on a tragic night in New Jersey the hockey world lost two of its brightest stars Johnny godo and his brother Matthew godo they were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes just hours before they were set to serve as groomsmen at their sister's [Music] wedding Johnny godo known as Johnny hockey was not just a remarkable player but a beloved member of the hockey Community with a career spanning 11 seasons he was a seven time NHL Allstar and had left an indelible mark on the sport drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2011 Johnny quickly became a fan favorite his enthusiasm on the ice was matched only by his kindness offit in 2022 he joined the Columbus Blue Jackets where he continued to bring joy to fans with his dazzling skills and passion for the game but John was more than just a hockey player he was a devoted husband and a loving father his wife Meredith shared a heartfelt tribute remembering Johnny as the best dad in the world and the apple of their daughter Noah's eye Meredith wrote thank you for the best years of my life I'm still the luckiest girl in the world to have been yours Matthew godo Johnny's younger brother was also deeply rooted in the hockey world at after his own playing career he returned to their Alma moer Gloucester Catholic High School to coach inspiring young athletes with his passion for the game the loss of the godo brothers has been felt across the sports Community memorials have been set up outside Arenas and moments of Silence have been observed at games across the NHL Major League Baseball and [Music] more the driver Shan Higgins has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide Higgins admitted to drinking five to six beers before the crash stating that his impatience led to the reckless driving that caused the accident Johnny and Matthews Legacy extends beyond the ice they were Role Models mentors and beloved family members who gave back to their community in countless ways the godo brothers will forever never be remembered for their passion kindness and the joy they brought to everyone around them our hearts go out to their family friends and the entire hockey community
