sophomore and I was a pup and then he never lost again right I I will tell you did you ever beat him no no but but honestly with that guy weird strong oh he's he's the weirdest strongest I I grabbed his smelliest dude I've ever met I came out I kind of you know locked up with him he just like clamped down on me I'm like geez I I felt like I was some type of potato pipe and he was moving me and I was like yeah it didn't go well but that that was it what's the guy's name Tracy b where is he he's I know he's somewhere where he's probably still stinky oh I'm sure he didn't shower well Co hey I'm and he he he really suits their system you know so he he knows the system they like him and um yeah good for good for him that's awesome all right so um let's let's talk a little bit about Isaac Wilson what did you see out of him last night coach you feel you feel good about his future I feel good about his future he made some some bad decisions he's he look like a freshman out there at times yeah but the thing is he got a ton of reps and I thought I thought he got better as he as it went and I and and the kid is a real competitor he's got a live arm and I think that that he'll learn a lot from that film and the guy he's a real filmoholic guy a white room guy you know so so and he's got a really strong arm so I think he'll he'll learn a lot from from from this from this particular game that family is a filmaholics guys are both intelligent Zach and Isaac both very intelligent football players um and and there is a difference because there's guys that are great athletes and they're just not really smart you know so the mistakes that that that Isaac made last night I think are were freshman mistakes that you almost it's almost baked in you you anticipate that some of this stuff is going to happen as you mentioned I think right at the top of the show you have to get an adjustment to the speed of the game you know even though the opponent's suu and and so it's it's a level down it's still these are still College athlet still College athletes I I tell you from in high school and this is I can say this about McKay hillstead as well when when McKay was coming out of Skyridge and he was going to go to boisey State and then ends up in Utah State I always my biggest concern for quarterbacks specifically that scramble that run and and that's a part of their game which it is for McKay you always wonder it's like yeah but you can't run like that at the next level you just can't because the guys that are chasing you are that are are way faster than than anybody you've faced in high school unless you've gone against some some of the you know the better you know like a taili Akana which which you know he you know did um in practice at least but there's going to be that learning curve that adjustment and then you recognize and smart quarterbacks will recognizes okay okay I can't do that and so now the the the plays that when they broke down I thought I could run I'm going to keep my eyes downfield more so and I'm going to make sure that I I I I got options and that'll happen and that will happen for Isaac Wilson I have I have no doubt that that kid will will be able to look at the film from last night and say okay I I know what I and and you I mean how many games of his did you call probably what seven eight of them at least yeah over the years yeah so and you know every all all the reports and listen listen to Mike the dad you know he'll tell you that that Isa Isaac is was the best of the bunch right so um I think he's going to be brilliant yeah I I think he's going to be a he'll be just fine um coach I'm curious from your point of view are there mistakes that young quarterbacks would make that you would say no that's an indicator he's a he going to be a a bust or mistakes that they would make that you're like n that happens I'm glad it happened and this is how we fix it yeah well you so some guys you know have it and some some don't you know and you know like with uh I remember when Alex Smith was a freshman and then we were we had a bad stretch in there and and we we didn't have a great tail back and so we need to rely on the quarterback to win games and then we had a byee and and uh it was between Brett Elliott and and Alex and in that week you know when you when you took a look at everything actually Alex had a better week than than Brett did and so kind of in the staff we said well we think Alex is the guy but Brett's been here you know and paid his dues we need to give Brett the first shot at it to see what see how he'll react to it and with the idea we were going to play Alex some so we go down to San Diego State and so Brett Brett's getting the majority of the Reps we're not playing that well we put Alex in the game and he's a disaster so we don't you know we're using up his eligibility and with the idea that we're going to probably try to split the Reps but then we know that if we don't do well in the next five games we're going to get fired anyway so so uh wow so then we we make a decision after that game that you know we're going to stay with with Brett and give him give him the ring and then we won I think four of the last games and and we got fired anyway but but uh but actually you could see that Alex was going to be a great player you know and people forget Brett Elliott started the next year too and got hurt against Texas A&M Alex Smith was not your week one starter that next year no I didn't know that yeah but yeah and then Brett went went back up to Washington played up there and broke all Rec up there but uh great great career so they were both having both of those guys on our roster at that time were were you know they're two really good quarterbacks but you know you you uh there are no guarantees what going to happen but you could you could see that Alex was going to be special just when he get you know the opportunity when you are M you know and colani is trying to make his decision a quarterback I mean how stressful are those decisions as a coach I just can't that's the most important position out on the field and you need to get it right and you're talking about you know we're trying to stay employed as a coaching staff colani is trying to do the same thing right now yeah Kanani's under the situation where he has to win his pressure got hor so so yeah so so they're sitting there and they're probably having that same discussion every day between rodrik and and the offensive you know offensive coaches who do you like who don't you like who's the best leader who's who gives us the best chance to win uh and trying to take the all the equations out of it and U and whatever they promised the kid from Baylor when he came here you know every so so they're trying to figure out okay if we start wrestl right the kid from RCC and then the other kid doesn't play what's what does he go in the tank I don't know the kid so yet you know you don't know the personalities of everybody so what you hope is that whomever they decide is going to be the starter that this kid is productive right from day one I would go back just real quickly back to Isaac's situation Isaac is in a great situation because he doesn't have the pressure he doesn't have to be the starter yeah right he he gets he gets to sit behind one of the great quarterbacks that Utah's had and and learn comes in when the pressure is off when the pressure is off um and and and I love that you know you put them in let them make some some mistakes to keep them in there and and give him the opportunities but really that that's not his role his role is not to be a starter right now his role is to continue to develop and he gets a chance to do that behind a guy who is is you know fantastic and being a CH getting a chance to to watch and communicate uh and with with Cam and and figure out you know how you do this and you kind of wish Zach would have had the same opportunity in the NFL you know yeah you and you thought that that was going to happen yeah you know and then all of a sudden and that last year you thought it was going to happen last year and then then the ke's injury and now you're forced into another situation where there it's a no win yeah I so I just take my own experience and use it as a bit of an example the first game I remember after my red shirt year the first game that I got action in was against the Washington Huskies it was at level Edward Stadium it was the perfect day game it was 65,000 fans jam-packed and I remember taking that first step on to the field cuz you sit there for an entire year and you're looking at that same striped Sidelines and being told to get back and then you take this weird step onto the field and you're like I'm here this is this is my playing world and you start running out there and the nerves Bubble Up and and it's a simple defensive call of hey it's you know whatever the defense is called and you know what your assignment is but your brain is all over the place I take that in times it by 10 for a quarterback that steps out on that field a night game even though it was Southern pressure was off the the fan base was crazy you know that place is wild they're excited to see the kid he feels it he knows his brother who's an NFL quarterback sitting up there watching you saw the Dad's reaction on that first pick you know the the camera goes right to him he drops his head we all know Big Mike and Big Mike is dropping his head and you could see Zach saying to his dad like man that's a quick Cross then the heat there's no way he should have thrown that you know Dad's thinking geez I can't believe he just threw that all the pressures that Isaac felt and all those emotions that he went through it's it's a it's an adrenaline dump yeah and it all falls off your shoulders people don't get quite the pressures and the emotion that comes with all of this and so I totally look at his performance last night I'm like it's acceptable to me totally acceptable even that interception down in the red zone that was at a mindbending throw he comes into that the meetings to today mhm and I sit down with him like you know that that's not okay yeah yeah I know that that's not okay don't don't do that again okay I won't so the question is that that they had this morning probably before they watched the film with their players okay is this is this kid good enough to be our number two I mean that's that's the first first question that they had today okay when when the coaches were meeting privately the coaches were meeting privately so so so um and and Andy's really good at making a decision you know in other words okay this is the guy we're going to go with number two okay and and so uh that's first thing they you know they they probably talked about they took a look at the film took a look at his mechanics took a look at you know everything that he was doing and say is is this guy can this guy WI a win a games fors at as the number two guy because you got to make sure that that your number two guy is is ready to play it's just like BYU has a name situation but who is their number one who is their number two and can both of those guys win games for them I think for Utah because you mentioned this right that we don't know what their running back room is really going to look like I still think that Mitchell will will separate himself at some point um but your your pass game is going to be that much more important more important than maybe it typically is in the lwig offense and so is Isaac Wilson is he ready because there there probably will be a a time during the season where he'll be called on to come in and finish a game you know he will right so that's just the odds are that that's the way college football football is anyway Scotty brought that up what was it yesterday where you said cam had not finished the season yeah there's not been a season the cam has finished well he he he he takes you know he'll keep the ball on his own read he'll do things you know he'll try to escape and he he's going to take some hits he took him last night and Kyle wasn't happy about it yeah so but because of who he is you're not going to he's not going to escape taking taking hits because just he's a he's an instinctive player and he does what his instinct tells him to do just based off that performance last night and I know that there were some mistakes he had that air ball on I think it was the second or third down that just sailed on him and you know he he took a sack took a pretty hard hit and had an early pick and even with those things considered I saw things that I really really liked and Frank doce your guy brought up a really good point yesterday he said Brandon Rose couldn't even beat out Bryson Barnes yeah so right so what are we talking about what what are the options well the option is Sam hu the transfer that's come in well how long can you have Sam he's not the future the future is Isaac Wilson so as long as you can keep that kid getting reps keep him learning the game he is your future and you go with him as the number two I I I like where you're going with this because you know with the Trans report and everything it's so many oneand done guys coming in or two years is well they've got left of their eligibility or they play a year then they transfer out like how great would it be to have a kid come in as a freshman get a a little bit of time underneath cam rising and then have three years to be the man amazing yeah so here's here's the interesting that would be amazing right for Utah yeah incredible so I watched Colorado game last night right and they had 51 new players okay uh can you imagine yeah hey that's like so okay I don't like some of these guys I had last year so we're going to bring in we're going to go to the portal we get another 51 guys you know so they got 51 new players okay the quarterback is good I mean his his kid yeah is is a player he the hunter kid is good yeah and the hunter kid is good I mean their skill guys are really good they're offensive line defensive line dog dog crap you know thanks for not saying it yeah well I didn't I know because Lloyd would cut it off anyway not good and they're just running all over the place right and and and North Dakota state is very disciplined a downhill team good combinations very smart in their approach the football you know they just got outskilled and they still had a chance to win it at the end but but some of these skill guys from Colorado are ridiculously good Jimmy horn yeah including the quarterback but offensive line defensive line are are in the are garbage at this point but um so they've got you know and then if the quarterback ever got hurt they'd really oh they' be in a lot of trouble oh they'd be but that but that kid he made he was so much fun to watch 445 yards passing offense last night and he got some receivers they got there are so many ifs on that deal oh I mean so politically I'm kind of involved a little bit because I know the the people involved in it so are you going to allow me to talk no no away we're not listening but the the new athletic director at at Utah State uh has been trying to I think from the very beginning she didn't want Jerry bovy to be the system ad okay and so she didn't really she didn't really like him but bie is the guy who raised all the money up there okay then the lady who's the at charge that was at Weber that was in charge of the prop for the women Amy Crosby Amy Crosby okay and so what you and then you have the head coach you who you know so there were the so I I don't now you don't have to say anything I'll just say I'm calling the game tomorrow too I'm gonna stay out of this okay you look because you know they can't fire me because I don't work there but but so I think the head coach bie the girl I think they they all lawyered up okay so everything so something's got to give it's either going to be the athletic director and the president or it's going to be bie the girl and Coach so the coach I think his his uh was about a 60 page rebuttal yeah you know and so they're all lawyered up and U it'll be interesting to see and then the unfortunate incident with the player that died jumping off a cliff over there first of all the kid didn't know how to swim second of all he was harassed into the jumping off the cliff you know so and and then you know that that is just you know I mean kids on the kid came as a transfer you know doesn't know how to swim jumps off of one of those deals where you go down probably hits a rock or something and never submerged again I mean this has all happened in a matter of weeks I can't even think yeah of of how devastating how ter how terrible that's got to be in a locker room people got to understand that locker room is a family what I mean mean I'm just I mean if I'm a player and I'm sitting there and I'm watch this kid doesn't submerge you know I'm thinking holy Christ I'll never I would You' never forget it yeah I mean because it's traumatic traumatic and everything that's happened up there has been traumatic you know just the that with with you know when Bobby went up there he went up there with the idea that that he was going to be the ad of vinc that was the whole bargaining Point okay uh Amy went up there with the idea she was going to have a certain responsibility then they hired a new ad from from Michigan and she has her own you know she wants her own people she wants to do her own thing you know and I understand all that so there and then whatever Blake did to to make the ad mad I don't think the ad and Blake had a good relationship okay and I think that she was in the background was trying to get rid of him anyway so so it becomes a pile of you know what and um and then you take a 33-year-old and say you need to lead this team yeah and uh you know and and I have nothing but respect for Nate drying I love him he's a really good coach and I think he be a excellent head coach uh but that's a tough situation coach if we get thrown into oh I'm telling you it it's it's like okay and I think they actually have a pretty good team up there oh I think they they have the best team talent-wise they've had in a long long time even better than the one that won a conference title a few years ago so I so I think their their the ability of their team I think is good yeah coach how much do will it help Nate drling he was just on with us on Tuesday and we asked him about Troy moral is that right Scotty Troy moral and then there was another coach that he brought with him but these are these are coaches that coached long periods of time these are mentors of his the other coach coached him and he'd worked with him right does that will that help these guys that have been head coaches that are older that had stepped away from the game but are coming back to it well sometimes you know guys who have been head coaches they don't always make a a great assistant coaches because you know I've been in charge and all of a sudden I'm I'm this responsible for this but then there as a head coach they're thinking why is he doing that he shouldn't be doing that he should be doing this you know so you get a you get a different so what as an assistant coach you have to be a good soldier you know that's your job be a to support the head coach and be a good soldier and not all of a sudden come in and and yeah you're doing this wrong do this or do this you know uh you don't need a lot of people second guessing you you need and that's the one thing that Kyle has everybody is on the same page the assistant coaches know their their responsibilities the academic people know their responsibilities and they all have one thing they're all loyal to the University of Utah now I think Kanani has that to a certain extent particularly with some of the guys that he's brought in you know that because they're colani sataki guys so they're loyal to him which means that you know if there's a lot of garbage they're going to be there to pick up the you know pick up the garbage they're not going to throw more garbage on him because if you have a a disloyal assistant that has his own his own uh agenda agenda yeah yeah yeah well then can you sniff those out as a coach do you know yeah you you you you get a feel for it you know and you get a feel for the people you can trust and the people you can't trust and then eventually and that guy gets fired at the at the water fountain Yeah well yeah hey by the way you're out well that one line coach the one line coach at kle had he fired him at the water yeah he said hey don't come back tomorrow yeah what what do you mean don't come back tomorrow yeah you're done there was an OC he had to have that conversation with too yeah all right right hands and Scotty we're going to wrap this thing up next well we got a we
