Trending searches: when does the presidential debate start
reaction this morning to the first ever face-to-face meeting between vice president kamla Harris and former president Donald Trump saw them debating over everything from Reproductive Rights to Foreign Wars but in one bizarre moment an unfounded internet rumor about immigration crept in they're eating the dogs the people that came in they're eating the cats they're eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there so joining us this morning from Philadelphia with his sites is AIC Camp CTV News political analysts and author good morning and welcome back good morning it's good to be with you it you know I think everybody had the same reaction when they heard that was like pardon me we should point out too that the the moderators said they spoke to the city controller the city controller says this is not true this hasn't happened yet the response from Mr Trump was that while people on the street are saying it is and then they moved on to other issues uh this was Eric the last remaining schedule debate between these two candidates so the first and the last potentially what were the moments that landed and that will last as we continue this campaign well clearly that comment about eating pets and I can tell you in the spin room there were hundreds of members of the press that were in there and the entire room just uh started laughing uncontrollably When Donald Trump said that and there were many people in the room who also beli that it was at that moment that he certainly lost the debate this was a debate that had so much on the line so consequential particularly for kamla Harris and clearly given how Raaz or thin the margins are right now in this debate I think what we saw last night was KLA Harris was very strategic in getting under Donald Trump's skin she did that when she went after him on crowd sizes and it was surprising that he actually took the bait and I think it was there where he became unhinged and she clearly neutralized him at that point which allowed her to actually become far more comfortable and being able to not only talk about her narrative which she really needed to do but also share with the American people more about her vision and her plans for the country if she becomes president you know we were watching that debate and it you know Donald Trump has has famously said that he doesn't necessarily like to prepare for these debates that he likes to go in on Instinct KLA Harris has been very public about how much preparation she did and I think it I think it showed up part of this C strategy of her campaign was to throw these types of comments at to see if she was rattled or if she'd take the bait you know Donald Trump needed to look presidential get his policies across did either of them accomplish what they needed to do last night kamla Harris yes kamla Harris went into this debate with so many questions uh and clearly when she walked in the room it was very clear what the intention was when she walked over to Donald Trump and actually shook his hand uh you knew right there that this was a strategy that was being deployed in addition to that that KLA Harris needed to not only look presidential but she needed to come off as being able to withstand the scrutiny from the moderators but also the insults and the attacks that would come from Donald Trump and I think she did that very well and also just optically we know that Donald Trump literally stands more than a foot taller than KLA Harris and so it was interesting going into the debate to see how they would look on the split screen but clearly last night they looked like equals and again I just think it was an overwhelmingly great night for KLA Harris and just to give you an indication of how true that is we got a huge huge surprise in the spin room last night because Donald Trump made his way in there and about that Eric yeah politics 101 is when a candidate actually goes into into the spin room themselves you know that they actually lost and so Donald Trump came into the spin room he answered questions and it was very strange because just like the comment about the dog eating Donald Trump kept spewing these these polls that were taken during the debate that showed that he overwhelmingly won the debate and so it let you know that this was someone who was very desperate to actually try to change the narrative coming out of a debate that was so consequential in fact I think it was so bad last night could actually be titled Donald Trump's Biden moment oo um you know what was really important for both of them and you cited this already they both walked into this debate and the polls are really really close but where they need to win is undecided voters uh does this move the needle at all for either of these candidates have they won anybody over with this debate or do we need to see more you know that's a really really great observation because you're so right this this election is going to come down to a handful of people in a handful of states and so last night both of these candidates needed to speak to those individuals most importantly the people who are right here in this state where I am right now Pennsylvania Pennsylvania is the prize in this election whoever wins Pennsylvania will undoubtedly win this election and so clearly they needed to speak to not only the aspirations but also the fears of the American people around issues like the economy and of course Reproductive Rights immigration and I think what we saw last night was a candidate KLA Harris who was able to do that but she was able to do that because with precision and with skill she was able to completely disarm Donald Trump which allowed her to be able to do that and I think Donald Trump just simply lost it uh when she went after him on the issue of crowds and also calling him a loser by saying he lost the 2020 election I think it was pretty much over for Donald Trump at that point a lot of discussion around the format of this debate and I will have to say Eric Wat watching last night and I did watch all the way till the end I would say this is the first time I feel like in a few election campaigns in the United States that I actually got to hear both candidates and heard answers to issues and I I think it was fairly clean in comparison to other debates that we've seen in the US so far what do you think I think you're right and I think one of the reasons for that is because I think the two moderators for the debate did an exceptional job uh they did fact check Donald Trump but they didn't spend all of their time factchecking him they actually picked their spots so for example on the When Donald Trump made the comment about the dogs and the cats they fact check that they fact checked Donald Trump saying that people were getting abortions at seven eight nine months or after birth which to be clear if you're you're not getting an abortion after birth that's actually just murder and so they fact checked that as well but they also I think were very Stern with comma Harris as well go um uh questioning her about her issue her change positions particularly on fracking and other issues and so I think what you saw last night were two moderators who were deeply engaged and not only shaping uh the the tone and the tenor of the of the debate but also making sure that they kept both of the candidates with within the bounds CC news political analyst Eric ham great to have the discussion with you this morning appreciate it thank you thank you hey thanks for watching
