The Deliverance Netflix Movie Review

from director Lee Daniels who did movies like Precious and the butler he has a new horror movie on Netflix can it deliver the scares what's up Netflix fans brand new movie on the platform let's discuss the [Music] Deliverance remember before we get started whatever it says to you do not listen to it so in a case widely covered at the time a woman and her three children are experiencing strange incidents in their Indiana home that grew progressively worse the children were levitating becoming violent so on and so forth so uh what starts out as a handful of simple is problems that some people are looking at and saying okay what's going on within the confines of that household is it something more than that or is it what we perceive it to be but it turns out as this movie progresses that something's up something's going on there's a force a demon something is freaking us out here now this film tries to do a lot it is a a scary movie a horror movie but there are themes that we're working with specifically in the first two acts of the movie that I found to be way more compelling than the horror parts that really takes up most of the third act and that's what I I want to focus on CU that's what impacted me the most Andre day gives an awesome performance here now some of the material that she's given it's not great some of the dialogue between characters it's not awesome and I had questions uh at the end of the movie when things wrapped up I'm like okay so what what was it now what's going on you what you also have Glenn Close who plays the grandma once again hillbilly elogy all over again not really H this is a better version of I mean very different character but of what she was trying to do in that movie in terms of her performance this is a better version of that she really tackles her character in a way that some could perceive as funny some of her dialogue here is hilarious admittedly the writing wasn't the best but the way she owns it and attacks it and the Mystery surrounding her character because you know she's found Redemption but can it make up for the things that she did in her past that day's character uh mentions and starts mentioning as the movie progresses and that gives you an idea as to why Andre day's character in this film maybe isn't the best mom because she's consistently doing things in this movie I'm like that's not going to help the kids I mean you have all this crazy stuff happening in the background but she's not the best person in the world now there is a reason for that and we get hinted at a couple of times through the movie but I felt like those were the opportunities that this film missed when we hit on those ideas that are far more interesting than the horror aspect of this film because the way the horror is handled in this movie it just feels like it's a firsttime horror director and not necessarily in a good way I know Lee Daniels can do it the ideas that we are explor Bing with this black mother and her children and the themes that come from that because what they're going through is bad and other people see that it's bad and so they start to blame the mother and the conditions may not be the best she's lying to authorities when they ask her when's the last time she drank and so she's not doing the things that are going to help the situation but there's this underlying horrific element that's actually happening and she can't convince anybody that it's happening and thus no one wants to believe believe her because you it's the boy who cried wolf if you're going to keep lying to us when are we going to believe you if something's actually going down and in this movie something is actually going down because we get a couple of Exorcist exorcism type of scenes where I'm like all right that's that's freaky little overly CGI doesn't look the best when they lean heavily on the CGI elements and the characters contorting and levitating and Spider-Man crawling up against the wall it doesn't look good admittedly so that kind of takes you out of the experience but the more fascinating aspect of this movie is her trying to convince people that that's happening now looking into the true story there is a theory that none of this was actually going down yet that idea is not explored in the movie I think it's hit on once right but if they would have made this more so okay are we seeing things from her perspective that aren't actually factual or is is this what we are seeing if they would have explored that more this would have become an unconventional horror movie and it already kind of is in the first half because of the themes that we're dealing with this mother and her children this grandmother and her daughter and all of these you know relationships and dynamics that are important because it's it's interesting to peek into and Lee Daniels does a great job with that he knows how to write emotional dialogue tragic dialogue dialogue that you know many people can see themselves in that situation with yet when it becomes a horror movie when it turns into a scary story it falls apart it becomes ridiculous it becomes cheesy it becomes something I've seen a thousand times and there was an exorcist movie that came out earlier this year I believe that tried to tackle something similar I think this does a better job than that the idea that this could have been is it or isn't it actually happening that's far more interesting than cliche series of jump scares and demonic sounds and uh yada yada in the third act that just again unraveled it's entertaining it's ridiculous so you could see it as fun so this isn't yeah it's a bad film but it isn't a bad like oh I'm just so bored while I'm watching no it gets fun in the third act admittedly but I was just rolling my eyes at the decisions like H you're going to go for that and and then when it turned turns into that type of movie it just doesn't look very good it looks cheap and like a horror film that belongs on Netflix and that's not really what Lee Daniels is normally doing and so I was a little I was shaking my head at the end of the day because you took an interesting concept and you just kind of turned it generic and so weak dialogue strange decision-making by the characters hard to root for some of the people that were supposed to root for but you are rooting for the kids and I think the performances from the kids they they do what they need to do not the best I've ever seen they're fine uh but you are rooting for them to get into a better situation by the end because these poor kids man they go through so much in this movie I mean yeah you've got demons crawling in and out of you but then you've got your siblings who have to watch that and your siblings who have to suffer through getting strangled in a bathtub and so yeah lots of things going down with this family it's a crazy horror movie but I do feel as if they could have handled it better or just made more interesting decisions to make it more intriguing because the themes are intriguing the horror not so much before I give you my score what' you think about the Deliverance let me know your thoughts down below what's the best horror movie of the year while the Deliverance tackle some important and interesting themes in the beginning the plot slowly unravels and becomes a generic and poorly handled horror movie by the end the performances are solid but there are more than a few missed opportunities along the way and that is I just think the ultimate thing to think about what could they have done better to make this a better horror movie because that's what it is at its core all right thanks for watching I'll see you at some point today or tomorrow who knows
