we're going to turn now to a new HBO docu series by people who own chimpanzees Chim crazy's from the director of the hit show Tiger King Eva Pilgrim is here with the story good morning Eva Good morning George the series gives you a glimpse of what it looks like to own a chimp and raises the question should people own these wild animals for many of these chimp owners they view these primates as their children and they're not willing to just give them up Bo this morning chimp crazy a new HBO series created by the director Tiger King drawing tough criticism both for its stars and the way it was made I love these chimps more than anything in the world and I mean more than anything more than my kids the series largely focuses on Tanya hadex a woman who calls herself the Dolly Parton of chimps and her relationship with a movie star chimp named Tonka who was featured in films like George of the Jungle Tanya admitting in the series that she was willing to give her life for Tonka I'll do anything to protect that primate anything chimp crazy takes you inside the world of private exotic animal ownership viewers following Tanya as she fights to keep her chimps in a legal battle with Peta even hiding her favorite Tonka by faking his death after a judge ordered she turned all her chimps over to a rescue group Peta say Tanya was never qualified to run a Setter for chimpanzees highlighting the animals living conditions and diet claims Tanya disputes she is not qualified to care for chimpanzees she does not have any formal training she's simply someone who likes chimpanzees Tanya finding the criticism she's received in the wake of the premiere difficult it's all been crazy and tough um I'm I wear my heart on my sleeve but it's not just Tanya's actions that have been called into question many also critical of how the documentary was made Eric good showcasing how he hired a proxy director to work with the chimp owners so they wouldn't know he was behind the series in 2020 I made Tiger King Tiger King shined a spotlight on this community and it wasn't favorable so for this project I had to hire a proxy director to go undercover there's supposed to be ethics that this documentary is about it's supposed to be about telling the truth and the entire connection of the filmmaker to his subjects is based around this lie Tanya saying she was quote angry and hurt by the ruse when they approached me I asked specifically are you sure this has no connection with Eric good good entertainment Tiger King and they swore to me it had none or I wouldn't have done it ABC News reached out to HBO and good they declined to comment Tanya now owns and runs a safari in Missouri they have camels kangaroos wab bees and more and she tells us she would love to have another CH however she knows that is unlikely but she says she would also be interested in getting an orangutang or a gibbon wow yeah she loves animals she does love animals okay all right we love you e we'll see you on G3 thank you
