College Football Week 1: North Carolina vs. Minnesota

e e he can diagnose a defense in real time really excited to see this kid play finds a receiver in the middle of the field solid gain there moves the ball out to the 32 it's a big risk to play manto Man coverage by this defense and this time they get caught great between the quarterback and his receiver you can see what can happen when that timing is right big things can [Applause] happen first down looking to throw the ball here's a shot toward the right sideline down shots incomplete couldn't quite connect there they don't hit this pass but I love the approach here as a play caller taking a shot and being aggressive getting that down stretching that defense try to keep those safties back it can open up other aspects of your off incomplete so second down in 10 back to pass it's Johnson it's a quick grab they bring him down just of the mar away from a first this is an example of a quarter and his just taking what the defense gives you not a huge play but positive yards the defense wants to give that throw get the ball to your receiver stay ahead of the sticks they pick up the first on the ground he's found some room with the 45 tackled inside the 40 and it's good enough for a first down boy an opportunity missed here by this defense they get him to third down they load up the line of scrimmage but they could not deny this back of coming up with that conversion and the tars to keep this drive moving the quarterback keeps it on the option hit him behind the line out comes the football defense jumps on the ball it's a turnover I get being upset at the ball C for coughing up the ball but let's not ignore how big of a hit that was sometimes you just have to give credit to the defender for making a great play [Applause] fresh set it out for the offense first down Quick Pass here comes a Jet Sweep po through tackle is made very near Midfield good enough for a first down the defense has got to do a much better job here adjusting to the pr snap motion they just kind of stayed in place and it gave the receiver plenty of room there to make a nice play see what the call is on First and [Applause] 10 quarterback drops back finds that big tight end for a short pass tackle made after a nice pick up on the play the tight end drag route is the perfect option for an offense looking to that position open for some yardage perfect execution here for a first down the drive stays alive with that for a first down back in motion now looking down field it's brosmer fires it to the Wi out incomplete but a late flag comes in a lot of contact pass inter defense man playing defensive back is got to be the toughest job out there right now in college football you get isolated on Islands against these freaky talented receivers it's hard to be able to stay up with them and try to make a play on the ball and often you end up buing them down field and you get a call like this offense getting set it's second [Applause] down keeping it on the ground here they try the middle but gain nothing on that play was an excellent this defense just staying in their run F holding their own at the line of scrimmage and then making a tackle offense just couldn't get enough of a push to get any yards at all offense been in Reverse here now a long way to go to convert this third down dropping back he going to throw for the first down intercepted picked off by the defense that's a solid return after the interception Chris he's just trying to find the hole in his own coverage but as you know those windows can open and close pretty quickly especially in the middle of the field so the timing's got to be just right or you're going to see an interception like this and here comes the North Carolina offense back out onto the field they got into plus territory last time but the drive ended on a fumble they got to shake that off immediately we start the drive with a quick throw to the right any good offense has to have a reliable quick to intermediate passing even though that wasn't enough for the first it's like this it help you sustain drives and not get stuck with third down and long the play here on second down for this offense they flip it to him on the Jet Sweep and the tels pick up enough yard to move the sticks a nice little Simple Touch pass here by the quarterback getting the ball out to the receiver Who's In Motion look that doesn't turn into a huge play but they do pick up a first down and no offense is ever going to say no to moving the chains you set of downs for the offense first and 10 he'll hand it off oh there's the stiff arm they got him down out near the 40 great job by his offensive line here opening up some holes and giving the running back room to run on first down this can open up the playbook for the play caller allow him to make that defense think they going to run maybe play action maybe throw the ball down field here's the second down play back to throw it's Johnson quarterback delivers complete to the right side big play across Midfield now they're threatening at the opponent's 38 you know we talked this week with the offensive coordinator about what makes this receiver so special he to his route running here's an example of that great route enough separation to give the quarterback a nice Lane to throw the football linebackers making some adjustments now and the Tar Heels hustle to the line to run the hurry up the tight end goes in motion before the snap play action here on first down looking for the wide out he pulls it in for a big gain tackle made at the 21 but this offense is in great position to add more points you know you roll the dice here as a defense when you play manto Man the thing is you've got to get pressure on the quarterback if you don't he's got time and now he can look at that defense and figure out where is his best one-on-one match up and he makes a big play there [Applause] [Applause] looking to throw it on first down defense is coming after him and he just throws it away there safe Mo and nobody open Chris on this play he has nobody open it's better than taking a sack he doesn't get intentional grounding because where he threw it there was an intended receiver no harm no foul here second down after the incompletion hand off to the single back they'll stop him behind the line for L and one that play just didn't have much of a chance at all from the snap quarterback hands this off and nowhere to go it's almost like the defense was anticipating the play call and they put themselves in a position to come up with a nice tackle for a loss seventh play of the drive coming up but it is third down at long dropping back going to throw for the first down oh it's bed down by the defense great play to deny a touchdown hey it's an incompletion but it's a nice job by the quarterback I know it didn't pan out but the most important thing is he didn't turn the football over and he didn't take a sack it'll give your kicker a chance to put some points on the board if they opt for the field goal here on fourth down looks like the coach decides to go for three points here here comes the field goal team straight down the middle so we have our first points on the board that makes it three nothing snap the ho the kick everything they're perfect to put three points up here for the offense They Come Away with three points on the drive and now the kickoff team will boot it away they return it from inside the 10 yd line and the CI ends in and brings him down and the Minnesota offense takes the field his offense trying to bounce back the last possession and then in a pick and looking to throw now on down he's running out of time here he stays alive and it's the senior getting home with the sack well the defense would not be denied on this play they come up with a sack the quarterback really didn't have much of a chance at all lucky he just held on to the ball the offense will look to regroup here at second and 11 they'll run it here that's the running back with the ball tackle may but it moves the ball to the 25 as they try to get this drive going look I realize on any play call was properly executed it can go to the house for a touchdown but the runs that really make a game plan work are the ones where you get just what you need and he barely got the first down but he got first down here for this offense they'll run it from the gun gain of two yard now it's second down and eight see that's how you limit what an offense wants to do this time the defense just the battle up front at the line of scage not giv up any big plays everybody's Gap sound it's really solid defense on that play second down after that run on the previous play pre- snap motion from the offense looking to throw it's brosmer receiver makes the catch and the defense swarms not much of a gain on that completion quarterback looks down Feld to make this throw he wants to be able to get the ball to be able to pick up enough yards for a first down but instead he gets the ball at least underneath to the drag route and gets some positive yards crucial third down play right here offense looking to throw the ball short pass finds the tight end they keep the drive going it's a first down at the 46 that's a great play by this offense to keep the drive alive and a good find by the quarterback on third down and the golden go for pick up first down yardage to keep the drive going [Applause] they'll run it here the sen able to make the stop after a short game hat on a hat up front good job opening up the holes anytime you can get positive yards on first down that's a win important second down play coming up from the shotgun it's a hand off and they finally stop him but G that time well they didn't bust that for a big play but it makes this third down coming up a little bit more manageable and that certainly has a lot of value it's third down for the offense a quick throw out left complete that game will pick up a first down and move the football to the 36 well it's third down the knows he's going to get the ball you still can't stop the quarterback finding this receiver to be able to pick up another first down for this offense the Golden Gophers will have first and 10 [Applause] here looking to throw it's brosmer looks down field and finds a receiver who worked his way wide open he stop at the 22 this offense in great scoring position now and there's the tight end who shows off his hand this line getting set up it's a first down play takes the hand off and tests the left side down after a seven yd gain so it's second and three I tell you to be able to pick up a nice gain like that those offensive linemen have to sustain their blocks gave them a chance at a really nice game and the golden goer is looking to cash in this Red Zone trip heading left after the handoff got space looking to score Runs Out of Bounds near the goal line couldn't quite get there you know offensive linemen are just a certain breed they're always going to do their job no matter who's back there carrying the ball I tell you what they have a little bit more confidence when the person that's carrying the ball can break off some big time runs that makes him block just a little bit harder knowing what he's potentially capable doing and he runs it into the end zown Minnesota can you say methodical Marathon mar Just pounding away and wearing down that defense they just kept moving the sticks and moving the sticks until they got into the Red Zone and they just kept moving to the sticks until they got into the end zone what a drive now the try here for the extra point kick goes through so it's S3 now they get set to kick it away [Applause] here's the return from inside the five and he stopped at the 19 good job by the coverage team and the tels offense back out on the field remember it was a field goal on the last possession let's see what they can come up with this time he'll hand it off they'll tackle him at the 27 man you know the back gets a lot of the attention here he's a good love to see that offensive line win the battle the line of scen off get set second down play [Applause] here to throw it's Johnson receiver makes the grab he bring him down but he makes the four yd line that's a solid gain it's really good timing here between the quarterback and reer and how about the receiver downfield does a nice job of finding that open space in the zone of the defense and as a defense you're just basically throwing your hands up in the air because they had that covered relatively well just a good play call and good [Applause] execution here comes a first down pass attempt takes a shot as he lets it Go the pass is Dr incomplete would have had a huge gain took his eye off the ball a really nice job by this defense not only do they pressure the quarterback and get after him but I don't think they tip their hand with their coverage they actually waited to the last possible second to bracket this receiver and almost paid off for an interception the shotgun hand off heree er over the years has always grown offensively I've been always impressed defenses that really build their defense to play in space still have an ability to be sound the scage and defend a running game it's exactly what we saw right there challenging play for the offense they face third and long here from their own 43 dropping back we going to throw for the first down the pass rush closing in there no one to throw to there on third down and now it's a fourth down coming up [Applause] and the tels will have to kick it away and the fair catch signal for and taken and the Minnesota offense takes the field they had a brilliant touchdown Drive last time mixing the run in the pass can they keep that going again the G moves the ball to the 20 yd line I really like to see the counter in there with your base Concepts to keep the defense honest now they didn't burst a big but if you keep mixing it in as the game progresses catch the defense over pursuing second down after that run on the previous [Applause] play from the shotgun now here's an inside give brought down but not before shaking off the first Defender and piing up the first down Chris it's the consistency back is given this defense fits they've got to come up with some changes up front this guy's already over 50 yards and if he keeps running the way he is not only is he having a great day but it's going to give this quarterback a chance to hit some big plays down field off play action off the play fake looking to throw caught behind the line it's Jackson and they'll step out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage there the defense Pursuit forced him out after a first down loss it's second and long in the [Applause] 23 and they have it off to the back that's a nice tackle there by the senior the offense now facing a third and long from the 26 got to avoid a mistake here dropping back looking to throw for the first down over the middle it's Williams tackle after a solid gain that's enough for a first down and that should WRA up the first quarter play and it's Minnesota in front here let's check out the stat now through the open Period they flipped into the field ready now for the second period the golden goord are moving quickly down the field the offense with some pre- snap eye candy off the play fake looking to throw on first down that one Falls incomplete good defensive play brings up second down what a hit there by the defender tough for the receiver hold on to the football when has that contact good clean play by the defense offense set for the sixth play in this drive back goes in motion now let's see how the defense adjusts he's back to throw again on second down hey it's a game you get the sense that this offense wanted a little bit more than each play offense looking to keep the drive going here third and short now from the 44 looking to throw it again that's reeled in it's Taylor and the witer steps out of bounds but does have enough yardage to pick up the first down you know who's got to love this offense picking up so many first downs their own defense man when I played I used to defensive guys come down and tell me we'd have a long drive how much it would allow them to rest and go out and play dominant football on first down it's playaction it's a deep throw down the right sideline and he scores touchdown golden goers they were backed up to start the drive some play calling great exec reach the end zone you know it's easy to just kind of pull your horns in and get conservative when you're pushed way back close to your line but not this offense they came out showed the confidence that they have in their quarterback and it paid off nice touchdown extra point try coming now the p is good so it's a 143 lead here's the kickoff team Now set to boot this one away Fields it inside the 5 yd line and he stopped at the 20 tried to make something happen that's good coverage there the North Carolina offense is back out there on the field they were forced to PL it away last time so let's see if they can get click in possession and they'll bring him down after just a short pick up the defens coordinator this week all week telling us about Gap Integrity not giving this running back anyes at all really sound defense on that and the tels looking to run some Tempo here looks over the middle and that's complete to get him down quickly not a that completion well the defense didn't have any time at all to get pressure on the quarterback he gets the ball out of his hands pretty quickly on the hitch to the receiver so the off faces a third and manable here from the 25 yd line back to throw it's Johnson delivers from the pocket complete over the middle and the game just good enough for a first down well that's exactly how you Dice up a Zone coverage nice throw down field here on third down and a really good route to give the quarterback a chance to make that play and the tals line up on First and 10 now here's the handoff stopped at the 43 but that's enough to make a first down nothing better than an offense on first down to be able to pick up big positive yards like that you can either keep giving it to the back or it can set up play action and get the defense to come up to the line of scrimmage and you can throw it over top of it how aggressive do you get on First and [Applause] 10 there's the handoff the senior able to make the stop after a short game now it's second down here drops back from the shotgun looking for an open manes to avoid the rush and just gets of it it's incomplete he was hit as he that time and now third down coming up I talk to defensive coordinators all over the country and they're quick to point out the affecting the quarterback they they they kind of almost get offended when you want to talk to them about sack sometimes it's just about getting into his face affecting his vision it's exactly what they did right here bringing pressure the freshman's able to get home with a sack nothing is more gratifying for a defense to be able to sit back in Play Zone and still get pressure on the quarterback with your defensive front and the Tar Heels will line up to kick it away Mone he comes for his second pun of the [Applause] game'll see what he can do with the return the coverage team makes the stop on this return and the Minnesota offense takes the field passing game was so effective in the last position right down for a touchdown we'll see if the defense can make adjustments brought down for a loss after the completion not what they were looking for this is a great job of being prepared by this defense almost anticipating this play they're in position to bring him down for a loss he went backwards on first down so second and long from the 24 dropping back it's brosmer short throw complete to the tight end they stop him after a short gain it's not a first down boy that's pretty good coverage here by this defense not much of a window to throw this ball into but the quarterback's accuracy and the size the tight end picks up a nice game so the offense getting set this is not where you want to be against this defense third and long dropping back we going to throw for the first down junior steps up and an impact play how about that one of the soall little guys putting the pressure on the quarterback there that was a strong safety sneaking in I don't think the quarterback saw him and eventually he comes home with a sack and the golden go will line up to boot it away offense goes backwards on this dri he's on to punt it away now oh he's got some space here the returner is tackled by thist coverage team and here comes the North Carolina off back out onto the field last time they were forced to punt it away and they get points out of this possession it's a shotgun run call they bring it down but the gain moves the ball into enemy territory at the 43 was a nice job up front by the offive line will give the running back an assist for setting those blocks up before he's able to get down field for the first down offense will set up on First and [Applause] 10 there's the snap they'll set up to throw catch made on the out route he shoved out of bounds with the defense short of the first down marker there's a really great job here with the quarterback and the receiver this is all about timing gets back no hitch in his delivery gets the ball out in front of the receiver where he can run away from the defender for a nice completion that's the wide receiver coming in motion now a pop pass on the Jet Sweep they'll actually lose yard after the catch the defense all over in that time that's one of those that works against certain defensive looks but not every defense is the same they were all over that way let's see if they continue outside of the perimeter to set something up down field they're backed up here trying to make something happen on Third and [Applause] long now the play fake he'll look to throw it looking for his big tight end and he pulls in the catch touchdown North Carolina no chance to catch him so they find the reliable tight end he makes the defense pay that time know the receivers a lot of times get most of the attention but don't forget about how potent a tight end can be You' got a player like this who can run routes get a serious weapon that they can utilize and they just did right there ling up to try the extra point is good they still Trail though kickoff team has come on the field now to send this one away Fields it just outside the goal line they stop him at the 23 cover and the Minnesota offense takes the field this group is coming off a quick three and out can they put something together in this dve quarterback pulls the ball it's a keeper only a small gain now looking at second and nine not exactly the outcome this offense was hoping for here on the option they didn't lose any yards which is great I think they're definitely looking for more from that play second down play coming up decides to keep it here defense makes the tackle on the ball Carri boy the options dried up quickly for the quarterback here very very fortunate he was somehow able to get back to the line of scrimmage a tough situation for the offense third and long from their 25 let's see if the defense brings some heat here dropping back throw for the first down pulls it in it's Jackson and he'll get the first time yards before they finally bring him down and you just continue to see the chemistry between these two and they told us yesterday in our production meeting they spent hours and hours of working and developing that chemistry and that Rhythm by throwing together throughout those summer months and man it's starting to really pay off he's become his security blanket for the quarterback and especially on third down get him the ball able to tackle the ball carrier there that's an excellent effort here by this defense staying in their run fits they holding their own at the line and making the tackle the offense just couldn't get enough of a push to get anything going there getting set here's second down and the back now goes in motion scanning the field it's brosmer makes a quick grab over to Juke gets three now and heads out of bounds after a solid gain more than enough to pick up a first down yeah you know this defense has got to be frustrated after giving up multiple conversions now on first downs there's another one but for the offense and they're just playing very efficiently right now the Golden Gophers pick up yard to move the sticks from the shotgun now here's a hand off inside you know in that era that we live in right now everybody spread the field round try to create space try to create one-on-one matchups and the defense has countered over the years by trying to play out wide but here's a great example the defense has the ability to play wide but still be solid at the line of scrimmage and not give up big run plays second down after that run on the previous play nowhere to go here and the ball is knocked loose the defense has picked up the football going the other way oh look at the big fella trying to get all the way home can he make it I think that's on the quarterback and the offensive line they were breathing down this quarterback's neck before he could even recognize that they were there and they were able to knock it loose and the tels offense is back out on the field they were able to punch it in the end zone last time looking to do the same thing here to see if the defense can make adjustments looking to the end zone and it's caught touchdown tars that is great job here by this offense taking advantage of a big opportunity provided to them by their own defense after that turnover and why wait they get aggressive make the throw and it pays off for a touchdown so they'll try to add to the lead now with the p [Applause] the P puts him up three kickoff team on the field getting set now he's going to return it from near the goal line moving right through the cont and the returner steps out at the 16 yd line and the Minnesota offense takes the field the last possession ended in a fumble and that set up a touchdown so they got to bounce back from that right away it's a nice gain will move the football up to the 27 tackle made but a strong armed throw by the senior quarterback great execution here by this offense against Zone coverage with a curl route hit that last step in your drop you see where you want to go with it put it right on his shoulder for a first down first down play call how aggressive will it be pre snap motion from the receiver first down we going to throw the football with the catch it's Williams tackles made but not before he makes the 43 yd line this drive is going now the defense spreads all over the field playing Zone trying to make this quarterback make a mistake by throwing it into coverage but he finds this soft spot on the curl and picks up a first down the drive stays alive with that first down completion some pre- snap movement Back In Motion grab down the middle it's Spencer down crosses Midfield to the 46 you know this is what makes this receiver so dangerous if you play him in man he can run by you for a big play you decide to sit back in zone and he's got the savan instincts to be able to find that soft spot in the zone make a catch and be dangerous after the catch as well they'll keep it on the ground running back has the hand off they tackle him but the gain moves the ball to 36 wa how about that play Chris that thing just opened up the back shot through there with great acceleration what a pick up there on first down and the golden go will line up on First and 10 it's a quarterback keeper the gain is two yard so it's second and eight not exactly the outcome this offense was hoping for here on the option give credit they didn't lose anything so it wasn't a negative play but this kind of play got to be able to hit big and get down the sidelines for big yards second down after that run on the previous play The Backs got it that's a nice tackle there by the senior sixth play of the drive coming up dropping back it's brosmer using his legs on the scramble they pick up the first down tackled at the 25 this is why I love the quarterbacks that can make things happen here you have an opportunity to try to create nothing's there play breaks down instead of just throwing it away he sits back sees nothing down field decides to be able to pick up the first down by himself impressive run to pick up the first keep this drive moving he's going to be brought down by that ferocious pass rush nice sack I mean that's another sack Chris I mean we just getting started here first half and you're already talking about giving up three sacks got to think about changing things up schematically help that offensive line and help that poor quarterback before he gets Ked pass protection a serious issue another sack makes it second and [Applause] long they're going to run it defense stops him but that's a solid gain [Applause] third down here time for perhaps one more play before the two-minute warning so we've reached the two-minute warning as this offense tries to take the lead here before half time ninth play of the drive coming up this is a tough third and long dropping back he going to throw for the first down makes the it's Spencer now the timeout is called by the defense they've got some things to work out here Chris it just feels like the offense is almost teasing the defense with this play as an offensive coordinator quarterback you're often looking for that soft spot in the zone and here they do a nice job of finding that hole for a nice game kick right down the middle can't hit it any better than that the game is now tied Chris it's a nice kick here tol that drive with at least three points up on the [Music] board so after the field goal the kicker out there again to boot it [Applause] away he'll return it from inside the five and he stopped at the 19 good job by the coverage team and the North Carolina off is back out there on the field they punched it in the last possession can they do it again or will this defense make some adjustments to get a stop here's a wide open receiver complete mat will pick up a first down they'll spot it at the 38 man I love the route here by the receiver really sold going vertical down field ends up coming back to the football to pick up big yards and the Tar Heels looking to crank up the tempo a bit [Applause] on First and 10 they'll look to throw it that's caught it's Jones he stop him at the 49 but that'll be a first down they bring him down but the veteran quarterback shows off that trademark arm strength the key on a drag route is to put the ball out in front of the wide receiver to give him a chance to do what he just did pick up some B yard after the catch offense in hurry up mode on First and 10 looking to throw caught on the outside it's Jones and he heads out of bounds after gaining a few yards Chris it's so much fun to watch the athleticism at the wide receiver position nowadays the ability to make plays on the outside is extraordinary and they bring a certain toughness to to catch pass caugh second down now looking to throw yet again fires it makes the catch down field that's a big game before he goes out of bounds it'll move the sticks more than enough for a first down that's what makes this tight end so dangerous you can Flex him out into that slot position he shows you his versatility he can be an inline guy that can block but here he shows you what he can do with his hands and the tarhill starting a new series here on First and 10 to the Johnson the pocket break nowhere to go that ball knocked loose now the defense has got it going the other way breaks clear over the right side can they chase him down touchdown Minnesota on the scoop and score that is any Defender dream comes up with a fumble takes it back to the house I can't believe the speed that this guy has be able to score I thought maybe pick it up maybe go a few yards but instead all the way to the end zone and they'll set up for the p8 P makes it a seveno lead [Applause] so the offense getting some momentum before halfe with the touchdown now they kick off and hopes the defense can get a quick stop he's going to bring it out of the end Z from a couple yard deep be tackled at the 17 J by the coverage team Here Comes North Carolina offense back out on of the field backed up this close to the Rend Zone in the final minute let's see if they just decide to football and look toward the second half timeout is called to talk strategy late in this close game with halim approaching the game moves the ball past the 40 sets up another first and 10 quarterback drops back from the shotgun looking for a receiver oh nice play by the defender got a hand in there to break up the pass it is really tough on a quarterback when he thinks he's got a completion an open Man Down field the ball's just about to get to his receiver where the defensive back steps in front of it and knocks away nice job so second down after the incompletion back to pass it's Johnson quick throw catch made on the outout gets out of bounds as a short gain on the play it's a great catch near the sideline and does a good job of getting that foot down to SEC the catch offense trying to move into scoring position they third and short here from the 50 looking to pick up the first down through the air SS a quick throw and he'll head out of bounds but not before picking up enough for a first down well when you play zone defense on third down and you don't get pressure from your defensive line you're going to give a quarterback a lot of time to be able to find an open receiver and eventually get the first down not surprised at all that they're able to convert on First and 10 here thr the ball caught quickly they bring down the receiver but that's a nice gain on that play love the timing here between the quarterback and his receiver pick up somei yards I continue to be impressed with just the the chemistry between these two one more play before they head to the locker room timeout is called to talk strategy time for just one or two plays here before so on second down they TR out the field go un try to get three and he makes it wow from 55 y Out Boy this guy had plenty of leg here too you remember the days when a kick from 50 plus was a major accomplishment now these guys knock these out like they're almost automatic so here's the kickoff now offense settling for three tacking on a little bit of momentum before the halftime break return begins inside the 10 the coverage brings him down to the final play of this first half M's going to WRA up the first half here let kick it down to Kevin Connor with our half update guys it is hard to beat Minneapolis when that town is buzzing as it is today two quarters of both sides feeling each other out and it's likely to come down to which offense can find a way to generate some big plays adjustments will be a part of it maybe it's time these typically conserv play callers open up the Playbook nothing crazy but a calculated risk here and there to try to gain an edge in what's been a stalemate either way it's time to find out back to the best in the for the start of this third quarter and he'll bring it out from inside the 10 he's tackled at the 21 that's where the drive will start Minnesota offense takes the field important possession here at begin the third quarter as they continue momentum from the first half and build on this lead they'll bring him down after just a short pick up defense do really nice job here being able to contain that run game held him just to two yards Chris to me this changes the Playbook a little bit now for the offense the guy calling the plays at second that's a deal now he's got probably thinking about going through the instead of staying on the ground looking the pass it's brosmer makes a quick catch tackle but not before a solid gain on that pass one thing I love about this back is how he gets involved in the passing game nice catch here so ball at the 30 this is a manageable third down play for the offense can he get there on the ground they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one well these are the kind of plays you have to make to be able to win the game in the second half this back had a great first half and has gotten plenty of touches so you've got to make sure this half is different than how things have gone so far the Golden Gophers will send their pun team onto the field and he'll kick it away half for the second time and The Return Man decides to Signal fair Catch and the tar Hills offense is back out on the field they got points on the board last time thanks to a long field goal and from the shotgun an inside hand off it's a two yd gain second and eight coming up hey it's a great job of this defense coning the running game if I'm calling the play I'm Not aband the running game just yet I think it's important to have some sense of balance so throwing and running is essential sck with second down after that run on the previous play using the ground game here tailback has the hand off avoid a loss but just barely gets back to the line of scrimmage the defensive line does their job eating up those double teams freeing up the backers to make the play so it's third and long from the 29 the defense play carbage or Blitz dropping back going to throw for the first down fires it to the wide out finds the man down field that's a big gain to the right T quickly but a big chunk play for this offense through the air the defense is spread all over the field creating some one-on-one matchups and a quarterback makes them pay for it and the tar Hills will hustle to the line to run the hurry up offense quarterback still with the football picks up three yard so second and seven well anytime you use your quarterback as a runner the goal is obviously to hit some big plays you got to be careful of letting your quarterback take too many big hits not only can he get tired he can also start to Fumble the football second down after that previous play out of the shotgun he hands it off he's brought down but that strong arm turned him the first down sometimes I almost get mesmerized watching these Runners who have great vision you know the eyes that carry their feet to the open space making people Miss I just love watching those guys do work and the Tar Heels T out another first down running game is working they'll stick with it on first down they'll bring him down but the spin cycle put on that Defender my goodness that offensive line that's just getting a hat on a hat opening just enough room for the back to be able to get through there for a big game and the tar Hills begin a new series here first and [Applause] 10 now they'll switch it up looking to throw the ball here touchdown tars they go in front here in the second half this guy has a knack for the do that's two touchdowns for this guy today and I don't know if he's done yet with that completion right there this quarterback now has gone over 300 yard in this game what a day and they get set now to try the p p puts him up three kickoff team is on the field to boot this one away they return it from inside the 10 yd line they stop him at the 23 that's solid coverage and the Minnesota offense takes the field they were held to a Qui three and out last time have put together a positive drive here here comes a handoff it'll be smarter right at the line for no game that back just had nowhere to go got to give credit to the defense and the Run fits on that play second down play coming up for this offense they'll run it out of the shotgun you seor able to make the stop after a short game the offense now facing a third and long from the 26 got to avoid a mistake here to throw it's brosmer tight for a bring down the drive has now reached the 35 well this is called settling down in his own defense just kind of finding that soft spot so not only does this tight end show that he's got great athletic ability and great size here he shows you that he understands coverage by sitting down in that hole giving the quarterback a nice Target able to pick up that first down and there's the hand off moves the ball across the 40 it's a really good solid run I know it's not the flashiest big play but it's important for your offense to be able to get yards like that on early Downs you stay ahead of the chains and it opens up the playbook for the second and third down coming up offense getting set up here's second [Applause] down looking for some space it's Taylor and he's down but he does have enough with the first down I know this defense worked very hard at halim to come up with answers on how to try to slow down this running back after the big first half and he's already at it again big guys up front lined up it's first down out of the shotgun he'll hand it off they pick up four so second down and Six coming up listen you don't big plays to be successful it's a nice solid gain here keeps you on schedule and you get ready for that next play offense getting set it's second down from the shotgun drops back pulls it in it'ss tackled but only after picking up a fresh set of downs that's a nice pick up there they find some space in the zone and up the first down yeah really nice call here Chris to be able to pick up this first down on this drag route the quarterback does a nice job of being patient waiting for that window to open up in that zone and he put it right on the money for the receiver to have a chance to not just catch it but eventually get the first quick spin on theun able to fight for a decent gain here in that running play nice solid run here by this back did a nice job of just kind of finding that lane pick up some positive yards there on First and 10 second down after that run on the previous play looking to pass it's brosmer and he can't escape it's a sack for the defense man it has been a rough night for this poor offensive line and it's only getting worse that's five sacks they've now given up so far in this game alone ninth play of the drive coming up this is a tough thirdd and long quarterback drops back probing the secondary with the catch it's Spencer well exec he finds and gets the first down and the golden goph first come to the line to start a fresh set of downs and the ball is handed off out of the shotgun tackled behind the line it's a loss of two the long drive continues the offense pushing the ball down the field they'll go with the ground game here running back takes the hand off they bring him down but that's a solid gain on the play you know all week the defensive coordinator told us about the quarterback he told us about the receivers and how they're going to throw the football but man they better get locked on stopping this run game because that was a big time game The Golden Gophers line up with a first and goal that's a nice tackle there by the [Applause] senior it's a second in goal play for the offense motion by the back will make the defense adjust looking to the end zone and he'll get there touchdown Golden Gophers so they reach the endzone after a marathon March how about the execution in that drive well I know a lot of times people get excited for the big plays they're fun to watch but what's impressive to me is an offense that can put together a long drive and then finally it off with a touchdown that way you don't have to always rely on the big plays that's a great drive now the try here for the extra point extra point makes the lead four now the kickoff team is out on the [Applause] field and he'll Le the kickoff right there start the 25 the North Carolina off is back out there on the field they punch it into the end zone the last time let's see if this defense has made some adjustments to stop him this time CCH is made down the middle they bring him down but an explosive play by this offense big game man with that completion right there this quarterback now has gone over 300 yard in this game what a day and the tar Hills will hustle to the line here to run the hurry [Applause] up to the air it's Johnson he finds the running back in the flat he's tackled for a loss after the catch the defense all over that one this is not how you draw it up as an offensive coordinator you got a first down play and you go backwards now you behind the sticks and that play does never seem to have much of a chance at all what's the play call here on second down for this [Applause] offense quarterback will throw enough the Run pass option he's brought down quickly as gain gets them a few yard closer to the marker just a good job here by the quarterback got the ball out to Hiser up yard they St ah of the third down coming up after that running [Applause] play back to throw again it's an out route the catch made and a big game before goes out of bounds the offense keeps churning gets a fresh set of downs well that's a nice completion to the sideline with great timing the connection between the receiver and the quarterback was on full display to be able to get that first down and the tars pick up enough to get a first down there here's the snap looking to throw here receiver looks it in it's complete tackle is made just a after the completion comp there second down coming up grab behind the line it's Jones and he will be stuffed for no game I love the call with the wide receiver screen where's he going to go the blockers do not do their job and open up any running LAN not going to be easy here backed up a long way to go for a first down on third down he drops to throw pressure is coming sa in the play could not escape the pass rush a really good job by this defense the quarterback looked to be trying to work through his progressions to find his open receiver but before he knew it he's on his back and the Tar Heels will send the punt team onto the Field's to kick it away helping his team with field position oh it landed at the seven and bounced into the end zone for a Touchback and the Minnesota offense takes the field can they keep it going the run and pass beautifully in the last touchdown Drive finds room at the 30 tackle made after a solid game will spot the ball at the 34 another nice gain by this back he has had a beautiful day today running the football just kind of in that zone and a big reason why they have a nice lead today first down play call coming up how aggressive will it be they'll try to pick up the yardage on the ground they got him down out near the 40 it's a good solid game five or six yard to see that from the running game second down after that run on the previous play he hands it off from the gun solid gain moves the ball to a 43 I feel like they called knowing chances are they're not going to hit a home run but look at this put themselves in a perfect third down situations much more manageable now we'll see if they can convert so now it's third and short from the 43 can they keep the drive going or perhaps face a tough fourth down decision they'll try to run for the first down goes backwards losing three yard there my gosh this offensive Line's got to do a better job of blocking the defense was Zero in on the ball carrier and absolutely nowhere to go for the offense and the golden go will line up to it away this one will be fair caught and here comes the Earth Carana offense back out onto the field last possession they were forced to kick it away and they finally get things going this time hand off here from the shotgun they bring him down right at the 20 this exactly what you want to see as a play caller you get positive yards to be able to kind of keep you on schedle as a play caller that's all you can ask for good job up front and a nice run offense comes up to the line he might have a chance for a couple more plays before the quarter expires tailb back with another carry and he's wrapped up short of the marker there as the time runs down here in the third quarter and it's Minnesota in front here sitting in pretty good position as we wrap up the third quarter let's check out the game ST so far we're set now for the fourth who going to make the crucial plays to take home this W try to pick up the third down yardage on the ground and the offense is on the Move now yeah I love how the back didn't really dance around trying to make a big play he knew was third down in inches lower the shoulder get the first down and the tar Hills have first and 10 [Applause] here dropping back it's Johnson receiver makes the catch they bring him down after a short gain there that makes it Medi and the wi out goes in motion quick pass here comes a Jet Sweep and he's tackled right at the 40 yd line man that Jet Sweep action puts so much pressure on it def so locked in on their ball attacking you downhill but when offenses sprinkle this kind of offense in it stretches this defense out wide they can create some verticals for Bigs the offense now looking at a third and short their own 40 trying to keep this drive going and the tar Hills are moving quickly down the field well good push up front here in this back I tell you he's got some outstanding Vision to be able to find those creases to be able to get POS yard and here he gets the first down and the Tar Heels looking to keep this drive rolling offense moving receivers around now before the snap first down looking to throw the ball finds an open Target on the left side there a l after the completion that's a good play by the defense they love going to this guy in the slot don't they what a mismatch inside in another one this guy's automatic here's the second down play on the it's Hampton they'll stop him behind the line for L of one I don't think the offensive line gave the back much of a chance at all now give credit to the defense there's almost like they anticipating a run and got up close to the line of scrimmage in a hurry the offense two for two on third down to this drive but this will be tough It's third and long scanning the field it's Johnson and he's going to float this one to the right side that's incomplete they weren't afraid to let it fly but it brings up a fourth down well that's not what you want to see as an offense when you're trailing late in a football game and in completion on third down and long it's a bit of a risk but with that clock looking the way it looks right I think he got to go for it here and hope to convert on Fourth and long and on fourth down the punter sends it away and the returner elects to fair catch it no return the Minnesota offense takes the field forced to punt last time trying to add points build the lead right here trying to flex the ground game here running back takes the hand off brought down but broke the tackle to produce a solid gain there hey you got to do what you got to do you got to rely on that off line running game here to be able to secure a victory good call and just keep working that clock important second down play coming [Applause] up same tail back another carry that's a solid gain moves the ball to the 29 so a very makeable third down for the offense with a 29 looking to pick up the first down through the air he's got an open Man Down field and it's caught a big Play Moves the ball across Midfield the opponent's 43 a lot of times college quarterbacks they more comfortable working to the side here's an example of a quarterback with a full field read and he hits a big play in the middle big chunk play this offense operating at Peak [Applause] efficiency from the shotgun it's a handoff they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one this running back's had a big night kind of night you dream about but the defense finally steps up and gets to him behind the line of scrimmage offense getting set second down play [Applause] here dropping back it's brosmer they'll try a pass here makes the catch they bring him down to the 27 this offense really threatening now and that completion KK puts him over 300 yd passing today yeah anytime a quarterback has a day like this really it all has to come together with the offensive line play the receivers running these great routs and he's just in syn he's kind of in that zone right now he'll be the first one to tell you how much his teammates have helped him out today off the play fake on first down quick throw to his receiver beautiful catch right near the sideline gets the foot down I just continue to be in awe of this offense even with the lead these guys are going to play for 60 minutes they do not let up here they are typically you want to run the football here to work the clock but these guys stick to the game plan and keep throwing the football trying to get more yards looking to throw it on first down caught over the middle it's Glen tack after the catch but the ball moves to the four yd line here comes a crucial second down play every yard tough to find down here in the red zone out of the shotgun he hands it off tackled behind the line it's a loss of two it is tough to run the football inside this 5yd line give all the credit to that defensive line eating up those linemen allowing the rest of the defense toly to the football for that short loss offense facing a third down now they can still get a first down without scoring quarterback in the shotgun here on third down makes the grab in the end zone touchdown Minnesota well that's a thing of beauty right there good job all around offensive line gave the quarterback enough time quarterback puts it right on the money and with this receiver running a route like this makes it pretty simple all he had to do was get his head turned around catch that football he's already in the end zone for the touchdown they try to add the lead now the extra point is up and good thead 11 in the fin [Applause] quarter kickoff team is on the field let's see if they give the returner this one back return starts from inside the five and he stopped at the to makeen that's good coverage there and theills off back out on the field he put together a long drive last time but stalled and came up empty can they reach the end zone this time but they can't make the connection balls incomplete now it's second down here it's a draw play that's a solid game moves the ball to the 29 boy trolls and screens are great way to counter an effective pass rush allow those defensive ends to get up field handed off at the last second so a very makeable third down for the offense with a 29 they flip it to him on the Jet Sweep I I really like the idea on third down I can kind of see the thought process there make an unconventional call on third down sometimes that can work out but the defense was just prepped and ready for it this time and the tar Hills will bring their one team onto the field on the kick now for the fifth time today returner BL down by that coverage team and the Minnesota offense takes the field the last position they really had the passing game quicking move right down the field for a touchdown a short completion of the tight end they make the T but that pass creates a solid game Chris it's another nice pick up through the air I I thought they might be really just about to run the football here with the lead but instead they're electing to throw the football different routes quarterbacks in Rhythm really it's almost an extension of their passing looking down field it's brosmer receiver makes the grab down but not territory at the 49 I mean Chris look at this guy you talk about having a great day throwing the football and leading his team to a nice comfortable lead late in the game and it continues the coach is showing confidence of what he can do here's a first and 10 play takes the hand off it's Taylor they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one well these obvious running situations are very tough when you're working lead late in the game because you know the defense is going to stack the line of scrimmage make it as difficult as possible for you to run the football so nice job there by the defense they're trying to punch that ball out do anything they can at all to get the ball back it's an RP the quarterback gets it out quickly they make the stop but not before a solid gain that time Chris another accurate throw by this quarterback and this guy has just been on fire all game long over 200 yard passing but more importantly making great decisions for this offense and put them in a position to win this game receiver in motion now hand off from the shotgun it's good for a three yd gain so second and seven I like the Run play here and offensively at this point in the game you want to remain in that attack mode first while also staying in bounds and working that clock second down after that run on the previous Play here's the snap quarterback looking to throw grab down the middle it's Spencer he's tackled quickly but the yardage is good enough for the first down this defense cannot find any way to slow this guy down he's been making plays like this all game long over 100 yard receiving on the day now the Golden Gophers lining up here on First and 10 quarterback keeps the footballac is made after a four yd game so second and six well if you're going to run the read option you're going to have to keep your eye on that defensive end if he collapses down inside to the running back and you pull it and take it yourself as a quarterback to the outside he stays outside you're going to go ahead and leave it in the running back's belly in this case he pulled it and got some good yards himself that's going to be incomplete a lot of contact no flag brings up third down you get a tight end like this and you know he's used to dishing out the punishment but here he's the one that has to absorb the contact and as a result he's unable to hold on to the football offense thinking touchdown not field goal facing a third and long from the 20 yd line they'll run it out of the shotgun fighting for yardage but the defense stops him just short of that first down marker how about that Chris they run the football here on third down almost pick up the first down what it does though is gives them a much better chance if they decide to go for this of picking up that first down out comes the field goal unit he was on target with his first try see if he can keep it going from 34 yd away knocks that one right the middle and they add to their lead I was watching this guy in pregame he has got a strong leg surprised here he's able to put three points up here for the [Music] off following the field goal the kick team is out there now so no return here he takes in the end zone and they'll begin the drive at the 25 the North Carolina offense is back out there on the field they're coming off a quick three and out so looking to put something together on this drive with a little more urgency and he just throws the ball away there nobody open excellent coverage Bo the quarterback did about everything he could toit play to develop and there was just nobody open it's great coverage down field and instead of taking a sack or potentially throwing the pick he just gets rid of it so after the incomp it's second down it's a draw to the back and the Run moves the ball up to the 33 the draw is a good way to keep the defensive line and check and use their aggressiveness against them it can be real effective even in passing situations if you mix it [Music] incorrectly and theels come up to the line to crank the tempo up [Applause] here to throw it's Johnson makes the throw across the middle of the field oh that one's picked off they get him down after a return but the takeway sets up the offense at the 4 boy would this quarterback love to have this one back they're trying to work themselves back into this game here in the second half and the defense comes up with a big turnover that could be the nail in the coffin and the Minnesota offense takes the field last possession produced the field goal no doubt they're thinking touchdown this time they'll work the clock here with the running game man just complimentary football really in a nutshell they get this football back thanks to their own defense creating that turnover working with the lead like this really it's all bit over now the offense just thinking about running the football and working that clock second down play coming [Applause] up keep it on the ground there's the handoff that run produces a decent gain I think this defense keeps thinking about them the football and by doing that they're opening up running Lanes good positive yards there by the running back third down here time for perhaps one more play before the two-minute warning here's that defense shifting again this is a big third down play coming up if they can get the stop you have to believe we' see a timeout the shot running play call only gets a couple of yards there it'll bring up fourth down and now it's the defense that calls timeout here trying to get organized and preserve as much clock as possible so now on comes the field goal unit field goal try no good he missed it lead remains at 14 after the NS oh off the upright there boy he hit it clean it was end over in I thought had a real chance and the ball just kind of kept moving on him and then d right off the upright and here comes the throw and offense back out onto the field the last possession ended in an interception let's see if they continue to trust this quarterback in the passing game it's a quick grab they bring him down but he was fast enough that first down yardage this is turning into a monster day for this quarterback Kirk is passing yards now up over 350 yeah it seems like this defense has tried everything they're blitzing they're sitting back in zone they're trying to double coverage certain receivers everything that they've tried is unfortunately for them not working because of how well this quarterback is seeing it and throwing today back to pass it's Johnson quick throw to the left side it's complete what a grab near the sideline heads out of bounds after a solid gain more than enough to pick up a first down well this offense has a long way to be able to get back and potentially win this game but they're doing the right things managing the clock picking up good yards and getting out of bounds completion good for first down yardage for this offense physical defending that one Falls incomplete brings up second Down Chris I thought he had his hands on that football I thought he was going to come down with it but give the defense all the credit with a big hit to knock that ball loose getting set here's second down looking to throw again running out of time in the poet couldn't find anybody open just to throw it away they come to the line a long way to go for the first down but needing this crucial conversion right now and he'll drop back here on third down the hands it's Jones the defense WPS him up quickly got about five yard on the comp but now it's fourth down I really like what this defensive coordinator is doing right now he's got a nice lead just sit back the most thing is tackling this offense in bounds so that clock will keep ticking fourth down he's throwing for it let's a fly to the wide out caugh near the go line they make the tackle but he easily gets first down yardage and the drive keeps going offense stops the clock with their second timeout to talk strategy looking down field it's Johnson oh a sack the senior on this defense making a big play the offense will wisely spend a timeout after the play clock Management's going to be very important here in the final minutes off the L it's second and goal from the 11 he drops back in the gun the pass rush has got him again back to back sacks that takes the wind right this offense is trying to find a way to get back into this game and another pressure and a sack against their quarterback the clock is still running I have to hurry up here but it's a crucial third down come up and quickly spike it stopping the clock [Music] field goal here doesn't help CA they're going to go for the touchdown here on fourth down and the quarterback looking to make a play through the air launching one to the end zone the ball is picked off follows the pick with a nice return before finally being brought down boy the offense just could not AFF to throw this interception it's already a two possession game by throwing this pick now you wonder how many will you [Music] get here's the first play of the drive now they're backed up at their own 14 offense will keep it on the ground here
