's just uh I guess is Davon Carter the better guard or is uh Ty bu can and the better right tackle so we'll see uh I I liked Carter in the portal uh I kind of want to see him get some get some playing time I think what he he had like 600 plus snaps last year and didn't commit a penalty uh which is music to my ears um but yeah there there's some interesting stuff we saw Micah at the backup y receiver behind Caleb Douglas um curious to how much much playing time they get uh especially early on in the year um I think you know by the time hopefully Micah and Caleb Maybe are splitting duties more um and then I I'll let Troy talk more about the uh tight end position is uh I think he's got some thoughts on that but Mason Tharp tied end one after uh you know going out and getting the top tight end in the portal was really interesting yeah Troy jump in that uh that does stand out a little bit no and we obviously talked about this before but I think with the in actually in the last two podcasts both of y'all touched on the tight end position Dylan I think you said we had three of the top 45 tight ends in the nation from a from a list that you saw and so I think it'll be really interesting um what we can do with that you know I think it opens up the Playbook quite a bit uh and formations um especially with Taj Brooks too right going double tight end or or what that looks like and so it'll be really interesting I think we'll be able to do a variety of things on the offensive side of the ball that we weren't able to do last year uh and each tight end offers a different um I guess trait uh that they bring to the table that will be really cool to see as well uh so I'm super excited for that um you know I think the turnover on the offense uh was a good thing and I think uh that that position obviously Tharp was here last year but I think there'll be a lot of different things we can do there yeah Joey kind of was dropping some hints I think about Tharp I've heard like a few interviews the last few weeks where he's saying like Tharp has had the best off seon he's ever seen just period And so when you got a guy doing something like that it's kind of hard to keep him off the starting role yeah um you know how you go and you compete so if if you show the coaches something and really impress them I mean you you were these jobs but the good thing guys if you don't like having an ore next to your name or you feel like you shouldn't be number two well guess what there's a game in week one against aene Christian and it's time to show what you got in live game play right so we got abene Christian this week Dallas I'll throw it to you as uh I know you got some fun information especially Texas Tech VS ACU around who their quarterback is maybe someone we might recognize yeah yeah I think uh we mentioned this briefly uh a few weeks ago when going over the schedule but old Maverick mcgyver uh is coming back to the 806 for the first time in a few years and uh coached by the uh fighting Keith Pattersons so we'll see uh we'll see how they do last year I looked at some of their stats and they're definitely a run first team um they're going to try to just milk the clock and keep this one relatively close uh and so like Maverick MCG last year only completed 55% of his passes for under 2,000 yards and it wasn't like a tech situation where you go through three quarterbacks have injuries and stuff like that they they just did not throw the ball he didn't have 30 attempts all season so they'll have three or four uh running backs that they cycle in and out um I think it'll be a great test for our defensive line that is uh you know I think got a lot of potential but for the most part unproven um if they can stop the run and uh bottle them up get a lot of three and outs I'll be pretty excited yeah uh that that would definitely be a very big for us right um a team that's going to try to run the ball hopefully uh we can show out and dominate especially because I mean we don't want to overlook him right especially after seeing what we saw in week zero but it's definitely a a much different level of talent so you definitely want your team to uh excel in those areas uh Troy I'll throw it over to you man what are you going to to be keeping a close eye on in this game we still talking relative days to you or oh yeah yeah I think it's h the quarterback play I mean Dallas already touched on that they're gonna run the ball um I was just looking at one of their players last year one receiver that did Stu stick out was 65 bla Taylor we had seven touchdowns and so that'll be interesting um to see how our our players play against him he looks like he's their go-to receiver on that side the ball uh and it'll be a good match up at least obviously they'll probably try to feed him the ball if he's he he's their guy Dallas touchdown that they don't throw many or throw much uh but it looks like he got a bulk of their touches when they do yeah uh to your point it'll be good uh a test to see how either secondary plays how we're able to match up against that Dallas I know you were talking about how ACU is going to run the ball but you also talked about um when we were going over this a lot of teams have run over this ACU team when they played against some FBS opponents good day for Taj Brooks is that what you're seeing yeah I think so and it'll be a good a really good uh early test to kind of get a feel for where this offensive line uh unit is at I think you know just from what we've heard in the scrimmage and stuff that they've been a better pass blocking than run blocking unit so you know A&M they played A&M and un last year uh both of those teams just ran the ball down their throat over and over and over averaging like 50 uh rushes a game so I think this will be a great chance to see a Taj Brooks uh big game even a cam Valdez or a cam dicki uh touchdown or two but um yeah I I think the first game is always uh really interesting to see where your your offensive defensive lines are at uh especially the defensive line because it's just about being physical but uh yeah hoping to dominate up there and uh run it down their throats Troy I know we got the talent Edge over them uh I don't want to ask you who you think's going to win because I think we know that answer but how do you see this game playing out and uh how much do you see Tech winning by gotcha um so I I think Dallas said it perfectly especially with the positions that we need to solve for and that's the offensive line so I think it will definitely be putting those guys to the test early and so hope hopefully we can jump out with Taj and and run the ball and and really solidify what our offensive Line's going to look like uh and so I think that'll you know start it early and often uh and then after that we have so such a new look on offense in general with all the new players uh so curious to see how they're going to mesh um I think I think we could see some some big plays uh we didn't get to see too many electrifying plays last year and so hopefully we'll get a couple of those um I think if week zero taught us anything it's not to take any opponent lightly uh but with that being said I think we'll win 75 to to 17 yeah we're not taking anyone lightly that's a lot what about you Dallas do you see how much do we win by I was going to say this is going to be a lower scoring game just because both teams I think are really going to pound the ball and uh drain some clock um I I'm gonna say uh it's 55 to six for a final score lower scoring we still drop a 50 Burger well okay it's still it's still uh it's still ACU but I I don't think that uh they're going to be able to stop us very much but we're have some longer you know 10 12 Play drives um where we we just Chip Away uh six seven eight yards a carry with Taj uh hopefully we see some more explosive plays because I know that was really lacking that's been lacking the last two years under kitley just with all the injuries we've had at quarterback but uh yeah lower scoring in total but uh Tech still going to get their 50 Burger I I honestly thought you were going to say lower scoring and then just say like 75 to7 and just lower their total all right guys do the total listed yet it's got to still be in the I haven't looked yet I looked um the only game that I was looking or when I looked at the bigger games they had totals listed but the tech one wasn't listed yet yeah usually when you play FCS opponent it doesn't come out too closer to the game but all right guys um thank you guys for watching today great week zero you did oh me you did yeah oh 100 to zero um I think that I I I do think that we will put up 56 to 14 let's go Burgers all around burgers for the Boys burgers for the boys but no sorry my phone was at 3% guys so I was like all right I just got to get to the end of this all right fair enough but um no thank you guys for watching uh week zero is definitely fun but
