Governor Josh Shapiro's administration announced $75 million will be given to school districts across the state to help finance environmental repairs. School districts in our area will get a sizable slice of that cash to help get rid of lead and to deal with other issues. News watch sixteen's Joe Coha joins us live to break it all down. Joe Governor Shapiro made the announcement this morning at the Antietam school district in Berks County last year, catastrophic flooding caused significant damage to buildings in the district near Redding, but the funding announced in Berks County won't just stay there. Governor Josh Shapiro announced 100 and nine Pennsylvania school districts will receive a combined $75 million in grant funding for projects targeting lead mold asbestos and other environmental hazards. Whether environmental damage is caused by a catastrophic event, we know or just simply the passage of time, we know that there are far too many schools across Pennsylvania who are in dire need of expensive repairs and infrastructure improvements. 21 school districts, charter schools and CT CS located in nine counties in our area will receive about $6 million in funding of those local districts. The Lake Lehman school district is getting nearly $1 million for environmental repairs. As is the Scranton school district, Pine Grove, Sealings Grove and Mount Pocono are all getting more than a half a million dollars districts had until the beginning of July to apply for funds to cover costs associated with abating environmental hazards in schools eligible school districts can't use program money for recurring upkeep like cleaning or minor fixes. Our students should be able to drink from the water fountains, clean water that isn't going to make them sick. They should be able to breathe clean air free of mold and asbestos and they should be in classrooms that are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Our kids deserve to learn in world class facilities that are safe and healthy. We reached out to several school districts in our area slated to receive state grant funding. For instance, the Mount Poco, the Pocono Mountain School district says it will use the money to help finance repairs to the clear run intermediate schools crumbling brick facade for a full list of all the districts in our area that will receive funds for environmental work.
