here's Chris Carlin it is a cool evening in central New Jersey on the banks of the old raran season number 155 of ruter football is set to get underway this evening as the Scarlet Knights of 2024 host a Howard University bison from the FCS good evening everybody Chris Carlin alongside former Scarlet Knight quarterback and NFL quarterback Mike teal and ruter Hall of Famer Eric l Grant Anthony fusil down on the field we'll hear from him in just a little bit as we get ready to open the 2024 season and it has been one that has been anticipated for sure especially off of the end of last year with Rutter's win in the Pinstripe Bowl over Miami the needle is pointing North and everybody is feeling good about where this program is Eric and this is exactly where the program wanted to get to kosana has a lot of senior leadership on this team on the offense and defensive side and it's all about that culture building for four years now he's been instilling that culture in these guys they've been building up their bodies getting ready for a season like this and obviously everyone looks at the schedule you say you know what have a chance Mike I'm not going to compare the two but there was a lot of anticipation going into 2005 and 2006 and Coach this week talked about avoiding the poison don't drink the poison we've heard that from Nick Sabin a lot and now we hear it from coach shano so take me inside the locker room with the mentality there when you know you have a chance to do something pretty special yeah I think even more so nowadays with social media everywhere the kids go they get blasted whether it's on X whether it's on Instagram they see Kirk hstry talking about Ruckers football they see the Big 10 preseason rankings so on and so forth so keeping it within the walls of the program keeping it within the locker room and making sure that more so now than ever they chop every single day uh I think it goes back to though 16 guys since coach xano first got back here on the roster 32 players in the program for the last three years a lot of good leadership on the team this year we heard from K manangi who of course led the Big 10 in rushing a season ago with 1,200 62 yards asked him this week what has you excited and he said we're getting the band back together everybody's here everybody's stayed and and for the most part this is a very similar team to a year ago with one notable exception at quarterback aan cak menis a transfer from Minnesota where he was recruited by Rutter's offensive coordinator Kirk shiraka we will get a chance to see him under Center Gavin whimit was just a little bit short in the quarterback battle back in the spring coach let him know right away gave him an opportunity to make his mind up and Gavin decided to return home to the University of Kentucky meanwhile we had a chance to catch up with the coach this week and I asked him what he has seen from his team through training camp well I've seen a lot you know we've had a couple bumps and bruises they've worked incredibly hard they've also worked smart so I'm really excited about tonight I'm really excited about the opportunity we have to go and play a game we've been we've been hitting each other for a long time this summer this seemed like a Long Camp I don't know if it was any longer but boy it seem long but it uh it's one that I think that we got better in every area and we needed to but now now they count so here we go as you're getting to know your team how quickly do you get a sense of the traits that you're looking for well I think I got a these first couple games you're going to find out you know we have some young guys playing tonight that we didn't originally think we're going to play but because of injury they're they're going so um right we're going to find out a lot we're going to find out a lot about how we handle pressure of game day we're going to find out about what what exactly it is that we need to be able to get better at do we have to CH you know move some guys positions we we're going to find out a lot in in these first two games and then we got to make adjustments fans who are getting into know a calak Manis a little bit give them a scouting report and what makes him such a good fit for your program well he's he's number one a great leader great person a very accurate passer he he computes the information he distributes the ball where he needs to go and accurately so I'm excited to see him play tonight I'm sure he's a little bit antsy you know uh no matter if you played or not it's a new place for him and but he'll settle down after that first snap and and I'm excited to see him play defensively what do you expect the identity of the group to be well we're going to have some young guys like coach haris simc and his staff have done a great job preparing them we're going to have to help them through it it's not going to be smooth this team is really good offensively they're well coached they have a great scheme and they have some really good athletes so not exactly the one daa opponent you'd want to schedule but that you play what you what you got and we got to go out there and stop him we know what what the job is we got to go tackle well that's always a challenge in the first game finally is this the most exciting moment of the year for a head coach you love the process but now you're here yeah I mean look I do love the process but game day is what I live for right those those game days are the best and uh we're finally on it so let's go get it well let's get to it the keys to the game Manis in his career over a couple of years at the University of Minnesota 17 starts 23 career games completion percentage of 53% 2784 yards 17 touchdowns 13 interceptions but you watch him through camp and the one thing that certainly jumps out is his accuracy so Mike um while those numbers from the last couple of years may not indicate you will normally want to get that number over 60 what are you looking for here from aan tonight in his first start with ruter I think for Athan is is just play the game Let The Game come to you don't force anything you did a great job in the spring winning the quarterback battle it's been your team since training camp you're a captain of this team go out and let the game come come to you and make the plays when they're there we'd like to see him press the ball down the field a little bit but take the completions underneath and make sure the offense is staying on the field and the one that jumps out some new weapons Dair Miller transfer from Monmouth an FCS All-American last year led the FCS in receiving yards with 1,93 and catches with 906 100 yard games he's a dynamic player wanted to see if it could translate to the big league so to speak and he gets that chance here and we'll also see guys like Chris Long return and some familiar names along the lines of Christian Dremel and Kenny Fletcher who made the trans uh transition before the bowl game from defensive line to tight end well he has developed very well at the position and he will start there for ruter tonight Eric let's go to the defensive side the heartbreaking news was losing muhamad teray for the year a guy that has really been an outstanding player for the Scarlet Knights moved to the Mike linebacker spot uh last season Eric defensively what are you expecting from this team that took major steps last year yeah it's definitely a tough loss when you lose Mohamad ter it's hard to replace a guy like that but this team especially coming out of jump coacho had just mentioned it in the interview is tackling early in the season you got to be able to fine tune in on your tackling by playing another opponent and also making sure that you're not missing too many tackles and and having everyone swarm into their defense but the one thing I really want to see out of this defense is causing Havoc Havoc what I mean by getting pressure on the quarterback getting those tackles for losses getting those pass breakups it's not always with the interception or fumble recovery cuz that will come as you cause the Havoc just make the offense uncomfortable every chance you get and they had the senior leadership on this defense to do it and then finally on special teams we saw last year in the bowl game what ruter does they block kicks 71 block kicks under Greg shano including 41 punts eight over the last two years what are we looking for on special teams Eric ah well you definitely want to see more of that you know that they're coming at one point of the game they're going to have that pump block or that field goal block coming for you and that's what the scar Knight specialized on and also you got to play the field position game and make team Drive the entire field when you're on defense and try to get those short Fields when you're on offense and ruter has a new pter and Jacob Anderson a freshman from East Melbourne Australia and by way of pro kick Australia and Adam corack recommendation and hard to believe that you could go wrong with that as the future Ruckers Hall of Famer continues to play up in Canada we'll get to today's coin toss in just side the traditional look to start the season here in 2024 Howard has yet to come out of the tunnel as they now start to emerge and the Bison will come out as they uh captains get set to meet at Midfield and it does include Muhammad ter who is out there wearing his jersey towards ACL and unfortunately will miss the season for Ruckers but nonetheless Scarlet Knight defense looking to do some special things this year and that Ruckers offense with some real veteran leadership especially up front because you see a lot of guys who have been here galinski in the middle wena asamoa and Brian felter the guards hen Pierce Tyler needam the tackles you've got TSH white who's played a lot of football as has Reggie Sutton back for his seventh year an incredible story of a devastating knee injury a few years back came back last year and nobody knew if he would even be able to play football again there was a time when they didn't know if he'd be able to walk again that's how bad the injury got and what happened he ends up starting the last seven games last season for ruter at right tackle and they also have a transfer in from Ohio University named shedric rhods junr from MCD Georgia and he's a guy that adds a lot of depth there as well so ruers has plenty of depth up front Howard has won the toss they have elected to defer until the second half so ruers will get the football first we have a big 10 officiating crew led by David Seagle howed in their visiting white jerseys with navy blue numbers silver pants and silver helmets with the logo on the side on each side for the Bison getting ready for the start of Labor Day weekend can't think of a better way to get going it's in a lot of ways it's been a long what seven and a half eight months and in a lot of ways it's been a very short eight nine months to get ready for this season but man it's exciting to get going again for a team that has a lot of expectations this year absolutely when you come out that Tuttle For the First Time of the Season it's just that little extra juice that that's so every game before every game you get those butterflies but the first after you work your butt off all offseason
