UTSA QB Owen McCown Postgame Interview 28-16 Win over Kennesaw State 8.31.24

Owen what was the uh mood in the locker room after this game today yeah um I think overall we got the win and that's that's most important but um obviously that second half was not where we wanted it to be so that's um we know we're better than that and and we'll fix it so um but just overall we're satisfied we got the win how would you grade your uh start today uh pretty good I think I think um offensively you know in the first half I think coach Burke and and the rest of the guys around me did a really good job and we got to execute the offense really well obviously put a lot of points up in that first half and that second half um there were some bumps on the road so we we'll get back and look at that um but overall we got the win Owen did you feel any nerves or Jitters coming in today what was your mindset like a at this game no not at all not with the the group around us and the coaching staff that prepares us so um no not at all how important was it for you to get out to a hot start the way you did with those three touchdown drives right away early in the game yeah I think that's something we talked about starting out fast set the tone of the game and like I said coach Burke um had some really good plays dialed up and um my job is just get to The Playmakers and and that's what I tried to do and they they were awesome was there anything you can point to that the offense kind of slowed down a little bit from there and through the second half what sort of changed for you guys yeah I think um some some self uh inflicted wounds obviously um starting with the penalties just holding penalties um can't have those they'll just kill drives and then some of the sacks um we'll have to get back and look at whether that was whether that was me um getting the ball out of my hands or just protection wise where where we can fix that and and be better next time you guys talked through fall Camp about the importance of starting out strong this year and having a better non-conference season than we've seen here in years past how did you feel like that effort was reflected in the performance we saw today good I think like you said those first three drives we executed really well um and I think you know we obviously we had some dmps on the road in the second half but overall we got the win and that's part of starting fast so it's a team game defense play a heck of a game um so just like I said we're glad we got the win ow when you watch the film today what do you think you're going to see um I think you know like like probably all saw the first half was really well we executed really well um the second half was just self-inflicted wounds whether that was penalties um sacks just just not executing the way um to up to our standards so I think just just little things like that that will fix what what was Kenesaw doing to kind of shut down the run it seemed like were they stack in the box or what what happened there yeah just different stunts up front um you know they they got a good defense they they executed and adjusted really well in the second half so um we have to look to to you know how we can counter that better um but like I said they have a good defense so what did you think about the uh crowd today oh it was awesome very electric there's there's nothing better than playing in front of the Al and then just some thoughts on next week that's obviously a rivalry game around here yeah so I think you know first of all we got to look where we went wrong here and how to clean that up and then like you said you know obviously Texas State's a really good team so we'll just um figure out how how we can attack those guys and um yeah it should be a fun one oh and you seem to look to Deon mchan a lot today I know you guys go back quite a bit how important was that connection today or what led you guys to to link up so often yeah I think that starts a play call and and Co coach Burke knows what kind of player Deon is and how Dynamic he is and my job is to to get him the ball so um it was a it was a great job by coach bur diing up those plays and and and yeah he's great player when did you find out you'd be starting today was that a decision that was made this week or did that go back a little longer yeah it was this week um yeah coach trailer uh told me this week so yeah what was your reaction when that happened when you heard the news that you'd be having that opportunity yeah I was excited obviously like any competitor is um but my job is to do my role as best as I can so so that was part of it anything else for Owen we'll thank you Owen thanks Owen
