[Music] coming up Center Stage vice president kamla Harris and former president Donald Trump square off in the presidential debate what you need to know then science of sport just how do athletes accomplish amazing feats the answer lies partly in science we'll tell you about that also many kids and grown-ups are flipping over the picture of Olympic gold medalist Hesley Rivera will explain plus this baby gorilla is catching our and so is Alex Morgan the soccer Legend just played the final game of her career we're there with details and we'll hear from fans who she inspired so what does Alex Morgan mean to you uh she means like a lot because she was like a she's like a hero to us and she's been the one who made me want to play soccer and she's very like positive about women's rights and speaking of Legends NBA Allstar Steph Curry is here to talk about his new project just for kids this graphic novel hopefully can bring my full art of where I was born learning how to play the game of basketball all the ups and downs that I've had uh but bring it in a way that gives them inspiration and I think a little energy to find whatever it is for themselves that's amazing and the Warriors guard is also sharing some important advice [Music] absolutely this is NBC Nightly News Kids edition welcome back to night News Kids edition it is great to be with you we have a terrific program in store for you including a pop quiz and it's a timely one then for all you sports fans we have a terrific lineup from Steph Curry to Alex Morgan and Vance Walker the teen with cereal poliy just made American Ninja Warrior history as a two-time winner and a bit later on one eighth grader was on a mission to change the academic calendar but before we get to all that let's begin with one of the St is making headlines this week vice president kamla Harris the Democratic nominee for president and former president Donald Trump the Republican nominee for president debated each other on Tuesday it was the first time the two met in person remember a debate is a formal discussion on a particular topic or maybe a group of topics where the participants Express different opinions and defend their positions debates are an important part of our election process here in the United States the presidential election will take place in November but you have to be 18 years and older to vote and that brings us to our Pop Quiz question this week how old do you have to be to run for president of the United States a 18 B 25 or C 35 I'll give you a few seconds to think about it okay time's up the answer is C 35 that's right according to the US Constitution a person must be at least 35 to run for president of the United States well meantime another story in the news this week is Hurricane Francine so we thought it would be a good time to explain just what a hurricane is and what you and your families can do to stay safe let's get details from our good pal Al Roker weather is something we experience every day Weck to see what we wear if our ball game's going to be cancelled and when we can go outside to play with our friends we have sunny days rainy ones and sometimes really Stormy Weather one of the planet's strongest storms is a hurricane but how does it form a hurricane is a large and Powerful storm with winds that can reach up to 200 mph from space they look like a giant spinning pin wheel hundreds of miles across clouds rotating around the center where conditions are clear and calm this is called the eye hurricanes form in water that's at least 80° in the Atlantic Ocean most hurricanes form when the water is warmest between June and November the water warms the air above it causing it to rise as the air rises clouds and thunderstorms form to replace the rising air winds at the surface start to rush in this air Also Rises and forms even more clouds making the storm bigger and stronger the winds get faster and faster and when they reach 39 mph it's a tropical storm and gets a name when the winds hit 74 mph it's officially a hurricane as long as hurricanes stay out over the ocean they're pretty harmless but sometimes winds can push the Hurricanes toward land they might curve to the north and miss us but other times they hit the coastline with heavy rain flooding and strong winds what are the three things you can do to make sure you and your family are prepared know where to get weather information weather.gov noah. nhc.gov and your local news know where you'll go like with a relative or to a shelter a list of important items to take with you including a flashlight a phone a tablet charger and favorite snacks talk to your folks make a plan and you'll be ready if a storm comes your way okay Al thanks for very much well in other news the Paro Olympic Games just wrapped up which was an awesome time to celebrate the achievements of these athletes the paralympic games came just weeks after the Summer Olympic Games in Paris and with these amazing displays have you ever wondered just how athletes accomplish such incredible Feats well the answer lies in just a little science our friend Dylan dryer explains whether you're playing basketball or just jumping up and down why do we land on the ground well it's because of something called gravity a force that pulls everything to the ground without gravity there would be no life on Earth and certainly no Olympic gold medalists a long long time ago an English scientist named Sir Isaac Newton was the first known person to study and discover the laws of motion the first law states that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an un unbalanced force for example a basketball will remain at rest unless it's picked up and dribbled by an unbalanced force like a basketball player and once a player aims and shoots at the basket the force of gravity is responsible for the ball coming back down to the court gravity is the force that appear as soon as you have two masses close to each other if you have two body they attract each other and they attract each other in proportion of their mass and this attraction force is called gravity gravity is also really important when it comes to Newton's Second Law which states that the acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied a good example of this is in gymnastics a gymnast running to do a series of somersaults and twists the gymnast has to gain speed in order to apply more force and go higher into the air the faster you go the higher you will uh jump right but guess what water is much more dense than air so swimmer interact differently with gravity in the pool in fact that's where Newton's third law comes into play which states that when two objects come into contact every action will have an equal and opposite reaction so when a swimmer pushes water backwards with their arms and feet the water will push back against the swimmer in the opposite direction propelling the swimmer forward it takes countless hours of dedication training and commitment to push Olympic medalists to break World Records and soar past the competition and the rest is simply up to science all right thanks so much D and well speaking of athletes it's time for our picture of the week and it's a fun one 16-year-old Olympic gold medalist Hesley Rivera the youngest member of the US Olympic women's gymnastics team threw out the first pitch in a game between the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees recently in Arlington Texas and get this the teen added her own special touch doing a flip as she threw out the ceremonial pitch following her pitch the Rangers posted photos from the event on social media writing a perfect 10 for Olympic gold medalist Hesley Rivera that is awesome all right turning to this week's kids Spotlight NBA Allstar and Olympic gold medalist Steph Curry has a new project out just for kids our kids edition correspondent Isaac caught up with the basketball legend to find out all about [Music] it NBA superstar Stephen Curry is a four-time NBA champ two-time League MVP a 10-time Allstar and is considered one of the greatest Shooters of all time seven Curry just came out here was talking to the kids there's a lot of excitement going on right now Curry is at the Today's Show promoting his exciting new children's book and the kids are hyped up to meet the sports legend what's your name Adama Adama and are you excited to see Sapp and Curry out here yeah you see him on TV what's like different that you noticed in person he's very tall like he's much taller in real life I was thinking that also like you you see him on the basketball court and compared to all those other guys he looks short but he's [Music] not you still this what's your motivation of doing a book geared for kids me and iisha were blessed to have kids of our own and you kind of see the books they bring home from school and a way for me to be able to share my story in a very creative way this graphic novel hopefully can bring my full Arc of where I was born learning how to play the game of basketball all the ups and downs that I've had uh but bring it in a way that gives them inspiration and I think a little energy to to find whatever it is for themselves that's amazing you've won four NBA championships you've broken numerous records and often as kids we're told to like learn from our mistakes so through your journey have you ever had mistakes that you were able to learn from and become even better you give you everything that you have for me to basketball and doesn't mean that you're going to find success you know you miss shots you lose games uh you make dumb decisions on the court you have to maintain your confidence that you can work through that stuff life teaches you a lot for me to be able to share a little bit of that with kids and know that they're going to go through stuff you you're going to get knocked down uh things aren't going to go your way like how do you respond right and it sounds easy but you have to continue to share that message absolutely in your book you talk about you're not being tall enough or strong enough and your mom told you that you're going to have to write your own story with everyone telling you you can't do something that must be really tough how did you just tune everyone out to your point like people telling you what you can't do what you're not and comparison as a thief the thief of Joy right the more that I actually locked in on what I can do and what I I love to do and how you know what makes me unique and what makes me special and lean into that it boosts your confidence to know like you don't have to worry about what somebody else is doing you don't have to compare yourself to somebody else I can run my own race and you know what's going to be for me will be your game will do the talking 100% and uh it's what you tell yourself that's important kids my age both boys and girls working on their basketball skills would love to hear some tips or advice on how to improve the shot everybody shoots differently it's not so much about trying to shoot like somebody is just can you put the most amount of time in can you prepare as if if you're playing basketball in a game can you train at the same speed that you would do in a game and practice and challenge yourself really demand greatness from yourself with everything that you do that'll help you get to to the level that you want to get to we have actually a question from the crowd wae you have a question for Stephen Curry what do you do off the court that helps you on the court off the court I try to make sure I see myself aom push in whatever I want to like see myself making a shot I see myself making a great pass I see myself playing great defense and you hopefully manifest that that'll happen during the game and it gives you confidence and kind of relaxes you uh cuz I still get nervous playing basketball cuz I love it so much and I want to be great so the more that I can visualize myself being successful I think the easier it gets thank you so much for your time thank you great [Music] question we're out here just finished the in interview with Stephen Curry and one big takeaway was that if someone tells you you can't do something put in the work and success will come with it Isaac that was awesome thanks so much my friend and in keeping with the sports theme we've got going here soccer Superstar Alex Morgan officially hung up her cleats our friend Liz KZ was there for the Bittersweet sendoff it was an emotional goodbye as Alex Morgan took the field for the final match of her 15-year [Applause] career the legendary Soccer Star playing the first 13 minutes a nod to her number before officially hanging up her cleats the two-time Women's World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist has long been a force on the field and off helping draw in new fans and demand equal pay for female players it's really what we set out to do equalized on all fronts and we've been able to achieve that now 35 Morgan announced her retirement just days ago saying she's expecting her second child the hand I had in pushing the game forward and leaving it in a place that I'm so happy and proud of at her final match with the San Diego wave so many young women there to say goodbye I think she just represents our childhood and everyone's childhood I mean everyone grew up with her she's done so much for the sport I think it's hard to think about soccer without her these 9-year-old girls telling us Morgan inspired them to start playing tell me what you wrote on your sign here uh well we wrote uh Alex Morgan you can still make the whole place Shimmer in your retirement is that a Taylor Swift reference yes and what do you say here we will miss you Alex so what does Alex Morgan mean to you uh she means like a lot because she was like a she's like a hero to us and she's been the one who's made me want to play soccer and she's very like positive about women's rights Morgan later reacting to those comments what does that mean to you and what is your message to the next generation of women's soccer players I think it's just so incredible to be able to see you know the 26,000 out here tonight and week in and week out just so many little girls little boys showing up so I'm really proud of the part I played and how it got to where it is today and how women's soccer is so accessible nowadays and my message to those young girls or boys waiting for their turn is just to work hard and believe in yourself her own four-year-old daughter by her side for the celebration just thank you but now so many fans say it's her they should be [Music] [Applause] thanking Liz thanks so much we want to update you now on a story we first brought to you back in May 19-year-old Vance Walker who has cble paly just made history the team just became the first ever back-to-back champion on NBC's American Ninja Warrior the competitor from Florida earned the $1 million prize with a second consecutive win in season 16 in the finale Walker climbed the rope in an incredible 27.6 seconds a second faster than the runner up the teen has inspired Legions of fans with his attitude and athleticism congratulations Vance way to go okay now to a story that caught our friend Cameron limes has a story June 27 to September meet 14-year-old Isaac rager the eighth grader has always been good with numbers and loves to spell that's the biggest word that you know how to spell yeah I don't know maybe super calistic xad there's no way you know how to spell that s u p e r c a l i f r a g i l i s t i c e x p i a l i d o c i o u s did I spell that correctly wow that is so impressive one day Isaac noticed something on the school calendar that didn't make sense to him the upcoming winter break is scheduled to begin on Tuesday December 24th and run through the following Wednesday January 1st so that means Isaac and the other students would have to go to school for just one day that first week after talking to his parents Isaac decided the academic calendar needed to change to make the change Isaac started a petition a petition is a document that multiple people signed to show that they agree with the change they want to make Isaac's petition was a huge success and got thousands of signatures even making it into his local paper when Isaac shared that he created a petition about changing the breake for this upcoming School Year my immediate thought was oh gosh here he goes here he goes here goes our Isaac Isaac didn't stop there after getting thousands of signatures he decided to reach out to the mayor of New York City Eric Adams NBC reached out to the city of New York and they told us in a written statement that while they are proud of students speaking up they still want students to plan on being in school on the 23rd of December despite the lack of change Isaac's teachers are still proud of him I was so proud of him for like advocating for himself and advocating for the students and like just wanting that to the extent to which we have seen this grow is really a test of it to who he is never underestimate the power of your voice and the power of your words right words matter and what you have to say matters and there's always someone listening one student trying to make a difference and Inspire others I can see you smiling how does that make you feel feel proud of myself for doing a petition for Nightly News Kids edition I'm
