all right we're going to talk about two pieces of Lantern's casting news first some new actors are apparently in the works for Hal Jordan some older actors apparently are out of it and then I want to talk a little bit about the John Stewart role but first Hal Jordan okay so we had three actors originally as of last time that we talked about this that were in the running for how Jordan it was Josh broland Matthew mccon and youan McGregor I don't think I need to give credits to them but let's say Thanos Interstellar noi want Kenobi those are the three Thanos Josh Bolin apparently had the offer and he is apparently declined this is all according to like you know Insider people and scoopers and I'm not sure if any of this is true but it seems true cuz people are talking about it nobody has said that it's not true but then you've got Matthew mccon apparently he also declined which means according to the scoopers and people that you and McGregor the balls in his court he has if he wants it the role of Hal Jordan in lanterns now I think this is fascinating because when I said this in my last video he's the one that is the most interesting to me because you don't know exactly what you're getting and with those other guys you know what you're getting you're getting True Detective you're getting cable it's going to be a really tough operator who maybe doesn't play by the rules because he's seen so much and now he has to work with someone who's more by the books I don't know like it's like Training Day not at the same levels but like that kind of dynamic but you and McGregor it's like are we getting Obi-Wan Kenobi are we getting his character from birds of prey are we getting his character from Fargo like which of his characters from Fargo are we getting he's just got a lot of range this is unusual project for him to take which leads leads me to believe if it takes this role we're getting something interesting however two other actors are apparently in the running for Hal and these two actors did come up in the days past but now they're in these lists and it seems like we have like the hierarchy the new hierarchy now that brolan and mcah are out it goes like this you McGregor still number one he still has the offer Underneath Him little actor you may have heard of from uh the movie Wonder Woman uh Chris Pine so Steve Trevor and you know Captain Kirk and the guy from one of The Princess Diaries I think or something I'm not sure what else people know him from but Chris Pine is apparently in the running here and that is both surprising and not surprising anybody who's ever thought of this for a second is been like oh yeah Chris Pine could do this role but on the other hand that's kind of already what Steve Trevor is so it's like do you want to do this twice like do people want to see this again I I don't know I honestly don't have an answer for that the other actor who seems to be one rung below these guys is Timothy oant who most people probably know for playing cob V and the Mandalorian and he's also you know Justified he's Santa Clarita diet is one of my favorite things that he's done he's a very also very interesting actor very Charming I would say more than Brolin for sure he is a smiley guy like you kind of expect this character and this is you know for my someone limited although like seen a lot of stuff with him in it I think he's tough I think he can play tough obviously that's Justified but I also think he can play Charming you know the Marshall like in Mandalorian I think if they want that in Green Lantern a character who is trusted respected by the community but also has a dark side that's actually a really good pull Timothy oant I also think I read this somewhere Timothy oont is one of the actress who was up for Iron Man originally I don't know if that's true but um if that's true then like yeah he's got the superhero face like he's just he's good and Chris Pine I think maybe has played too many iconic roles to pick up another one that's so similar to one of his other iconic roles like he's a fighter pilot and then in this he's a test pilot like just I don't know do I think he could do it sure I also have a hard time as just me seeing Chris Pine playing the older like wiser seasoned character I'm used to him playing the opposite of that like in that movie where the train was Unstoppable I think the movie was called Unstoppable he was the young guy who didn't listen to Denzel but it's interesting cuz over the last 20 years I've watched him transition from the kid role to maybe now this but I think out of all the actors that are in this list he's the one you only one that I have trouble with there is like can he play the season veteran I I think he can and that seems like what they're going for with this Hal Jordan basis on everything they've said and the other actors they've cast that seems like what they want like y McGregor anybody's guess I could see Obi-Wan Kenobi I could see this being a character who has a past that was shrouded to mystery and things went maybe badly but he's still beloved and like on the outside he's black mask he's high-fiving people and he's signing autographs and stuff and on the inside he's Obi-Wan going toob be like he sad because he failed some really important Mission I don't know this is not based on any specific Green Lantern story so it's not as simple as like Supergirl or Swamp Thing where it's clear what they're going to adapt with lanterns it's like they can maybe take some risks and do some things that are unexpected especially because David Lindelof one of the people behind Watchmen which was a perfect example of like taking an adaptation taking existing work and really doing something new with it but remaining at least I believe true to the source material so that that is all to say I think the fact that we're down to these three actors does show a lot of range like we are looking for different things personally the name in this list that excites me the most and just because I think he'd be good at it is Timothy o theond because for me that matches up with how Jordan he is charming he protects people he's this law man I don't think you know sometimes the lanterns are more just beat cops but they can play as Cowboys that's obviously a lane for these guys to to work in and you know it seems like they're also going for kind of detectives that seems to be the vibe of what this series is going to be which is why True Detective gets brought up so many times in a comparison but like I don't know I could just see it so he's the one that I in my heart like the most Timothy or the font just in terms of which one I think would be the most exciting it's definitely you and McGregor just because again I don't know what that is like I don't know what we're getting and I think that would jit up a lot of excitement because people would go oh it's UD McGregor from Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi oh he's going to be a Green Lantern wow I didn't even think of that he's I've never fan casted him as that before and hey look he's a Jedi and now he's a Green Lantern you know those are very similar skill sets you have a magical weapon that kind of works based on Willpower and belief and I don't know I think that I think that fits very nicely so I'm going to say I do think you and McGregor is very possible uh and I'd be very interested in that uh but there's a little part of me now that like now that we're down to the last three or at least this this last three I assume if these three don't take it they'll find someone else but um now that he's in the the final three to the oila font I'm I'm really digging that and as to say nothing about Chris Pine that he's not good I think he's very good but yeah he's just we've seen it before right kind of we can I'm sure he could bring something new to the table but it's just not as exciting for that reason and I think one of the things that's important about the new DCU like this James gun project is it does feel new feels like another attempt at this superhero Universe from a different angle with a different vibe so I think getting as much of the baggage off of this universe by shedding some of the actors in that continuity I think that is good even if he's not playing that same character I don't know I I still don't I'm not positive that it's worth it that being said I'm sure you do a good job so that's how Jordan on the other side we've got our John Stewart so these are two actors that according to well not even according to CU this is like I guess like public record as much as any of these things are so Tom King one of the writers of this lanterns TV series along with many Comics followed two actors on Instagram damson Idris and Aaron Pierre it seems like those are two actors that could be potential John Stewarts especially considering the age and the dynamic that would be like they're in their early 30s and then you would have a Hal Jordan in his you know 50s that that feels right like that feels like what they're going for how it's been described um they're both very popular upand cominging actors I've not seen Damon just feels like his main credit is a show called snowfall which I have not watched I'll check it out eventually it's been a very busy couple weeks on the other hand we have Aaron Pierre who obviously huge old fans like me know as midsize sedan uh the most Preposterous name in the history of movies but beyond that he just had a huge performance in a movie called Rebel Ridge it's by the people who made green room so it is very tense it's I would say it's got a different field in Green Room so it's not if you if you didn't love that and you felt like that was a little too much this is a little less but it's still very like it it is it is just tense that's that's the best way to describe it I I enjoyed it I think it was great uh it's on Netflix right now and it stars Aaron Pierre uh Don Johnson who I also really like speaking of people from Watchman and uh people who have no problem playing a jerk cop who is bad and does bad things like I love that like I appreciate an actor who just plays a really good bad guy and then Anna sopia Rob uh is also those those are the big three actors but anyway um Aaron Pierre I think because of this movie and this character he plays is a marine I think combat instructor he's everything want want from John Stewart he's very composed very tough very smart he's got that military attitude and he's just a big guy who can beat up a lot of people which I wouldn't say is like necessarily but like all the Green Lanterns are all kind of superhero looking guys so I think Aaron Pier fits that part of the role nicely and I so I totally understand why a lot of people right now looking at these two actors um having probably not seen old so not being super familiar with Aaron Pierre and to be fair he's in other stuff and he's going to be in Mufasa so that'll be big uh for him but looking at just these two and seeing this Rebel Ridge movie come out it feels like a John Stewart audition tape the only reason I'm bringing these guys up again because not much has changed besides I watch that movie and it's great is there's been a lot of discourse at least I've seen a lot of discourse on Twitter about colorism in relation to JN Stewart Aaron Pierre and Damon Idris because just looking at Aaron pier and Dam cedrus like Dam cus they're both black men Dam cus much darker skinn what does that matter like they're both black so they should both technically be able to play this character you would assume but when you look at Hollywood there's been an aversion over you know long periods of time including quite recently and potentially even now to Casting actors with darker skin if you look at storm is a good example cuz like you know John Stewart's a character outside of the one Zack Snider post-credit scene that he filmed in his backyard that didn't make it into the movie like we've never seen him on screen in live action but uh we've seen two storms at least uh with Hal Berry and Alexander ship both of them on the later skin side and nothing guess I think both the performances were were good I mean and Hal Berry's halleberry like she was a humongous star at the time she was just either coming off or about to win an Oscar so obviously I'm not trying to make the point that you didn't deserve it but when you look at storm in the comics storm is traditionally drawn with very dark black skin and it makes sense she is an African you know goddess Queen at at certain points in her career so like she has uh very dark skin and yet in movies that doesn't come through like they do not take to hire actors with dark skin I think and I talked about this in my casting video jod Turner Smith who just saw in the acolyte like I think she is an actor who's currently working who definitely play a good storm and also does have dark skin so like those actors exist they're out there the other character that always comes up is Sunspot Berto doosra now he is not in as many things and not as many people are familiar with Sunspot but his backstory is very much tied to the fact that he's a darkskinned Brazilian who gets bullied for being dark skinned and that is like part of his mutant origin story so a lot of people were pretty upset when Henry zaga an actor who again I think was okay in that movie uh was cast as Roberto because he is on the lighter skin side so regardless of whether like you specifically have an opinion about it you care about it like just look at those two examples this is something that happens and also the only reason I bring it up is because it it's something where whenever it comes up I just want to be like yes whatever everybody's right like if you are black and you think that this actor does not repres present John Stewart the way that he should because of colorism and you think it should be another actor maybe Damon Eis but maybe just a different actor uh who has darker skin that's valid or on the other side if you're a black person who's like no I like him I think he's good and I think he would fill that role well that is also true there's just really no point in like me like a a White Guy saying like no I think he is black enough I'm just saying like on the merits of the performance that he did in that movie Rebel Ridge I think that is a very John performance everything else is and I'm sure this is something that James gun Peter Safford and everybody working on this show I've thought about a lot I'm sure they've see if they haven't thought about before they're thinking about it now because they're seeing the discourse and I'm sure they will make whatever decision they think is best so I guess I'm saying when this comes up as someone who speaks about casting and fan casting comic book characters on the internet I understand that this is something that is important to people there's really nothing I can say like I think colorism is definitely an issue and it is something that the industry needs to address and in some respects you know like Eddie thetti is Mr trific that's good uh there not a lot of other you just actors cast in the DCU yet so we'll see where they go with the rest of it but like that that's a good start but like in this specific individual case like the John Stewart thing I will defer to the black content creators out there who uh know better than I do like if if they say you know what this isn't an issue really that colorism seems to be a huge effect into like we love a let's do it this is great and if they don't then that's another thing and nobody's it's not a monolith you know there's not going to be an opinion but uh if there was it shouldn't come from me so that's all I got to say uh we will talk when we find out who our Hal Jordans and our John Stewarts and everybody are and I will say there is the option that they're in running for different roles right we know Tom King followed them and they're both of the age and race and like build that you would expect from a John Stewart but like I've seen people positioning this it's not crazy to assume that maybe Damon Edris is is playing John Stewart and Aaron Pierre is playing Martian Manhunter another character who is a detective kind of guy from space I mean he's not like always a detective but he does take the form of a detective on Earth so like if this is a detective story you fit right in and he's from another planet and he's green not that that matters but like that's that's kind of interesting so I think that that could uh totally be what this is and this conversation while important and interesting may be 100% moot like that that could be uh different scenario but uh you know we'll see anyway that's all I got stay safe I'll see you next time
